Gluten is a storage protein found in many foods, though mainly wheat, barley, and rye. It is a binder that helps food hold its shape. The human body is incapable of digesting and breaking gluten down. This can cause a host of immune reactions and lead to many chronic health conditions. Unfortunately, the prevalence of Celiac disease, wheat allergies, and non-Celiac gluten sensitivity is on the rise. Dr. Tom O'Bryan is one of the leading experts in functional medicine as it relates to gluten and autoimmunity. His work on wheat-related disorders, environmental toxicity, and autoimmunity is internationally recognized. In today's episode, we discuss the devastating impact of gluten, environmental toxins, and autoimmune disease with the expert on these topics, Dr. Tom O'Bryan. And if you want to listen to more, tune in to the original episode.Dr. Thomas O'Bryan takes the No. 7 spot with: The Autoimmune Fix – Dr. Thomas O'Bryan – #478In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Dr. Thomas O'Bryan says seven out of every 10 patients he treats have autoimmune issues. He's a physician internationally renowned for his work with autoimmune diseases and inflammation, and the nutrition and lifestyle choices that can help. With a healthy immune system, your antibodies have the power to get rid of old and damaged cells and make room for new cells to grow and develop. But with any kind of autoimmunity issue, your antibodies end up killing off more cells than you make. Autoimmunity can be triggered for a long time before you feel the impacts. It tends to hit your body at some point, so the sooner you can find a way to prevent it, the better. Dr. O'Bryan talks about the causes, the signs and what you can do about it, to prevent things like leaky gut and encourage things like healthy enzymes. He says it's most often about what you eat, what's going up your nostrils and what's happening inside your gut. More from Dr. Thomas O'Bryan:“This topic of autoimmunity really becomes a primary concern for all of us, but we've never looked at it that way. So once we understand this, that this is prevalent in almost all of us, that it's an autoimmune mechanism, meaning your immune system attacking your own tissue, whether it's your blood vessels, or components in your blood vessels, the fatty membranes of the blood vessels, or it's your brain, or your joints, or whatever it is, when your immune system is attacking your own tissue, that goes on for years. It's called the spectrum of autoimmunity.” “Celiac disease is when your gut's being chewed up from a sensitivity to wheat. The third category is non celiac wheat sensitivity, and that's the big kahuna picture. Non-celiac wheat sensitivity can manifest as brain dysfunction, autoimmune brain disease, skin disease, joint disease. There's no tissue in the body that might notbe affected by a sensitivity to wheat. Look at the immune system to see. Is my immune system telling me I've got a problem with this food? Because body language never lies. If your immune system is activated to protect you against a particular food, stop eating that food.” “If you treat your body like a Lamborghini, it's going to run like a Lamborghini. If you treat your body like a Rambler and expect it to run like a Lamborghini, you're going to be in trouble.” Enjoy! Dr. Tom O'Bryan is a recognized world expert on gluten and its impact on health. He holds five different positions at Harvard studying the role of gluten in overall health. His work has garnered him international recognition and he's a highly sought after speaker on all things gluten. He joins me today to chat about the dangers of gluten, how it affects overall health, and the role of the gut in various autoimmune disorders. It's amazing to hear him break down complex body processes in an easy to understand way that really drives home the need for ongoing education. For instance, he notes that our bodies are almost exactly the same at a cellular level as the bodies of our hunter gatherer forefathers. When they would gather food, they trusted their senses of smell and taste to determine if the food they found was still good. If for some reason the food was spoiled or harbored a bacteria that the acid in their stomachs couldn't kill, the body would fire an immune response. This is the basis for leaky gut. In ideal conditions, the leaky gut is meant as a protective response. Nowadays however, we are overloading our system and constantly exposing our gut to gluten. Gluten has a very similar protein map to that of bad bugs in food. This means that our gut is constantly fighting against the “bug” that is gluten which leads to chronic leaky gut. Like I said, this is truly fascinating. Listen as he shares ways you can start to turn the tables and start living a more healthful life. Everything from how to structure your diet to ways of empowering your mind. Dedicate just 1 hour each week to living a healthier life and you'll be amazed at the differences you see. In This Episode: [00:00:17] Welcome Dr. Tom O'Bryan to chat about gluten and overall health. [00:01:37] Why is gluten such a problem and how is it affecting our health? [00:03:39] Learn the two triggers of leaky gut and why gluten is not bad for you. Bad gluten is bad for you. [00:06:12] Gluten activates intestinal permeability in all human beings. Learn more. [00:11:36] What should the average person be looking out for with regard to gluten and gluten reactions? [00:14:20] Leaky gut is actually meant to be a benefit to the body by removing harmful bacteria. [00:16:02] Gluten has the same protein structure as bad bugs which is why the body fights it. The repeated ingestion of gluten laden products is what causes intestinal distress. [00:21:05] What should you do now that you know more about the relationship between gluten and gut health? [00:24:37] Phthalates are accumulative. Years of exposure compound to create huge health issues both in your body and that of your offspring. [00:30:47] Dr. O'Bryan shares his thoughts on the good vs bad vs ugly with regard to gluten in food. [00:34:47] How your cellular regeneration is impacted by your lifestyle and the food you eat. [00:40:10] What does he advise people with regard to gluten and what is safe and not safe? [00:44:08] 36% of all the molecules in your bloodstream are the exhaust from your gut. [00:48:40] Are there any carbs that are okay or should we avoid them completely? [00:52:09] How using vegetables and functional medicine helped one of his colleagues reverse MS. [00:56:19] Ways to determine if you're suffering from inflammation due to gluten responses. [01:00:01] Connect with Dr. O'Bryan if you are experiencing symptoms but unable to find the cause. Both Elizabeth and Timothy were too excited for bed, so Ronald promised that if they got into their pyjamas, and went straight to bed afterwards, then they could have one piece of candy tonight. Timothy sifted through all of his candy, before settling on his giant pixy styx. He opened it up, and took a huge gulp of sherberty powder, but after swallowing it, noticed it didn't taste very nice. He took a sip of Kool-Aid to help wash it down and ate a little more, but just moments later, he began to vomit. He fell to the floor, and went into convulsions. Ronald immediately called emergency services when he realised that the safe streets of the friendly Surburban neighbourhood, lit by orange pumpkins and pretend evil ghouls and ghosts, had been infiltrated by a different kind of horror. Something more evil than they could ever have imagined. SOURCES: https://www.nytimes.com/1975/05/29/archives/wife-a-takes-stand-at-husbands-trial-in-sons-poisoning.html
In 1974 Ronald O'Bryan perhaps starts a decade long paranoia by tampering with Halloween candy but there's more to the story because the victim isn't probably who would you guess.

Halloween. A fun night out for little kids and parents alike. With werewolves and vampires patrolling the streets all evening, no one noticed the real monster creeping in the shadows amongst them. Not everyone can survive this night of mayhem... --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: drug-laced Halloween candy. When young Tim O’Bryan ate a poisoned treat, the community of Pasadena thought they were looking for a monster. Tim’s dad told horror stories of a strange hand in a darkened doorway that gave him the deadly candy. But police soon discovered that the perpetrator was much more insidious than anything in any slasher film. When The Man who Killed Halloween was finally made to pay for his crimes, locals celebrated in the street, yelling “trick or treat” and pelting any Candyman sympathizers with leftover Halloween sweets. His antics still have parents double checking their kids’ holiday hauls and opting for controlled trick or treating events with trusted friends, but the Candyman’s legacy is much more ominous than the story of what actually happened in a small Texas town in 1974.Don't forget that Malice by Tranquil Finds by Lakin disappears on Halloween night! We are forever paranoid about our kiddo’s Halloween candy....but why? In reality, reports of stranger tainted candy are almost non-existent while there are actually MORE documented instances of actual FAMILY MEMBERS exploiting this sinister urban legend. Come learn all about the FATHER who took “trick-or-treat” to a cold-blooded level, Ronald Clark O’Bryan - now known as, ‘the Candy Man’.
Our First Halloween Special-Timothy O'Bryan's father, Ronald, ruined Halloween for all of us because he was low on cash. "The Candyman" would poison his own son to collect life insurance, but he was not the brightest bulb in the bunch and got caught as fast as you could say "Pixie Stick".
Halloween Horrors episode 1, part 2.
Halloween Horrors episode 1. Halloween should be spooky and fun! Kids get to dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating with their friends, and eat candy all night long. But on Halloween night in 1974, 8 year old Timothy O'Bryan had his last annual candy hunt. One piece of candy he got while trick-or-treating ended up being poisoned. Who would do something like this to a child?
This is what nightmares and urban legends are made of. Generations of kids and parents still shudder when this based on a true story tale is told around the campfire.

Dr Tom O’Bryan helps scientifically unpack two commonly used yet massively misunderstood terms - Inflammation and Oxidisation, and how to think about supporting robust Immune Health during the year of COVID-19. Dr Tom O’Bryan is a 40 year+ holistic practitioner in the US, with a focus on understanding and reversing modern lifestyle diseases. He has helped 10’s of thousands of people through his clinic, online presence and two best selling books - Autoimmune Fix and You Can Fix Your Brain. Inflammation has been inappropriately vilified. It’s an effective and critical part of our immune system to fight off invasion and help with body and cellular rejuvenation. The problem is the chronic lifestyle and diet-induced inflammation, that weakens your defences against external threats such as viruses and pathogens. Oxidisation is also often misunderstood, alongside the obsession with ‘antioxidant’ marketing. So, Dr. Tom helps stitch together these topics into a single theme - how our immune system uses inflammation, antibodies, endogenous antioxidants, macrohphages, vitamin and much more to address damage and foreign invasion. This conversation is laced with great examples and analogies. We’ll talk about the deleterious role of Gluten, Plastics, Chemicals and Seed Oils on human health. Dr. Tom frames up what autoimmunity is, the linkage to metabolic syndrome, and how our bodies seem to be attacking themselves.
