We also talk about GM's outlook on EV profits through 2030, as well as a unique approach to service department efficiency. Tesla's landmark partnership with the Oneida Indian Nation will see the establishment of its first direct sales outlet in Upstate New York. The showroom, set to open in 2025, will boost access to electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in the region, augmenting the push towards green energy solutions.The agreement with the Oneida Indian Nation provides a legal framework for Tesla's expansion into Upstate New York, overcoming the state law that mandates vehicle manufacturers to sell through dealerships.The 25,000-square-foot showroom will be situated in Madison County on Oneida Indian Nation-owned land, significantly enhancing Tesla's reach beyond the New York City area.Tesla will begin delivering pre ordered vehicles from the site right from the casino while the showroom is under constructionGM CEO Mary Barra has stated that she doesn't foresee profitable electric cars in the $30,000 to $40,000 range until the end of the decade or perhaps even later.Barra acknowledged that Tesla currently leads in EV technology, profitability, and scale, but she believes that this lead is not permanent and GM can catch up.She mentioned that EV battery costs are still too high to build profitable mass-market vehicles that sell for $30,000 to $40,000. However, she predicted that EV and combustion vehicle costs will equalize sometime in the latter part of this decade.The article points out that GM is currently selling the Chevy Bolt EV starting at $26,500 and has promised a starting price of around $30,000 for the Equinox EV. The profitability of these models is unclear.Service departments are finding increased efficiency and revenue through an unique approach: book clubs. Around 40% of the employees can get books from an office “library.”They are paid $5-$10 for a short book, and longer books bring more. Early in November, local community leaders held a three-hour meeting to create an action plan to allocate the Opiate Settlement Fund to afflicted individuals. According to reports from the Watauga Democrat, the fund, which was finalized back in February, is part of a $26 billion agreement that aims to provide relief in communities affected by the crisis. Watauga County received $3 million of North Carolina's $750 million fund. The money will be used to support treatment and recovery efforts such as harm reduction. In North Carolina news, an 80-foot red spruce tree from the Pisgah National Forest has been chosen to be displayed in front of the U.S. Capitol. According to WBTV, “Ruby” will be joined by 84 other trees as part of the display at the Capitol and joint base Andrews. Larry Smith was present for Ruby's sendoff and hopes that Ruby can bring the holiday spirit to the nation adding “I'm hoping Ruby can bring a little unity.” The tree will begin a tour of the state before heading up north to D.C. Dozens of people gathered around the truck loaded up with Ruby to take pictures and even sign the vehicle. This will mark 100 years that North Carolina trees have traveled up to the capitol. The annual tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for November 29. In national news, Colgate University is returning a collection of 1,500 culturally significant items which were buried with remains back to the Oneida Indian Nation. According to the Associated Press, the funerary objects were purchased in 1959 from an archaeologist who had collected them from upstate New York. In an interview, Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter said “it's making things right again. It's correcting a wrong.” The repatriation ceremony will be held at Colgate University today. Colgate President Brian W. Casey said the return is a step in the right direction adding “This is important work, and it will continue until we are confident that all sacred items that can be traced back to their rightful owners are returned.” Nationwide, roughly 870,000 Native American artifacts, including human remains, are still in the possession of universities, museums, and other institutions. More than 800,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. But the number of deaths barely seems to register for many. Psychologist Paul Slovic has studied a phenomenon he calls "psychic numbing" for years. And, in response to the pandemic's threat to Indigenous communities, Oneida Indian Nation in central New York unveiled an art installation called "Passage of Peace." Oneida leader Ray Halbritter joins us to discuss.

Her book Tactics for Racial Justice: Building an Antiracist Organization and Community is forthcoming from Routledge on November 30th as part of the Giving Voice to Values series. She represents the Cherokee Nation in its landmark lawsuit against the opioid industry for causing the opioid epidemic on its reservation as well as the Oneida Indian Nation and is helping launch her firm's Tribal Affairs Task Force. Dr. Prince has also done volunteer work creating resources for Native American nations seeking to gain federal recognition and is trained in Native American mediation practices. She earned her bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Dartmouth College, her law degree from Yale Law School, and her master's degree and doctorate from Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Her writing has been published in Indian Country Today, I Am Where I Come From: Native American College Students and Graduates Tell Their Life Stories, and Native American Voices, among other venues. She is an avid fancy shawl dancer, medicine keeper, yogi, and beadworker. In this episode, Shannon discusses how she got into law, her experience in university, and talks about being a matriarch and being a good ancestor. She also talks about her Cherokee background and how her cultural practices have helped her ground herself in her career and life, her experience being the only Black, Indigenous or person of colour in a room, and shares advice to the younger generation on how to get into law. ...
