On July 6, 1997 in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, Marty LeBouef, Stacie Reeves and Nicole Guidry were all shot execution style in the head. Their bodies were left in the cooler at KK’s Corner. Thedr murders were shocking. And soon, people were talking about another death. One that some people in the community thought could be linked to KK’s Corner’s massacre. On Saturday, May 17, 1997, not even three weeks before the triple homicide at KK’s Corner, Kevin Abel was fatally shot in the head at home. Police ruled Kevin’s death a suicide, but Stacie Reeves, who had been dating Kevin, believed that he had been murdered and that his murder could be tied to law enforcement, and possibly to alleged drug deals at KK’s Corner. Stacie Reeves arrived at that crime scene with her young twin daughters only minutes after police showed up there. She told police that she and Kevin were going on a date that night and that she had been planning to pick him up with her girls. And she said that he owed a LOT of money to drug dealers, who had been taking his truck as collateral. What really happened to Kevin Abel. Did he kill himself? Who were the drug dealers that he owed money to? And did Kevin’s death have anything to do with the KK’s Corner killings? Do you sometimes feel tired or even sick after eating? Did you know it could be because of inflammation? Lisa continues the conversation today with our guest Dr. Tom O'Bryan who is an expert in food sensitivities and the way they affect our lives. Did you know that bodies can attack themselves when we are eating the wrong foods? Dr. Tom has extensively researched inflammatory disease and the root mechanism behind disease. The Center for Disease Control reports that 14 out of the top 15 causes of disease are caused by chronic inflammation. He talks about how excessive inflammation is extremely dangerous and how wheat and dairy can be so unhealthy, along with lectins, soy, and corn. Dr. O'Bryan and his colleagues have debuted a new docuseries called “The Inflammation Equation: Decoding the Path to Optimal Well Being.” This series contains interviews and information from 80 experts and physicians worldwide. For info about Dr. Tom O'Bryan and to find out more about “The Inflammation Equation,” visit TheDr.com and https://rkt511.isrefer.com/go/tie24/theawareshow. The most common source of inflammation is a result of the foods we eat. Lisa asks about the elimination diet and how soon we can begin to feel better. If your immune system is fighting a food, and you eliminate it, you will begin to feel better within 3 weeks. Dr. Tom talks about how many people suffer from low-grade edema and discusses how your body holds onto water. He talks about gluten-free foods and how they are essentially just white paste. He talks about Celiac disease and how changing your diet must be done correctly. The Mediterranean diet has been touted to be one of the healthiest. It includes water, as well as fruit and vegetables. He suggests eating at least 50 different fruits and vegetables a week, including root vegetables. Himalayan buckwheat has been shown to be extremely beneficial for health. Spices and good fats, such as extra virgin olive oil, are also important. Finally, small portions of fish and poultry of good quality are important as well. This feeds your microbiome in a healthy way. He also discusses the difference between European wheat and American wheat. This is because of lectins in the wheat. You may not have gut symptoms if you eat wheat in Europe, but you are still activating the immune response. He further discusses his docuseries, “The Inflammation Equation: Decoding the Path to Optimal Well Being.” This series contains interviews and information from 80 experts and physicians worldwide. This is Part 2 of the interview. For info about Dr Tom O'Bryan and to find out more about “The Inflammation Equation,” visit TheDr.com and https://rkt511.isrefer.com/go/tie24/theawareshow.
Do you sometimes feel unwell after a meal? Are you tired or fatigued after eating? Did you know it could be a food allergy or inflammation? Our guest today is Dr. Tom O'Bryan who is an expert in food sensitivities and the way they affect our lives. Our body can attack itself when we are eating the wrong foods and cause inflammation. The Center for Disease Control reports that 14 out of the top 15 causes of disease are caused by chronic inflammation. But what is inflammation? And is it always bad for you? Dr. Tom has extensively researched inflammatory disease and the root mechanism behind disease. So, how do you reduce inflammation? In today's interview, he explains how we have very little bacteria when we are born, yet we die with 90% bacteria according to experts. Our microbiome changes due to our environment. Dr. Tom shares a personal story about the birth of his son and the microbiome he was born with during an emergency C-section. He also talks about the components of breast milk and the way it affects the baby. We must always put emphasis on a healthy microbiome. Depending on the type of bacteria you have, you may not feel well physically or mentally. You may be depressed or feeling anxiety. This is influenced by what's in your gut's microbiome. This tells the body how to function, digest, think, and so much more. He talks about metabolism and the blood stream, which activates your genes and how it is all affected by the microbiome. Inflammation can be activated. According to Dr. Tom, we go from health to disfunction, then to disease. It's always inflammation causing this. When brain fog starts, when you forget where you parked, or where you left your keys, you may be heading down the path of disease. In fact, there is a 400% increase in Alzheimer's in younger people, based on studies over the last four years. This is completely from chronic inflammation. There's new information for Baby Boomers, as well as women of childbearing age. The incidents of autism are skyrocketing as well as children on antidepressants. This can also be because of plastics found in so many places such as water bottles. Yet, there is hope and we can learn what our bodies need to be healthy. [01:00] Dr. Tom Speaks About His Health Problems Tom had cognitive issues and chest pains. By the time he was 42, Dr. Tom started to have vision problems. Tom had a cataract. An asymmetrical cataract in a 42-year-old guy is unusual. After doing some research, Dr. Tom saw that lead poisoning could trigger his health issues. When Dr. Tom tested himself for lead poisoning, he had the highest levels of lead that he had ever seen. Tom grew up one block from the Ford assembly line with no government regulations for heavy metal filtration. He was sucking in a lot of lead as a kid. [16:30] Five Pillars That Contribute To Chronic Disease Intestinal permeability is a Zonulin modulated mechanism. When you have too much Zonulin being secreted, your cells are open too much, too frequently, and too large. All disease begins in the leaky gut. There are five mechanisms that create the perfect storm in developing chronic inflammatory diseases: Genetics Environmental Triggers The impact of the environmental triggers on the microbiome in your gut Leaky gut Systemic inflammation in the body [37:25] You Have 10 Times More Bacteria In The Gut Than All The Cells In The Human Body A teaspoon of poop has more bacteria than all the stars in the known universe. Every forkful of what you put in your mouth will feed good bacteria or bad bacteria. It will take months and months and months to change the environment of your microbiome. Taking a capsule of probiotics each day will not fix your gut. [40:20] Most Bacteria In Your Gut Have 100 To 150 More Genes Than The Entire Human Genome Are we really humans with a whole lot of bacteria? Or are we bacteria having a human experience? Genes determine function; every scientist knows that. The genes that get activated stimulate the production of the proteins that determine action. Is bacteria running the ship, or are genes running the ship? [42:10] 36% of All The Molecules In Your Bloodstream Are The Metabolites From The Gut Bacteria produce exhaust; that exhaust is called the metabolites. Those metabolites get into your bloodstream. 36% of all the small molecules in your bloodstream are the metabolites of the microbiome. The more bacteria you have, the stronger the message. Whenever you have brain dysfunction, you need to fix the gut. Remember, all disease begins in the gut. [51:40] The Autoimmune Disease Solution They're Not Telling You Tom interviewed 85 different people who are the world leaders in autoimmune diseases. If you choose to do vaccines, you should give your children one at a time. You should never give children six vaccines at once. With multiple vaccines, there will be an inflammatory response. Have you ever wondered if you're spending too much time on your phone or computer? Well, then you're certainly not alone. Screen use behaviors are top of mind for so many people these days - and for good reason. Over the last few years, our world has fully transformed itself around this technology to a point where spending a majority of our day looking at a screen has become the norm in much of our society. And although screen overuse was a problem pre-pandemic, the issue has accelerated exponentially over the last few years, bringing with it an array of crisis-level challenges for so many people. So what can we do to achieve screen time sanity in today's digital world? To help answer this question, I reached out to Dr. Clifford Sussman, a renowned child and adolescent psychiatrist in the Washington, DC area, who supports kids and their families who are at the extreme end of struggling with finding balance in their screen use - and I say balance because, well let's face it... screens are an avoidable part of life in today's world and its future. As a remote-working parent with a tween who loves video games and a teen who loves her phone, I find it very challenging to find a healthy balance, not feel like a hypocrite, and just feel OKAY about my own screen use decisions. However, I learned from my conversation with Dr. Sussman that there are practical things we can all do to find that balance for ourselves and those in our lives we care about. Listen in to our conversation and learn some practical strategies you can use to achieve screen time sanity and find your own balance in our modern digital world. Here are some links to more information about Dr. Sussman and this episode's topic.Learn More About Dr. SussmanDr. Sussman's Website on TrainingsThe Ross Center - Assessment and Treatment of Digital Use DisordersDr. Sussman's YouTube ChannelThe Ross CenterScreen Use & Executive Function SkillsBeyond BookSmart's collaboration with Dr. SussmanScreenagers by Delaney RustonContact us!Reach out to us at podcast@beyondbooksmart.comIG/FB/TikTok @beyondbooksmartcoachingTranscriptHannah Choi 00:00Hi everyone and welcome to Focus Forward, an executive function podcast where we explore the challenges and celebrate the wins you'll experience as you change your life by working on improving your executive function skills. I'm your host, Hannah Choi. Hannah Choi 00:00Okay, confession time. Are you listening to me but also looking at something on your phone? It's okay if you are, we can't help it. Instagram, tick tock games, even news websites are created in ways that make you want it. Need it, even when you're doing something else. Our screen use behaviors are top of mind for many people these days. Before the pandemic, it was a problem. Now, for some it's a crisis. Hannah Choi 00:00I reached out to Dr. Clifford Sussman, a child and adolescent psychiatrist in the Washington, DC area, who supports kids and their families who are at the extreme end of struggling with finding balance and their screen use. And notice I said balance. What I learned from Dr. Susman is that balance is the key screens are a part of life, they're not going anywhere. We all know that they have many, many benefits. And when used in a healthy way, we can learn some pretty great skills that apply to other areas of our lives. As a parent of a tween who loves video games, and a teen who loves her phone. And as someone who works remotely from home on a computer for much of the day, married to a partner who also works remotely from home and is literally on a computer all day, I find it very challenging to find a healthy balance and not feel like a hypocrite and just feel okay about my own screen use decisions. I learned from Dr. Sussman that there are practical things that we can do to find that balance for ourselves, and connect with our kids to help them find it. And notice that I didn't say they're easy things we can do. It's definitely not easy. But there is some hope in there that with some focused and thoughtful effort, we can hopefully find that balance and feel better about our own screen use. And if we have kids, there's too. Okay, onto the show. Hannah Choi 00:00Hi, Cliff. Thanks so much for joining me on my podcast.Dr. Cliff Sussman 02:17Thanks for having me.Hannah Choi 02:18Um, would you like to introduce yourselves to our listeners?Dr. Cliff Sussman 02:21Sure, sure. My name is Dr. Clifford Sussman. I'm a child and adolescent psychiatrist. And I actually specialize in treating internet and video game use disorders. So all of my patients pretty much have some form of problems with excessive screen use.Hannah Choi 02:42Yeah, and that is a hot topic, especially after coming out of that, after having gone through the pandemic and even before, so how did you? How did you get into that? Why is that? How did it become such an important issue for you?Dr. Cliff Sussman 02:57Well, I guess it started, or, you know, early in childhood, discovering I love computers, myself, and I love screens myself. And I was I was always on video games when I was younger, or trying to design them myself. And then eventually learned to code and, and, you know, got really into all that stuff. And then when I became a psychiatrist, and went into private practice, specializing in mostly teenagers, parents were coming in from the day I started about 15 years ago, and telling me that their kids were addicted to video games. So this is long before the pandemic. And I would evaluate these kids because oftentimes, the parents had been that had been dismissed by by the providers they'd seen before me. And so but I would evaluate these kids and I find out that, you know, look, they, they, they have a lot of the same problems that the people I'm seeing, that I saw in my addiction rotations during residency had, you know, the seeking the, the constantly lying, the stealing, the aggression, the defensiveness, the, you know, all sorts of problems with, with, with, with the family, in the family. So, I decided to really do some research, you know, just do a lot of read a lot of studies about how the brain was affected by excessive screen use and comparing those studies to how the brain was accessed was affected by use of other substances. And, you know, started finding a lot of similarities. And eventually I decided that this problem was becoming so big and these people really needed help. That I just I decided that I really could just just work on that. And yeah, and so that there was a lot more demand than supply and providers for this problem and So, you know, and I would collaborate with a few other colleagues who are recognizing this too. You know, when we compare notes on how, you know, what was working and what wasn't. And I would base a lot of my treatments on treatments that had been effective for drug addiction, such as motivational interviewing, motivational interviewing, which is a type of psychotherapy, that's like a mix of cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic psychotherapy. And, you know, and it just sort of took off from there. And then, after the pandemic, the problem got to be so huge, even during the pandemic, but especially when people started returning to schools and having more demands placed on them. That, you know, I decided that there was no way that I could handle all the cases, you know, and my and a few of my colleagues who are who are recognizing this. And so, I decided to start putting a lot of focus and doing things like this, where I can educate the community, and I even have a lot of stuff now, where I'm training other providers, a lot of doing courses for other providers online, and things like that.Hannah Choi 06:16That's great. I would love to talk with you more about that later on. I do have a question for you about the brain. You mentioned the brain, what? What happens in the brain? And I know that there's dopamine involved, but maybe for our listeners, you can explain what happens in the brain when, you know, when someone really feels like they need to be on a screen.Dr. Cliff Sussman 06:43Yeah, yeah, that's, I mean, that that is it is related to dopamine. And so So dopamine is the neurotransmitter that we release, it's thought of as the pleasure neurotransmitter. So people think we just release it when we get pleasure. But it's a little more nuanced than that we release dopamine when we get exactly what we want, when we want. So I think people people think of if you got pleasure, but it was very delayed, you know, you wouldn't release as much dopamine as if you got the same pleasure right away. So that's why things like cigarettes, which don't get you nearly as high as other drugs, but get you that buzz right away, because you smoke it, and the smoke goes right into your bloodstream, they release a lot of dopamine, and our, you know, easily as addictive as much more intoxicating drugs that have more delayed. So, you know, it was a real survival, a real survival neurotransmitter. Because, you know, when you're, let's say, a caveman, you, you need something right away, it helps you survive if you get it right away. Right, right, you know, so you know, you want to satisfy those needs immediately. Before you get eaten by a saber toothed Tiger.Hannah Choi 08:14We don't want that to happen.Dr. Cliff Sussman 08:16So yeah, so what happens in the brain when, when, when we're on anything that gives us instant gratification. And in particular screens, because that gives us not just instant gratification, but continuous instant gratification, is it the brain releases lots of dopamine. And you know, there's nothing wrong with that, what's the problem is when you keep doing it, and when the brain keeps releasing dopamine for hours and hours on end, right, like cavemen never got what they wanted for that long at a time. I mean, so the brain wasn't designed to handle that much of getting what you want for that long time. And so what happens is you become desensitized to dopamine, the receptors in the brain for dopamine, they, they go through a process called downregulation. And that and a bunch of other more complicated processes, basically result in you needing to work even harder to get instant gratification. And, and getting the same amount of dopamine that you did before won't feel as good. So you need even more. And so that's why that's one of the reasons why it's just so hard to get off screen. When you've been on it for a really long time. You know, when when you get off and stop getting that dopamine. Now you you actually feel worse than before you start.Hannah Choi 09:43Right. So you want to get back on to avoid that feeling.Dr. Cliff Sussman 09:49 Yeah, and that's really basically the process in all addictions.Hannah Choi 09:52Yeah, right, right. Yeah.Dr. Cliff Sussman 09:54So it's like it's like too much of a good thing. You know, I don't and I like it. said I enjoy gaming, you know, so I don't I don't think that that using a video game for a half an hour or an hour is such a terrible thing. I think it can be a great experience. And there's lots of even educational opportunities or, you know, opportunities to solve puzzles are make friends or do all sorts of great things, right? Yeah. But it's the hours and hours and hours on end. And when people during the pandemic, we're living in the virtual world instead of the real world, it really got to be a big problem.Hannah Choi 10:31Yeah, right. So I had a personal experience with this. A couple of weeks ago, my son and I both had COVID at the same time, so he and I were all like, we're Yeah, it was, yeah, it was not fun. And, and so we were both isolated, we're both the same room, and I had work I had to do, and he did not feel great. So I let him use his, like, play Minecraft and do screens like, kind of all day. And I, I felt so guilty because I know!Dr. Cliff Sussman 11:03And that was the first time you'd done that? Because most parents I've worked with have found that out, have crossed that a long time ago, you knowHannah Choi 11:11Yeah, I mean, I guess I had done it. But it hadn't been in a while. And it hadn't been for so many days. And I did notice afterwards, he had a hard time, like thinking of something else to do. And, and I didn't feel great. So I had a hard time motivating myself to encourage him to do something different. So I can see how...Dr. Cliff Sussman 11:36Everything else starts to pale in comparison. Yeah, you know, it can turn an, you know, I like to divide activities into what I call high dopamine activities. I use HDA for short and long dopamine activities, or LDA. And I call you know, the, there's a lot of low dopamine activities that are enjoyable, meaning activities that just require more patience that have more delay in their gratification, but they're still gratifying. Right? So you know, so we're not just talking about homework and exercise, we're also talking about things like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, you know, painting a picture, learning to play an instrument. These things, you know, those are the types of things that your son might really enjoy doing, until they've, you know, gotten a taste of a high dopamine activity for a very long time. You know, and then all of a sudden, those other things, just, you know, well, the thing you heard all the time during the pandemic was I'm bored. There's nothing to do.Hannah Choi 12:39Yeah, there's nothing right. Yeah, yeah. It's funny that you say play an instrument. So my son plays piano, and I, I'm thinking about it, like I did notice when we came out of isolation, and we were back in the real world, it was harder for him to like, sit down and play the piano, but I am noticing over the past few days, he's, he's kind of getting back into it now. So that's not permanent.Dr. Cliff Sussman 13:04And you don't want to forget that. I played the piano when I was a kid for a couple years. And I think I said to my mom, you know, look, for my seventh birthday, can I just quit piano because the processing is really boring, and I don't want to have to learn all the skills. And she's like, okay, you know, and, and then a couple years later, I guess when I became a teenager, I was like, I really wish I knew how to play an instrument. Mom, why did you let me I took up guitar instead. Okay, so that's good. But yeah, it's important when kids get bored with their instruments, not to like, Forget everything they know, and just come away from it to try and just pick it up every now and then keep it a little fresh.Hannah Choi 13:48Right, right. So that makes me think of like, how can this might be jumping ahead a little bit, but how can people balance? How can people find a nice balance between those LDAs and HDA active, activities?Dr. Cliff Sussman 14:04Well, you're hitting the nail on the head. I mean, to me, that's the real key is finding a balance, right? Because you're definitely let's face it in this world, you're not going to have abstinence from the digital world. You know, and it's impossible. Yeah. And and, you know, you wouldn't function very well if you did, to be honest. So it really is about finding balance. And so I have a lot of suggestions for how to do that on my website that you were referring to earlier at CliffordSussmanmd.com. But I can try to highlight some of the main ones. So I think the some of the biggest keys are having a lot of structure in your schedule. You know, having and keeping a schedule, you know, keeping a routine that was so important during the pandemic, when you know, prior to the pandemic, a big ratio of my patients were first year college dropouts, because they went from the highly structured setting of high school to the unstructured setting of college. And so that allows for hours and hours of binging. Well, during the pandemic, it basically like every high school kid became a college kid, because they were at home with like, very little structure. And so, you know, so structure is really key to balance. Having something to do at a certain time until a certain time, you know, getting your kids involved in daily repeating activities, like sports, or music, or joining a chorus or something like that Robotics Club. So that's important. I would also say that setting some some time limits, consistent time limits to how long you can be on a screen, but also, how long you need to be off a screen or at least doing a low dopamine activity, if it is on a screen until you can get on again, it's really important for balance. But the number one thing is, as I already alluded to, is not binging you know, so. So if you're, if you're keeping each screen block to a consistent length of time, that's, let's say, an hour or less, depending on the age of the child, and waiting at least that amount of time before you get on again, you know, especially during unstructured time, then then I think you're going to be way ahead of the game for most families. And that's how I'd answer that.Hannah Choi 16:47Yeah, those are really great suggestions. And, and I like that there is so much balance built into all of those suggestions. So it really does show that that is the key. So it's something that we had talked about earlier, and I had never I had never thought about this before. But you, you talked about how people use the word addiction, like screen addiction, casually, like "Oh, I'm so addicted to my screen". But that's not technically true. Right? Can you explain to the listeners, what the difference is between addiction and what you said was functional dependence?Dr. Cliff Sussman 17:25Yeah, well, so. So what addiction really means is that you're you can't get off of something, despite the problems it's causing for you. So it's, it's the inability to control an activity. Combined with it having causing dysfunction in your life. And the level of addiction is measured by not how many hours you're on a screen, or how much of a drug you're taking, but how much it's negatively affecting your life. So, and I do think people think of addiction as kind of an all or nothing thing, but it really is, to me, it's more of a continuum, like you can be really addicted to something. If you're you've like dropped out of school, and you still earn 1000s of dollars, and you know, your life is completely in shambles. Or you can be a little addicted to something if you know, dropped your grades from an A to a B minus, you know, so. But I mean, I think kids generally when they say this game is so addictive, what they mean is that they can't stop playing. And so they're not completely wrong, you know, because it is designed that way to make it so they can't stop playing. As far as like, being dependent on something that just means you know what it sounds like, like you need it, like you can't function without it. And so, you know, you can be the you can be dependent on something without being addicted to it if you still can manage your life and live a good life that's successful, where you're getting what you need out of it. And so, yeah, I mean, I think, I mean, think of a diabetic dependent on insulin, right? I mean, they can't live without it. But that doesn't mean that it's dysfunctional to take right, you know, and so a lot of us really need our screens. We need them like right now we're on screens, you know, that that doesn't make us addicted, right. We're using it in a functional way now. Yeah. So yeah, that's, that's, does that answer your question?Hannah Choi 19:36Yeah. Yeah, it does. And what you just said reminds me of going back to when my son and I were isolating together in during the time of COVID I was on my I felt guilty because I was on my screen. So I felt a little bit like I was being, you know, hypocritical, because I was saying, like, you need to get off and here I am, you know, typing away on my screen. And, but I didn't want to be on, I had to be on there.Dr. Cliff Sussman 20:04You were doing low dopamine screen actors,Dr. Cliff Sussman 20:06Yeah, it was very low-dopamine!Dr. Cliff Sussman 20:08You were setting a good example. But what I do see a lot of parents doing is, you know, they're on a cell phone, let's say, going down all these rabbit holes of social media, you know, saying to their kid to get off a video game that doesn't play very, you know, and there's definitely a lot of parents I work with who are who are sort of like, struggling themselves to get off their screens. And, you know, so and let's face it, like with all drug use, and all substances, with all behavioral addictions, like it runs in families, right, it's, there's a genetic component. So yeah, and by the way, you you mentioned this, this episode of, of you and your son being sick. And, you know, one of the problems with that is that you're trapped in the house, you know, you can't like go outside to do low dopamine activities, where there's probably a lot more dopamine activities, you know, so, but that also is a reason I emphasize, because people had to stay injuring COVID, you know, during for quarantine purposes, as well. So, I emphasized a lot of environmental cues, like being aware of environmental cues as as a big part of achieving balance. So if you're, if an alcoholic is avoids going in the bar, it's much harder, it's much easier to avoid having a drink, right? It's much harder when you're in the bar. Because you have all the cues of the bar, you have the sights, sounds and smells, you know, the, you see a row of bottles, you see the bartender, it's like, it's very hard to drink water in a bar. And so, so what I try to help parents do, and this is kind of a extended answer to your question about how to, you know, how do you get balance, because I try to help them have like low dopamine and high dopamine zones in the house. So you start to associate cues of like what activity you should be doing. So in other words, when we were, you know, before COVID, and since since the quarantines ended, when kids do their learning, they're in a classroom, right. And so they're sitting at a desk, they've got a teacher, they got a whiteboard, they've got hopefully other kids around, like, maybe some of them at least paying attention to the teacher. And, you know, so they've got the cues around them that, hey, it's time to learn, you know, but when they were, when they were taking class during COVID, they were on the same screen, they were playing Minecraft on all day. And usually, they had another screen open with Discord on it. So like, good luck, you know, that that's really trying to drink water in a bar. So that's why I emphasize a lot, like look at what your home looks like, you know, do you have a separate area for where they do their gaming? And for where they do their studying? You know, and they're sleeping, you know, are they just do they have a cell phone and three other devices next to their bed all the time or next to where they're doing their work? Because if so, good luck, you know, they're getting the wrong cues. You know, so I tried to emphasize having a zone in the house put aside kind of like an arcade room, where, when it's time for kids to have their high dopamine activities, they can go into that sort of arcade room. And, you know, all the devices will be in there. But the catch is that when that hour or whatever is up, maybe half an hour, if they're a little kid, the devices stay in there, and they leave. And they go back into the low dopamine zone. Yeah, a little zone, because so, so that way, you know what, what happens is, you don't have to rip a device out of the kid's hand, you just have to get them to go from one location to another.Hannah Choi 24:02Right, right. Yeah. And so then if it like, say, you don't have a separate place, could you just say, like, you always have to sit? Like if you're going to be using your game, your whatever, you have to sit at this table or something?Dr. Cliff Sussman 24:16Yeah. Although although usually if it's a teenager and you say you have to do something, they'll do the opposite. So yeah. You know, kind of work on how you how you discuss it with them, but that could be the rules that you agree on, you know, and, and, you know, and if you make rules like that, you can also clarify what the sort of natural or logical consequence of breaking those rules are, because they're going to, you know, so Right. Yeah. So like if for example, if they stay in the in the high dopamine room for longer than they're supposed to, you could agree on something like okay, you were in there five minutes too long. So you lose three times five, which is 15 minutes off the next lock in there. You And then you don't need a power struggle, you know? Yeah. Right. You can even reward them for getting off on their own in time. Just not with extra screen time. Yeah.Hannah Choi 25:10Yeah, you get half an hour more.Dr. Cliff Sussman 25:14Yeah, I mean, it's, it's, I that's a system that's worked for a lot of my parents.Hannah Choi 25:19And do would you say, in general, kids are open to talking with their parents about their screen use and in screen use behavior? And, and kind of discussing what it's like for them?Dr. Cliff Sussman 25:35Well, it depends on the kid, you know, and it depends on their age. And, you know, I mean, for so so that's a complicated question. You know, if you have a kid who's like really addicted to screens and kids, and really struggling with it, they may be in denial, which and so they may be get very defensive when parents tried to talk to them about it. But then at the same time, there's, there's like, it's a normal teenage thing to not want to discuss everything with your parents, and not necessarily want to share all your feelings with them, especially when you're in that early teenage, those early teenage years, like 12-13, because you're trying to like, sort out your, your identity among your peers, and you're trying to sort of push a cast aside the previous generation and join your peers. So, you know, so So I don't think parents should take it too, personally, if their kids don't want to talk about it. But you know, kids do like when their parents care about what they're interested in, you know, and if you, you know, can validate that they really enjoy their games, and that they really enjoy their computer and that they're not, you know, that, that it can be really tough for them to stop. You know, what you don't want to do as a parent and see, like I just, you know, you don't want to say to your kid, like, like that, you know, I don't understand why that's fun for you. That's, you know, that's not important. You shouldn't be doing because to them, it's very important. You know, it's, it's, you know, it's, it may be how they're socializing. It may be how, I mean, they may care a lot about how a lot more about how well they do in a video game than other things. And, you know, you may not agree with that, but you got to meet them where they are good luck reaching them,Hannah Choi 27:24you know, yeah, yeah, you can't reach them unless you validate them.Dr. Cliff Sussman 27:27Yeah. And validating a behavior is not the same as enabling it. You know, I think that's important for parents, just because you're acknowledging that a kid loves their video game, or that they're really upset about having to stop playing it. You know, rather than pretending they're not upset, you know, that that's not the same thing as saying, Oh, you can have all the games you want, you know?Hannah Choi 27:50Yeah, that's such an important point to remember.Dr. Cliff Sussman 27:55You can set limits, but then validate how, you know, the effect it's having on them, trying to abide by those limits.Hannah Choi 28:02Right. And then also, I imagine sharing your own experience with having challenges regulating your own screen use. And, you know, sharing Yeah, like, I get that, because I feel that way about whatever. And so. So for parents, those, those cues for the kids can also be the parents behavior, and just being a good role model. Right?Dr. Cliff Sussman 28:31Yeah. Yeah. I mean, look, kids are much more likely to do what we do than what we say. So, you know, I think the most effective way to really influence our kids being self regulated and balanced is to be that way ourselves and to work on that ourselves as parents and actually model that behavior. You know, and maybe even like, let let your child know, look, I you know, I set a timer, and I stopped when the timer went off, and it wasn't easy for me to do I want to keep doing it, but I have to get back to work, you know. So, you know, your, your basic your being a good influence on that type of behavior.Hannah Choi 29:14Yeah. Just thinking about my own house and how, how we do things. Yeah. And it's hard. I mean, it's it's really hard. You're right, they do. They the the makers of all these things, every website, every every social media app, every game, they make it so you want it. You want it bad, it's hard. Yeah, yeah. If you're just reading the news, you just pull down and then you got a whole new news article to read.Dr. Cliff Sussman 29:42Yeah, well, there's endless scrolling. It's all you know, it's all sort of designed and coded the way they know we'll get people to stay on the longest. So you know, and even they even have AI that does that. So, and you know, and they understand like the basic psychological concepts concepts of things like gambling, that, you know, if you, if you give people a different reward every time, and sometimes no reward at all. It's the whatever, whatever it is, they're going to do a lot more of than if you just reward them the same way each time. So that's called variable ratio reinforcement. And that's why, you know, when you're scrolling down, you know, sometimes it's like, for example, you may think, Okay, well, this AI isn't very good, because they keep showing me things in my feed that I'm not interested in at all right. And occasionally, I'll like one, and I'll click on it, you know, or occasionally, I'll find something that's interesting, you know, but I have to keep scrolling and scrolling until I actually find something. Well, guess what, that's what they want. They don't want you to like everything. I mean, for one thing, they can't get any information about you, if you like everything, but for another thing, you know, that it's not as addictive if you like everything. You know, it's actually more addictive, if you're disappointed sometimes. And if there's like, maybe I'll like the next one better, right? That's why you see people in the casinos just pulling those levers over and over again, on the slot machine.Hannah Choi 31:11Yeah, right, that same action. Dr. Cliff Sussman 31:14Like mice. Hannah Choi 31:17We're all just a bunch of mice. Don't those don't the makers of like the people that that apply that psychology? Don't they have some? Gosh, some guilt or something like, oh, they have to be, uhhh, I don't get it.Dr. Cliff Sussman 31:33Ethics and money don't always go together? But, you knowHannah Choi 31:35No, no.Dr. Cliff Sussman 31:36I mean, that's the world we're in. You know, I mean, I have very little control over the tech industry, I have a lot more say, I think and you know, what messages I can send to parents and kids about the way to cope with this type of, you know, just how to play the cards were dealt the best, you know, how to really, you know, maybe that was a bad analogy.Hannah Choi 32:02Bringing us back to gambling!Dr. Cliff Sussman 32:03Yeah, bringing us back to gambling. But yeah, I mean, just how to how to deal with this challenge that we're always faced with, you know, I mean, there's always, there's always struggles and challenges for humans to survive. And this is the one we have right now.Hannah Choi 32:19This is the one we have right now. Yeah, yep. Yeah. No more saber toothed tigers. That's good.Dr. Cliff Sussman 32:26Yeah, that's right. I mean, yeah, I guess we're doing a little better.Hannah Choi 32:32So what do you like, what about, are there any trends or things? You know, speaking of now that it's just it is just part of life? Is there anything that's really important for people to know about? About this? Like, is there any additional message that you would like to share with our listeners?Dr. Cliff Sussman 32:53Well, um, a lot of parents asked me about parental control software. I, again, I think if you have the boundaries, clear on things like, you know, low dopamine and high dopamine areas, you don't need as much of that, you know, I like direct parental engagement, I think that's a good healthy thing. And I think sometimes parents rely too much on computers to do it for them. And so like parental control software, and things like that. So it goes beyond just the fact that kids can hack around it, that I that I, you know, tell parents to not completely rely on parental control software, that it's important to have clear rules laid out and consequences and to be able to interact with your kids concerning those consequences. Without having major power struggles and being able to really, again, try to meet them where they are, but also, you know, set some limits. And, you know, and find a balance as a parent between setting limits, and allowing your kids to self regulate, and, and not to micromanage them too much, and let them learn from their own natural consequences.Hannah Choi 34:14Yeah, and if you don't provide them the opportunities to do that, when they do go off to college, or go move out of the house and move on to their own, then they're not going to have any experience to draw from, or resources to draw from. Exactly. Yeah. And it is difficult because there are so many resources out there and a lot of parents not resources, but a lot of those parental control apps or programs. And also, they may be their friends or using them to feel like oh, like maybe I should use this. You're my kid and it's harder to just like rely on your own your Yeah, relationship with your child.Dr. Cliff Sussman 35:02And, and, and even if other parents are using them. They may be, like, we don't know exactly how they're using them, ya know. So if even if you get the software, you know, it's, and you find that it helps for some things you don't want, it's just that you don't want to depend on it too much, you know, you don't want to over rely on it. Like, for example, I think that like screen time, the screen time app on iPhones, for example, is a good way to just track what your kids are doing online. Like it tells you what apps they're on, but it also tells you how much time they were on their phone. Yeah. You know, to some extent, and, you know, sometimes it can, it can misread things, but but the point is that it's a good way to just have feedback on what your kids are doing. But it's not doing the policing for you. It's not, like cutting them off, it's just giving you the information, it's just giving you the information. So it helps you monitor as the parent. And that's pretty useful. You know, if you don't want to be looking over their shoulder all the time, but at the same time, I think sometimes it's good to like actually go in the room where they're studying.Hannah Choi 35:14Yeah, whatcha doing? Yeah.Dr. Cliff Sussman 36:15I mean, if every time you go in while they're doing homework, they're like minimizing, you know, an app like, you know, something's you know, the homeworks not getting done.Hannah Choi 36:25Yeah, yeah. It's also beneficial for the kid to learn how many hours they're spending on it. I think that we don't realize how quickly time flies while we're on that. I had, I had a client who I had, he had never looked at his he was in college, and he had never looked at his screen time use. And so I just encouraged him to, and oh, my god, I just, my heart broke for him, I'll never in my life forget the way that his face, his jaw just dropped. He had no idea he wouldn't tell me the time.Dr. Cliff Sussman 36:58Yeah, it's called time distortion, you know, track of real world time. And it certainly happens to me when I play video games, which is why I set a timer. You know, it's like surprised by how soon it goes off.Hannah Choi 37:11I am not really I'm not into video games, and I'm not, I'm very much a like practical person when it comes to my phone. Like I'm on it a lot, but it's just because I'm like texting or researching something. But recently, I did look at my time totals, and I realized my Instagram was kind of out of control. Yeah, so I put a time limit on there. And it really has helped. Yeah. But but that's just me. And that's, you know, that's how I am. And I know, like for my son, it's a lot harder. He's and my husband to it's they're just different. They're very different for me with how they use their phones.Dr. Cliff Sussman 37:49Yeah, and social media is a big time suck. But, you know, look, I think that there's two skills that we need to have to be able to have use our devices in a healthy way. Like, we need to be able to delay our gratification, which means we can't be like checking our Instagrams every five minutes, you know, and, and then we need to be able to put on the brakes, like we need to be able to stop when it's time to stop, you know, when the timer does go off, we have to stop and move on. And transition. And those are two skills that we wouldn't really develop at all if we were just abstinent. You know, so it's like, it's actually. So I see screentime as an opportunity to work on those skills, you know, and, and so I'll present it to kids is kind of a challenge for them. You know, you, you know, if, if they were seeing me for cocaine, they I wouldn't be saying to them, Well, you know, you could try to wait before you use your cocaine and stop using in the middle. But you can you actually have that opportunity with screens? Yeah, you know, to work on those skills. And their skills, not just for screening is there. Yeah,Hannah Choi 39:01that's what I was. Right? I was just gonna say that. Yeah. Yep. So how can we, as you know, like me as an executive function coach and protect other practitioners who might not know about handling, screen, excessive screen use or screen addiction? How can we support our clients that might be struggling that with that,Dr. Cliff Sussman 39:28Right, so there is more education out there now on the nature of this problem, and also suggestions for how to how to manage it. So you could, I have a course for example, on the Ross Center website, it's and it provides CE credits for some practitioners. But for others, it's if you're not getting the credits, and you're just taking the course it's less expensive, so and it's a very inexpensive course to begin with so, so you can get the link for that at my website or just go to the Ross Center's website. Yeah, I mean, also, I think that there's, there's a, there's a lot of good resources, I was the technical editor for Overcoming Internet Addiction for Dummies. And I think that book came out nice. That was my colleague, David Greenfield. So, there's a lot of good stuff in there. You know, I think I think clinicians have to just be aware of it and start recognizing it, and they should also know, sort of the red flags to look for. And if they're, if they don't specialize in it, when they see those red flags, they should be able to, you know, maybe refer to somebody who's an expert in that. So just, you know, know, the signs of addiction. And, you know, I'll, of course look for things like kids. You know, mental health professionals know, for example, the screen for suicide, but that you should screen for, you know, is a kid threatening to kill themselves, particularly when the parents are taking the screen away. You know, I like they're there. So there's red flags that are more directly related to screen problems, you know?Hannah Choi 41:21And then I guess a related question would be, how can at what point should parents seek help outside of the, you know, tips and ideas that we've already talked about today?Dr. Cliff Sussman 41:34Well, parents should be aware of some red flags to just like clinicians should and then that, and that's definitely when to go for help. So things like, you know, excessive lying about screen use, stealing money to use screens, and the kids I work with aren't just, like, using their hacking skills to steal their parents credit card information on the computer, they're literally going into the wallets and removing the credit cards, like, That's how desperate they are to get on as fast as possible. There. Yeah. So also things like aggression, when you try to separate the kid from their screen. You know, just a lot of irritability, when they're not on their screen. You know, a lot of a lot of parents, if they can't get help immediately, and they really suspect there's a big problem, they may want to try just having like a, say, a three to seven day screen detox, you know, like, try going on a camping trip, or going on vacation somewhere and just getting your kids disconnected from the internetHannah Choi 42:47With a natural limitation on theDr. Cliff Sussman 42:49Yeah, with a lot of structure in the environment. And, you know, you will see, a lot of parents will see huge changes just from really after, I'd say the second day, they can start seeing kids, like their personalities completely changed. And a lot of those red flags like, seemingly gone, which doesn't mean that your problem is gone, it probably just proves you have the problem that you know, me because as soon as they get their screens back, you know, those those problems will come back. So that's when you have to learn the balance. But starting out with a detox is often a good approach.Hannah Choi 43:29Yeah. And I like how you suggested like, on like going camping or something where so it's not, it's not you as the parent saying, we can't. It's the nature nature is saying you can't. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's great. Is there anything else you'd like to share with our listeners that is?Dr. Cliff Sussman 43:51Well, just emphasize that that, like what you said at the beginning, that there's a lot of more information they can get on my website. So CliffordSussmanmd.com.Hannah Choi 44:06Yeah, you have to check out i'll put the link in the show notes. Cliff's website is just packed full of really, really, like useful actionable tips and ideas. And, and I have to say, looking through it made me feel better about my concerns about my own kids screen use and how that there are a lot of like, really good things that we can do. And there's a lot of support and information out there. Dr. Cliff Sussman 44:39Yeah, we need more though. We're going to and we're going to work on that we're going to work on getting a lot more support for parents struggling with this and, you know, cuz cuz more and more of us are becoming aware of how huge a crisis this is, and we're not ignoring the elephant in the room, you know.Hannah Choi 44:56Right. Yeah, it is time to tackle that elephant and to take control. Great. Well, thank you so much for joining me. It was really interesting. And, and there is some hope in there as you know, as, as we were saying we are really surrounded by it. And it is really difficult to, yeah, like you said, you can't practice abstinence. It's just not possible. But there are a lot of really great strategies that and also opportunities to learn and opportunities to connect with your kids, which are never not a good use of your time. Yeah, that's right. Great. All right. Well, thanks again for joining me. And, yes, listeners, please check out the show notes because you'll, you'll just be really glad to see all this information there. All right. Okay. Thanks. Dr. Cliff Sussman 45:48Thank you. Bye, bye.Hannah Choi 45:50And that's our show for today. You can now get back to what you were doing before I so rudely called you out on it. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. You can do whatever you want. And I sure won't judge you for it because I am over here trying to find my own screen use balance. But if you've got the time, be sure to check out those show notes for links to learn more about Dr. Sussman and the excellent work he's doing. If you're a provider of support for people who may be dealing with screen addiction, I recommend taking a look at his training materials. There are some excellent resources in there. This week's episode focuses on the environmental factors which disrupt the immune system. Today's guest, Dr. Tom O'Bryan is the author of the bestselling book ‘The Autoimmune Fix' and the creator of the online docu-series ‘Betrayal, The Autoimmune Disease Solution They're Not Telling You'. He is also an internationally recognized speaker and very sought after workshop leader, specializing in gluten and its impact on health and the development of autoimmune disease. Join us as we discuss chemicals, the rising amount of autoimmune diseases, and what you can do to reduce daily intake of toxins. IN THIS EPISODE: [05:00] With any chronic inflammatory disease, where does the inflammation come from? It always comes back to the same mechanisms. [10:00] The leaky gut, and the larger molecules going through into the bloodstream. [15:00] People who were tested that had elevated antibodies were all healthy. But within three years, 87% of those people were diagnosed with an auto-immune disease. [20:00] The statistics of pregnancy when eating organic fruits and vegetables compared to conventional produce from the supermarket. [25:00] There is no evidence of a plastic bottle of water affecting you, but chemicals are accumulating in our body over time and autoimmune diseases are increasing every year. [34:00] When implementing lifestyle changes, the most important thing you can do is be kind to yourself and to be patient. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Autoimmune diseases are on the rise, with the accumulation of toxins in the food we consume and environmental factors resulting in our immune system trying to keep up. There's no evidence of a single plastic cup or bottle affecting our health, but the chemicals accumulate in your body. Every auto immune disease is going up between four and 9% every single year. There are steps to reduce the amount of chemicals you take in, including having indoor plants, eating organic foods and using negative ion generators in your car. 23. Simple Detox Hacks - A Conversation With Dr. Tom O'Bryan I met Dr. O'Bryan at my national nutrition conference in April. While he certainly is one of the world's leading experts in gluten, he also proved to be an expert on the toxins in our environment. For example, he got my attention when he mentioned that the chemicals in nail polish hit our bloodstream within four minutes. According to research, 50% of men and 41% of women will develop cancer in their lifetime. What is causing this epidemic of cancer in our world? I know that there's no easy answer, but I think we'd be foolish not to take a look at the toxins that surround us as possible contributors to this disease. According to Dr. O'Bryan, we are in contact with over 700,000 toxins daily! Listen to today's podcast to learn some of his simple hacks to reduce the toxins in your life; spoiler alert, one of these hacks was used by NASA!

So honored to speak to Dr Tom O'Bryan about what's wrong with wheat?!?
To this day, I get asked if gluten is problematic. And I often get pushback from people who tell me that they have no reactivity to it and that their doctor or nutritionist doesn't think it's problematic. But when they work with me and we dig deeper into their medical and family history, I see a wide variety of symptoms related to the gluten in their diets. To make matters worse, gluten is often found in foods that wouldn't normally contain gluten, but have been exposed to cross-contamination in how and where they are grown or in processing. This is especially true with oats!Another scary fact is that glyphosate, the herbicide otherwise known as Roundup, is used as a desiccant to dry out oats and other gluten-free grains. Glyphosate is a common underlying cause of autoimmune disease.Today's guest is a world leader on gluten sensitivity and inflammation.Dr. Tom O'Bryan is the founder of theDr.com and his most recent book, You Can Fix Your Brain, **was received with global accolades. When it comes to getting healthy, Dr. Tom's goal for you is making it easy to do the right thing. Dr. Jeanette welcomes Dr. Tom O'Bryan, author of THE AUTOIMMUNE FIX, to explore how we contribute to the health and disease of our bodies.Autoimmune disease, inflammation, or feeling awful and just do not know what is wrong with you? Have you been asking the questions for decades and not feeling better at the start of your day?How did we get into this place of struggling with our health? Why are there so many symptoms and so few answers? What are we breathing in, putting on and in our bodies, how do we nourish our body, mind and soul, and do we know what is good or bad for us?Everything that comes within our personal space, right down to each cell, is affected by many forces and products over 24 hours. What are our exposures and how can we start to clear our space, clean up our choices, and create a rejuvenating health plan that reduces our hurts and pains each day? Perhaps, when we start to clean up things around us and within us, the body can then see where it needs further help and healing. How well are you sleeping since the pandemic? What changes have there been in your life? Do you know how those might be affecting your health- specifically brain health long term? And what you can do to protect yourself. My guest… Dr. Tom O’Bryan is considered a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ for chronic disease and teaches that recognizing and addressing the underlying mechanisms that activate an immune response is the map to the highway towards better health. He holds teaching Faculty positions with the Institute for Functional Medicine and the National University of Health Sciences. He has trained and certified tens of thousands of practitioners around the world in advanced understanding of the impact of wheat sensitivity and the development of individual autoimmune diseases. Questions we cover in this episode: Dr. Tom, I recently heard a short presentation on Instagram in which you were talking about vertigo, something several of my listeners have dealt with. You shared I believe four different theories about it and ways to cure it… I would love to start there before we dive into the rest of our discussion. Please share with our listeners in your own words how you got started in your career and got interested specifically on brain health. At the mention of brain health, every listener can identify with losing the keys, or being unable to find the phone… they’re holding. But also, especially with regard to family history of dementia or Alzheimer’s there’s another level of concern. How do you define brain health? Our audience is mostly female 45-65, when it comes to brain health is one gender or age range most susceptible to deterioration, or is there a time when we need to begin paying more attention to our brain health? If I were creating a body-based fitness prescription I would include muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility based on an individual’s status. Of course, we know exercise is also beneficial for the brain. Is there more? something similar for brain health? What are the components of a “brain health prescription?” What do poor sleep or chronic stress even beyond daily stressors– say during a pandemic – do to brain health? What’s your biggest concern about brain health during this moment we’re in? How resilient is the brain? We’re all going through some level of stress right now for our own personal reasons, when this is “over” can the brain bounce back, so-to-speak? Welcome back to the Waist Away podcast! Today's guest is the founder of theDR.com, the visionary behind the Gluten Summit, the author of several books including the Autoimmune Fix, which won the National Book Award. He released a docu-series called “The Autoimmune Disease Solution They’re Not Telling You” , which has been watched by over 500,000 people worldwide. Video version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI9eI-SlFtU&feature=youtu.be Dr O'Bryan's website: https://thedr.com/ LISTENER QUESTIONS: Q1 - 31:27 A few months back, I tested with my Doctor and found out that I am gluten intolerant, so I’ve been really careful to eat gluten free. I had my husband and son tested as well, and they don’t appear to be intolerant. I didn’t really make any changes to their diets, but now I am starting to wonder, Should I be limiting their gluten as well? I have some friends who eat gluten free, but they aren’t gluten intolerant…should we all be avoiding gluten like the plague? I get such mixed messages. Heather in Lubbock, TX Q2 - 35:05 I stopped breast feeding my daughter around 11 months old, and now she is 4. She drinks organic whole milk about twice a day and loves it, she asks for it if I forget to give it to her. But now I am reading that kids shouldn’t drink milk past a certain age. I know so many people are concerned about dairy, and I personally drink almond milk, but my daughter wants the real thing. What is your opinion on cows milk for children? Is there an age that we should stop serving it to them? Jamie in Knoxville Q3 - 40:15 I have read a lot about the benefits of sauna for Arthritis, and have been going to the sauna at my gym every day after workout. But now everyone is talking about INFRARED saunas. What is the difference in the benefits of a traditional sauna like I have at my gym and an infrared sauna? Do I need to track down an infrared, or will the standard sauna at my gym do the trick? Helen in Fairfax Q4 - 43:25 What is your opinion on Autoimmune disease and working out? I am diagnosed with Lupus and my doctor is always telling me things like I should be listening to my body and taking it easy when I am in a flare up. But I’ve noticed that when I work out, even when I am feeling awful, I do feel a little bit better overall afterwards. The only problem is after I workout, I puff up like a blow fish. Why is my body puffing up after a workout? And does this mean I should be taking it easy? I don’t want my life to stop because I don’t feel well. Amy in St Pete Q5 - 47:55 I always wear toe nail polish and get regular pedicures. I took the polish off myself a couple of weeks ago and noticed that my nails were extremely yellow and overall unhealthy looking. I decided to leave the polish off for a few weeks to let them breathe, and they haven’t improved! A lot of things that I read online point to autoimmune issues, and some scary things like liver problems. But I also know that it can be simple like some sort of deficiency. Is this something I should be concerned with? What can I do to improve my nail health, and to consider the root cause? Are you listening to the messages your body is giving? Your immune system is a powerful force that is designed to protect you, sending you signals when it is time to make an adjustment. The problem is that too often doctors tell us that we are "fine," or that our headaches and weight gain are caused simply by stress. These symptoms are not normal, and may indicate a current or potential autoimmune condition that can only get worse if not addressed. Focusing on tried-and-tested solutions to not only help you feel better, but heal the inflammation that is causing symptoms or disease, The Autoimmune Fix will teach you how to reverse autoimmunity before it's too late. In The Autoimmune Fix, today's special guest, Dr. Tom O'Bryan, incites a revolution against mediocre health and urges us to "wake up" by no longer accepting that our unfavorable symptoms or disease diagnoses are here to stay. Rampant chronic disease and autoimmune disorders are increasing and traditional medicine in the U.S. tends to treat only symptoms as they arise. With the empowering information set forth in this book, it is no longer necessary to sit back and accept the medical establishment's reasoning behind your weight gain, fatigue and digestive issues. Tom O'Bryan, DC, CCN, DACBN, is an internationally recognized speaker and writer on chronic disease and metabolic disorders. He organized the popular Gluten Summit in November 2013. Dr. O'Bryan has more than 30 years of experience as a functional medicine practitioner and is adjunct faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine. He lives in San Diego, California. He is the founder of www.theDr.com.

This is the Dr. Veronica's Wellness Revolution. And I have here with me the beautiful Dr. Romie. She's with her nice beautiful smile. You see that? I always strive to bring you wonderful people who can tell you something about your health. You may have a serious illness and you've been to everybody. And we all got wonderful decrees on our walls. But guess what, we are all not the same. And one of the concerns in life today is that those of us who have education and training and higher levels of knowledge are getting usurped by people who are out there being personable. And so Dr. Romie and I have talked about this. We're going to show you about what us highly-educated doctors can do on air and what we do behind the scenes to get wonderful results in our clients. And so you can go on the Biggest Loser and follow people like Jillian. And Jillian is wonderful at what she does but she cannot tell you about the hormones in the neurotransmitters and what to do about the Barrett's esophagus and the ulcerative colitis, and why you're still fat. Maybe you didn't balance all those pieces that you need to balance. It's not about just diet and exercise, it's a little bit more. And so let me tell you about Dr. Romie. I want you to be able to find her, on Twitter too. Dr. Romie is a neurologist that blends both Western and Eastern philosophies. And she's been through a serious medical illness. We're going to talk about that. You think us doctors don't know what you've gone through and yes we do. Because we've been shipped all around to the best people too and then we try to manager our care and mess it up even more a little bit. But let's talk about, what else? Neurologist with additional board certification in integrative medicine. So she has all the key points here. And we've seen her in places like giving TED Talks, on the Huffington Post, on Fox Business, all over the place. You know us media types we are all over the place. But we are all over the place is to give you goo d information. And good information sells, but when it comes time to select your practitioner, that you select somebody who really knows what they're doing. If you want to stay part of that sick care system under your insurance, it's a sick care system only, you know nothing that is not medically necessary will be covered under your secure system. And did you know that prevention of disease and lifestyle factors that keep you alive are considered medically necessary? You need to invest in your health. And so I'm here to give you information with doctors like Dr. Romie so that you can make more informed decisions so that you can live a better, stronger, life. And this is what we're doing. Dr. Romie, welcome to the Wellness Revolution. Dr. Romie: Veronica, thank you. It is so wonderful to connect with you virtually. I have been following your work on Twitter. I'm always elated when I find another sister doctor that speaks my language. Thank you for having me on and it's an honor to meet all of your viewers. Dr. Veronica: Thank you so much. I want to get a little bit of background of your story. You are a neurologist but you've gone into integrative medicine. I'm an ophthalmologist and I've gone into the functional wellness area also which includes all the integrative type approach. Dr. Romie: They're one and the same, yeah. Dr. Veronica: How did you get from neurology to integrative medicine? Dr. Romie: Veronica, I'll tell you my background. My dad's originally from India, my mother originally from Pakistan. So I can say the concepts of Eastern medicine and spirituality were always passed on especially by elders in the family. But what unfortunately happens when you start training in the Western medical system a lot of that gets poo pooed especially the issues of taking spirituality from science, some of the more natural ways of eating, etc. And so it kind of just put that in the back burner and really enjoyed my career for almost 15 years as a neurologist specializing in epilepsy. I was doing cutting edge research, looking at how women's hormones affect women with epilepsy and migraines, etc. But the problem was with all those accolades I got to be real. I did not know how to manage my own stress. Doctors are not alone but I was working a hundred hour work weeks trying to juggle patient care, research, teaching medical students, and no sleep because neurology is a high emergency kind of prone specialty so I was chronically sleep deprived. And my go-to medicine was chocolate. I am not lying. And I'm not talking just a little bit here and there. The hormone imbalance, the sleep deprivation, in four years I went up four dress sizes. Dr. Veronica: Wow, okay. Dr. Romie: And I knew something was really wrong but the worst part was aside from the weight gain and losing my personality and not getting more anxious all the time, I was progressively having difficulty swallowing, and it kept getting written off as, "Oh, you're type A personality. You're a neurologist. It's only heartburn. Give up the chocolate. So now you're pissing me off because you're telling me to give up the chocolate and you're naming me a type A personality, and nothing is helping me. Well, it turned out I have a rare disorder called achalasia. And because I didn't know how to manage my stress, and all the bad eating and the lack it became so severe that it became life-threatening. And I needed to have surgery. That changed everything because in those silent moments post-op I realized, when I went back to the meditation and the yoga that I thought was just a hobby I was emotionally feeling better. And the chest pain I was having would go away. Originally I thought the whole thing was in my head. I thought, "Oh my goodness, they didn't teach us this in medical school. Someone's going to think I'm crazy when I say I can meditate to make my chest pain feel better." And so I started to travel around the world and go back to the roots of who my people were and learn about yoga techniques all over the world, meditation, Ayurveda. And I realized there is a solid amount of medical, scientific evidence here in the west talking about how they helped. And you know this Veronica as a doctor practicing functional medicine. But majority of our colleagues don't know this and I don't fault them because we're not taught this in medical school in our residency training. Dr. Veronica: No, we are not. You went back to your roots let's say and found that what was in your roots, Ayurvedic medicine, which includes the mind and the spirit was more helpful to you than Western medicine. But before we talk about that I want to talk about this chocolate. Would you say that you were addicted to chocolate? Dr. Romie: I say it now, and everybody who's heard me speak knows this, #chocolateismedicine. Tweet Dr. Veronica and Dr. Romie when you're listening to this podcast if you believe chocolate is medicine. But at that time I was addicted. And you and I both know that the addiction center and the Dopamine reward center gets lit up with the sugar and the chocolate. Now I have it in much more controlled measures, dark chocolate. But I'm human. You put me on a red eye flight from a speaking engagement, I'm tired, I'll eat a little bit more than one once of dark chocolate. I'm still admitting I'm human. Dr. Veronica: I just wanted to ask that question because a lot of people don't understand that the food that they're reaching for a lot of times when they feel they can't control and they say, "Yes, I can. I can just stop." It's really an addiction centered where all the rest of the addictions are centered in the brain with neurochemistry going on. And in order to get rid of the addiction, the eating disorder, the chocolate, the cigarettes, the sex, the gambling, all that type of stuff, you have to balance your neurotransmitters in your brain. And a lot of times that can be balanced through three things. One is making eating changes. The second is targeted supplements. The third is learning to manage your own stress. Dr. Romie: Mindfulness, meditation, yoga are scientifically been proven. We can re-train the brain to be rewired away from our addiction. But it takes practice. And I think it takes from deep within your spirit a wanting and a knowing. So if somebody outside of you is saying you have a food addiction, a sugar addiction, a chocolate addiction, and you're trying to change it from a place of guilt and shame, or because you're forced to then I really think the spirit is not going to align somewhere deep within you. You individually, when you come to terms with this is not serving me. I want to change this habit, and you set that intention, then absolutely there are the tools and functional and integrative medicine, balancing hormones, and neurotransmitters, and learning mindfulness based techniques to do all this. And neuroscience research shows you can actually re-train your brain to crave healthy foods in less than six months. Dr. Veronica: I think it happens in less than six months. I can say with my clients it happens with two or three weeks. Dr. Romie: Excellent. Dr. Veronica: You make a few changes, and then within two to three weeks they say, "This wasn't as hard as I thought and I actually like things." I thought I would never like [Unintelligible 00:10:29] within a few weeks." When do you decide I do want to change? First, you have to get to that point. And you have to admit also that somebody might know a little bit more than you know. Tell me about that part of your journey. Because you had to get to the point, you're a high travelling doctor. You trained in great places. You do the research. You're the one telling everybody else what's going on. How did you get to the place where you said, "You know what, maybe that little monk sitting out there knows a little bit probably." How did you get to that place? Dr. Romie: Veronica, I think when you get to where I am at my age or a point in life everyone I meet has had what I call that sentinel event. It could be a health crisis that I had, a divorce, a loss of a job. You just kind of realize I'm not living my life purpose. It's just something deep within you that changes. And it comes then with an external thing in life and return to where's the answer. I started with chocolate or buying shoes and realize I'm not happy. And the yoga and the meditation was almost an accident, a hobby on the side. And I really feel this is, is that when the student is ready the teacher will appear, one of Rami's famous sayings. And it is so true. First understand that I'm not on this podcast dismissing neuroscience, I am grateful for the solid foundation in neurology, neuroscience, neuropsychology that I have. I really feel true health is bringing a balance of both. And that's what's missing in the Western medical system. Because we still at the Center of Natural and Integrative Medicine here in Orlando prescribe medication and run tests when we need to. We're also helping people change a foundation of their hormones and their nutrition and all of those other things and promoting wellness. Remember, one, there's always a balance. To go to your question of how did I realize that monk had some wisdom I think it was just... I don't want to even call it accident, it was my time in life. I was at such a low point. When I went into surgery, and they already have the discussion with me, like god forbid this is cancer. You may end up disabled. What are all these plans? I got past this depression over my life could be over. I went into even a deeper place going, "I'm not living my truth. Who am I? This is not me. I am not happy. I really hit that low spot. And it was sitting in meditation first in my own home and prayer that I realized I need to find my truth, my purpose, myself. Really, the initial yoga retreats and meditation retreats were to heal myself. And then I realized if my chest pain and my anxiety symptoms were getting better, and I'm rewired to feel happy now I want to teach this to other people. It's my responsibility as a doctor, as a healer. Just like you feel passionately about your functional medicine knowledge. I think that's when I realized that there has to be a way to bring both together. And right now I'm a woman on a mission. I want people to have a happy brain, so you can have a happy life. Dr. Veronica: Talk about happy brain. I go around and I have several colleagues. We go around telling people how stress affects the body. Now, here I am sitting with you, the brain scientist. And you talk about stress and its effects on health. Give us a very good, down to earth discussion on how stress is probably the number one piece that you need to be concerned about over what diet you're eating and what supplement you're taking. Dr. Romie: Amen. Thank you so much. First of all when I speak around the country to this issue people think stress is about what's going on on the outside. "I'm in a toxic marriage. I don't like my job." It's how we react to these things. And so if you introduce an external stressor there's this area called the amygdala in your brain. I think of it as the airport traffic control center of your brain. It's modulating what you think, what you feel, your memories, and it's this relay path. Imagine if you're stressed out, think of one the busiest airport, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, what happens if their airport traffic control center shuts down? Mass chaos, right? That's exactly what's happening in the brain when you're under chronic stress. It's like all systems shut down and the bare minimum is running to keep your heart rate going, your blood pressure, but even then it's pumping even harder. Your heart rate goes up. You're high blood pressure. And what that really means is the control for the rest of your body. Every organ system is now whack. And so when you come to the doctor and you say, "I'm having hot flashes. I'm too young to be going into menopause. I can't get rid of this belly fat and I've been on every diet. In fact I've been juicing for six weeks and nothing has happened. Heartburn, tingling in the hands and feet, chronic headaches, depression." From the head to the toe, we can list 50 different symptoms that arise between hormones, your immune system, your mood, your gut, irritable bowel, all when you're stress response is off. Because there's this cascade of stress hormones that get released. Just think it's havoc. There's a hurricane going on through your body and we need to get that inflammation under control. And that's what I am so passionate, and we'll get to this next to say that meditation is truly medicine for the mind. Dr. Veronica: It absolutely is. And it's been well studied now and we see people who can control their body functions. But here we are in America where we are the drive-thru nation, and we would like everything quickly. Explain this to me from a neurological standpoint. Help us understand ourselves a little bit more. Why is it so hard from a brain perspective for us to grasp something different? And so people come and they keep doing that Einstein insanity, the same thing over and over again. People will watch this podcast, they'll say, "Okay, I got it." And then they'll go read a book and continue to fail. And they won't grasp that they really have to do something different, and how we learn to do something different. Somebody's got to show it to us. We can't read it on university of Google. We can't watch it on Dr. YouTube. Why is it so hard for our brain to grasp that? Dr. Romie: Here it is Veronica. I have used it as the theory of the "I should be meditating. I wish I could meditate. I would meditate if I have the time." Anytime our mind is saying should, would, could, it's ego-driven. From a mindfulness point of view you feel like you have to do something because somebody told you, or meditation is trending now, or I really dig Dr. Veronica and Dr. Romie so I'm going to give it a try. I really want you to quiet down and talk to your spirit. And if there's something deep within you that knows there's something deeper going on that's causing my hormones to be out of balance, I know there's something deeper going on and why I can't lose weight, or why I'm depressed even if I'm on medications, I can't sleep at night. If there's something in you knowing you want to change then I'm here to introduce a path. And here's the thing about mindfulness. I have no attachment to outcome. I give you this knowledge and so does Dr. Veronica with love. But if it's not your time to come to a path of meditation right now I have no judgment. We're just here planting the seed. And at some point my intention is that you will give meditation a try. And this is why. When we don't have our mind, which is think of our mental, emotional processing, our body, our spirit, and alignment, and we go off balance that's how disease happens, or that larger thing. What is the number one most Googled phrase? "How do I find my life purpose?" Dr. Veronica: I didn't know that. Dr. Romie: Yeah, that is. And that's like your spirit is off because we you think you're doing what society expects you to, right? Society expected me to become a doctor. I have parents, "[Unintelligible 00:18:57], we have one doctor and you will become our doctor." And then I thought to be happy I need to buy some more designer shoes, because in those days the girls in Sex and the City were all the rage. And I was doing what was expected of me, not what my spirit really wanted. And I promise you, sitting down in meditation this is where all these came for me. And you can find that health and mentation, and your body, my food sugar cravings have subsided. I know I'm not taking good care of myself on my chocolate cravings, you know, start going out of whack. I know my body now. And I give myself compassion. I'm human still. It'll happen, right? Dr. Veronica: Let's talk about meditation versus prayer. Practice is like meditation and yoga versus religion, and I'm going to tell you what my understanding is. And then I want you to add into that. Dr. Romie: Absolutely. Dr. Veronica: I'm from a black American background and we are church-y and religious so we have a blessed day. When we go to church do you want to tell me how they're trying to kill you and send you to heaven with the food that they feed you after church, and get all the toxic things that are going on there. And so people say, "Why don't you go to the church anymore?" Because I like to live a little bit longer. That's going off and so people will be like, click, we're getting rid of Dr. Veronica for saying that. Dr. Romie: No. I think every culture has this Veronica. The Indian culture is no different. If we're having five people over for dinner we cook enough food and a lot of it's fattening for 20. And so I think there's cultures all over the world where food is used to celebrate any emotion, good day, bad day. But to go back to your original question about how religion is different I always this. First of all I'm a big advocate if it feels right for you to attend your spiritual service and community research study show Americans are happier if they are part of any type of religious spiritual community and attend services regularly. And if you look at that study that came out of University of Texas in Austin that it didn't matter what religion you were it was whatever spoke to you. So one is... Dr. Veronica: It doesn't matter what religion it is as long as it speaks to you. I just wanted to know everything... Dr. Romie: And it is. And from the path... Dr. Veronica: I'm going to answer it. I want to say that there's a lot of paths out there... there's so many paths out there because there's so many people on the earth. Dr. Romie: Well said. And for me as a spiritual teacher and healer is that there are many paths to one destination. And that destination is one, the creator, God, Jesus, Buddha, spirit, however people see that it is all one. So the prayer is offering thanks to God, talking to God, praising God, asking God for help for yourself, for others. Meditation is sitting in quiet time and hearing what God or the universe has to say back to you. That is the difference. Dr. Veronica: I feel that in the American culture we're good at begging God for what we want. That's what we do usually because we got to get... Dr. Romie: Been there. Dr. Veronica: But as far as just sitting and listening and observing what's going around when you're not sitting in prayer, that God uses the universe, the creator of all that is uses to give you signals. I think we're totally awful at picking up those signals, either sitting quietly and listening or just noticing that, "Hey, you know what, I just happen to click on this podcast and Dr. Romie said something that resonates with me." Dr. Romie: Yeah, thank you. I think we think we're awful at it and I'm a bad meditator because we're so judgmental in this society. Either you're a good person, a bad person, you get an A, you get an F. There is no such thing as passing or failing meditation. Meditation is just sitting and being what happens, number one. So there's no right or wrong way to meditate. Just sit and be present. Here's the other thing. People think, "I'm not a medical intuitive like Dr. Romie. I can't figure this out. Or that's all spiritual woo woo stuff." No, it's not that. You know what I often tell my corporate clients and everyone can relate? When you meditate and spirit is speaking to you that's your gut instinct or your intuition. Think of all the parents that are listening, something in your gut instinct has told your child is in danger. Or I think of my corporate clients, they say, "I was interviewing a candidate. Their resume was perfect. But just something inside of me said they're not going to be a right fit for the company." And that's when we're silent and listening to intuition. Then when all the "yeah, buts" and we start rationalizing coming in that's the monkey mind coming back in and fear. Go with the gut instinct. And as you sit and quiet in meditation everybody has this ability to connect to spirit intuition. It's what I teach my clients to do and it's how they get to a path of health. Because to go back to what you were saying earlier in this podcast the addictions, the eating, the shopping, the gambling, the losing time on social media, that's mind-numbing activity that we're doing. Mindful activity is like "I'm going to stop, and be present, and listen to what Dr. Veronica and Dr. Romie are saying. And I'm going to feel into my body and just allow what needs to come to me in this moment to come." It's that simple. And how do you do it? Just by consciously taking a breath. You want to do it together Dr. Veronica? Dr. Veronica: Wait. I have to ask you a question. Because if people say, "Yeah, this meditation... I don't want to hear about it. There's no science behind it and so I don't want to talk about it." Now, that's why I had to put that out there because there is science behind this. You make very good faces. Tell us about some of the science behind meditation that says we as doctors should now be writing prescription to meditation, to yoga class, to tai-chi, to something else that's out there that's outside of a pill. Dr. Romie: I agree. It was so well said. I'm on a mission to get mindfulness into meditation just like you are medicine. I'm sorry Dr. Veronica. Here is the truth. This literature date back to the 1940's, to Harvard Medical School where Dr. Walter Cannon discovered the stress response that I told you about earlier in the 1970's. Dr. Herbert Benson also at Harvard Medical School started to say, "How do we shut off that airport traffic control tower, that stress response that's causing havoc in our body and our brain?" It's through relaxation. Since the 1970's we've had a wealth of literature showing that meditation, scientific data in medical journals around the world that are considered the most elite medical journals showing meditation will lower blood pressure, calm down the heart rate, heal depression, heal anxiety, reduce frequency of migraine headaches, cure insomnia, the list goes on and on and on. It's wealth is there and anybody can come to my website, drromie.com. I'm constantly updating it and showing it. The literature is there I just think unfortunately the health care system is like the Titanic, very slow to turn even though they know the iceberg is right there. And it's going to take time to get all of this into the curriculum. But now integrative medicine is a board certification. And 62 medical schools at this time have integrative medicine departments in their medical schools. It's slowly coming about. Number one killer for men and women in this country, you know what it is Dr. Veronica, heart disease. Dr. Veronica: And which means you're killing yourself. Dr. Romie: We're killing ourselves. And the American Heart Association actually recommends meditation as one of the recommended therapies for controlling high blood pressure. Dr. Veronica: Why is it so hard to get this word out there? Why? Dr. Romie: I'm not going to give up. I hold hope. And I think people like you and I having this discussion, saying, "Hey, here are a couple of women who dedicated their entire lives to studying to being doctors and practicing medicine talking about it." I give accolades to who I consider the visionary in this field, Dr. Deepak Chopra. He's been talking about this for over 30 years in all of his books. And now we see it's getting out there slowly. The fact that I get called upon regularly to teach Fortune 500 companies gives me hope that the word is getting out there. That using mindfulness-based techniques such as meditation helped to calm us down, promote health, promote productivity, a healthy brain, a happy brain. I really feel that we're getting there. The fact that we can have this discussion today, and this discussion was not a part of the system when I was in residency training back in 1999 really speaks to it. Here we are, two women on a mission and I know there's a lot more people that are listening today and I will always continue to have hope that we can spread a positive message about health and wellness. Dr. Veronica: Wonderful. I have to just share something that you will appreciate and my audience will appreciate. Because you talk about, "We're not going to talk about medication because I'm a Western-trained doctor. I'm going to leave that behind." And so in my life and career now my audience knows and some other people may know the doctor community doesn't like it all that much but I tell people almost before I tell them I'm a doctor, I'm a medical intuitive. I'm very clairvoyant. I can see past lives and I can hook very well together what's going on, the stressors, the emotional and spiritual. And it's not always in this life. I have to share this with you just because I think you'll find this interesting. My name is Veronica. As you know one of my past lives, Veronica, true image, on the road to Calvary, the true image, a woman who placed a veil on the face of Jesus. At the time we don't know if the woman was named Veronica and she didn't know necessarily what was going on. And so Veronica wasn't necessarily the name of the woman, it meant she got this image and that's where the name came from. Named after a Catholic, that's me. However, in one of my past lives I was there. And part of that past life was after I saw this man on the road, I had no idea who he was, who says to me after I wiped his face off, keep healing the people. Dr. Romie: Amen. Dr. Veronica: I went out and founded a big clinic at that point in time and it was all women who came and worked in this clinic. And people came from far places to be able to get healings. And I know you were there at that clinic with. When I meet people I can see something. Dr. Romie: Namaste sister. The spirit in me just honors the spirit in you and that's so beautiful. Thank you for sharing that. It's giving me... Dr. Veronica: I just wanted to share. I was looking and I was like... Dr. Romie: Thank you for that gift. Dr. Veronica: I know her soul from. Let me just say something else. We call ourselves healers but what we actually are is we're the witnesses to other people's healing. We bring forth our knowledge. And so we formed traditional medical training but our souls have traveled in other healing professions. Which is why at this point we're bringing it all together. I needed to be an eye surgeon to have credibility here today in America, graduate with honors, this, that, and the other thing. You needed to be the neurologist, the practitioner, this, that, and the other thing. But that side of you that is resonating most now is the side that says to meditate. The side that resonates with my audience is the side that says, "You got to connect the spiritual and physical together, and when I do readings for people." Keep doing what you're doing. Dr. Romie: Amen to you too. Dr. Veronica: drromie.com. I honor you. I am so happy you came and that you said yes. Dr. Romie: Honored to be here. This is fun. We could do this all day. So anytime, let's reconnect. Thank you for having me. Dr. Veronica: We hope that we'll be able to work together in the same space physically at some point to help people. Thank you so much for being on Dr. Veronica's Wellness Revolution. Dr. Romie: It's been an honor Dr. Veronica. Keep spreading the love out there sister. Keep spreading the love. Dr. Veronica: Thank you. Female VO: Thank you for listening to the Wellness Revolution Podcast. If you want to hear more on how to bring wellness into your life visit drveronica.com. Dr. Veronica: Thanks again for joining for another episode of Dr. Veronica's Wellness Revolution. We're going to talk today. I want to jump right into this. I want to have enough time to be able to talk to this gentleman who is a guru. The gentleman I have with me today is Dr. Thomas O'Bryan. He is originally a doctor of chiropractic medicine, but you know what I've found? I feel really silly sometimes because I feel like I went to school before medical school with the chiropractors and I was getting really good grades and they weren't doing as well. And I felt like all these people they're not so smart at going into chiropractor. Then I realized on the back half of my career that I was the dumb one and they're the smart one and I better learn from them. So those of us who were the conventional smart doctors have now kind of thrown away a lot of what we learned. We know about the body and all that, and jumped in the pool with our colleagues because we're all colleagues out to help people get well who were the chiropractors of natural path and nutritionists. And we all collectively are out there getting the word out on how you can heal your own body. Dr. Thomas O'Bryan has a new book out there, The Autoimmune Fix. I see so many people every day who say, "I've been told I have autoimmune disease and they haven't quite given it a name but I have autoimmune disease." The Autoimmune Fix talks about this but also talks about what's been going on in the health care system. What's been going on or not going on when you'd go to your doctor and here's the latest and greenest. And we also have a surprise coming up on some information that you can get where you can go and hear the world experts in autoimmune disease. Dr. Thomas O'Bryan, welcome to Dr. Veronica's Wellness Revolution. Dr. Thomas: Thank you so much. It's a pleasure to be with you. Thank you. Dr. Veronica: First define for us what it's meant by autoimmune disease? Because as I told you and I said in the intro I get a lot of people who said, "I've been told I have autoimmune." The big diagnosis these days is, "I have Hashimoto's." Every other person has Hashimoto's. "Oh, you have an autoimmune disease too. Autoimmune disease, give us the definition. Dr. Thomas: Sure. Your immune system is the armed forces in your body. It's the army, the Air Force, the Marines, the Coast Guard, the Navy. It's there to protect you. And it's all we have to protect us. And you have exactly the same immune system that your ancestors had thousands of years ago. We haven't genetically changed. What was it that our immune system was designed to fight? Parasites, bugs, viruses, molds, and fungus. That's it. There was no Polysorbate 80, or red dye number 3, or Bisphenol A, or mercury in the fish. There weren’t any of the toxins that we're supposed to every day. So our immune system is the same as our ancestors, so it's built to protect us from parasites, bugs, viruses, molds, and fungus. There is no way for it to adapt. When you get exposed to Bisphenol A for example, which is the chemical that softens plastic like water bottles, or pop bottles, or soft contact lenses, or credit card receipts have Bisphenol A. There is just millions and millions of pounds of this stuff being dumped every year here. But when you're exposed to Bisphenol A this chemical gets into your body and it binds on to your cells. It grabs to on to proteins inside your body like an estrogen cell or a testicular cell. Now the immune system that's there to protect you from bugs, parasites, viruses, molds, and fungus has to attach this molecule that got in there that's not supposed to be there. "This is an invader. What is this thing?" Your immune system attacks this Bisphenol molecule or lead molecule if you have lead poisoning, where mercury molecule, and you create this inflammation as the immune system is trying to destroy this invader. And the inflammation has collateral damage which damages your own cell that the Bisphenol A grabbed on to. And now your immune system has just damaged your cell. When the immune system attacks yourself it's called an autoimmune mechanism. It's the immune system attacking cells. In the example I just gave you we make antibodies every day to ourself. There's a normal reference range for thyroid antibodies and brain antibodies. There's a normal range, why? Because your immune system is the garbage collector. It's got to get rid of the old and damaged cells, the ones that are breaking down or just worn out to make room for new cells to be built. You have a whole new body every 7 years. We regenerate every cell in our body. But to make room for cells to regenerate you've got to get rid of the old and damaged ones. There's a normal level of thyroid antibodies. It's normal. But when you have a chemical binding on to the thyroid for this example, the chemical might be chlorine or it could be Bisphenol A binding to a thyroid cell, and your immune system says, "What is this stuff? That's not good for me. I better attack it. Your immune system attacks that cell and causes the inflammation that damages the thyroid that the Bisphenol A's grabbed on to. Now the antibodies that your body makes to get rid of old thyroid cells, it has to make some more antibodies to get rid of the damaged thyroid Bisphenol A cell, because the thyroid cell's been damaged you got to get rid of it. So you make some extra antibodies to your thyroid. That's not a problem. But you're exposed to Bisphenol A every day. One hundred percent of the infants born today have Bisphenol A in their urine, 100% of them, because mom has it. Mom's toxic with this stuff, right? It binds on to your cells. And so every day you're exposed to this stuff, and then your body makes more antibodies to your thyroid to get rid of the damaged thyroid cell that the Bisphenol A was grabbing on to. And you make more thyroid cells. And if you did a blood test you'd see you had a high thyroid antibody levels and you make more thyroid antibodies. Until one day this thyroid antibody production becomes self-perpetuating. It's got a life of its own. Now you develop the autoimmune disease, so you're on the autoimmune spectrum with elevated antibodies, but now it moves into an autoimmune disease because you've killed off enough thyroid cells because of the elevated antibodies, the thyroid can't function very well anymore. That's the autoimmune disease. Mrs. Patient, you pull at a chain, the chain always breaks at the weakest link. It's at one end, the middle, the other end, your heart, your brain, your liver, your kidneys, wherever your genetic weak link is that's where the chain's going to break when you pull too hard. Inflammation is the pull on the chain. That's why we here about anti-inflammatory lifestyles. It's that you want to live as much of an anti-inflammatory lifestyle with all that that means. And your show talks about that a lot, about anti-inflammatory lifestyles, so that you don't have that link of the chain break and get an autoimmune disease. What's pulling on the chain? What's pulling on the chain is the gasoline or the kerosene that you're getting in your body, if it's air pollution or if it's food you're eating that aren't good for you. The question is it a kidney or a brain cell, is it gasoline or kerosene? When you want to start fixing these problems you have to ask the questions, "Where is my immune system attacking right now and why is my immune system attacking there?" That's the way you uncover what the mechanism is that's causing the diseases that we have. Dr. Veronica: Talk a little bit about thyroid because I think all of us that are in the functional medicine wellness arena, the thyroid people come in because they just seem for whatever reason they're the most miserable... There's other miserable people, but the thyroid people seem to be miserable and go seek their help. Why thyroid and why mostly women, although there's a lot of men now prop up with it. Dr. Thomas: Yeah, but the ratio of women to men with Hashimoto's is 9:1. It's much more prevalent in women. There's a number of reasons for that. The first reason is receptor sites are catcher's mitts. The pitcher throws the ball to the catcher. You have receptor sites on the outside of your cells facing the bloodstream. So as the blood's going by it goes past these receptor sites. Hormones get inside the cell to do whatever they're supposed to do by going through the receptor site. Estrogen in your bloodstream only goes into an estrogen receptor site. It won't go into a thyroid receptor site. And it goes into the estrogen receptor site, it opens the door and the estrogen goes inside the cell and the body will do what it's going to do. Insulin won't go into an estrogen receptor site, it won't go into a thyroid receptor site. It only goes into an insulin receptor site. All the hormones have specific receptor sites. There are chemicals that we're exposed to now every day, never before in the history of humanity but now every day. And there are three chemicals known to compete on thyroid receptor sites. Now, back up for a minute. There's only two substances for which there are receptor sites on every cell of your body. No, it's not testosterone, no not estrogen, no not insulin, the only substances for which there are receptor sites on every cell of your body are vitamin D... That's why vitamin D is so important for us because every cell needs it, and thyroid hormone. Because your thyroid hormone is the thermostat on the wall in your house. At night you turn the thermostat down so the furnace goes down. It's colder in the house, so that you sleep and you save fuel. In the morning it automatically turns back on before you get up, and so it warms up the house but you save fuel during the night. Thyroid hormone controls the thermostat. That's called your metabolism and how hot your cells burn, how many calories you burn, that's your thyroid hormone. Every cell needs control as to how hot it should burn, that's what thyroid hormone does. Thyroid hormones in the bloodstream, and it goes past the thyroid receptor site and it goes right into it. It opens the door and the thyroid hormone goes into the cell. As you know many people will feel like they've got thyroid symptoms. They come in and the doctor does a blood test and sees that their thyroid hormone levels are normal but they've got thyroid symptoms so they write a prescription for thyroid hormone. And we're shot gunning thyroid hormone into someone that has normal levels because it's going to help feel a little better. How is it possible that their thyroid hormone levels are normal but a blood test that many doctors do is called TSH and it's a measure in the brain telling the thyroid how much hormone to make. TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. How come the TSH can be a little high but the thyroid hormone levels are normal? And you see that all the time in practice. We all see that. How does that happen? It's because the thyroid hormone is not getting into the cell, it's in the bloodstream. Your bloodstream's just a highway. There's lots of traffic on the highway so you do a blood test and you're looking for are there Chevrolet's on the highway. Is there a thyroid hormone on the highway. There's enough hormone but it's not getting into the cell, so the brain says, "I need more thyroid hormone in these cells." The TSH goes up to say, "Make more hormone, make hormone." But you've got plenty of hormones. And doctor shot gunned with synthetic hormone and people will feel a little bit better. It doesn't fix them but they feel a little better. How come the thyroid hormone is not getting into the cell? Because there are three chemicals that compete and will go into thyroid hormone receptor sites. But when they go into thyroid hormone receptor sites they don't open the door. They just sit there. The pitcher throws a fastball to the catcher but the catcher's got three baseballs in the mitt. And so the fastball just bounces out. The thyroid hormone just keeps going down the bloodstream, it can't get in. What are the chemicals that compete in thyroid receptor sites? The most common one... Mrs. Patient, you're in an elevator in a hotel. The elevator doors open. Can you tell right away the swimming pools on that floor? Oh yeah. They smell it. But everybody else in the elevator can't smell it. But they smell it. Why do they smell it? Because they have a chlorine sensitivity. Their detox capabilities are not breaking down the chlorine, so the chlorine is sitting in the receptor sites of the thyroid hormone. So the thyroid hormone is going by, it can't get into the cell. The thyroid hormone keeps going by, and yet the brain says, "I need more hormone. I need more hormone," and it's chlorine. It's a very common competitor for thyroid receptor sites. Those women, especially the women, cold hands and feet, sometimes they wear socks to bed, or your husband says you got really cold feet. You can't get up in the morning. You wish you had 20 more minutes in bed. Can't lose that last 5 pounds even if you don't eat for a couple of days. Bowels are sluggish, emotions are kind of sluggish, brain's sluggish, you kind of feel a little depressed, all signs of a sluggish thyroid. Your thyroid hormone levels are normal but your doctor gives you thyroid hormone anyway because we know it's going to help a little bit. And they haven't had the chance to read about this competitive inhibition of chlorine into the thyroid receptor sites. That's a very common mechanism for thyroid dysfunction. How does that relate in terms of autoimmunity? Dr. Veronica: Let me just interrupt. Because you said there are three things, and you mentioned the chlorine, but tell people the other two that go along with chlorine just because people are going to start connecting the dots and say, "That could be me." Dr. Thomas: You won't like this. Fluoride is very, very common. It's a very common thyroid inhibitor substance. It's in your toothpaste, it's in your mouthwash, it's in your drinking water and it competes on thyroid receptor sites. And the result is your thyroid hormone doesn't work as well as supposed to. You gain weight, you feel sluggish, sometimes you can pack on an extra 20-30 pounds over five years that it just creeps up little by little by little. Fluoride is the second one. The third one is bromide. So it's chlorine, fluoride, and bromide. Bromide is in baked goods. A lot of bromide is used in baked goods. Those are the three chemicals that will compete on thyroid receptor sites. And they don't breakdown, they just stay there. Dr. Veronica: Okay. That's chemicals. I know you're an expert on another food that everybody loves and when you tell them they have to give it up they want to murder you practically because they're addicted. Talk about that food. You don't have to talk to me about... Dr. Thomas: Unfortunately it's the most common food in America today. It's 132.5 pounds per person per year that we're eating. That's wheat. You have toast for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, a pasta for dinner, croutons on your salad, a cookie or a muffin, and it goes on a day, after a week, after a month, after year, after year. Harvard's published another study last year. Hollon and his team published a study and they showed that every single human when they eat wheat gets intestinal permeability. The slang term is leaky gut. And that's the gateway into the development of autoimmune diseases that we'll talk about a little bit later, but that's the gateway. And every single person, every time they eat wheat, not just once in a while, every time. And their language was all humans develop intestinal permeability. Anyone that's watching this interview, if you're a human, I think most of you are, that means every time you eat wheat you get tears in your lining in your gut. It's called pathogenic intestinal permeability. Even for those that don't feel bad. Those that feel bad when they eat wheat they're the blessed ones. Because you can't argue with them, they know when they eat it they get sick. But the ones where the weak link in the chain is their brain they don't want to associate the pasta they had last night with the brain fog they've got today. They just don't want to associate it, or with seizures. In the Journal of Gastroenterology children with drug resistant seizures, that means that they've been to at least two specialists and they've tried at least three drugs before they can get the classification of drug resistant seizures, 50% of those children go into complete remission on a wheat-free diet. Why don't our neurologists know this? Because it's in the gastroenterology journal, and neurologists don't read gastroenterology journals, they read neurology journals. So they just don't know this. Wheat can affect any tissue of your body. I'm going to give you an example of how it affects the thyroid. When you eat wheat, Mrs. Patient. Proteins are like a pearl necklace, hydrochloric acid made in your stomach undoes the clasp of the pearl necklace. Now you have a string of pearls. Our digestive enzymes are supposed to act like scissors to break the pearl necklace into smaller clumps of pearls, then smaller clumps, and smaller clumps, and smaller clumps. Until they get broken down into each pearl of the pearl necklace. That's called an amino acid. And the amino acids go right through the walls of the intestines, and then your body uses those as building blocks to make a new muscle, or a new bone, or a new nerve hormones called neurotransmitters that your body uses the amino acids. Your intestines are 20-25 feet long. It starts at the mouth and goes to the other end. It's one long tube. It kind of winds around in your abdomen. It twists around quite a bit, but it's one long tube. If you could take a doughnut and stretch a doughnut straight down and look down the doughnut it's one tube. When you swallow food it's not in your body yet, it's still in the tube. It's got to go through the walls to get into the bloodstream and go everywhere else in your body. But there's a cheesecloth that lines the intestines so that only the single pearls of the pearl necklace can fit through the cheesecloth to get into the bloodstream, only the amino acids. The problem with wheat is that no human can breakdown the pearl necklace in each pearl of the pearl necklace. The best we can do is break it into clumps of pearls. There's a 33-pearl clump, a 17-pearl clump, an 11-pearl clump. And these clumps of pearls are gasoline and the fire in the intestines. They cause inflammation. And it's the inflammation that tears the cheesecloth. When you tear the cheesecloth now larger clunks of the pearl necklace of any food can go through the permeability into the bloodstream before there's been enough time for the digestive enzymes to break that food going down the track until it's small enough to get through. Does that make sense? Dr. Veronica: Yeah. Dr. Thomas: You got these clumps of pearls going through into the bloodstream. They're called macro molecules, big molecules. And your immune system says, "What's this? This is not good for me. I better fight this. If you had prime rib for dinner and you chew it three or four times instead of the 15-20 that you should... You chew a couple of times and swallow it down, we shovel more than we chew and you shovel it down you got this clump of stringy meat that's kind of hard to break down. And the enzymes are trying to cut off each pearl of the pearl necklace but it takes a while. That's why you got 20 feet of intestines for the scissors to work on that. So it's going down in the first part of the intestines now, but there are tears in the cheesecloth. So these macro molecules of prime rib get into the bloodstream. Your immune systems says, "Whoa, I better fight this." Now you make antibodies to beef, and you're allergic to beef, or to bananas, or to chicken, or to potatoes, or to cantaloupe. And the doctor that does the 90-food panel to see what foods a person is sensitive to, and it comes back with 20-25 foods and the patient goes, "Oh my god, that's everything I eat." Of course it is, because your body is trying to protect you. You don't shut down the immune system, you stop the tears of the cheesecloth. So you have to find out why is the cheesecloth tearing. And when you find out why the cheesecloth is tearing then 6 months to a year later you check again the 90 foods, now you're sensitive to two or three and not 20. That's the mechanism in the development of intestinal permeability, the leaky gut. Let's tie that now to the thyroid. How does this trigger an autoimmune thyroid disease? When this macro molecule of beef gets into the bloodstream and your immune system says, "Whoa, what's this?" The brain says, "You General, you now are General Beef. Take care of this." General Beef builds an assembly line. The assembly line starts producing soldiers. They're called antibodies. The soldiers are trained to go after beef, that's all they do. They're in the bloodstream looking for beef. And when they see beef clumps they fire their chemical bullets to destroy the beef clumps. Remember your bloodstream's just a highway. There's no lanes of traffic. Everything's bouncing around in there. It's going in the same direction but it's bouncing around. Think of the antibodies like Arnold Schwarzenegger and he's got his head out of the big Humvee. He's got those dark glasses on. He's got a big submachine gun. "Over there." And he's firing these chemical bullets at beef because he's been trained to go after beef. The beef macro molecule may be 15 amino acids long because it hadn't had enough time to be broken down into each pearl of the pearl necklace. So there's 15 amino acids there and Arnold has been trained to go after what anything that looks like that 15 amino acids. I'm going to sat AA, B, C, D, but it really is 15 letters long in this example. Let's say Arnold is going after wheat because wheat got in, it tears the cheesecloth, it gets in as a macro molecule. Your immune system makes antibodies to wheat. I said beef to start with but I'm going to talk about wheat now. Let's say Arnold's looking for AA, B, C, D. Bouncing around in the bloodstream looking for AA, B, C, D. He's got these dark glasses on. The surface of your thyroid facing the bloodstream is made up of proteins and fats. That's what the surface is made of facing the bloodstream. Proteins are made up of amino acids. There are hundreds of amino acids long, the surface of the proteins of the thyroid, hundreds of amino acids long. But part of the thyroid includes AA, B, C, D. Arnold that's looking for wheat, AA, B, C, D, he's like, "Oh look, over there." And he fires his chemical bullets at the thyroid to damage the thyroid cell because it's got AA, B, C, D. That's called molecular mimicry. And it's a big problem for people today, they just don't know it. It's a big problem as to why autoimmune disease is so prevalent. Arnold starts firing his chemical bullet at the thyroid damaging the thyroid cell. Remember you have a normal amount of thyroid cells but now you have to make a few extra because there's more damaged thyroid cells than normal. That's after having toast for breakfast. But now you have a sandwich for lunch. More Arnold, more damage to the thyroid, AA, B, C, D, if that's the weak link in your chain. If it's your brain Arnold goes after your brain with molecular mimicry. If it's your kidneys Arnold goes after your kidneys with molecular mimicry. It just depends on what the weak link is in your chain. With wheat it doesn't matter because AA, B, C, D is very common to the structure of the human body. It's a component of... If you think of proteins like it's big, long brick wall, many colors of bricks in there, but there's this pattern. Any time you see that pattern, "Oh look it's there. Oh look it's over too. Oh, it's there too. And that's AA, B, C, D in our bodies. It's very common in our bodies. So whoever the weak link is in your chain that's where Arnold's going to go. And then you have to make more antibodies to your thyroid until this antibody production to your thyroid becomes self-perpetuating. Now you're on the autoimmune spectrum, killing off your thyroid in this example or your thyroid, killing off cells, until eventually you've killed off so many cells now you're starting to get cold hands and feet, or it's hard to wake up in the morning. Now your thyroid's not working so well for you. You go to a doctor and they take your thyroid hormone. The hormone levels are normal but you're not functioning very well. And they don't check to look for the autoimmunity that's causing all the inflammation in your thyroid and killing off the cells in your thyroid. That's the autoimmune spectrum. Dr. Veronica: Okay. First of all I love your analogies. They're just so beautiful. Thank you. I'm into this story and I'm just like... When you've heard the story before and explained in the medical health and all the lingo with all the stuff behind it it's like, "I've heard about that." But with the Arnold Schwarzenegger behind it with glasses it's like... Dr. Thomas: Yeah, it helps. Dr. Veronica: Thank you so much for that. I would've jumped over because that's a beautiful explanation. Now you're talking about the autoimmune fix and we talked a little bit before we came on about type 1 diabetes which people think, you just got it. There's nothing you can do about it. And also Alzheimer's, you just get old and you just get it. There's nothing you can do. You got the tangles in your brain. You're going to get it. Talk a bit about can we fix this. Because most people think, "I'm a victim. I just got it. There's nothing I could do about it. I got the pill. I keep going to the doctor and gets adjusted. I feel miserable. This is just my luck in life. My family had it. My mom was like this. Too bad. Oh well." But that's not true. Dr. Thomas: No. That's not true at all. I was just looking for something. I can't find them quickly so I'll just skip that. No one gets Alzheimer's in their 60's or 70's. It's a decades long process, slowly killing off brain cells. Until you've killed off enough brain cells that the system doesn't work very well anymore just like your thyroid. Dr. Dale Bredesen is at UCLA. He runs the Buck Institute at UCLA. That's the Alzheimer's Research Center. He published a paper in November of 2014 showing complete reversal of Alzheimer's in 9 out of 10 people within 5 years at UCLA. They reversed it within 5 years. How did he do it? There's a 34-point checklist. "They have this. They have this. Do they have this? Do they have this?" Top of the list, wheat sensitivity. Next, dairy sensitivity. Because AA, B, C, D is so very common with the brain when you have a sensitivity to wheat. When I give my lectures to doctors, there's 200 doctors in the room how many know we're suspecting of a sensitivity to wheat? Let me see a show of hands? And I say, "Hold your hands high for a minute please," and they do. I say, "Look around the room," and it's about 80% of the room. Then I'll say, "How many of you know or suspect if you have an inadvertent exposure to wheat it seems to affect your brain? Let me see your hands again? Come on, hold them up." And about 50%-60% of those people raise their hand again. And I said look around the room. This is a talk to doctors, health care practitioners. This is not a celiac group. This is your practice doctors. This is how often it's in your practice. "How many of you are finding it this often?" And maybe there'll be one person that raises her hand. In other words in clinical practice six to seven out of ten people will test positive if you do the right test, looking for a sensitivity to wheat. And of that number the most common system affected for molecular mimicry AA, B, C, D is the brain. Most common for most people it affects the brain. You've got Arnold firing at your brain causing inflammation in the brain, that's pulling on the chain. And eventually one day you say, "I'm getting old. I don't remember the way I used to. Haha..." "Really? How old are you?" "I'm 38." No, that's not supposed to happen. No, that's not normal, you're getting older. No, it's a brain that's on fire. You've got inflammation in your brain. Why? I don't know why. Let's find out. But you're on the autoimmune spectrum, and that's what this book is about. The Autoimmune Fix just came out two weeks ago. What it's about is to understand this big picture concept. Everybody wants a cure. May I be gentle and say this to your listeners. Wake up. There's no such thing as a cure. There's no magic pill that fixes your diabetes. Wake up. A cure means you don't have the symptoms anymore. You have no markers of the symptoms like blood test or urine test, and you can do whatever you want. Remission means you don't have the symptoms anymore. There is no markers of the symptoms, urine or blood test. And as long as you live the lifestyle that got you feeling better you're going to stay healthy. There's no cure. You want to read about a cure for diabetes? Go to YouTube and type in Type 2 diabetes and raw food diets. And you'll see the videos of African-American post-menopausal women which is a very high-risk group for diabetes, you'll see a video of them. They go on a raw food diet for 30 days and you see the doctors talk about their blood tests, and this is unbelievable, their diabetes is completely gone. Their cholesterol's come down 85 points. I'm taking them off their cholesterol medication. You see the doctors saying this. The most potent thing you can do for your health is what's at the end of your fork. That's it. It's like, wake up people, wake up. And the reason I'm so direct about this is because for the first time in the history of human species, for the very first time the New England Journal of Medicine tells us today that children born today are going to get sick at an earlier age than their parents. They're going to get diagnosed with diseases at an earlier age than their parents, and they're going to die at an earlier age than when their parent's died. For the first time in the history of the human species. This has never happened before. We're going down. Now, the statistics are very clear, our health care system is one of the worst. The U.S. is ranked second from the bottom in quality of health care at the World Health Organization, yet we spend more for health than anywhere else on the planet. It's in pharma's big interest to keep us dumbed down and not understanding any of this. That's why I spent a year with Betrayal, The Autoimmune Disease Solution They're Not Telling You. When you guys wake up to this common sense stuff that's in here and that's in Betrayal you're just going to start asking different questions. And when you ask different questions your doctors are being demanded upon to get more answers. Because the things that I write about in this book just make common sense. Stop throwing gasoline on the fire. Everybody knows that diseases are inflammatory. Alright, stop throwing gasoline on the fire. "How do I do that?" Well, you have to learn. And so it's going to take a while to learn. There's no cure that you take this pill and you're fine. There's no cure. There is remission. And you can have a wonderfully vibrant, dynamic life you can. But we have to learn how to ask the right kind of questions. Dr. Veronica: You mentioned Betrayal, I think so many people feel betrayed by the health care system, betrayed by their doctors, betrayed by the government, society, just betrayed by everything. We talk about Betrayal and we're going to talk about how people can get access to Betrayal and learn. Dr. Thomas: I've traveled the world, literally. For the last few I put 165,000 air miles now in this last year. Lisbon, Barcelona, Leipzig, Germany, three times in London, Dublin, Sao Paolo, all over the world, interviewing world experts, the godfathers and godmothers of autoimmunity. And they know all of this and it's shocking when you hear them talk about it. They've know about this for years these kinds of concepts, but no one's carrying the message out and putting it together. We put it all together. It's a seven-part series online, everything's free. It's about an hour a day for seven days. And you can register for it here with your website, so people can click on it and register and they can watch Betrayal. They're going to hear from the experts. You're going to hear from Dr. Marta Vives Pi in Barcelona, Spain who is reversing type 1 diabetes with diet and nutrition, regenerating beta cells of the pancreas. So your body starts making insulin again. What we've been told it's impossible. No, it's not. Read her papers. Here's the evidence. It works. It's simple. It's not a drug, and it works. You're going to read Prof. Yehuda Shoenfeld, the godfather of predictive autoimmunity. His book is there on the shelf, Vaccines and Autoimmunity. It just came out. Dr. Shoenfeld, to get a sense of who this guy is, 28 of the PhD students who got their PhD's under him, many more than that, but 28 of them share departments of immunology in med schools and hospitals around the world. This is the godfather. I interviewed him three times. And you hear him say, "Dr. O'Bryan, I am very much in favor of vaccinations. They have saved millions of lives. However, if the person carries the gene HLA-DRB1, and 30% of the population does, they are very sensitive to having an acute reaction to the adjuvants in vaccine. Thus, it is of wisdom to perhaps be cautious in administering the vaccines. Perhaps a smaller time scale of administration, not seven in one day, not three in one day to these infants that have a weakened, not developed immune system yet. So you give one and you wait two weeks. You give another one. Sean tells all four vaccinations but he's saying for these patients that are HLA-DRB1 you got to wake up. You can't throw this toxic poison in them because their bodies can't handle it that well. Other bodies may be able to handle it okay. So it's not saying don't vaccinate, he's just saying vaccinate with caution if they have that weak link in their chain. That's the kind of stuff you're going to hear from these experts. It's just such useful information and it saves lives. It's going to save thousands and thousands of lives. I want everyone to watch this. It's all free. Because if you watch it you're going to ask different questions of your doctor. Dr. Veronica: I just got to share because we're just meeting for the first time a little bit before the podcast of how I personally felt betrayed by my medical education. I also felt betrayed in my health care. I realized that I was sensitive to certain things because my sons, one got depressed and one got bipolar, and we figured out that they were sensitive to wheat and soy. One had thyroid symptoms major. Dr. Thomas: AA, B, C, D. Dr. Veronica: The doctor came to me who was my [Unintelligible 00:38:56] Dr. Veronica who's a chiropractic at... "Come here mom. Let me test you." And then what do you know, I'm sensitive. I'm not eating tons of these food so I would get six sometimes and say, "What's going on. I don't even know what happened?" And all of a sudden it answered questions for me. And the other thing that I will say is as an African-American I used to feel, "That's a white people disease." And I realized it's not a white people disease. And probably everybody in my family is suffering from these things and oh my god we better wake up. My mother and my father has diabetes. I'm an eye surgeon by training. My grandmother went blind from diabetes. This is this betrayal that you're talking about needs to get out there into the whole world. So when people go to my Facebook page, to my website, even if it's after the date don't think that you still can have access to it because the world needs to see this. Dr. Thomas O'Bryan I thank you for your work, your book The Autoimmune Fix. For those of you who like to read go get the book. You need it on your shelves so you can pick it up and read it over and over again, because it takes a while to digest this. Dr. Thomas: May I say something about the book? Dr. Veronica: Yes. Dr. Thomas: Here's the thing on the book. Right now it's on Amazon for 16 bucks. Amazon is selling it at a loss because it's getting more traffic. More people are coming. And then when you're on Amazon you're likely to buy something else, so that's their philosophy. But it's 16 bucks. If I make The New York Times Best Seller list that means I get invitations. I'm now a candidate for Ellen, Oz, Bill Maher, all these shows where I can carry this message out even further. For 16 bucks I promise if you're not happy I'll give you a refund. You just send me a note and I'll give you a refund. I'm very proud of it. It's 30 years of work. But help me carry this message out. Help me if you would by getting the book. There's no profit in this. You make a couple of bucks a book. This is not for that. This is really to carry the message out to wake the world up because our kids are dying younger than their parents, and that's what this is about. So help me and watch Betrayal. Tell your friends about Betrayal. Help us carry the message out there so we can reach a million people with this. Dr. Veronica: Yay, and I'm going to help you reach those million people with the followers of Dr. Veronica and all my posting on social media. Dr. O'Bryan, again, with much gratitude for your work and your time, those 165,000 miles to get Betrayal put together so we all could figure out what we need to do to heal ourselves. Thank you so much. Dr. Thomas: Thank you. Female VO: Thank you for listening to The Wellness Revolution Podcast. If you want to hear more on how to bring wellness into your life visit drveronica.com. Gluten is a hot topic in the health world. There are those who staunchly believe that only those with celiac disease should avoid it, while others claim that even a small amount can be harmful. In this episode, Dr. Tom O’Bryan sheds some light on this topic. Dr. O’Bryan is one of the leading experts on celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity as well as a functional medicine practitioner specializing in chronic illness. I’m on the road this week, so this interview is conducted by Olivia from Wellness-Media.com and is a playback (with permissions) of this interview from last year’s Wellness Family Summit. We Talk About: Is gluten really that bad or can people who don’t have celiac disease safely eat it? Long term effects of gluten consumption What intestinal permeability is and how it relates to gluten sensitivity How gluten (and other foods) can enter the bloodstream and cause autoimmune problems How celiac disease (an autoimmune disease) relates to autoimmune problems How your intestines are like a carpet Why gluten sensitivity can lead to osteoporosis The difference between gluten sensitivity and celiac disease How non-celiac gluten sensitivity can affect your children What are FODMAPs and how to know if you have trouble with them The biggest flaw in most studies Related Resources: Article: Gluten is Not a Food Group Article: How Grains are Killing You Slowly Dr. Tom’s website: TheDr.com Read TranscriptOliva: So, Dr. Tom, thanks so much for taking the time to be here with us today. We’re so happy to have you. Dr. Tom: Thank you very much. It’s a pleasure to be with you. Thank you. Olivia: Good. You are just so knowledgeable about gluten sensitivity, which is a topic that I know many of our viewers are highly interested in. So let’s jump right in. Gluten sensitivity has definitely gotten more mainstream attention lately, but there is still a lot of skepticism and many articles talking about why it can be problematic to avoid gluten and why gluten isn’t that bad. So would you mind talking about your research in this area? Is gluten something that we do need to worry about, or is it okay for most people who don’t have celiac disease? Dr. Tom: Okay, that’s a good way to get right into it. One of the interviewees on The Gluten Summit was Dr. Alessio Fasano, the Chair of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Mass General, Harvard. Dr. Fasano is the world’s leader in looking at gluten and its effect on the gut and the development of something called pathogenic intestinal permeability; leaky gut is the slang term for it. What Dr. Fasano tells us is that no human can digest gluten. No human. I have to back up. Gluten is not bad for you; bad gluten is bad for you. There’s gluten in rice and there’s gluten in corn, there’s gluten in quinoa; gluten is an umbrella term for families of proteins, and it’s the toxic family of proteins in wheat, rye and barley, those glutens are not good for us as humans. The other glutens are fine. So it’s the wrong word to use really in gluten sensitivity. It’s kind of like someone handing you a piece of paper and saying, would you p
