Rachel Cooper is a violin teacher who was recently awarded the Emerging Artist Award given by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at the 2023 Women in Classical Music Symposium. She's a Suzuki teacher, a violin and chamber music coach at Junior Guildhall and works for Nicola Benedetti's education initiative, the Benedetti Foundation. As part of her award and her continuing professional development, Rachel is planning to put her teaching approaches into a book, to help inspire music teachers to inject a little bit of magic into their lessons. What's so distinctive about Rachel's teaching? Rachel speaks to online editor Davina about the concept of ‘3D learning' and creative teaching – emphasising an all-round approach to music, including how something feels and sounds – not just how something looks – to embed information in a way that students understand and ultimately unlock students' progress. She speaks about how tailoring her teaching methods to students gives you skills to become a better and more effective teacher.  Check out thestrad.com for the latest news, articles and reviews on all things to do with string playing. Sara Mohr-Pietsch talks to violinist Nicola Benedetti as she prepares for her inaugural programme as Edinburgh International Festival director, becoming the first Scot to hold the position in the festival's 75-year history. Nicola discusses the challenges of balancing the festival job with life as a performer and sets out her vision for opening up music to a wider audience and deepening the culture of listening. We visit English National Opera to find out about a new staging of Henryk Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, 30 years after the first commercial recording of the piece shot to fame reaching number six in the UK pop album charts. Sara talks to Russian-American conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya and director/designer Isabella Bywater about their new production of the piece and how the operatic setting changes our experience of the music. Baritone Lucia Lucas and composer Tom W Green discuss The World's Wife - a chamber opera from 2017 for string quartet and singer which uses text from the poetry collection by Carol Ann Duffy, who presents world history through the eyes of the wives and partners of the men in the history books. They talk to Sara about the use of material by historic women composers, the power of the poetry, and what it means to rework the piece with a transgender opera singer in 2023. And with stories in the media of a sector in decline, we look at what the numbers tell us about the state of classical music in the UK, with contributions from Anne Torreggiani at The Audience Agency on concert-going, Janis Susskind at Boosey and Hawkes on commissioning and audiences, and Dr Adam Whittaker at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on uptake of A-levels and grade exams.

Violinist Nicola Benedetti reveals her most important cultural influences and experiences that have inspired her to become one of the world's greatest classical musicians. Having taken up the violin at the age of four, Nicola won the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition at 16. She's renowned for the passion of her live concerts, her recordings of the great violin concertos, and for her work with contemporary composers, including a Grammy-winning collaboration with composer Wynton Marsalis. She's also deeply involved in educational programmes that use classical music to transform the lives of young people. For This Cultural Life, Nicola Benedetti recalls her North Ayrshire upbringing and how her Italian parents encouraged her musicality from a young age. She remembers first listening to Brahms's Violin Concerto on the car journey to school, a piece that inspired her to seriously pursue her ambitions, becoming the leader of the National Children's Orchestra at the age of just eight. She discusses the influence of the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin, whose school she attended until she was 15, and at whose funeral she performed in 1999. Nicola also talks about her work with the Sistema Scotland project, and her own Benedetti Foundation, which promotes musical education. Determined to promote contemporary classical music as well as the traditional repertoire, she discusses her work with Wynton Marsalis and the young British composer Mark Simpson, both of whom have written violin concertos for her. In her journey as a human being and an artist, themes of interest emerged, culminating in her meeting with the artist Daniela Marcozzi and the violinist and founder of Mindful Music Making, Alina Pogostkina. These two meetings inspired Cecilia to conceive her personal project: The Lab of Joy. A laboratory, in fact, that researches and develops means of expression that are aimed at the unfolding qualities of one's human expression and soul. Katie Derham explores how music education for children can be Just The Tonic. She finds out from Nicola Benedetti how music-making can help young people learn all sorts of life skills. Nicola has long been a champion of making music lessons widely available and, through her Benedetti Foundation, provided a lifeline for young musicians during the pandemic. The enormous benefits of giving children a good music education are well-recognised. Neavan Lobban, twenty-two-year-old principal conductor with The People's Orchestra attended a state school that specialised in music education. He firmly believes that instrumental lessons should be provided free of charge. Sistema Scotland's Big Noise projects have been helping young people in deprived communities in Scotland for a number of years, providing music lessons at no cost. Based on the renowned El Sistema system in Venezuela, their motto is social change through music. Senior musician Jo Ashcroft has worked at the Big Noise project in Raploch, Stirling for many years and she's seen first-hand how children who attend music lessons regularly do better at school. Symone and Scott Hutchison are living proof! They've been attending Big Noise lessons since primary school and now they're on course for a career in music. There are many ways in which making music can have a lasting impact on young people's lives. Find out more when Katie meets inspirational music educators in this week's Just The Tonic. “The possibility for you as a listener is to open yourself up enough be taken somewhere that seems far from you.” Nicola Benedetti tells us how as a 10-year-old she first heard the second movement of Beethoven's Violin Concerto, and without knowing what “this thing from heaven” was, the sound resonated with her in a way she couldn't quite yet understand.  Over 20 years later, having played it in concert halls around the world, she reflects on the concerto's ability to capture the full range of human emotion that can connect to any listener. Nicola Benedetti is a violinist and music educator. She recently appeared as a soloist at the BBC Proms and with at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music performing Wynton Marsalis' first Violin Concerto. Did you like the track Nicola chose? There are so many great ideas and concepts that these amazing musicians bring up and I would like to share with you some of my favourites! This is great for beginner jazz violinists who want a little direction once in a while. Nicola Benedetti Nicola Benedetti is one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation. Her ability to captivate audiences with her innate musicianship and dynamic presence, coupled with her wide appeal as a high-profile advocate for classical music, has made her one of the most influential classical artists of today. She has been collaborating with jazz musician Wynton Marsalis for a number of years but has just brought out her first release playing all of his music, written especially by him for her. It includes his Violin Concerto plus his 'Fiddle Dance Suite', the album is out now on Decca Records. We had a little chat in a hotel lobby in central London about the collaborative process that created this amazing album of music. (the sound quality isn't amazing this time, I get a little nervous when recording in hotel lobbies as hotels don't always appreciate me doing so. This means I have to record on the 'down-low and just use a little portable recorder...) Gareth Ballard Check out Gareths amazing workshop via the link below. He makes lovely violins and is a talented repair and restorer of violins. He is great with set ups and sound adjustments. http://violinslondon.co.uk/ The music at the beginning ofd the episode is Nicola playing Wyntons Fiddle dance suite for violin (Jones' Jig) The outro music is my band Latchepen playing Benny Golson's 'Whisper Not' I feature Austrailan violinist Julian Ferraretto tune 'Basel' right at the end.

Nicola is one of the most sought-after violinists of her generation.  She is one of the most influential classical artists in the world and has played with the finest orchestras and symphonies from around the globe. She was the BBC Young Musician of the Year at age 16, twice the Female Artist of the Year at the classical BRIT awards and has sold millions of records.   Some interesting insights from this episode:  As early as the age of 5, she was so emotionally moved by music that she would often be brought to tears while playing.  It's important to focus early on in life. Once you learn to push through certain barriers, you can apply that discipline to other areas in which you choose to devote your life.  She never had any long term goals of becoming a world class violinist but rather, was always hyper focused on just improving one day at a time.  Beyond her technical mastery, she had a natural stage presence which enabled her to take her talent to the next level.  When she performs she enters the “flow state” whereby she becomes so engrossed in playing that she's no longer thinking but rather, enters a period of emotional timelessness.  Learn how she was able to top not only the classical charts but the Top 30 Pop Album charts as well.  Excellence isn't just about the discipline, dedication and relentless work ethic but also about being immensely curious about the larger philosophical questions outside of their areas of expertise.

This was simple music, played on homemade instruments by teenagers - punk before punk. But many skiffle players went on to great things - members of The Beatles, for instance.
