Paul Standell of The Muscle Mentors U.K. joined us this week and we're talking training particularly training for hypertrophy. Welcome to The Muscle Mentors Podcast! This week Cal and Ross are joined by Joe Jeffery and Christian Chapman of the Physique Collective, and Tom Hames of Evolution Coaching to talk about diuretic use within the world of bodybuilding & physique competitions. Following tragic recent events within the industry, the guys thought it would be a great idea to spend some time discussing diuretic application in physique sport, the risks, the reasons for deployment, and the mechanisms in play. Also discussed are some alternative methods to peaking, and why perhaps this could be the superior protocol when it comes to driving maximum response whilst maintaining the integrity of health markers. The boys didn't go too heavily into the specifics here as that would be getting beyond the scope of the conversation, but some knowledge bombs to be taken nevertheless. Welcome to The Muscle Mentors Podcast! In this episode, Luke, Paul & James discuss the age-old concept of *Range Of Motion* and how it relates to our own training and work as coaches. Want to learn more from us? Make sure to book onto our October 2021 Level 1 Practical Camp: https://www.themusclementors.co.uk/practical-camp-booking Specifically, the guys look at the debate between the approach of always performing exercises with a *Full Range Of Motion*, versus the often misunderstood approach of using *Active Range of Motion*. This episode will help you understand how much nuance there is to the term: *Range of Motion*, and more importantly, how you can start looking at and performing exercises to help ensure you maximise your "lifting longevity", so to speak. Undoubtedly, some feathers will probably be ruffled by this episode (particularly if you're a Full R.O.M advocate). Hopefully, if that's you, you'll still enjoy the episode and take some useful bits away from it. If you have any thoughts of your own, please share them with us below. Welcome to The Muscle Mentors Podcast! In this episode, Luke, Paul & Ross discuss what it means to train 'to failure', the many different (and often conflicting) definitions of the concept, and what this all means for our training and coaching. Want to learn more from us? Make sure to book onto our October 2021 Level 1 Practical Camp: https://www.themusclementors.co.uk/practical-camp-booking The concept of training to failure is always a hot topic in the industry, and rightfully so! There are SO many different versions of it when we get into the nitty-gritty of day-to-day training. This conversation will serve to open your eyes to some of these versions of failure, and how you can use them within your own training and coaching practices. We also get into the weeds a little with respect to how the various conflicting definitions of failure can and do dramatically affect research being done in the area of hypertrophy. Today I am excited to be joined by James Sutton, Lead Educator in Exercise Mechanics at The Muscle Mentors, industry leaders in physique coaching and education. James is a trainer of trainers, a mentor for many PT's in the industry with an incredible amount of time & experience under his belt. In fact, James worked alongside Calum Raistrick at M10 in Nottingham, where James actually mentored Calum in Cal's early years as a coach, which speaks volumes for James knowledge and experience, including his role as lead educator and head of coaching at M10 before joining the Muscle Mentors. James epitomises the true physique & exercise professional, as one of the very few coaches in the UK who has obtained Mastery level with the Resistance Training Specialist created by Tom Purvis. I wanted to do something a little different for todays podcast with James. He's mostly invited onto podcasts to talk about exercise mechanics nowadays, which we'll definitely touch on, however James has so much experience and insight across the board which I was very keen to tap into during our discussion. So grab a coffee and enjoy what is sure to be an insightful episode. Thanks, please comment, like and subscribe! Emilia Thompson PhD returns for a 3rd time to The Muscle Mentors Podcast! Want to learn more from us and access the extended version of this interview? Head over to The Muscle Mentors Education Portal and join our epic community of coaches there: www.themusclementors.co.uk/ We're not talking about our favourite foods this time, however. This was an incredibly valuable conversation centred around Emilia's new ventures in the form of studying to become a therapist. We discussed different types of psychotherapy, the process of referring clients out, and most importantly, Emilia's top tools and tactics for safely implementing these areas within her coaching practice. This is often the hardest part to grasp, as, like many other areas, it is far too easy to start straying too far from our wheelhouse as coaches when we start looking into human behavioural science. Thank you, Emilia, for coming back onto the platform. As per usual, it was a great pleasure to chat with you and bear witness to the ton of value you brought to the podcast. Today I have the pleasure of being joined by Calum Raistrick who is an Online Coach, Educator, and Co-Founder of The Muscle Mentors. We discuss setting yourself up for a successful contest prep as a female athlete from a health perspective, and cover the following: - What blood tests would it be useful to consider getting done prior to a contest prep and why? - If someone had blood test results that came back outside of the normal range, would you prefer to hold off on prep until these markers were back within a normal range? - How long would you wait until re testing after attempts to correct any results that were out of range? - Is it fairly common for creatinine levels to be elevated in resistance trained individuals and if so why? - If a female is on hormonal birth control, is it still worth looking into hormone levels or not? & why? - Is there any benefit to doing IV over finger prick? - We know that competitors are not in an optimal position from a health perspective post show. How long would you wait until getting any bloods done with clients in this scenario? - what other health markers/measurements would you consider tracking prior to starting a contest prep with an individual? - and why? - what would you say are your top 5 habits you would recommend for an individual to help optimise their health? - Are there any supplements on a general level that people might consider which are commonly beneficial from a health perspective? If you have any further or more specific questions on this topic please don't hesitate to drop myself or Cal a direct message on Instagram or leave a comment down below, and I can always go through things in more detail. If you do enjoy the content on the female fitness podcast it would mean the world if you could like and subscribe, and share that you're listening on your Instagram story.☺️ As always, thank you so much for listening. Want to learn more from us? In addition to the many random tangents, the trio discussed the likes of strength and resistance profiles (and how these may differ vastly depending on various factors), key set-up considerations, the importance of controlling rep speed, and how we can make the most of our roles as exercise professionals by embracing the ability to explore things. A special thanks goes out to Paul for coming on the podcast. Paul is an asset to the fitness industry, truly epitomising what it means to be an exercise professional. Today we are joined by Michael Goulden, Owner and Lead Educator at Integra, a London-based private studio delivering personal training & education. His client roster includes creative professionals, recreational and professional athletes, as well as fellow exercise professionals who want to take their own training to the next level. Alongside his client work, Michael teaches courses in biomechanics and personal training for Integra and is a member of the teaching staff for the Resistance Training Specialist programs. He regularly consults and lectures for companies such as Cybex and some of the top personal training companies in Europe, such as M10 and the Muscle Mentors. Michael is by no means a flashy individual and very much lets his knowledge, experience and work do the talking. I believe this is part of the reason why he so well respected by many of the top in-person and online coaches in the industry. This was an awesome discussion covering some great topics, such as the challenges he faced with introducing The RTS methodology to the UK fitness scene, along with what we can do as coaches to raise the bar of coaching standards & delivery. In todays episode of the podcast I chatted with Luke Hoffman, physique coach, educator and co founder/director of education at The Muscle Mentors. The topic of todays discussion is hypertrophy at home and how to best make gains. How much does access to limited equipment really hold us back? Should we be training to failure? Episode #105 - Deconstructing the Deadlift***If you know Luke, which you all will, you'll be aware he's a pretty smart guy. Last year I learned a tonne of really cool stuff from him which really changed my approach and thinking towards training.***I recently listen to one of Luke's own podcasts with Skinny Gaz and last weeks guest James Sutton. It was an amazing episode but left me with a load of questions I wanted to ask Luke about regarding deadlifting and hip mechanics. So I did. ***If you like to get down and dirty with functional anatomy, exercise mechanics and strength profiles, this is the episode for you. Now available on iTunes & Spotify “The Chris Knott Podcast"
The Team are joined by Luke Hoffman of The Muscle Mentors. Luke and the gang are physique coaches who are often seen advocating training methods and lifestyle suggestions that may seem a little unorthodox to many, particularly those who advocate more traditional "lift weights and eat well" approach. We thought it would be interesting to chat to Luke to delve deeper into the reasons behind his interest in things like sleep optimisation, blood pressure and heart rate variability monitoring etc. We also discuss where these factors fit in the hierarchy of importance when it comes to training, and their applicability to day to day people vs competitive bodybuilders (natural/assisted). We also clarify the correct pronunciation of GIF, and argue about cats. If you are interested in chatting more to Luke about this you can find him at @luke_themusclementors . You may also notice that this episode may sound slightly less audiotastic than usual. This is because Joe Brumby, our Sound Engineer, has had a baby this week, and due to Fitness Unfiltered's good nature, we have decided to give him some paternity leave. This episode is therefore dedicated to Hallie Rose Brumby, particularly 51-53 minutes where Luke went to get his charger and we discussed our laptop woes. We hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do please give us a review and rating and subscribe to the podcast, tell all your friends and tag us in your social media posts! As always your Fitness Unfiltered Team is: @DrMikeThe2nd @ace_dan_osman @esgfitness
