Dr. Tom O'Bryan is a recognized world expert on gluten and its impact on health. He holds five different positions at Harvard studying the role of gluten in overall health. His work has garnered him international recognition and he's a highly sought after speaker on all things gluten.    He joins me today to chat about the dangers of gluten, how it affects overall health, and the role of the gut in various autoimmune disorders. It's amazing to hear him break down complex body processes in an easy to understand way that really drives home the need for ongoing education.    For instance, he notes that our bodies are almost exactly the same at a cellular level as the bodies of our hunter gatherer forefathers. When they would gather food, they trusted their senses of smell and taste to determine if the food they found was still good.    If for some reason the food was spoiled or harbored a bacteria that the acid in their stomachs couldn't kill, the body would fire an immune response. This is the basis for leaky gut. In ideal conditions, the leaky gut is meant as a protective response.    Nowadays however, we are overloading our system and constantly exposing our gut to gluten. Gluten has a very similar protein map to that of bad bugs in food. This means that our gut is constantly fighting against the “bug” that is gluten which leads to chronic leaky gut.    Like I said, this is truly fascinating. You shared I believe four different theories about it and ways to cure it… I would love to start there before we dive into the rest of our discussion. Please share with our listeners in your own words how you got started in your career and got interested specifically on brain health. At the mention of brain health, every listener can identify with losing the keys, or being unable to find the phone… they’re holding. But also, especially with regard to family history of dementia or Alzheimer’s there’s another level of concern. How do you define brain health? Our audience is mostly female 45-65, when it comes to brain health is one gender or age range most susceptible to deterioration, or is there a time when we need to begin paying more attention to our brain health? If I were creating a body-based fitness prescription I would include muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility based on an individual’s status. Of course, we know exercise is also beneficial for the brain. Is there more? something similar for brain health? What are the components of a “brain health prescription?” What do poor sleep or chronic stress even beyond daily stressors– say during a pandemic – do to brain health? What’s your biggest concern about brain health during this moment we’re in? How resilient is the brain? We’re all going through some level of stress right now for our own personal reasons, when this is “over” can the brain bounce back, so-to-speak? He specializes in functional medicine and works to communicate with and educate the public on all sorts of medical issues. In this podcast he addresses ways listeners can boost their immune system amid the worries about the latest strain of the coronavirus.  He reminds listeners of the basic timeline of how the virus hits and discusses the delay from the initial onset of symptoms to the drop to a much worse condition. He explains that this is because the virus can successfully hide in our cells from part of our immune system for a time. He comments that zinc is an effective way to protect our cells in this situation and in general. He also designates vitamin D and quercetin as helpful products to have on hand in addition to zinc and explains why.  He then comments on why testing for antibodies is helpful in knowing the best actions to take and in knowing to what degree one needs to worry when the virus flares again sometime in the fall. The first of a series of four podcasts dedicated to health, healing and auto-immune disease.   Why Digestive Health is So Important?   In this episode, Jenny and I are diving into how to heal your gut, especially when you have a leaky gut. While leaky gut does not have a test on its own, there are several factors that can lead to leaky gut.   First, you need to have an auto-immune gene that triggers an auto-immune condition. Secondly, you could have a biome imbalance in your gut. Third, a poor diet or a diet high in gluten can assist in triggering a leaky gut.    What is Leaky Gut?   Leaky gut is the condition of your gut lining that has extensive tiny permeations. These permeations, or holes in your gut lining, allowing food to travel from your gut into your bloodstream. Uneaten tiny food particles are seen as invaders in your bloodstream and your body will attempt to get rid of these tiny pieces of food, thus causing inflammation in your body. Unless healed, your food will continue to leak out into your gut, which can cause immune system issues.   The inflammation in your digestive tract caused by leaky gut can result in food intolerances and click an auto-immune gene to “on” even if you’ve never had the disease in your life previously.   She also refers to the work of Dr. Tom O’Bryan and his research on autoimmune disease. He’s found that auto-immune diseases will impact you at your weakest link in our chain. Wherever your weakest link, joints, stomach, skin or bones, is where you will see symptoms. This is the main reason auto-immune disorders are hard to diagnose as they show up with different symptoms depending on the individual.   We also chat about resting your gut and why giving your gut a break is extremely important when you are healing your gut. “Think about celiac disease as breaking your digestive system.
