In episode of the Dangerous History Podcast, CJ shares his thoughts on the meaning, significance, & fallout of the "debate" that took place a few weeks ago on the Joe Rogan Experience between Dave Smith & Douglas Murray, especially in regards to credentialism & the Cult of the "Expert," as well as the phenomenon of the Neo-Neocons (next-generation Neoconservatives) such as Douglas Murray, James Lindsay, Konstantin Kisin, Jordan Peterson, & others who are currently on an ideological jihad to try to purge the current MAGA/Trumpian American Right of any libertarian & paleoconservative elements who might actually believe in the idea of "America First," just as previous generations of Neocons did with earlier instances of grassroots, populist rightwing movements which had strong anti-interventionist & libertarian instincts. Remember Shuffle finally turns to the biggest geopolitical catastrophe of the 2000s, the Iraq War. On this table-setting episode, tThe Shuffle Bois trace the long history of American collaboration with Saddam Hussein's regime, the souring of that productive relationship in the 1990s, and the obsessive fixation America developped for regime change in Iraq, both on the Neoconservative and Liberal Interventionist sides of the divide. They then look at some of the Themes and Big Ideas of American Middle Eastern foreign policy through the late 20th century. They then close out with a palate-cleanser film review of 1999's “Three Kings.”Give Remember Shuffle a follow on Twitter And on Instagram @RememberShufflePod to interact with the show between episodes. In this week's episode Mike and Elizabeth discuss an article that provides a brief history of how tyrants break confidence in democracy by destroying public trust in institutions, and attacking the government as wasteful and incompetent. The author (Anthony Brunello) describes the tactic of cutting government to ensure it is less effective, thus making it easier to sell the idea that government fails us and only a strongman can salvage what is left. We discuss the author's take on Project 2025, American culture wars, and religion. Along the way, Mike helps Elizabeth understand some terminology (NeoLiberal and NeoConservative) and political history. Elizabeth worries that a quote attributed to Kissinger, " . . . people who have become accustomed to stability can't bring themselves to believe what is happening when faced with a revolutionary power and are therefore ineffective in opposing it," is all too apt apt, but Mike ends on a high note. He believes that American democracy is strong and will survive the current challenges. Podcast notesBrunello, A. R. (2025). Leo Strauss was a German-Jewish emigrant to the United States, an author, professor and political philosopher. Born in 1899 in Kirchhain in the Kingdom of Prussia to an observant Jewish family, Strauss received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg in 1921, and began his scholarly work in the 1920s, as well as participating in the German Zionist movement. In 1932, a recommendation letter from the jurist and later Nazi party member Carl Schmitt enabled Strauss to leave Germany on a Rockefeller Foundation grant, shortly before Adolf Hitler came to power. Strauss continued his work in France and England before settling in the United States in 1937, teaching at the New School and other colleges, and then becoming professor of political science at the University of Chicago in 1949. It is in America that Strauss wrote his most famous works, including Persecution and the Art of Writing, On Tyranny, Natural Right and History, The City and Man, What Is Political Philosophy?, and many other works. His work typically takes the form of interpretations of ancient authors, especially Plato. Over the years, Strauss attracted many dedicated students, who became known as “Straussians,” spreading his influence not only within academia but eventually into the American government. Straussians would attain such prominence and eventually cause such controversy, that, decades after Strauss' death, the field of political science was gripped by what would become known as “the Strauss wars.” Strauss wrote in a difficult, densely layered and evasive style that has led to long-lasting disputes about whether his apparent endorsement of liberal democracy was genuine, or whether his work contains an esoteric teaching about human hierarchies, one that might justify illiberal and anti-democratic Machiavellian coups. Heightening the urgency of figuring out what Strauss truly stood for is the widespread view that Straussians who worked in the State Department and Defense Department and who came to be called “Neoconservatives” were instrumental in launching the Iraq war in 2003, and are otherwise associated with hawkish, not to say hubristic and imperial U.S. foreign policy. But, leaving the neocons aside; Leo Strauss, Jewish Nazi? Could such a charge possibly be fair? Who is the real Leo Strauss? These are the questions that bring us to this author and this book. William Henry Furness Altman is a retired public high school teacher and author of many articles and books on figures including Plato, Cicero, Plotinus, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and indeed, Leo Strauss. The book we are discussing today is entitled The German Stranger: Leo Strauss and National Socialism (Lexington Books, 2010). William Altman's first published book is an extensively researched and exhaustively footnoted work substantiating his charge that Leo Strauss, the revered and influential Jewish emigre, and recipient of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, did indeed harbor a lifelong commitment to the principles of Nazi ideology and that such indeed is Strauss' secret teaching. They discuss the origins of conservatism in the 18th century and its evolution through the progressive era and the New Deal. They also explore the role of National Review and other conservative publications in shaping the conservative movement. The conversation touches on the compromises made by conservatives during the civil rights movement and the rise of neoconservatism in the Republican Party. The conversation explores the history and influence of neoconservatism, highlighting its origins in the split between nationalist and internationalist communists. The internationalist Marxists, aligned with Trotsky, aimed for a world revolution to establish communism globally. As the Soviet Union faltered, many ex-Trotskyites became advocates of internationalist democracy, promoting democracy and human rights as the means to make the world a better place. The neoconservatives, a small group of power brokers, infused this internationalist mindset with anti-Sovietism and strategically took over the conservative movement. They controlled the framing and narratives, influencing policy and staffing the government.TakeawaysConservatism in America has its roots in the 18th century and was influenced by figures like Edmund Burke. The progressive era and the New Deal brought about significant changes in the American political order, leading to the emergence of the conservative movement.National Review played a crucial role in shaping the conservative movement, with figures like Bill Buckley leading the way.Conservatives made compromises during the civil rights movement to maintain unity in the face of totalitarianism.Neoconservatism emerged as disillusioned leftists left the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party. Historian Ronnie Grinberg's new book Write Like a Man: Jewish Masculinity and the New York Intellectuals couldn't be better "Know Your Enemy" fodder. (Main characters include: Midge Decter and Norman Podhoretz, Diana and Lionel Trilling, Irving Howe, Alfred Kazin, and Mary McCarthy!) These writers, Grinberg shows, built and sustained a novel, secular, Jewish, and masculine concept of the intellectual life, an ideology that would profoundly affected the development of Cold War liberalism, neo-conservativism, Zionism, and right-wing reaction against feminism, gay rights, and black power. As we discovered in this conversation, it's impossible to make sense of the creative and scholarly contributions of the New York Intellectuals — good and bad — without gender as an essential lens. Moreover, Grinberg shows how scholars can easily misapprehend the deeper motivations for neoconservative reaction (among those such as Podhoretz and Decter) if they are not attentive to the centrality of gender, sexuality, and patriarchy in these thinkers' work. Inna Perheentupa's book Feminist Politics in Neoconservative Russia: An Ethnography of Resistance and Resources (Policy Press, 2022) is a nuanced and compelling analysis of grassroots feminist activism in Russia in the politically turbulent 2010s. Drawing on rich ethnographic data, the author illustrates how a new generation of activists chose feminism as their main political beacon, and how they negotiated the challenges of authoritarian and conservative trends. As we witness a backlash against feminism on a global scale with the rise of neoconservative governments, this highly relevant book decentres Western theory and concepts of feminism and social movements, offering significant insights into how resistance can mobilize and invent creative tactics to cope with an increasingly repressed space for independent political action. Over the years, the neo-cons accused everyone who didn't support Middle East nation-building of suffering from a pre-9/11 mindset, but they suffer from a pre-3/20 mindset. They fail to recognize the Great Reset of March 2020 and that our foreign policy cannot be the same as it was before. I explain why, thanks to their policies, we are no longer in a position where we can counter Russia and China, so any provocation without the ability to back it up will cause maximum pain to Americans.
