Leave an Amazon Rating or Review for my New York Times Bestselling book, Make Money Easy!Check out the full episode: https://greatness.lnk.to/1883Picture this: 2008 recession hitting hard, your business about to become another failure, and you walk into your office knowing you have to do something dramatic. Kendra Scott drew a line in the sand—literally invoked the Alamo—and asked her team if they were in or out. What came next defied every rule of the jewelry industry. While stores shuttered across Austin, she signed a lease. While everyone warned her about shoplifters, she put jewelry on open tables for customers to touch and try on freely. While traditional jewelry stores were stuffy and judgmental, she created a color bar where women could sip champagne, eat cupcakes, and watch their custom pieces being made right in front of them. People thought she was crazy. They had lines around the block. She started this company two months after 9/11 with $500 in a spare bedroom. And that 2008 recession everyone feared? She calls it "the greatest gift Kendra Scott ever got" because crisis forced her to see the blind spots in her business model and pivot before it was too late. Here's what separates the million-dollar businesses from the billion-dollar ones, and Kendra doesn't sugarcoat it. Stop pretending you're a magical unicorn who can do everything. Know exactly what you suck at, then hire people who are phenomenal at those things. Build a team that covers your gaps instead of trying to be the hero of every chapter. And here's the thing that might save your business when the next crisis hits: stop being so obsessed with the transaction that you forget the connection. Kendra's team delivered food to elderly customers during the pandemic instead of trying to sell them jewelry. Why? Because for 20 years they'd shown up in hospitals with their Kendra Cares program, in oncology centers giving women battling breast cancer something joyful, consistently being there when nobody expected them to be. That authentic connection meant when the world shut down, customers showed up for her. Not because of clever marketing, but because she'd built something real. She still reads every single Instagram comment, still works in stores, still treats customers like the actual boss—because they are. Your name might be on the building, but your customer is signing your checks. The businesses that remember that during the scary, uncomfortable phases don't just survive economic challenges—they absolutely thrive coming out the other side.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. As we gaze upon the infant Jesus during this Christmas season, let us embrace our identity as children of God. True self-knowledge combines an awareness of one's own nothingness with the confidence of being infinitely loved by God our Father. A meditation by Father Philip Moss.
Alex Honnold doesn’t climb to feel alive, he climbs because, in those moments, life finally feels simple. Today, Jay sits down with world-renowned climber Alex Honnold to explore what truly lies behind fear, focus, and extraordinary achievement. Alex shares how his relationship with fear has been shaped not by a lack of it, but by years of consistent exposure, revealing that courage isn’t about being fearless, but about learning how to listen, respond, and stay present. Jay and Alex dive into the discipline behind seemingly impossible feats: visualization, preparation, and intentional living. Alex opens up about how he mentally rehearses climbs in vivid detail, not by imagining success alone, but by walking through every sensation, risk, and possibility. This process, he explains, allows him to stay calm and grounded when it matters most. Jay draws parallels to meditation, public speaking, and everyday challenges, showing how the same principles of visualization, presence, and focus can help anyone face intimidating moments with clarity and confidence. Beyond climbing, Alex shows his other self, a husband, father, and friend who values simplicity, purpose, and service. From building a foundation that brings solar energy to communities in need to choosing joy over ego-driven success, Alex embodies a life guided by intention rather than external validation. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Build Calm by Facing Fear How to Train Your Mind Before You Act How to Stay Focused When the Stakes Are High How to Normalize Fear Instead of Fighting It How to Use Visualization for Peak Performance How to Know Your Limits Without Losing Ambition How to Build Mastery Through Consistent Practice You don’t need to chase danger or push yourself to the edge to grow. Growth happens when you prepare with intention, focus on what’s in front of you, and stop letting imagined outcomes hold you back. Watch Alex Honnold free-solo the 101-story Skyscraper, Taipei 101 live on Netflix on January 23rd. Pastor Danielle Frazer shows how Jesus upends worldly ambition by teaching that true greatness in his kingdom is found in humble service rather than seeking status.
Examining the conditions that not only blocked attempts to make America great again, but actively made the country worse, Why America Didn't Become Great Again (Routledge, 2025) identifies those organizations, institutions, politicians and prominent characters in the forefront of the economic and social policies - ultimately asking who is responsible. While the period from the late 1970s to 2020s became the best of times for America's corporate class, as profits grew along with the wealth and income that they delivered for their stockholders and management, their goal was to set new rules for the rest of us to live by, not as special interests but with a clear class agenda - for which institutions have been organized, government policies reoriented, economists, journalists and politicians recruited, funded and promoted. And so it has not been the best of times for working families as inequality, stagnant wages, debt, and ever longer working hours became their fate. This book critically analyses those who very deliberately set out to implement policies enacted at the state and federal level in order to redistribute wealth and income upwards and change the balance of power in the United States in response to the class, gender and racial challenges that resulted in compressed income and wealth differentials. An essential book on contemporary inequality in America, Why America Didn't Become Great Again surveys the past near half century that have resulted in American economic instability and inequality, environmental crisis, a crumbling physical and harmful social infrastructure, among the very worst health outcomes, child poverty, food insecurity and social mobility of the industrialized countries culminating in a Trump regime and the road to further ruin. Mike Hoss interviewed Saints executive vice president & general manager Mickey Loomis, former Panthers & Saints QB Jake Delhomme, and Saints WR Mason Tipton for the weekly "Saints Hour." Loomis explained that it takes time for good young players to become elite players. He said he doesn't see a lack of "effort" or "accountability" from the Saints' players during their six-game losing skid. Loomis also previewed the upcoming trade deadline, emphasizing that they won't trade away "half their roster" for "undervalued offers." Delhomme evaluated the Panthers' QB room of Bryce Young and Andy Dalton and discussed Carolina's extended rebuild under different leadership. Tipton praised his mentors on the Saints' roster and remembered his path to New Orleans.

In this episode of Take-Away with Sam Oches, Sam talks with Brandon Knudsen, cofounder and CEO of Ziggi's Coffee, a Colorado-based franchise that is closing in on 100 locations. Brandon started Ziggi's with his wife Camrin in 2004 after convincing her to drop out of college and move to Colorado with him to start a business. They spent 12 years experiencing all of the hardships of running a business, grinding their way to 6 locations before franchising Ziggi's. Brandon joined the podcast to talk about how that experience helps the Knudsen's excel at being franchisors and how Ziggi's is standing out in an increasingly crowded coffee category. In this conversation, you'll find out why:Hard work does not go unnoticedPartnerships aren't for everyone Some of the best ideas come when you're backed into a cornerCustomers sometimes come for the relationship, not the productEvery restaurant brand should see growth as a marathon, not a sprint Even hot markets with lots of competition have pockets of opportunity The grind of entrepreneurship is a great precursor to being a franchisor Have feedback or ideas for Take-Away? This is a warning for our culture as we are falling into a mode of far more consuming and far less creating. Two episodes ago I had business strategist and purpose expert, Mike Zeller, author of The Genius Within. A profound statement he wrote in his book, that I find to be a great challenge to us all, is this, “You don't become great by reading other people's great thoughts, shouting mantras and even surrounding yourself with great people. You have to think your own great thoughts and believe you can be great, then act in great ways.” We can fall into the trap of consuming and consuming a never ending supply of great information. It's inspiring. It's hopeful. And we will benefit to varying degrees from the exposure. But at the end of the day, if we're going to experience greatness from ourselves, we must take what we've learned and create something. Offer something. We make a decision on a value we believe we can deliver and we deliver it. We evolve from consumer to creator. From spectator to the stage. And in a way that uniquely fits you, which we also miss and I'll speak to in just a moment. Consumer vs creator Hey, got a comment or question about an episode?
