In this episode, Bill and Elie Mystal, The Nation Magazine's Justice Correspondent, discuss the ongoing chaos and damage caused by the Trump administration and its close ties to Elon Musk including: The firing of prominent Black figures like Joy Reid of MSNBC and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q. Brown Jr., which Mystal argues is part of a broader effort to remove Black voices and influence from the government and media. Concerns about Trump and Musk's disregard for the rule of law, including their apparent willingness to defy court orders and undermine federal agencies and regulations. The lack of meaningful checks on Trump's power, with Mystal arguing the courts and Congress have become ineffective in constraining the executive branch. The broader context of ongoing efforts to roll back Civil Rights progress and return to more overt forms of racism and discrimination under the guise of "merit-based" hiring.Despite the bleak outlook, Mystal maintains a glimmer of hope that the current authoritarian push will ultimately be short-lived, drawing parallels to the fall of other historical regimes that sought to establish long-lasting dictatorships. You can read Mystal at The Nation and pre-order his new book, Bad Law: Ten Popular Laws That are Ruining America at Bookshop.org. Sean Combs, AKA “Puff Daddy”, “P. Diddy” and “Brother Love”, is credited with the development of several big-name hip-hop artists including Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and Usher. But Diddy's own music career is just as impressive, with 11 number-one singles, 14 nominations, and three Grammy awards. In addition to Combs' label, Bad Boy Records, the rap mogul co-founded the network Revolt TV and hosts several businesses under the umbrella company Combs Global. At Forbes' last estimate, Combs had a net worth of roughly $1 billion. On Monday, large teams of law enforcement led by Homeland Security Investigators raided 3 homes belonging to Sean “Diddy” Combs in Los Angeles and Miami as part of a sex trafficking investigation stemming from accusations leveled against Combs in 5 separate lawsuits brought against him. The latest suit filed in February by music producer Rodney ‘Lil-Rod' Jones details frequent drug use, a shooting, and several accounts of sexual assault while working with Combs on “The Love Album.” In the 73-page document, Jones claims that Combs forced him to solicit sex workers and perform sex acts with them as Combs' looked on. Jones also alleges the rapper threw parties he called ‘Freak Offs', during which underage girls and sex workers were given laced drinks and assaulted. Combs' son Justin, producer Stevie J, and associate Brendon Paul, allegedly supplied the women and drugs for the parties. The suit goes on to say that Combs' access to major celebrities, athletes, and even British Royals, such as Prince Harry, gave him and his followers “legitimacy.” Two of Combs' sons, Justin and King Combs, are seen outside in handcuffs while investigators carry evidence out of Combs' $35 million Los Angeles mansion. The two men were later released and seen gathering belongings before leaving the residence. Combs was in the Miami area during the raid and was stopped at Opa Locka airport with family members and friends. Feds seized Combs' phone while a member of his party was arrested on unrelated drug charges. The rapper's current whereabouts are unknown. An appeals court ruled yesterday that Donald Trump can have 10 additional days to pay a reduced $175 million bond to appeal the $464 million civil fraud judgment against him, his adult sons and his company. The Supreme Court today appeared likely to reject a challenge to the abortion pill mifepristone, with a number of justices indicating the lawsuit should be dismissed. The court heard oral arguments on the Biden administration's appeal of lower court rulings that restricted women's access to the pill, including its availability by mail.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Five friends set out from South Carolina to Mexico. Latavia "Tay" McGee , a mom of 6, wanted a tummy tuck. The surgical procedure to remove abdominal fat was scheduled with a doctor in Matamoros, just across the US/Mexico border. One of the friends stayed behind in a Brownsville, Texas hotel room. The woman didn't have the proper documentation to cross the border. The four Americans traveled to Matamoros from Brownsville in a rented white minivan. On February 25, 2022, Johnson & Johnson, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Ltd., McKesson Corp., Cardinal Health, Inc., and Amerisourcebergen Corp. announced that they had agreed to finalize a reported $26 billion settlement to resolve approximately 3,000 lawsuits from state and local governments regarding the opioid abuse crisis. The private plaintiffs' trial firms representing the counties and municipalities filed the first lawsuit in California in 2014. The proposed settlement allocates approximately $2.3 billion for the plaintiffs' attorneys' fees and costs. The most controversial legal issue was whether the defendants' marketing created a “public nuisance.” The companies continue to face claims in Alabama, Washington, West Virginia and Oklahoma, where in November 2021 the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the state's public nuisance statute did not extend to the manufacturing, marketing, and selling of prescription opioids. On November 23, 2021, an Ohio federal jury found CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart pharmacies liable for recklessly distributing opioids in Lake and Trumbull counties in Ohio. Rite Aid and Giant Eagle settled in 2021. U.S. District Court Judge Dan Polster is scheduled to decide damages this spring. Please join us on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at 2:00pm EST/11:00am PST, as John Shu, who has been following the national litigations, will hold a Zoom webinar to update us on the litigations in California, Oklahoma, and Ohio, and discuss their legal and strategic issues. @Passion, People & Purpose #legal #commentator #consulting #podcast Hello Everyone, Tracing Dr. Pearson's career trajectory, the prevailing theme is that she is a natural teacher: in a classroom teaching at a research university, in a courtroom in front of a judge explaining a novel issue, with individual coaching clients who need help solving their own challenges, in an organization identifying the problems leadership and management couldn't recognize let alone the impact it was having on the employee or employees, as well as the risk it posed for the organization, and through public speaking appearances in person, on radio, or on television, Dr. Pearson's passion is helping another person learn or understand something they didn't before, and most importantly, changing their perspective. When she was working on her Doctorate in Education in Organizational Change and Leadership, Dr. Pearson sought an outside expert to sit on her committee, someone who could think about the problem of implicit bias as applied to the profession she was examining. Truth: the expert was a skeptic until they read the first three chapters of Dr. Pearson's dissertation. The expert told both Dr. Pearson and the other members of the dissertation committee, she changed the expert's mind. In this episode I speak with legal commentator David Lat. For more than a decade David has been one of the country's foremost legal commentators and legal bloggers. He started his legal blogging career with the blog Underneath Their Robes where he wrote about the federal judiciary pseudonymously. He then went on to found Above the Law (one the country's most well-known legal media blogs) which he led for more than ten years. After a brief period working in legal recruiting, David recently returned to writing about law and the legal profession full-time with his newsletter Original Jurisdiction (davidlat.substack.com). David started his legal career as a law clerk to Judge Diarmuid F. O'Scannlain (9th Circuit). He then worked as an associate at Wachtell and as an Assistant United States Attorney in New Jersey before shifting to a full-time career writing about the law. In our conversation we discuss the his path to becoming a legal blogger; the importance of finding the intersection of what you like to do, what you are good at, and what your experience makes you uniquely qualified to do; some of his favorite Above the Law stories; and how lawyers can (and should) promote themselves and their work on the internet.
