It's a battle of the cellar dwellers this afternoon in Auckland when the Northern Stars host the Southern Steel in netball's ANZ Premiership. It's pretty much a must-win for both sides, if they're to make the post-season. The Steel, who've won two games from eight attempts, are second-bottom but surprisingly have the same points as the winless, dead-last Stars. Both teams need the points if they're to close the gap on the top-three playoff places with six rounds to go, but are well behind the fourth-placed Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic. Emma Thompson out of the Northern Stars joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Stars are in must-win mode against the Magic as they search for their first win of the ANZ Premiership netball season. After two rounds the Auckland side sit fourth on a points difference, having lost their opening two games to the Pulse and Tactix by much closer margins. But coach Kiri Wills says the Magic are also in must-win mode, and they're expecting the Magic to come out firing. Northern Stars defender Holy Fowler joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash. Tactix coach Marianne Delaney-Hoshek's wary of a player being sent off in the coming rounds of the ANZ Premiership. Four players were given a two minute "stand down" for dangerous play across the opening three matches of the competition. Should that player return and then commit a second offence, they're out for the match and the team is down a player for four minutes. The Tactix host the Stars in Christchurch, centre pass is at 4pm Sunday afternoon. Northern Stars defender Kate Burley joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash. The 2021 ANZ netball premiership season got underway last night, and it looks like it could be a tight battle for the title, with last year's finalists both losing their opening games. Central Pulse were beaten 57-53 by the Auckland-based Northern Stars in Palmerston North, while Canterbury's Mainland Tactix were upset 54-36 by the Southland Steel in Invercargill. Former New Zealand netball coach and Silver Ferns player Yvonne Willering spoke to Corin Dann.
Is 2021 the year the Mainland Tactix finally get to lift netball’s ANZ Premiership trophy? This week on RNZ’s Extra Time, Bridget Tunnicliffe puts the question to LockerRoom's Suzanne McFadden, Stuff's Brendan Egan, and former Silver Fern Katrina Rore. We discuss whether off-season signings at the Northern Stars have put them in with a shot and how will the defending champion Pulse go after a number of changes to the side. Also, what impact will Australian Diamonds shooter Caitlin Bassett have at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic? Later we look at the long-awaited inclusion of Pacific Island teams in Super Rugby and we hear from a leading psychologist about New Zealand's top athletes seeking psychological support in record numbers.

Another one of New Zealand's most high-profile national sports captains is taking a break due to fatigue.Silver Ferns captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio will miss the start of the national netball premiership because she's exhausted. It comes after White Ferns skipper Sophie Devine sat out the second and third Twenty20 cricket internationals against Australia and the three one-dayers that followed as she was suffering from fatigue.Ekenasio missed last month's pre-season tournament in Ōtaki to freshen up following the Silver Ferns' Constellation Cup victory and Pulse CEO Fran Scholey says she remains on "extended medical leave"."She is exhausted and just needs to reset," Scholey said."It's been an incredible 18 months for her and so she just needs to reset herself."Scholey met with Ekenasio this week, but she hasn't been training with the Pulse in the lead-up to Sunday's season opener against the Northern Stars in Palmerston North. And it remains to be seen when the two-time defending champions will be able to call on their goal attack and captain."With any athlete obviously we're mindful of looking after their health and wellbeing so we need to make sure when she returns she's in a return to play programme," Scholey said."Our key thing around our kaupapa (policy) is that we ensure our athletes are mentally well in terms of their home life first and foremost so that when they're able to perform at work they're at the best of their abilities. So until we get any indication that that is all okay then she won't be returning to the environment."Ekenasio hopes to play some part in the competition."That's exactly where she wants to be. I don't think any athlete doesn't want to not be performing at their best and in their job that they love," Scholey said."Obviously from a Pulse perspective she's an incredible leader within our team so we want her to be at her best when she's returning."We are taking all of the considerations and indications from her when she's ready and able to do that and so we're supporting her through that process."In Ekenasio's absence Silver Ferns mid-courter Claire Kersten will captain the Pulse."Claire's fantastic. She's got incredible experience, she's been around the Pulse environment for a long time now and obviously she was back in with the Silver Ferns which was fantastic for her."The main thing is we need to have a leader that is present at this time to set our team up for success and Ameliaranne is 100% supportive of that as well."text by Brenton Vannisselroy of RNZ

Northern Stars coach Kiri Wills joined us to discuss how she was able to bring Anna Harrison out of retirement to play in next year's ANZ Premiership and a range of netball issues.
The ANZ Premiership grand final will go ahead next Sunday – but without fans in attendance.Netball New Zealand has confirmed the Central Pulse and Mainland Tactix will meet in the final in Invercargill, but the consolation matches will not be held, with the third-place playoff between the Northern Mystics and Northern Stars, and the fifth-place playoff between the Southern Steel and Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic both cancelled.Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie said the decision to continue with the grand final was determined by the Government's announcement on Friday with the country's alert levels remaining the same, with Auckland currently at Level 3 and the rest of the country at Level 2."Our team has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes to give us the opportunity to play the grand final in an environment that safely meets the guidelines from the Ministry," she said."We're pleased that we are still able to showcase the pinnacle match of the ANZ Premiership during a season that has tossed up so many challenges for players, management, fans and officials."Netball NZ are hopeful that the Steel can play a curtain-raiser ahead of the grand final, but with no local fans allowed to attend, the planned bumper finals series may instead be set for an eerie conclusion.Wyllie says they will continue to monitor the guidance from the Ministry of Health and Government to ensure the match remains safe to go ahead."We feel confident in moving forward with the grand final but will be closely following the advice from officials," she said. The grand final is set to begin at 6.45pm next Sunday.

In today’s podcast we speak to netball star, Courtney Tairi.Courtney’s career started off in NSW at the Swifts where she then travelled over to NZ to play for the Steel, Magic & Northern Stars over her career as well as international team, Silver Ferns.Courtney started netball at the age of 7 as her older sister played. As well as netball Court also played in athletics and touch.Courtney’s move to NZ was a hard decision she had to make, however thought it would be best she represented her family and her blood whilst making the most of this opportunity.Courtney had an injury where her achilles snapped. This didn’t hold Courtney back, having previous 2 major injuries she knew she could come back from this.As an athlete it is important to challenge yourself; see how far you can push it and get. This is important as an athlete, as a player but also just as important to do in everyday life.Courtney definitely does this as now a retired athlete, hosts TV shows and MCs sports. She had no training at all heading into this and for her was a sink or swim situation.

In Extra Time this week - the Cricket World Cup is finally underway and England have underlined their credentials as tournament favourites with a comprehensive win over South Africa in the opening match. The Black Caps campaign opens up in Cardiff on Saturday night against Sri Lanka - we discuss what's in store for them and whether we've gleaned anything from the tournament opener as to how the competition will unfold. We also hear from Black Caps coach Mike Hesson. We also discuss the ANZ Netball Premiership final between the Pulse and the Northern Stars - will the South Auckland side have anything left in the tank for Monday night's finale?
Northern Stars 56Southern Steel 53Delivering when it mattered most, the Northern Stars have advanced to the ANZ Premiership grand final after upsetting defending champions Southern Steel 56-53 in the elimination final in Invercargill on Wednesday. The Stars will meet the Pulse to decide the ANZ premiership title in Porirua on Monday.Getting their noses in front just ahead of halftime, a determined Stars turned around a 17-goal deficit from when the teams met just a week ago while also becoming the first team to break the Steel's 16-game winning streak on their home court at ILT Stadium during the past three seasons.Shooter Maia Wilson was a commanding presence under the Stars hoop with an impressive all-round game backed up by converting 43 goals from 45 attempts in helping end the Steel's two-year reign as title winners. The result has also prolonged the careers of veteran Stars players Temepara Bailey and Leana de Bruin who will both retire at the end of the season. The Steel retained their tried and true starting line-up while the Stars opted for import shooter Charlee Hodges at goal attack and Kayla Cullen at wing defence to open the game.Fittingly for the status of the match, the lead changed hands several times in an absorbing first quarter. The home side imposed themselves early when forging a 5-1 lead in the opening three minutes but once in the groove, the Stars made sure of an even contest.Tightening their through-court defence provided turnover opportunities for the visitors which they made the most off to nudge into the lead, the scoreline going back and forth during the latter stages of the quarter.Anchoring their respective ends, shooters Lenize Potgieter and Wilson were key figures in posting perfect first quarters where the Steel took a narrow 15-14 lead.It was a similar formula on the resumption with Stars defenders de Bruin and Storm Purvis turning up the heat. Rising young Steel midcourter Kate Heffernan provided the same impetus for her team. Both teams were forced to play short, sharp attacking games at times to negate the defensive prowess of both sides. The Steel broke the shackles to forge a handy six-goal advantage with the timing of Potgieter under the home team's hoop proving influential.A three-goal run helped the Stars pull back the Steel's lead to a 30-27 advantage at the main break. With Bailey moving to wing attack and Holly Fowler coming off the bench and into centre for the second half, the Stars scored the first three goals of the third stanza to get back on level terms. The Stars defensive unit continued to apply the blowtorch with the relentless efforts of de Bruin and Purvis paying dividends. With the pressure building all the time, the Steel found it more difficult to contain the growing confidence from their opponents. In an increasingly tight and tense encounter, it was the Stars who turned the game on its head when matching the Steel goal-for-goal before a rock-solid Wilson pushed the visitors out to a 43-41 lead at the last turn.

What's the first thing you think of when you hear “Toronto sound”? I'm willing to bet Drake or The Weeknd instinctively come to mind. What many don't know is that Toronto's music scene is complex and varies on a spectrum that goes beyond the dark, moody sound that often characterizes the city. Take for instance singer-songwriter and producer a l l i e, her style in music goes beyond the typical dark-moody sound that Toronto is known for. Her sound involves a lot of groove and funk undertones, something she calls “a mash-up of analog and digital”. a l l i e isn't the only star rising in Toronto's alternative scene, artists like M.I. Blue, Clairmont the Second, and 2nd Son are also changing what is known as “Toronto sound.” In this episode of The Come Up Show we present our very first audio documentary presented by Soundcloud. We talk to artists from Toronto who contribute a unique and alternative sound to the city, share their perspective on being an artist in Toronto, and discuss whether or not the musical renaissance is changing things for the better. Thanks to stars like Drake and The Weeknd, Toronto has climbed the ranks of musical hotspots and is now able to bring our talented artists to light. Each and every Wednesday we'll be uploading a brand new interview with a guest we feel that you should know about.
