Send us a Text Message.Have you ever witnessed the unfolding of a multicultural family's narrative through the lens of empathy and education? Diana Oestreich joins us to detail her remarkable journey from a predominantly white upbringing to championing diversity and equity, particularly in our education systems. As we navigate the nuances of her family life in Northern Minnesota, Diana shares the emotional and resilient stories of raising her two sons—one of whom was adopted from Ethiopia—and the challenges they face, including confronting racism in educational settings. This heartfelt exchange underscores the essential role of love, advocacy, and acknowledgment in crafting a supportive environment for all children. When racism taints the innocence of education, what is the role of a parent, an educator, or a community member? We grapple with this question as Diana recounts painful instances where her younger son faced discrimination, and how the family rallied to protect and affirm his worth. Our dialogue brings to light the power of speaking up against injustice—how a simple act of intervention can be a beacon for change and support. Parents and educators alike are called upon to be fierce advocates for our children, creating respectful, safe spaces that celebrate diversity rather than merely tolerating it.Wrapping up our conversation, we plunge into the transformative potential of personal stories to bridge divides and promote social justice. Diana's transformation from a soldier into a peacemaker echoes throughout our discussion, inspiring us to consider how we can all contribute to building a more inclusive and just society. We also touch upon the Waging Peace Project, an initiative close to my heart that fosters local acts of courage to spread joy and justice. As we close, we leave you with a reminder of the imperative to engage in conversations around race and identity in every household and how this paves the way for our children to thrive in a world that yearns for unity. There's a personal thread throughout this conversation, as I share how my own path in dance has informed my perspective on the arts and the power of representation. With a twirl and a leap, we then shift the focus to educators and how literature like Kristie Dempsey's enchanting tale can be woven into a curriculum that fosters young dreamers. Growing up, I never had a teacher who looked like me, which left a lasting impression on my educational journey. On today's show, join us as my former colleague and respected educator Sean Mayberry walks us through his story of aspiration and dedication, from St. Paul to Duluth to Fridley Public School, where he now serves as the Dean of Students for 5th grade. His experiences, extending from his military service to his passion for youth sports, provide an unparalleled perspective on the influence one can have on the lives, particularly of African American students, through education.Imagine a classroom where every student sees a reflection of themselves in the history and culture being taught. That's the reality Sean and I strive for as we discuss the need for cultural awareness in education. We share our insights on why it's crucial for students to express their culture freely and how educators can become co-learners in this journey. This episode is peppered with practical advice for fellow teachers on creating inclusive environments and why it's essential to foster these connections not just during cultural heritage months but throughout the entire school year. The art of teaching extends far beyond the textbooks and lesson plans; it's about building bridges of grace and understanding with our students. Sean and I reflect on the multifaceted roles educators play—from mentors to confidants—and how these relationships can transform lives. We address the importance of nurturing the school-home connection and delve into the power of empathy and restorative practices in education. Oh hey friend! Yeah... you read that title right. I have an 'alcohol story' (*vulnerability hangover coming in hot). When Michelle Porterfield entered my last round of Podcast to Profit and I helped her optimize her business model, I knew Holy Spirit was calling me to share my story for her audience on her podcast, Set Free Sisterhood. But... I was scared! My past felt embarrassing, gross, and it seemed easier to tuck it away in a nice, unseen place. By the end of working with Michelle, Holy Spirit had convicted me to ask her if I could share my testimony on her podcast. She said yes, we prayed, and here it is. I wanted to share this on my platform as well because I know there is someone out there who is ready for freedom and knows it's time to ask themselves some hard questions. I made excuses and hurt my body for far longer than I needed to. I lied to myself about why I 'needed a drink to have fun' for too long. And I want to help YOU see that there is freedom on the other side of idols, addiction, and worldly norms. I pray that this testimony blesses someone today, in Jesus' name. Grab some popcorn, it's about to get raw.
