Giorgia Meloni is Italy's first female Prime Minister, and her political star has risen rapidly - from working class roots in Rome, to becoming one of the most important and divisive leaders in Europe. A populist whose party has roots in Italian fascism, and who takes a hard right stance on migration and family values, she has formed a kinship with Donald Trump, who this month alone has promoted her autobiography and her speeches online, and called her “beautiful” on stage. In today's episode, journalist Barbara Serra joins us to discuss Meloni's increasingly crucial role in US-European relations. In 1994, Ukraine surrendered the world's third-largest nuclear arsenal, inherited from the collapsed Soviet Union, in exchange for security assurances from the US, Russia, and the UK. Ukraine's denuclearisation is often considered a huge success story in nuclear non-proliferation, but in retrospect, it may have paved the way for Putin's 2022 invasion. As talk of US-European security guarantees for Ukraine resurfaces in the context of tentative Russia-Ukraine peace talks, we speak with BBC Paris correspondent Andrew Harding about the history of the 1994 agreement, and consider whether Ukraine would ever again believe promises made to protect it.Producers: Sam Chantarasak and Xandra Ellin Executive producer: Annie Brown Mix: Travis Evans Senior news editor: China CollinsFrance's President Emmanuel Macron (R) and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky arrive to chair the Coalition of the Willing Summit, at the Elysee presidential palace in Paris, on September 4, 2025. Moody Soliman, CEO & Co-founder of Ryp Labs: $11 Million Raised to Eliminate Food Waste Through Natural Sticker Technology

Category Visionaries

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2025 23:28

Ryp Labs is tackling one of the world's most pressing problems: food waste. Every minute, enough food is wasted globally to feed over 1 million people for a day. If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest producer of greenhouse gases behind the US and China. In this episode of Category Visionaries, we sat down with Moody Soliman, CEO and Co-founder of Ryp Labs, to learn how his ag-tech startup raised $11 million to develop a revolutionary sticker technology that extends produce shelf life using natural plant compounds.   Topics Discussed: Ryp Labs' five-year R&D journey to develop natural food preservation technology The pivot from targeting US/European markets to focusing on Central and South America How the company leveraged trade shows and competitions for organic marketing The decision to target distributors and packing houses over direct-to-consumer sales Scaling challenges and the critical "ship it" moment that validated their technology Future expansion plans into meat, seafood, dairy, and other food categories GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Follow market pull, not your assumptions: Ryp Labs initially targeted US and European markets, assuming these large, developed markets would be most receptive. However, they found no traction because established players had been "doing the same thing for 50 years" and were resistant to change. When they pivoted to Central and South America, they discovered customers who were highly motivated to export internationally and faced significant cold chain breaks. Moody explained, "We ended up completely shifting our go to market strategy to focus on those areas... they are highly motivated to ship their fruit internationally and to export it to the US or to Europe, because that's where they can get much higher prices." B2B founders should test multiple markets and follow where customers are genuinely desperate for solutions, not where they think the biggest opportunity exists. Use trade shows and competitions as unfair advantages: Ryp Labs leveraged their "fun and easy to comprehend" technology to win numerous competitions and secure organic media coverage. Moody noted, "We have almost unfair competitive advantage that it's such a fun technology and such an easy technology to comprehend. So we won a lot of those competitions and awards and that gives us free advertisement." For deep-tech startups with limited marketing budgets, industry competitions and trade shows can provide disproportionate exposure and credibility. B2B founders should identify events where their technology's unique aspects can create memorable impressions. Break the engineer's pencil at the right moment: Despite his team's protests that the product wasn't ready, Moody made the critical decision to ship to a major retailer in 2021. "All right guys, we've taken it as far as we can right now. We just got to put it out there and put it in a customer's hand... we'll learn if it doesn't work." This decision provided the validation and momentum needed to continue development. B2B founders in deep-tech must balance perfectionism with market feedback - sometimes shipping an imperfect product to the right customer is more valuable than months of additional development. Target the most centralized part of the supply chain: Ryp Labs initially considered selling directly to consumers but recognized the variability in handling would create inconsistent results and blame on their technology. Instead, they focused on distributors and packing houses where "all 1 million pack of strawberries is going from the farm into 2 degrees C" with predictable transportation conditions. This centralized approach allows them to "sell a million stickers to a distributor as opposed to going to 100,000 customers and selling them 10 stickers each." B2B founders should identify the most controlled and centralized points in their target industry's value chain. Design for regulatory constraints from day one: Coming from the medical device industry, Moody applied a crucial lesson: "You don't develop a technology and then go back and look at the regulatory process... You have to look at that on the front end, really understand what the requirements are going to be from a safety standpoint, and then develop the product to meet those requirements." This approach enabled Ryp Labs to achieve OMRI listing for organic produce and use only food-grade compounds already recognized as safe by the FDA. B2B founders should map regulatory requirements early and design their technology to meet these constraints rather than retrofitting compliance later.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co   //   Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. Célia Belin of the European Council on Foreign Relations tells RFI that Donald Trump's administration is treating Europe less as a partner and more as a rival. In backing nationalist movements and undermining multilateral institutions, it is exporting a political mode of operation that risks fracturing European unity. The impact of Donald Trump's second term in the White House is being felt far beyond US borders. Observers say this ripple effect can be seen across Europe, not just in policy but in the continent's political culture itself. For Dr Célia Belin of the European Council on Foreign Relations, the stakes are nothing less than the future of European liberal democracy. In her latest ECFR report, MAGA Goes Global: Trump's Plan for Europe, Belin warns that what might appear to be chaotic decisions from the Oval Office are, in fact, part of an ideological project.“There's actually a strong direction, a clear destination,” Belin told RFI. “Trump, surrounded by loyalists and MAGA Republicans, is ready to implement his plan – to push back on liberal democracy, and to push back on Europe."According to her, he sees Europe as “an extension of his political enemies – liberals and progressives” and views its institutions as bureaucratic hurdles rather than allies in global leadership.Culture wars without bordersTrump's administration – bolstered by figures including Vice President JD Vance and media mogul Elon Musk – has also made overtures to Europe's far right. They have voiced support for Germany's far-right AfD party and France's Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, including on Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) – helping to disseminate nationalist and populist rhetoric across the continent.“We're seeing a systematic attack on the liberal model that Europe represents,” said Belin. “This ‘Trumpian wave' has fired up nationalist opposition in Europe, even if it hasn't created a united front."‘Free Le Pen': US conservatives rally behind French far-right leaderNon merci to MAGAHowever, some of the European political parties that share Trump's scepticism of liberal institutions are treading carefully when it comes to embracing his brand of politics. While leaders such as Viktor Orbán in Hungary openly welcome MAGA-style backing, others see it as a double-edged sword.Following her recent legal conviction, Le Pen received support from MAGA-aligned figures. But her party responded with conspicuous silence.“They don't want or need this Trumpian support,” Belin noted. “Their political strategy is not about aligning with MAGA America – it's more French, more sovereignist."Embracing Trump too openly could risk undermining years of effort to mainstream the National Rally's image. “Nationalists are realising that now – it brings fuel to the fire, yes, but it also complicates their own domestic positioning," said Belin.Trump's first 100 days: Revolution or destruction? The view from FranceEurope respondsFrench President Emmanuel Macron was among the first European leaders to sound the alarm on the changing nature of the US-European alliance. "I want to believe that the United States will stay by our side but we have to be prepared for that not to be the case," he said in a televised address to the nation in March.I January, in a speech to French ambassadors, he said: "Ten years ago, who could have imagined it if we had been told that the owner of one of the largest social networks in the world would support a new international reactionary movement and intervene directly in elections, including in Germany."German Chancellor Olaf Scholz followed suit, criticising Musk's decision to give the AfD a platform just weeks before Germany's federal elections. However, Belin points out that the European response is still taking shape. “It's brand new as a phenomenon,” she said. “Europeans were prepared to be challenged on trade, on security – even on Ukraine. But this cultural challenge is unprecedented.”Meloni positions herself as Europe's ‘trump card' on visit to White HouseStill, as Belin notes, Trumpism is not a winning formula everywhere. “Turning fully Trumpist would derail Marine Le Pen's strategy. It's not a winning strategy in France,” she said. “But in more insurgent political systems, it might be."And there is concern too that Trumpism could outlive Trump himself.“There's been a transformation in the perception of America's global role,” Belin said. “And that will stick around. It will be pushed by some of the nationalist parties in our countries. That is the Trumpist legacy”.

J. D. Vance delivers a seismic geopolitical speech at the Munich Security Forum. Vance, Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy get into a shouting match before television cameras. Relations between the United States and Europe are deteriorating before our very eyes. In one of our best episodes of the year so far, we invited the great Ivan Krastev to help us understand what is happening.Ivan is one of the brightest minds in Europe — an incisive analyst, historian of ideas, and ever-present track-two diplomat who is always talking to absolutely everyone. He is chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia, Bulgaria and Albert Hirschman Permanent Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He writes regularly for the Financial Times and the New York Times.Ivan tells Shadi Hamid and Damir Marusic that Trumpism, and its policy toward Europe is not conservative or isolationist, but “a revolutionary movement.” This revolution is what reconciles the populist and libertarian elements of Trump's administration: “You're trying to fight bureaucracy by concentrating power in a charismatic leader. Less state, more emperor.” You can see this, Ivan argues, in the way Trump runs his coalition like an imperial court, where opposing figures — like Steve Bannon and Elon Musk — vie for the attention of the emperor. You can also see it in the fact that Trump himself says contradictory things: “A charismatic figure can contain contradictions.”What does this mean for Europe? “Empires fall when the center sees itself as a hostage not as a hegemon,” Ivan argues, and Trump, along with Republicans, long to divest themselves of the Empire. This means applying pressure on Europe to bend to its demands — be it about Ukraine, or Greenland, or immigration. It also means that, inadvertently, Trump has reawakened European nationalism: “The new European politics is nationalist, the populists are internationalist.”This is a rich episode, full of insightful koans from a longtime observer of international affairs. Damir takes the conversation in the direction of what exactly fuels the Right and its “enthusiasm for destruction.” Shadi presses Ivan on the recently overturned elections in Romania, and what this means about the future of European democracy. In our bonus section for paid subscribers, the three men discuss why charismatic political leaders can live with contradictions; the “fast track between [political] office and prison”; how Trump has inadvertently created a new US-European consensus on immigration and state intervention in the economy, and why “you can't stop a revolution by defending institutions. You need your own version of tomorrow.”Required Reading and Viewing:* J. D. In Munich last weekend, J.D. Vance shocked Europe with his speech castigating Europeans as having the ‘wrong values' and not being ‘democratic'. Meanwhile, Trump and co. are doing the very democratic thing by being in Saudi Arabia and negotiating with Putin over Ukraine behind Zelenskyy's back – possibly presaging ‘a deal' that will be struck excluding Ukrainian input at all.     As this episode drops, European leaders are finally trying to get out in front of events by meeting in Paris in an emergency summit, to counter with their own ‘peace proposal' that would actually be beneficial for Ukraine's future. Disorderly much?    In this episode of Disorder, Jane Kinninmont tries to navigate these complexities in conversation with Jason Pack, as she brings us her personal reportage from last weekend's Munich Security Conference. During her visit there, we hear three on-the-spot interviews (Serhiy Leschenko, advisor to Zelensky's chief of staff Andriy Yermak; Todor Tagarev, former Bulgarian defence minister; and Ottilia Anna Maunganidze, head of special projects at the Institute of Security Studies) - discussing the shifting dynamics of US-European relations, the implications of Trump 2.0 on the Ukraine conflict, and the urgent need for Europe to reassess its defense priorities in light of potential US unpredictability. Lenny Helsing in conversation with David Eastaugh https://preciousrecordingsoflondon.bandcamp.com/album/pre-048-the-green-telescope-andy-kershaw-session-230186 Forerunners to The Thanes, The Green Telescope started out in 1981 as ardent ambassadors for 60s-style psychedelic sounds, soon becoming well known around Edinburgh for putting together exotic-sounding shows featuring freak-out style lights. A couple of line-up changes later, they took fresh inspiration from the British beat group era plus the US/European teen garage-punk explosion – think ‘Nuggets' and ‘Pebbles'. There were only two singles – including the much-sought-after ‘Face In A Crowd' seven-inch – so this, their only BBC session from 1986, is a proper one-off, capturing the spirit and sound of the times via a swirling organ, a psych heart and three totally unreleased tracks. Plus one that was recorded only 20 years later in a different version by the Thanes.

Nickel continues trading either side $21,000 as LME inventories continue to creep lower towards 37,000 tonnes despite talk of large surpluses.  China saw inflow of Russian cathode – 7,000-8,000 tonnes – will be see how this flows through Chinese market or ends up overhanging Chinese market.Debt deal helped put bounce back in copper and floor under nickel prices.  Given global slowdown, still think test of $20,000 possible before we trend higher by year-end. Battery restocking – lithium prices up 13% week-over-week as seeing restock well underway.  As I've said before, collapse in lithium caused destocking and drop in battery demand through first half and that we'll see an aggressive restocking which looks like is now well underway.“Great convergence” continues – discounts narrowed again with nickel prices lower and sulphate prices higher – sulphate discounts now less than half of what they were 6 weeks ago.  NPI discounts also narrowed slightly.Indonesia – part of conference and series of site visitsKey takeaways:Nickel price index – government not going to put export tax on NPI, but establish Indonesia reference price – think this is the way government will extract additional value for Indonesia. Important as no floor price for limonite (HPAL) unlike saprolite (NPI) – part of reason building MHP capacity. There will be ONEC – way for Indonesia captureFocus on growing battery supply chain volumes starting with HPAL/MHP, matte.  No further talk of more stainlesss capacity – good for US/European stainless producers who have healthy price premiums. Taking advantage of limonite being mined to get to saproliteLots of capacity coming – 4 million tonnes approved through 2030 (we'll need all of it as no western supply growth coming yet).  But will need 500 million tonnes – presenter from Indonesia government bureau doubtful that can supply that much. Ore grades definitely the risk – some of plants we went already using 1.5%, most using 1.6-1.65%.  Was 1.8% 2 years ago – don't think people factoring in derating of plant.  33 MW furnace used to 8ktpa, at 1.6% is 7ktpaLots of open property – don't seem to be rushing to reclaim – not good for runoffBrimob – Indonesia special forces at each facility

This week we're joined by Sean Peche, who you may know as a founder and portfolio manager at Ranmore Fund Management here in London, or from his popular content on LinkedIn. From either, you'll know that Sean is not afraid to share his mind through thought-provoking commentary in his signature slightly cheeky style. Sean is also passionate about value investing so it was natural for us to grab him on the pod. Sean's investment career began in South Africa in 1997 when he joined Old Mutual as an equity analyst. In 1999 he then joined Decillion Capital as one of its founding members and co-managed their successful Big Rock fund – a South African based hedge fund. In 2001 he relocated to London with Decillion to co-manage a US European hedge fund. He left them in 2003 to join Orbis Investment Advisory, before then leaving again to establish Ranmore Fund Management in 2008. In today's episode Juan and Simon Adler sat down with Sean to discuss the art of communication and building a first-class LinkedIn following, including going toe-to-toe with other thought leaders like Terry Smith, the importance of numbers before narrative, the characteristics of a value manager in today's world, recency bias in today's market and how market participants get financial concepts like diversification wrong, and the future of active and passive. Small town Alabama rocked my priors. “People here are very judgemental, they look down on you based on wealth, your house, your car or if you're working in consumer-facing retail”, explained Hannah (a young waitress). Wait a minute. Social judgement based on wealth? I expected social conservativism, not competitive consumerism. When I went to family barbecues, no one gossiped about impropriety. They were far more interested in prosperity. All the couples were dual earners, driving mighty SUVs. Cars are a major status signal: portable displays of wealth and affluence, often heavily bought on credit, to keep up with the Joneses. I wonder, does rising income inequality fuel female employment? Might this explain US-European differences?
