On Sunday, The Washington Post, El Universal in Mexico, and Lighthouse Reports published “Death and Deterrence in the Rio Grande,” a yearlong investigation on drowning deaths of asylum seekers. As the U.S.-Mexico investigations editor for Lighthouse Reports, I helped collect the data, did reporting, and coordinated the binational investigation. We wanted to examine how border militarization, including Texas' Operation Lone Star, contributes to the growing number of drowning deaths in the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. As a longtime border reporter, I had never encountered a comprehensive, binational investigation of this issue, so a year ago, we set out to document what was happening, especially in the Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras corridor on the Rio Grande, which has seen the highest number of drownings. The investigation began November 15, 2023, when I and my colleagues Daniel Howden, director at Lighthouse Reports, and Justin Hamel, an independent photojournalist, set out from the boat ramp at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass. Leading us down the river was Jessie Fuentes, owner of Epi's Canoes and Kayaks. We set out at sunrise as fog drifted across the river, lending it a ghostly, ethereal ambience. But we were soon met with a cold, hard reality: desperate families stranded on islands in the middle of the river. We came across a family of four, the father with a toddler on his shoulders, standing in the freezing water. Soldiers in Texas yelled at them to go back to Mexico. During our investigation, we found that in 2023, one out of every 10 people who died in the river was a child. Our trip down the river was a heartrending experience, one I'll never forget. In this special Backlight & Border Chronicle podcast, I discuss our investigation's findings with my Lighthouse colleagues Beatriz Ramahlo da Silva and Tessa Pang. And please check out the full investigation published by our media partners The Washington Post and El Universal. You can also read about how we undertook the lengthy data collection and analysis for this project at Lighthouse Reports. A couple of interesting businesses hit the market recently, which we talk about on this week's Access Louisville podcast. The first is Colonial Gardens, a South Louisville landmark that's home to four restaurants: Hokkaido Ramen & Sushi, Costa Del Sol, Craft House Pizza and The B.A. Colonial. It was redeveloped by Louisville-based Underhill Associates starting in 2017. LBF Senior Reporter Joel Stinnett spoke with Underhill Associates president Jeff Underhill about why now is the right time to sell. “We're developers. We're not buy and hold guys," he told Stinnett. The fact that the development is full with the four restaurants having strong leases is probably a strong selling point as well. After that, Reporter Michael L. Jones tells us about Third Street Dive being put on the market. He spoke with Lynne Frost, who's owned the establishment since 2010 about how the bar still does good business and has actually become a bit touristy in more recent years (it's close to several hotels) even while maintaining its punk rock identity. Later in the show we chat about the closure of Pivot Brewing, a visit by the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, a new "secret" garden speakeasy in Shelby Park and the latest on the redevelopment of Louisville Gardens. Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. //The Wire Weekly Rollup//February 18-24, 2024//-----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Red Sea/HOA: This week marked significant escalations in the region following the most successful targeting of a commercial vessel by Houthi forces so far during the Red Sea Crisis. Sunday night, the M/V RUBYMAR was struck with multiple projectiles, forcing the crew to abandon ship. Originally the vessel was reported as being sunk, but several days after the strikes, imagery obtained by the BBC confirms that the vessel is still afloat, albeit barely. The imagery confirms that severe flooding has caused severe trim to stern, so much so that her deck is awash at the base of the accommodation superstructure. Additionally, her bulbous bow was almost completely above the waterline in the photos provided. The RUBYMAR was allegedly towed into port Djbouti where salvage operations continue. In response to the success of this strike, the next day Houthi forces targeted several other commercial vessels, including one which was delivering humanitarian aid to Yemen. The M/V SEA CHAMPION was struck with at least one Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile (ASBM), but was able to continue her voyage to the Yemeni port of Aden where she offloaded her cargo of grain. In the same engagement, the M/V NAVIS FORTUNA and the USS LABOON (DDG 58) were also targeted with missiles, the former successfully. An American MQ-9 Reaper drone was also shot down by Houthi forces during the escalation, which marks the second drone downed by Houthi forces since this conflict intensified in October, 2023.Throughout the week CENTCOM forces have continued daily missile strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. Very few details of these now-regular strikes have been made public.-HomeFront-NY: The revelation of a recent rule change has indicated that potentially tens of thousands of illegal immigrants have been allowed to receive substantial cash payments in addition to the monthly benefits already provided. This follows the announcement of $53 million in prepaid cards being issued to illegal immigrants in NYC, which includes payments of up to $10,000 per illegal immigrant, without any accountability requirements or checking identity documents. AC: Quietly passed last year, the New York Governor's office changed the eligibility requirements for it's Safety Net Assistance (SNA) program to include illegal immigrants. Though accountability is virtually nonexistent, city officials estimate that approximately 10% of illegals living in NYC (around 17,000) are receiving benefits through this program.TX: Border situation continues as before, despite little independent media coverage of the truth on the ground. Events in the vicinity of Eagle Pass have largely developed into politics, with Shelby Park mostly serving as a location for photo opportunities or press events due to the halting of illegal immigration in this very small area.

When it became increasingly clear that the federal government was not going to stop the flow of illegal aliens across the border, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began taking strategic action. “You look at the results, and they speak for themselves,” Brent Smith says of what Abbott has done to slow the flood of illegal crossings. Smith serves as the county attorney for Kinney County, Texas, which borders Mexico and is about 130 miles west of San Antonio. Because of the enormous influx of illegal aliens crossing the border, Smith says, “Everything has changed” in his community. “People now, when you hear a helicopter flying in the air, kids know to run home,” Smith said. “And if you hear sirens, 99% of the time, it has to do with illegal immigration.”Even schools have "military barriers around them" to prevent smugglers from driving through the campus, he added. The county attorney also said his workload has multiplied many times over as frequent arrests of illegal aliens are made in the county. According to Smith, “preventing the entry, repelling them at the river” is the way to address the crisis. That's what Abbott has done in Eagle Pass, Texas, at Shelby Park. Under Abbott's leadership, the Texas National Guard is preventing the Border Patrol from processing illegal aliens in Shelby Park, which is on the Rio Grande and which served as a popular crossing point until Texas assumed control of it. The Texas National Guard has laid concertina wire fencing along the riverbank and built a 4,500-foot border wall using shipping containers topped with sharp razor wire to repel illegal crossings. Because crossings into Shelby Park have fallen to almost none, Smith says, Abbott will likely “expand the tactic that he's using in Shelby Park to other places.” Meanwhile, the Biden administration has been critical of Abbott's recent tactics and has previously taken legal action against the governor's efforts to secure the border. Smith joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain the ongoing legal tensions between Texas and the federal government, and what could be next as the border crisis continues to unfold. Enjoy the show! //The Wire//1800Z February 19, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: HOUTHI FORCES SINK SHIP IN BAB EL MANDEB STRAIT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Western mainstream media reporting over the past 24 hours has suggested that Egypt may be preparing for the reception of Palestinian refugees. Planet Labs satellite imagery was provided to media groups that indicates a large swath of land is being cleared in Egypt, just across the border from Rafah. Egyptian authorities have denied these claims, as the policy of strategic ambiguity precludes Egypt from making a de facto admission that the expulsion of Palestinians into Egypt might be possible. AC: Though it is challenging to verify anything that is provided to media groups, the quiet preparation of emergency refugee camps in Egypt is very likely following the Israeli announcement of imminent operations in Rafah. Though the politics of the events in Gaza cloud the situation on the ground, it is clear that Egypt has always considered the expulsion of Palestinians into Egypt as a possibility, and if these preparations are confirmed, these actions to prepare for such strongly indicates that Egypt may believe this worst-case scenario is very likely.Red Sea/HOA: Houthi attacks on commercial shipping became more serious overnight following the sinking of a commercial vessel. Overnight, Houthi forces struck the M/V RUBYMAR (a Belize-flagged bulk cargo carrier) with multiple cruise missiles. The crew abandoned ship shortly after the strike. This morning, the RUBYMAR was reported as being sunk in the Bab el Mandeb Strait. AC: This marks the first (publicly-disclosed) successful sinking of a commercial ship by Houthi forces so far in this conflict. This morning, Houthi attacks continued as another vessel was targeted in a similar manner. An as-yet-unidentified vessel reported multiple explosions in close proximity to the vessel in the Gulf of Aden.-Homefront-TX: Border situation continues as before, despite little independent media coverage of the truth on the ground. Events in the vicinity of Eagle Pass have largely developed into politics, with Shelby Park mostly serving as a location for photo opportunities or press events due to the halting of illegal immigration in this very small area.Relations among defense forces in the region remain tepid as politics becomes more intertwined with the border protection mission. On Friday, Texas announced a $131 million plan to build a Forward Operating Base (FOB) near the southern U.S. border. FOB EAGLE BASE CAMP will be completed in September, and will reportedly be a larger version similar camps already in place throughout the region. AC: Though on paper this makes sense, creating a FOB virtually identical to those found overseas is mildly concerning for some. Using the term “FOB” to describe this base is almost certainly a political move to increasingly drive a wedge between the state and federal governments, or at the very least undermine and chip away at the perceived control of the federal State by using language and terminology that reinforces the military tone of illegal immigration being treated as an invasion.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Houthi forces, likely emboldened by their public sinking of a commercial ship, will likely continue targeting vessels in a similar manner. It has become clear via the daily successful targeting of commercial shipping that OPN PROSPERITY GUARDIAN is hopelessly ineffective in providing missile defense for commercial ships. U.S. Navy forces constantly report the ‘successful strike' of allegedly staged missiles and drones, yet the only limiting factor for the Houthis seems to be simply the lack of western vessels willing to take the risk of transiting the Red Sea. Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Texas Governor Greg Abbott's recent speech in Shelby Park highlighted his unwavering stance on border security and his commitment to curbing illegal immigration. Abbott, alongside Texas legislators, detailed the extensive measures taken to fortify the border, including the deployment of razor wire barriers and increased law enforcement presence. With a significant increase in border crossings, Abbott's administration reported over 480,000 apprehensions and deterrence of thousands of illegal entries, emphasizing the crisis's magnitude. Abbott also mentioned the state's efforts in constructing a border wall, surpassing previous federal initiatives. The governor underscored the need for robust border legislation and criticized the Biden Administration for its perceived failure in managing the crisis, asserting that every state is impacted by the influx of illegal drugs and human trafficking. BORDER CRISIS CONTINUES AT HOME.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Red Sea/HOA: Yesterday, CENTCOM confirmed U.S. forces engaged 2x Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs) that were allegedly being staged for an attack. No additional details were provided regarding this alleged newly-fielded weapons system. AC: It is also unclear what intelligence indicated these vessels were intended to be USVs or if these were simply unoccupied vessels. The use of USVs would be an expected escalation to be relied upon by Houthi forces, but it is unclear as to if this incident is an accurate representation of this potential escalation.Yemeni forces meanwhile continue operations to target what few Western commercial shipping vessels attempt to transit the Red Sea. Cruise missile and kamikaze drone attacks have dwindled following the grand transition of most shipping to the Cape Route. However, Houthi attacks on U.S. Navy vessels continue regularly, as do attacks on any vessel that does not abide by Yemeni transit procedures. This morning, unidentified personnel aboard a small craft attacked a commercial vessel with a possible RPG in the southern Red Sea.-HomeFront-TX: Yesterday a consortium of conservative Governors assembled for various press events in Eagle Pass. This event comes as doubts begin to grow regarding the effectiveness of the operation in Eagle Pass. According to Texas officials, around 3,000 immigrants were crossing the border in Eagle Pass daily, prior to the increased fortification efforts. That number has allegedly dropped to an average of three encounters per day (in just the areas where fortifications have been made).-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: It is important to note that the entirety of the fortifications in Eagle Pass are protecting but a few hundred meters of the southern U.S. border. Without question, the nearly 100% decrease in illegal border crossings in Eagle Pass is almost certainly due to most illegals being redirected just a few miles away from the high-profile areas around Shelby Park…and away from the preying eyes of journalists with cameras. A few hundred meters of concertina wire is not likely to overcome the substantial federal (and Organizations that are allegedly Non-Governmental) influence to increase the ease of illegal border crossings.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Abbot Reveals Significant Drop in Border Crossings After Razor Wire Fences Installed

Last Sunday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott shared some significant figures relating to the ongoing immigration issue near the U.S southern border, particularly in the vicinity of Eagle Pass. The data revealed a huge decline in daily undocumented crossings—specifically from about 4,000 to a mere trickle of three. This decrease can be tracked back to a recent initiative where the state decided to reinforce its border segment with deterrents like razor wire. This development has been facilitated by a Supreme Court ruling that retracted a ban, originally inhibiting the federal government from removing the border barriers that Texas had placed at Shelby Park. This specific island was subject to extensive securement carried out by The Texas National Guard as well as the Texas Department of Public Safety, transforming it into a formidable bulwark. Interactions between Governor Abbott and Maria Bartiromo on the 'Sunday Morning Futures' show became the backdrop for this announcement. Abbott emphasized his firm belief in safeguarding the southern border, a stance mirrored by several governors throughout the nation. This unity forms a stark contrast against the backdrop of a perceived inaction on part of the Biden administration. Abbott reiterated the importance of a state's right to self-defense, asserting that this notion was receiving considerable support from his counterparts in other states. He pointed out that the razor wire deployment and subsequent curtailment of border crossings provide compelling evidence of the effectiveness of resistance. Particularly in Eagle Pass, Abbott said efforts had led to an unprecedented reduction in crossings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We look at a poll that is based on people who make over $150,000 a year. I don't necessarily think the sample is the 1%, so this is a unique way of measuring, as I consider that population to be people who don't have to work at all. $150,000 is three times what the average American makes in a year, and the things that the people in this population are willing to do to make themselves feel safe and superior are frightening but not surprising. It's not the thought that counts in life but the results. Our entire movement has been acculturated to cheering on symbolic inputs on politicians rather than focusing on and demanding outcomes. This is why we had the flash point over Shelby Park at the border while Greg Abbott continues to disappoint where it matters. This is why Congress is focusing on impeaching Mayorkas while funding the border invasion. And this is why we continue electing RINOs in deep red states, often with Trump's support. Today, I discuss how I tried my hardest to keep James Lankford out of the Senate in Oklahoma, but Trump endorsed him again and he is supporting new RINOs even this year.  Learn more about your ad choices. The nation is rallying around Texas! Texas is unifying the nation like never before against the lawless Biden regime and their dereliction of duty at the southern border! As we speak, Democrats as well as Republicans, Trump as well as Robert Kennedy Jr, mayors, and governors from over 25 states across the nation are all rallying around Texas' efforts to secure our border and stop the lawless insanity that is being deliberately orchestrated by the Bumblin' Biden administration.  And it is literally killing Biden! Biden is politically bleeding over all of this! This has got to be, outside of the moral rightness of what Texas forces are doing right now, this has got to be one of the single most brilliant political moves we have ever seen, and I'm going to show you exactly why! Highlights: “The Texas National Guard, as we speak, continues to refuse federal officials entry to Shelby Park. Not only that, President Trump is calling on all red state governors, 25 of which have publicly declared their solidarity with Texas, to send their national guards down to the southern border to bolster the guardsmen who are securing the border!” “Biden can nationalize the National Guard. He can put the guard under his command and control, and thereby undermine Texas Governor Greg Abbott's refusal to allow federal agents anywhere near the razor wire. There's just one problem that these woke leftists have not seemed to consider. Texas has its own military!'” “There are reports now that volunteer patriot militias from at least 27 states have begun traveling to Texas in support of the Texas Military's ongoing efforts at securing the border!”   “Abbott is forcing the Biden administration into a complete and total no-win situation. They look weak if they don't respond to Texas's supposed provocation, and they look insane if they do respond and force the breaking open of the border to allow illegal migrants to pour into the nation by the hundreds of thousands!”   Resources: Don't let Big Tech WIN by staying connected to Dr Steve and joining the movement to reclaim our freedoms at: https://join.turleytalks.com/insiders-club=podcast Learn how to Trade like Nancy Pelosi at a special training at 12 PM EST! We cannot allow the GOP governors to embrace our issues while subverting them when it matters. This week's red-state "solidarity with Texas" movement has a lot of promise, but only if it is directed toward Texas fully assuming control over immigration and other states following. We cannot allow the Shelby Park razor-wire security perimeter to become a red herring while Biden continue to facilitate the surge of illegal aliens elsewhere. We're joined by Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies, who offers five innovative ways red states can dissuade illegal aliens from setting foot in their states. Between incentives to self-repatriate, criminalizing their presence, and cutting off their ability to work, they would leave the states regardless of what Biden is doing at the border. She also warns about contract labor organizations that help feed large companies with cheap labor and how states can go after their de facto human trafficking violations.  Learn more about your ad choices. Nikki Haley to drop out of the GOP primary race on Tuesday after placing second in New Hampshire to former President Donald Trump. Many Republicans believe Haley should leave the race so all available GOP resources can be allocated towards defeating President Joe Biden. Republicans spent over $167 million in losing efforts to defeat Trump in New Hampshire and Iowa, with plans to release millions more in future primaries. https://twitter.com/i/status/1750015374639390818 - Play Video After Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) exited the race Sunday, Haley’s path to the nomination did not appear to improve. In fact, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ endorsement of Trump further consolidated support behind the former president, placing pressure on Haley to also end her fledgling campaign. In all states besides New Hampshire, Trump leads by no less than 30 points. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said Trump is the de facto GOP nominee moving forward. “Congratulations to President Trump on another decisive win in New Hampshire and becoming the presumptive nominee of our party,” he said. Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) congratulated Trump on his big win Tuesday evening: “To no one’s surprise, @realDonaldTrump won BIG tonight in New Hampshire. President Trump’s message is resonating with voters. It’s only a matter of time until 45 becomes 47. Congratulations, Mr. President!” CEO of the Federalist Sean Davis urged Haley to drop out, noting that if she did not, she would be “fully owned by the left-wing Democrats.” “If Nikki Haley’s primary goal is to defeat Joe Biden in November, she will drop out tonight and endorse Trump. If she continues to stay in a race she cannot win just to attack Trump, then we’ll know she’s fully owned by the left-wing Democrats who are funding her campaign,” he said. Social media influencer Ryan Fournier demanded Haley just give up and drop out. “Nikki Haley is refusing to drop out, claiming “this race is far from over.” It’s been over from the start. You all betted on the worst happening to Trump to secure victory. It’s time to give it up.,” he said. Nate Cohn, the New York Times’ chief political analyst, wrote on Monday the polling undoubtedly shows Haley’s inevitable resignation from the race, so Trump can turn his focus to defeating President Joe Biden. “So, without a monumental shift in the race, he will secure the nomination in short order,” he said. “Too little, too late,” Haley backer and a former chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party, Fergus Cullen, told the New York Times about Haley’s prospects. “She had to inspire and engage unaffiliated voters, and I just haven’t seen her doing what she needs to do to reach that audience and turn them out in the numbers that she needs.” https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/immigration/2814985/biden-administration-demands-texas-grant-dhs-access-border/ Biden administration demands Texas grant border access following Supreme Court decision The Biden administration has demanded the state of Texas relinquish control of a 2.5-mile strip of land on the border and grant federal agents access following a Supreme Court decision that gave Border Patrol agents to slash state-installed razor wire. The Department of Homeland Security sent Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-TX) a letter Tuesday obtained first by the Washington Examiner in which General Counsel Jonathan Meyer called out the state for its inaction after the highest court rescinded an appeal court injunction and allowed federal police to cut down razor wire fencing in Eagle Pass in order to rescue and apprehend illegal immigrants as they cross the Rio Grande. “The state has alleged that Shelby Park is open to the public, but we do not believe this statement is accurate,” Meyer said. “To our knowledge, Texas has only permitted access to Shelby Park by allowing public entry for a memorial, the media, and use of the golf course adjacent to Shelby Park, all while continuing to restrict U.S. Border Patrol’s access to the park.” Meyer said the Supreme Court decision allowed federal law enforcement not only to cut wire at the border but to be present on the border, the latter of which has not been possible since the Texas National Guard commandeered the 2.5-mile strip of city land and locked out all federal employees on Jan. 10. “As you are aware, yesterday, the Supreme Court vacated the injunction prohibiting the Department from cutting or moving the concertina wire that Texas had placed along the border except in case of emergency, and restored the Department’s right to cut and move the concertina wire placed by Texas in order to perform their statutory duties,” Meyer wrote. “The Department must also have the ability to access the border in the Shelby Park area that is currently obstructed by Texas.” But despite the court’s decision, Texas National Guard soldiers reaffirmed the state’s position Tuesday. Soldiers in Eagle Pass installed more razor wire at the river and laid out more fencing and concertina wire despite the rain that swept through the region Tuesday, according to video. The DHS maintained in its letter that it had the upper ground in terms of legal ground that allowed its personnel to be on city land along the border. It cited the U.S. Code, in which the department acquired permanent real estate interests in and around Eagle Pass in 2008 to build border wall barriers in the vicinity. “Because the Department owns property rights to the areas depicted on the attached map, we demand that you immediately remove any and all obstructions on it,” Meyer said. Border Patrol still has limited access to a boat ramp within Shelby Park despite the state’s initial concession earlier in the land seizure to let agents load and unload a boat into the river. Meyer called for full access to the boat ramp and river. The Biden administration had threatened Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) with legal action on Jan. 14 if Texas did not relinquish control of land, but has not followed up with a lawsuit. “We demand that Texas cease and desist its efforts to block Border Patrol’s access in and around the Shelby Park area and remove all barriers to access in the Shelby Park area,” Meyer told Paxton in the letter. The showdown between state and federal leaders comes 12 days after three immigrants drowned attempting to wade across the river from Mexico on Jan. 12. Border Patrol officials in Eagle Pass were alerted to immigrants who had drowned and two others in distress and attempted to respond but were denied access at a gate into the state-seized land. The state has taken issue with Border Patrol cutting its wire on the basis that the wire would deter and prevent more illegal immigration. Federal law enforcement agents are required to arrest anyone who has illegally entered the country or is illegally present, including those who cross the river and are blocked from continuing up the riverbank by the razor wire. https://www.newsmax.com/world/globaltalk/holocaust-survivors-numbers-report-claims-conference/2024/01/23/id/1150570/ Almost 80 Years after the Holocaust, 245,000 Jewish Survivors Are Still Alive Almost 80 years after the Holocaust, about 245,000 Jewish survivors are still living across more than 90 countries, a new report revealed Tuesday. Nearly half of them, or 49%, are living in Israel; 18% are in Western Europe, 16% in the United States, and 12% in countries of the former Soviet Union, according to a study by the New York-based Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, also referred to as the Claims Conference. Before the publication of the demographic report, there were only vague estimates about how many Holocaust survivors are still alive. Their numbers are quickly dwindling, as most are very old and often of frail health, with a median age of 86. Twenty percent of survivors are older than 90, and more women (61%) than men (39%) are still alive. The vast majority, or 96% of survivors, are “child survivors” who were born after 1928, says the report “Holocaust Survivors Worldwide. A Demographic Overview'” which is based on figures that were collected up until August. “The numbers in this report are interesting, but it is also important to look past the numbers to see the individuals they represent,” said Greg Schneider, the Claims Conference’s executive vice president. “These are Jews who were born into a world that wanted to see them murdered. They endured the atrocities of the Holocaust in their youth and were forced to rebuild an entire life out of the ashes of the camps and ghettos that ended their families and communities." Six million European Jews and people from other minorities were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Holocaust. It is not clear exactly how many Jews survived the death camps, the ghettos or somewhere in hiding across Nazi-occupied Europe, but their numbers were a far cry from the pre-war Jewish population in Europe. In Poland, of the 3.3 million Jews living there in 1939, only about 300,000 survived. Around 560,000 Jews lived in Germany in 1933, the year Adolf Hitler came to power. At the end of World War II in 1945, their numbers had diminished to about 15,000 — through emigration and extermination. Germany's Jewish community grew again after 1990, when more than 215,000 Jewish migrants and their families came from countries of the former Soviet Union, some of them also survivors. Nowadays, only 14,200 survivors still live in Germany, the demographic report concluded. For its new report, the Claims Conference said it defined Holocaust survivors "based on agreements with the German government in assessing eligibility for compensation programs.” For Germany, that definition includes all Jews who lived in the country from Jan. 30, 1933, when Hitler came to power, to May 1945, when Germany surrendered unconditionally in World War II. The group handles claims on behalf of Jews who suffered under the Nazis and negotiates compensation with Germany's finance ministry every year. In June, the Claims Conference said that Germany has agreed to extend another $1.4 billion, (1.29 billion euros), overall for Holocaust survivors around the globe for 2024. Since 1952, the German government has paid more than $90 billion to individuals for suffering and losses resulting from persecution by the Nazis. https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/nyc-mayor-eric-adams-announces-2-billion-medical-debt-bailout-500000-residents NYC Mayor Eric Adams announces $2B medical debt bailout for up to 500K residents New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday a plan to buy up millions of dollars in medical debt owed by hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. In what the mayor said would be a "one-time" deal, the city will spend $18 million in taxpayer funds over the next three years to pay off medical debt owed by up to 500,000 residents. Officials estimate that the program will wipe out over $2 billion of medical debt owed in what they call the "largest municipal initiative of its kind in the country." "Getting health care shouldn't be a burden that weighs on New Yorkers and their families," Adams said in a statement. "Since day one, our administration has been driven by the clear mission of supporting working-class New Yorkers and today's investment that will provide $2 billion in medical debt relief is another major step in delivering on that vision. Up to half a million New Yorkers will see their medical debt wiped thanks to this life changing program — the largest municipal initiative of its kind in the country." Medical debt is among the top causes of bankruptcy in the United States, especially for those who lack health insurance. Nearly 1 in 10 U.S. adults (9%), or roughly 23 million people, owe medical debt, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. The collective medical debt owed by Americans nationwide is estimated by the group to be as much as $195 billion. New York City will partner with RIP Medical Debt, a New York-based nonprofit, to acquire debt portfolios and retiree debt from health care providers and hospitals and erase it, officials said. "No one chooses to go into medical debt — if you're sick or injured, you need to seek care. But no New Yorker should have to choose between paying rent or for other essentials and paying off their medical debt, which is why we are proud to bring this relief to families across the five boroughs, as we continue to fight on behalf of working-class New Yorkers," Adams said. Founded in 2014, RIP Medical Debt uses donations to buy debt from health care providers in bundles at a steep discount. The group uses data analytics to identify debtors who are most in need — households that earn less than four times the federal poverty level or whose debts are 5% or more of annual income — and buys their debt. Those who benefit from the organization's work receive letters in the mail announcing that their debt has been erased, tax and penalty-free. The group has partnered with local governments before, including with Cook County in Illinois to abolish more than $280 million in medical debt owed by residents, but never at the scale of its partnership with New York City. To supplement the city's spending on the program, RIP Medical Debt and the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City are soliciting private donations to raise additional funding over the next three years. https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/1/22/ngsegtq5k078chahr8s3etgus3983p New ‘Jurassic World’ Movie in the Works, 2025 Release Being Eyed A new “Jurassic World” movie is in the works. In fact, it’s so deep in development that Universal is eyeing a 2025 release date for this one. If that’s the case then it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if it goes into production this year. The good news is that “Jurassic Park” screenwriter David Koepp is back, his last script for the series was 1997’s “The Lost World.” Koepp is set write the script to introduce a “new Jurassic era,” which likely means Chris Pratt won’t be returning as the lead. It’s only been two years since the last one, 2022’s “Jurassic World Dominion”, but Universal’s clearly looking to make more of these films. No director is attached for now, but, the way things are speeding up, one will surely be hired soon.

In a recent development, the State of Texas, led by Governor Greg Abbott, is at odds with the Biden administration over border control. The issue escalated following a tragic incident at the US-Mexico border near Eagle Pass, Texas, where a Mexican mother and her two children drowned while attempting to cross the Rio Grande. Texas authorities have taken control of Shelby Park, a key location for migrant crossings, and have restricted federal border patrol access, asserting their right to handle the situation. The federal government criticizes Texas for inadequate attention to migrant safety, citing the recent drownings as an example. This standoff highlights the ongoing debate over border control, migrant safety, and state versus federal jurisdiction in managing immigration issues. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

It's Monday, January 22nd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Muslims in Sudan, Africa set fire to church On Friday, January 12th, Muslim extremists from the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group formerly operated by the Government of Sudan, set a church building on fire in Wad Medani, Sudan, reports Morning Star News. The blaze destroyed Bibles, hymnbooks, important documents and chairs  in the building. A pastor said Christians in Sudan fear they are being increasingly targeted. The Rapid Support Forces has killed civilians, raped women and girls, and looted homes and shops since taking control of the state in December. In Matthew 10:22-23, Jesus said, “You will be hated by everyone because of Me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another.” In the Open Doors' 2024 World Watch List of the countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian, Sudan now ranks #8, up from #10 the previous year. Trump: Nikki Haley “has no chance” Appearing on Sean Hannity's Fox News talk show, former president Donald Trump said that Nikki Haley doesn't have a chance of winning the New Hampshire primary tomorrow. TRUMP:  “She's not going to make it. She has no chance. She's got no way. MAGA – [Make America Great Again] -- is not going to be with her.” Hannity discussed why he thought the New Hampshire GOP primary was unfair. HANNITY: “I don't like their primary system for one reason. They have what's called an open primary. Already we know that nearly 4,000 Democratic voters have switched affiliation to Republican or undeclared, meaning independent, ahead of the primary, according to the Secretary of State's office. “Even [Republican] Governor [Chris] Sununu, not a friend of yours, told our own Neil Cavuto, that it's troubling that many of these people that will switch as Democrats and vote in the Republican primary, that, when push comes to shove, that they would choose Biden in the end over any Republican.” TRUMP: “So Democrats are allowed to vote. They're gonna vote for her because they don't want to run against me. They want to run against her. …  We are leading Biden in every poll. Michigan just came out -- we're leading by 11.  Georgia just came out -- we're leading by 13 points. We're leading everywhere now.” Nikki Haley: Trump lost the House, the Senate, & White House On January 18th, Nikki Haley spoke with reporters in New Hampshire about targeting Trump, reports RealClearPolitics.com. HALEY: “We were focused on DeSantis in Iowa. We're no longer focused on him. It's Trump in New Hampshire and Trump in South Carolina. “Trump says things. Americans aren't stupid to just believe what he says. The reality is, who lost the House for us? Who lost the Senate? Who lost the White House? Donald Trump, Donald Trump, Donald Trump. Nikki Haley will win every single one of those back for us. I've proven that. So. he can say whatever he wants.” Tens of thousands participate in annual March for Life Tens of thousands of pro-lifers braved the snow and the frigid cold on Friday, January 19th to participate in the nation's capital for the 51st annual March for Life, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Check out a link to a time-lapse video which shows the impressive size of the turnout at www.TheWorldview.com. Pro-lifers from across America gathered at the National Mall and marched a 2-mile route to a concluding spot between the U.S. Capitol and U.S. Supreme Court, celebrating the 2022 overturn of Roe v. Wade and building on that victory by urging Congress to take further action.  Former NFL player Benjamin Watson explained that even though Roe v. Wade was overturned, there is a lot of pro-life work yet to be done. WATSON: “I've been calling the period of time we're in right now, the New Fight for Life. “Roe is done, but we still live in a culture that knows not how to care for life. Roe is done, but the factors that drive women to seek abortions are ever apparent and ever increasing. Roe is done, but abortion is still legal and thriving in too much of America. Roe is done, but, even so, in the cold and the snow, you have continued to travel from around the nation to this place to recognize that the Fight for Life is not over. “God's Word challenges us in the book of Micah ‘to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly before our God.' I believe that this is the essence of what it means to be with every woman and for every child.” Jeanne Mancini, the President of March for Life, explained what a woman facing a crisis pregnancy really needs. MANCINI: “Studies have shown that 60% of women who choose abortion would have chosen life if they felt that they had more support. And not only that, but one in four women who choose abortion are coerced to have that abortion. “What does a woman most need when she is facing an unexpected pregnancy? She doesn't need fear mongering. She doesn't need shame. What she needs to hear is ‘You've got this' and ‘I will help you.'” And House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana shared a personal story. JOHNSON: “I am, myself, a product of an unplanned pregnancy. In January of 1972, exactly one year before Roe v. Wade, my parents, who were just teenagers at the time, chose life. And I am very profoundly grateful that they did. (Cheers) “We have to build a culture that encourages and assists more and more people to make that same decision. This is a critical time to help all moms who are facing unplanned pregnancies, to work with foster children, and to help families who are adopting to volunteer and assist our vital pregnancy resource centers, in our maternity homes and to reach out a renewed hand of compassion and to speak the truth and love. That's what we do.” In Jeremiah 1:5, God says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” Texas begins arresting, charging illegal immigrants And finally, Texas authorities began arresting illegal immigrants at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass on Wednesday after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defied a cease-and-desist letter sent by the Biden administration, reports The Epoch Times. The arrests were announced by Lieutenant Chris Olivarez at the Texas Department of Public Safety on X, formerly Twitter, complete with photos and videos. Lieutenant Olivarez said single adult migrant men and women were taken into state custody and charged with criminal trespassing under Governor Greg Abbott's new state law, which allows police to arrest and charge people suspected of entering the country illegally. Doctors at a hospital in Texas informed George Pickering that his son was in a state of brain death. They explained that his son showed "no brain activity" and the decision had been made to remove life support.    Pickering, however, was unconvinced by their assessment and resorted to extreme measures by drawing a firearm. He demanded that the doctors continue their efforts to save his son's life, threatening to use the gun if they refused.   This situation escalated into a tense standoff lasting three hours, during which Pickering faced off against the police while the medical team performed additional tests on his son.    The hospital was secured under lockdown as police negotiators tried to reason with Pickering, who remained adamant. In a steadfast effort to defend its borders, the State of Texas has begun to take measures against unlawful crossings by arresting illegal immigrants for trespassing in Shelby Park. The park, which covers a vast area of 47 acres in Eagle Pass, has recently experienced a significant surge in illegal migrant activity. The state sees its intervention as a necessary step, given the escalating situation at the border, an issue that it believes the federal authorities have contributed to. Texas' assumption of control over Shelby Park has been met with opposition from the Biden administration. They argue that the state's actions are hampering the efforts of the Border Patrol, raising tensions between Texas and federal authorities. Despite the backlash, Texas remains steadfast in its decision, insisting on the need to maintain orderly control over the park. In a recent announcement, Texas Department of Public Safety Spokesperson, Chris Olivarez, shed light on the increased actions taken by the state. He informed that their team, composed of state troopers, have initiated the process of arresting those illegal immigrants who are found trespassing in the park. The illegal crossings, predominantly involving single adult men and women, have prompted the state to take decisive action. Chris Olivarez continued to share updates, highlighting Texas' commitment towards maintaining the sanctity of its borders. Just a day after his initial announcement, he reported the arrest of three more illegal immigrants. These individuals, hailing from Azerbaijan and Ecuador, were apprehended after attempting to cross into the park through the barbed wire setup by Texas authorities. Their accusation was stern: criminal trespass. Upon their arrest, these illegal immigrants were promptly placed in custody. The act of trespass, regarded as criminal by the State of Texas, is being strictly enforced as part of the state's strategy to curb illegal border crossings. The Department of Homeland Security responded to these escalating events with a cease-and-desist letter to Texas. The federal agency demanded that the state relinquish control over Shelby Park, a measure that the Texas National Guard had implemented in order to tackle the escalating issue of illegal immigration. Texas, however, met this demand with defiance. The state's Attorney General, Ken Paxton, strongly affirmed that Texas has no intentions of relinquishing control over the park. Paxton was vocal about Texas' commitment to protecting its borders and expressed discontentment with what he perceived as lax border policies from the Biden administration. Paxton declared that Texas would not give in to what he described as 'destructive open-border policies' and pledged to continue Texas' fight in protecting its territory, sovereignty, and citizens. He firmly stated that rather than succumbing to threats from the federal government, Texas would assert its constitutional authority. Attorney General Paxton expressed his frustration with the Biden administration's approach towards border control. He criticized the administration for replying with threats, instead of addressing Texas's urgent requests for federal assistance. Paxton's message made it clear that Texas would not sit idle but would instead defend its rights and the welfare of its citizens. Paxton's response illuminated Texas' determination to assert its constitutional powers of self-defense. He urged the Department of Homeland Security to focus on fulfilling its responsibilities rather than seeking legal intervention. His sentiments serve as an underpinning to Texas' stance: unwavering and resolute in its commitment to protect its citizens. In his closing remarks, Attorney General Paxton made a declaration highlighting the state's resolve. He insisted that they have legal counsel ready to rebut any legal challenges to Texas' state-imposed control of the park. Emphasizing the right of self-defense, he implored the federal agencies to do their job and obey the law. The Biden administration's response to the dispute remains firm, indicating that they will utilize all legal avenues to regain control of the park. Yet, with Texas equally steadfast, a resolution seems distant. Unmoved by federal efforts, Texas continues to maintain tight control over its borders and the unfolding situation in Shelby Park. In a controversial move, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency at the border, assigning the Texas National Guard to take control of Shelby Park, an area critical to border activities. This decision directly impacts the U.S. Border Patrol's operations, particularly around the Eagle Pass boat ramp, a key access point on the Rio Grande. Texas, dissatisfied with the current administration's reluctance to reinforce immigration and border security laws, has taken matters into their own hands. The state has undertaken the detainment of illegal immigrants in a state border park. State officials, in a bold move, arrested those suspected of trespassing in a park in Eagle Pass, Texas. This heightened the legal standoff between Governor Greg Abbott and the current administration. This incident transpired on Wednesday night, amidst ongoing disputes relating to border security policies. Texas' escalating stance is a direct response to the steep increase in illegal migration at the U.S.-Mexico borderline. The issue has experts concerned for potential negative implications for the current president in the forthcoming election year. Texas' decision to restrict U.S. Border Patrol's access to Shelby Park and its surroundings has been commended. Federal Immigration officials believe it allows Border Patrol officers the freedom to focus on other sections of the vulnerable border. Texas' defiance towards a federal cease-and-desist issued to Attorney General Ken Paxton has led to an intensifying situation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

But every effort to do so is met with outrageous allegations, federal lawsuits, or both. The latest fight is over Texas taking control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas. The Texas National Guard has seized control of a park at the U.S. southern border and is now blocking Border Patrol from entering the area – part of an effort to stop the surge of illegal immigration into Texas and a move likely to significantly increase tensions between Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the federal government. The state government has taken control of Shelby Park in the city of Eagle Pass, Texas, which has been at the center of the migrant crisis that has engulfed the U.S. border. Authorities have now set up razor wire and fences to block off the area.

YEMEN VOWS RETALIATION FOR STRIKES. -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Following major airstrikes within Yemen, Houthi forces have vowed to retaliate. A few hours after the American and British attacks, Yemeni forces conducted an attack on a commercial shipping vessel. The attack was unsuccessful as the missile fired at the vessel missed, splashing down within 500m of the ship.Around the region, an observable increase in rocket attacks originating from Hezbollah in Lebanon was noted last night, but no indicators of a major offensive effort are present yet.Europe: Panic buying is underway in Sweden following statements by government officials regarding the possibility of war. Defense Minister Bohlin stated that “there could be war in Sweden”. The Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces reinforced these statements, urging the public that “On an individual level, you have to prepare yourself mentally”. AC: Though these statements are not out of the ordinary considering events in Europe, hearing such blunt admissions by high-ranking officials has been shocking for many Swedes. There are no indicators that war will break out in Sweden imminently, but as tensions remain extremely high throughout the continent, general preparedness is a prudent goal for citizens to consider.-HomeFront-TX: Significant developments are underway at the southern border. The State of Texas has seized land surrounding the infamous Shelby Park in Eagle Pass. TX National Guard forces have deployed in positions so as to block federal CBP agents from accessing the border. The adjacent boat launch also used by CBP is also now off limits to federal agents. This move comes following months of federal agents cutting razor wire, removing barricades, and directly aiding and abetting illegal immigration. As a reminder, last week DHS officials confirmed that over 85% of all illegals encountered at the border are not currently being deported, but instead being released into the United States.Washington D.C. – Congress voices objection to not approving airstrikes in a nation the U.S. is not at war with. Questions also remain following Pentagon statements that SECDEF Austin allegedly approved the strikes from his hospital bed.Analyst Comments: Though tensions between agencies have been common at the southern US border for years, recent developments have shifted attitudes into more of an adversarial nature. As history has proven, the impacts that state vs. federal conflict can have are often underestimated before flashpoints occur. Likewise, the use of armed soldiers by both sides presents even more opportunities for substantial mistakes to be made.Following the strikes in Yemen, the main question remains: “What happens next?”. Yemeni forces will likely repair or replace damaged facilities and equipment over the next few weeks. Calling into question the philosophical nature of an air war, it is hard to argue that even substantial targeting within a nation will be totally successful. As such, Yemen will be quick to prove that the strikes did not remove all of their combat power, and will likely increase targeting of US Navy vessels in the region. Commercial shipping companies will likely be hesitant to resume operations as one airstrike is not likely to reduce Yemeni capabilities enough for ships to become confident in transiting the Red Sea. Especially considering the Houthis are now overly motivated to carry out strikes on commercial shipping, to reaffirm their military dominance in the region.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst: S2AEND REPORTNNNN

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We discuss her running the country music 1/2 marathon in 2006 with her friend Gail who was the lady who started Gilda's gang 15 years ago. We talk about hiking, yoga, philanthropy, and how sacred the gift of life is. Danielle does a lot in her everyday life to give back and help other people and she is a great example to follow. Danielle has some of my favorite answers we have had so far on this podcast. We are both excited for the Gilda's Gang 5k that takes place on Saturday April 3rd in Shelby Park and we hope to see many of you there as well. I’m not broken, I’m not done I get up more than I’m knocked down Put myself right back the way I was found I have scars, you know I’ve sinned But they’re just souvenirs from where I’ve been The cracks just let the light come in, I’m not broken Who else feels like this is their mantra?? Maybe from a sickness or anxiety or the aftermath of 2020’s disruption and uncertainty? Maybe you’re grieving a friendship or the loss of a marriage like this week’s guest, Sarah Jane Nelson? Either way, hear us say – YOU’RE NOT BROKEN! You’re not done! Sarah Jane knows this painfully hopeful refrain all too well and the fingerprints of her own story of heartbreaking infidelity and divorce are all over her album released June of 2020, I’m Not Broken. “I had been telling other people’s stories [for a long time],” Sarah Jane tells us referring to her years of performance on Broadway, “and now I’m telling my own. And I’ve got some pretty big dreams for it.”  As a forty-year-old single mom with two kids, Sarah Jane is the picture of what grit and unwavering commitment to a dream looks like. I’m Not Broken is the result of six years of totally transparent effort to process her own pain and to “reveal the universal truths of people struggling to find hope as their fantasy falls apart.” All of our fantasies have fallen apart somewhere along the line. All of us need to remember, we’re not broken, and the cracks really are where the brightest light comes in.  The 12-track album is not to be missed and will bring life to any and every woman questioning how she’ll survive and if her story is worth telling. Spoiler alert: you will, and it is!   When the title track, “I’m Not Broken” was released, messages flooded Sarah’s inbox with women replying, thanking her, and sharing how they’ve survived their own broken stories. “Shame on all those people who said I shouldn’t sing my story…I have something to say that needs to be said, and there’s people that would like to hear it.” We all do! And finding other women out there who can stand with us and who have walked and endured the tough roads that lie ahead of us is crucial. Sarah wraps it up best:  “Admitting that I’ve gone through struggle – I don’t see that as weakness. I see that as strength.”  And we know well, we’re all stronger together. Alan:                                      00:07                     We're recording now. So anyway, just to get us started, I'm going to talk about how we met each other. I think Ted Smith introduced us a while back, didn't he?  Ican't remember now. It's been awhile. Ben:                                       00:25                     I feel like I've known you for awhile. Alan:                                      00:29                     I think maybe Ted did introduce us because I came down to your office in Shelby Park and we sat out on the balcony and it was a beautiful day and we were talking about all the amazing things that we knew that nobody else knew and if everybody else, everybody else just followed our lead. We'd be taking over the world here and we'd be blowing silicon valley or out of the water. Ben:                                       00:57                     Definitely. Yeah, definitely trying to figure out how to grow the entrepreneurial ecosystem and as many entrepreneurs in the pipeline as we can and as many investors interested in as we can. Alan:                                      01:08                     Yeah, and you guys, I'm really impressed with what you guys are doing because you're sort of checking all the boxes. I think there are so important these days which is starting a company that's leverageable from what I know, I haven't gone through exactly what you're doing, but it seems to be a very leverage-able company that you know as you continue to improve and it's just going to improve for all your customers and it's something that'll work for a million customers or 10 and if, if I understand what you're doing it, we need more of that and it's something that helps people so we can kind of get into a little bit more about that. But I just wanted to start by throwing you some praise. I think you're, it's good to see somebody building a company that I think is a more modern type company that is very leverage-able. So congratulations. Ben:                                       02:04                     I'll tell you, if I ever write a book about this experience, I'm going to title it Cliche.
