This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Anna Bower and Eric Columbus, and his Brookings colleague Molly Reynolds, to talk through a couple of the week's big news stories in domestic politics, including:“The Grift That Keeps On Giving.” Last week, the Justice Department announced the creation of a so-called Anti-Weaponization Fund of nearly 1.8 billion taxpayer dollars, from which purported victims of politically motivated prosecutions can apply to receive payments. The fund was created as part of a settlement with President Trump and his sons, who sued the IRS for 10 billion dollars over the leak of his tax returns. So far, pardoned Jan. 6 rioters, former Congressman George Santos, Trump's ex attorney Michael Cohen, and even former FBI Director James Comey have all said that they are considering applying, and three lawsuits have already been filed challenging the fund. How did Trump's lawsuit against the IRS lead to this fund? And how do we see these legal challenges playing out in court?“Lame Duck Around and Find Out.” President Trump's preferred primary picks have cruised to victories in Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Georgia Republican primaries, ousting incumbents Senator Bill Cassidy and Representative Thomas Massie as some of the few voices of dissent within the Republican Party. But Trump's involvement in the primaries has come at a political cost, with outgoing members voicing their criticism and even going so far as to buck the president on legislation. Last week, Cassidy flipped his vote in favor of a critical war powers resolution in the Senate, which could undermine the administration's legal justification for the war. With such close margins in Congress, how do we expect this new YOLO faction to impact the president's agenda before the midterms? While we introduced a third topic, we frankly ran out of time this week. Sorry about that! We'll circle back to it in the weeks ahead. In object lessons, Molly is hooked on the fish-focused local NPR podcast, “Catching The Codfather.” Eric is looking to catch a killer with the latest Hugh Jackman movie (which he thinks is shear perfection). Scott is caught up in the latest “Storm,” featuring Yung Lean. And Anna has caught basketball fever, both with the Knicks' return to the NBA Finals, and also with the (much-more-affordable-but-equally-entertaining) NY Liberty. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Was Dave Macklovitch right about the Hedi Boy revival? Is Hedi Slimane's skinny-jeans-and-leather-jacket universe bigger than fashion? And what happens to musicians when AI can make the record but not the room?Sol and Michael sit down with the podcast's favorite well-dressed unc, Dave Macklovitch of Chromeo, for his second episode and a proper apology tour after the 2025 Hedi Slimane craze proved him right. The trio explore the Hedi Boy phenomenon, Celine skinny jeans, Dior Homme codes, Saint Laurent leather jackets, indie sleaze, Grailed resellers, archive fashion, and why the looks that last are never just clothes—they come with music, photography, nightlife, diet, attitude, community, and a whole lifestyle system.Further, Dave connects that idea to Chromeo, explaining how the band built an 80s funk world through contrast rather than costume, why charisma still matters in the age of Suno AI and AI-generated music, and how the “human avatar” may become even more important as the back end gets automated. They also discuss Kid Cudi's “Day 'N' Nite,” Fool's Gold Records, the birth of modern emo rap, Lil Peep, Yung Lean, Clams Casino, Lil Uzi Vert, Geese, DJ Sneak, Daft Punk, Radiohead, Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, and the strange grace we give artists after their best albums. On the fashion side, they talk Aimé Leon Dore as integrated fashion, Supreme and Dior Homme coffee machines, Rick Owens lifers, Tom Ford's symbolic universe, Haider Ackermann, Berluti cowboy boots, Soshiotsuki, Anthony Vaccarello, Demna at Gucci, Kozaburo, how to interact with Thom Browne on a budget, Balmain by Christophe Decarnin, moto denim, Saint Laurent patina, eBay archive finds, vintage Abercrombie, CDLP, DEVOA, Issey Miyake, and why brands that sell a world—not just a garment—keep winning. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did.Questions answered in this episode:- Why is Hedi Slimane influential?- What is a Hedi Boy?- Are skinny jeans coming back?- Why are Celine skinny jeans popular again?- What is integrated fashion?- Why do fashion brands sell lifestyle now?- What makes a brand universe successful?- How do music and fashion influence each other?- Why do Supreme, CELINE, Dior Homme, Saint Laurent, Rick Owens, and Tom Ford create such strong cultural identities?- How will AI music change musicians?- Will AI replace artists?- Why does charisma matter in live performance?- Why was Kid Cudi's “Day 'n' Nite” important?- Why is A$AP Rocky considered a fashion artist?- What makes archive fashion valuable?- How do Grailed, eBay, and Discogs shape taste?- What brands are exciting right now? Gut so, findet Claudia Christophersen.

Hello my friends and welcome to what will prove to serve as the newest installment uploaded by your favorite disc jockey on the internet. I am a deeply devastated daddy after Virginia Commonwealth University managed to upset my TarHeels in overtime. Not to mention my love life is boring me to tears. I see comments about the potential firing of Hubert Davis and to that I say shame on you. Wash your tongue with vinegar and go dig a hole somewhere. It's Hubert Davis around here foo. I could spill into the multiple reasons for my concrete stance but I won't give you that beating right now. It's FINE. My favorite portion of this episode would either be the cold slow and throw switch on the Nas 45, Boylife in EU by Yung Lean always makes me happy and honestly I believe Eternal Sunshine by Jay Electronica might be the best rap verse ever written. That's just me. Thank you as always for being here, I hope someone out there liked it. WHAT'S GOOD WITH YOU KEISHA?? Enjoy your weekend, I bought Holes on DVD today so I'll definitely be enjoying mine. Your Host with the Most,Juan Don

Swedish pop star Robyn emerged as a phenomenon in the mid 1990s, an ingenue whose work with Max Martin presaged the R&B crossover hits of acts like Britney and the Backstreet Boys. Since her debut, she's released a string of albums that have shaped the sound of dance music as we know it. Now, Robyn is releasing her first new album in eight years, Sexistential, and she's given us three singles made up of her signature combination of thumping bass and ethereal vocals, while innovating into new personal –and vulnerable — territory. With raps about IVF, references to Blondie, a return to her collaboration with Max Martin, and our introduction of “drum n grace” to the lexicon, this episode is manna for Robyn fans and tyros alike. Stick around as we unveil a new feature, “Quick Hits,” a down-and-dirty carousel ride through the most interesting new releases, from ASAP Rocky to Zach Bryan. Titled after the Kendrick Lamar feature in the latter portion of the installment, welcome to I'm Dying of Thirst. The newest episode curated by your favorite internet disc jockey, DJ Witwickatron. A hip-hip majority installment starting in the 90's and ending at current features. I do love the Jai Paul demo soundcloud playlist, but outside of that? My favorite portions of this episode would be Wu-Tang's Black Diamonds, Beastie Boys live on David Letterman, Paul Wall Sittin' Sideways on vinyl and the Jay Electronica run featuring the closing stanza of Eternal Sunshine. Boylife in EU by Yung Lean makes me smile as well. I really ended up enjoying this episode, I hope you did the same. In other unrelated news, just yesterday I was lucky enough to give a really nice, beautiful lady a bouquet of roses for the first time in my life. Peachy, dusty pink roses that I spent time picking out, found a vase at a separate fancy location and really enjoyed the whole process. No reason in relaying this message to my internet populous other than to let you know that DJ Witwicky is out here balling out of control in real life. Thank you, as always, for being here. I'll be byck with another handful of game next weekend.Polka King of the Midwest,DJ Witwicky

On this episode, Marc talks with Donna-Claire Chesman. She's the author of “Crybaby: The Artists Who Shaped Emo Rap,” published on January 21, 2025. It's a fascinating look at a genre that grew up from the Soundcloud underground to become wildly popular, focusing on artists like Atmosphere, Lil Peep, Yung Lean, and Juice WRLD. “Crybaby” does justice to a musical subculture that's more complex and rewarding than you might realize. As Donna-Claire writes, “The history of Emo Rap is imperfect, and in many ways, 'Crybaby' is an imperfect reconstruction and critical examination of a genre that is felt more than articulated…at one point I toyed with the idea of asking my interview subjects who emo rap “was for,” except I quickly understood that emo rap is for everyone.” To buy "Crybaby" and support independent bookstores, go here: https://bookshop.org/p/books/crybaby-the-artists-who-shaped-emo-rap-donna-claire-chesman/21650174We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Donna-Claire Chesman!

Send us your thoughts! Swedish jazz virtuoso Ebba Åsman has announced the forthcoming release of her third full-length record When You Know. The new album arrives March 21st, 2025 via Dorado Records.Coinciding with the announcement of ‘When You Know' of the upcoming album are the joint first singles - the title track ‘When You Know' and ‘No Answer'. The pair of songs channel the feelings that came into clarity for Åsman during her time in the woods: the stresses of not knowing where you're headed, sensing that you're losing grip of the life you've built, drowning in the infinite questions that swirl around in your head – and ultimately, accepting the uncertainty of it all. The latter track has been described as the turning point of the album, where acceptance of the circumstances begin to prevail.Coming off of a Swedish Grammy (GRAMMIS) nomination for her 2023 sophomore album ‘Be Free', live showings at North Sea Jazz Festival and London's Ronnie Scott's and an appointment as one of Yamaha's brand ambassadors, the trombonist, songwriter and producer sought to quiet the noise around her and challenge the jazz genre's rigid rules for her next project. The end result is ‘When You Know'; a smoky and melancholic 10-track cocktail of jazz, alternative R&B, indie, Hip-Hop and ambient sonics that experiments at every turn. On hand to co-produce the record and provide the electronic elements that move ‘When You Know' away from the jazz world and into more avant-garde territory, Ebba collaborated with Berlin-based producer Lucy Liebe. Packing a potent emotional punch into a running time of just 31 minutes, the 10 tracks are a reflection of Ebba herself: direct, driven, precise. Retreating to a cabin outside of her small hometown of Hammarö, 200 miles west of Stockholm, she recorded the album in the dead of winter. With the temperatures outside nearing minus-thirty degrees, Åsman logged off for a month – disconnecting from TV, social media and emails. Embracing with vigour both the deep sense of calm and the challenges that come with the cold but also the stillness and solitude that is yielded being in the wilderness.Though this is Åsman's third studio album, it will be the first time she's singing on record. An important statement and moment of transition for Ebba. Elaborating on this further she said: “If you're singing, you are the closest you can be to your own expression but I wanted to first be respected as an instrumentalist. If you're a woman and you tell people you're a musician, everyone assumes and says “Oh – so you're a singer?”. ‘When You Know' will mark the moment on which Ebba Åsman's exceptional gifts are finally crystallised. At age 7, she began learning trombone and by 15, she won a place to study the instrument at the Södra Latin School in Stockholm. The renowned hot-house for Swedish talent whose alumni include Lykke Li, Yung Lean and the prolific hit songwriter Max Martin. But when she moved to the Netherlands to study at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, she began to push against the constraints of formal learning. Self-identifying as a “jazz rebel”, rather than being preoccupied with the theoretical and mechanical aspects of jazz, Ebba operates from a mode of pure intuition and feeling. At just 26, ‘When You Know' finds Åsman continuing to push the boundaries of jazz through the two distinct sides of her musical self: the notes she conjures from the trombone and now, her voice.Support the show

Byck to kick off the new year with a few bing bongs. Your favorite internet disc jockey, the Virtual Virtuoso returns with some new heat. Found an original '72 Hendrix album from the UK along with a few others not featured on this episode. My favorite portion of this episode would be the Yung Lean live performances, the truck performance in particular is worth the watch. So over the top creative. Hope someone out there enjoys the episode, I'll be back new week for another bing bong. Thank you, as always, for being a fantastic listening audience.Your Host with the Most,Virtual Virtuoso

Completely abandoning rhyme or reason as I do what I want, wicked Witwicky style. A couple of slowed reverb renditions in there, I even get fired up as a middle aged man and sing a couple bars of Boylife in EU by Yung Lean. Didn't have that on my checklist of things to do this year but glad that it happened anyway. In other random news, last week on IG I saw that an old best friend of mine from high school was playing a gig in a band. This guy was a roommate of mine we had so many laughs and did the coolest stuff, I haven't seen him in years. I checked and the venue was 20 minutes from my place so I just showed up. Didn't tell him beforehand and he saw me from the stage. Biggest cheese on this guy's face when he knew it was me. Buddy killed it playing some Tony Iommi style metal lead and it was great, I'm glad I crawled out of my shell and actually showed up. Holy moly what an ear beating what am I a novelist now? My fingers hurt and I have football to watch. My fantasy team is due to keel over and take a swan dive at any moment. As always, thank you for being here.. Hope someone enjoys itYour Host with the Most,DJ Witwicky

This week's interview with musical artist and host Franklin Jonas ain't no bonus. Franklin was kind enough to wear an entire rat mascot costume to a Brooklyn firing squad on his Wiki Feet score, stretchy nipples, getting his Rollie finessed in Ibiza, his unbridled commitment to the rat suit bit, not crossing the picket line to throw Tom Hanks under the bus, losing your mind over just being in the same room as A$AP Ferg, another week of Yung Lean being the source, going funcle mode with this undisclosed number of nieces and nephews, whether or not he will publicly declare himself the lowkey coolest JoBro, the Bonus Jonas chip on your shoulder to purposely ending your shows on a depressing ass note pipeline, making music in NYC vs. LA, cocaine capping, becoming a Jack Daniel's man, his vape of choice, Disney Channel kids blossoming into Disney adults, comic book nerdom, fake rumors about his family and learning about his brother Joe shitting his pants on stage in real time, what's the Jonas family group chat hitting for, his very famous and very cool sister-in-laws, Swiftie love, hitting rock-bottom by using his last name in a pathetic attempt to get laid in college, his boss Diplo, what the hell Pizza Slime actually is, pulling up to the red carpet with the god Hayao Miyazaki, inventing a new love language with wifey and much more on this mature and magical episode of The Only Podcast That Matters™.
