in this ep we enter into a spiritual death struggle with the standardized test known as RICAS. Jake and Stephanie discuss PARCC, ESSA, Rogue Island's "star rating" system, paragraph formats, competition's effect on education, alfie kohn (again), the opt-out movement, and livejournal. We ask the age-old question: Has anyone here read a book??? DISCLAIMER: Audio clips of esteemed political leaders are edited for comedic effect.
The education system can change top-down, or bottom-up. Author Suzanne DeMallie wrote “Can You Hear Me Now?” – a book about how parents and teachers might change our schools from the bottom-up. She draws on her own experiences in Baltimore County Public Schools as an elementary math teacher from 2011 to 2019, a parent of children in BCPS, and an advocate for sound enhancement technology in classrooms across the country. She also talks about how COVID has affected her opinions on testing, 1-to-1 device policies for elementary schools, and more. This week on New Mexico in Focus, a closer look at Albuquerque’s plan for a public campaign finance voucher system, termed “Democracy Dollars.” Advocates say it’s a way to counteract the influence of money from a few wealthy donors who finance candidates for city elections. Detractors say it’s a misguided effort that would be applied too broadly and unfairly favor organizing committees who would snap up vouchers and give them to candidates. Gene Grant and The Line opinion panel debate New Mexico Public Education Department’s choice of the SAT test to replace the PARCC test as the standardized test benchmark for juniors in the state’s public high schools. The Line also examines the recent decision by faculty of the University of New Mexico to unionize and a resurgence of organized labor in the news. Last on the Line’s agenda of topics is a look at New Mexico’s House and Senate primary races. NMiF also previews its upcoming interview with MALDEF President Thomas Saenz. Acting as general counsel for the group, Saenz has been deeply involved in the Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico lawsuit. In an excerpt of his interview with correspondent Russell Contreras, Saenz examines President Trump’s effort to woo Hispanic voters during his recent visit to New Mexico and in the 2020 election.

State testing is required by both state and federal law. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, better known as PARCC is the state assessment and accountability measure for Illinois students enrolled in a public school district. PARCC assesses the New Illinois Learning Standards and will be administered to grades 3-8 in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Tests are administered so families know how their child is progressing toward college and career readiness and for districts to know if the curriculum they've chosen teach their students to the state learning standards is working, or if they should make adjustments. In Episode 10, Amy Van Hoose, Laura Michael, and Keri Roberts explain the tests, how the district uses them, and how you can help make sure your child is ready.
Maryland State Delegate Christian Miele is aiming to rid Maryland of PARCC tests and has talked with some educators who feel it would be a good move. We speak with the delegate to get more info on what is in the bill. Plus we chat with NBC's Meet The Press Chuck Todd and our own C4 about the proposed meeting pf President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
On the eve the Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies, the morning news team debates on what qualifies as a sport. Also, Jonathan Roland joins the program to discuss why he wants Maryland to rid public education of PARCC.
Mike Andriulli joins us and we're talking about ASCD Empower 2017!
The Common Core standards initiative was launched in 2009 but by the time new tests aligned with those standards were rolled out 4 to 5 years later, there was mounting opposition to using those tests to evaluate teachers and schools. To preserve support for the standards, many states began throwing the assessments overboard. Will abandoning the tests in order to save the standards actually work? In this podcast, EdNext's Marty West talks with Ashley Jochim of the Center for Reinventing Public Education, who is the co-author of "The Politics of the Common Core Assessments: Why states are quitting the PARCC and Smarter Balanced testing consortia." TIDBITS: Like many people, I was very confused about the Common Core. In fact, it's fair to say it was my curiosity about THIS specific topic, the Common Core, that ultimately motivated me to start this podcast. A Mathematica report shows that students’ scores on the existing high school assessment in Massachusetts predict college performance as well as scores on a new test that was recently developed by a consortium of states to align with Common Core standards. Mathematic education policy experts Brian Gill and Ira Nichols-Barrer discuss the national implications of these findings.
This weeks exciting & creative show takes you to OYE 2015. Organizing Youth Engagement is the state’s largest grassroots youth advocacy conference. Since 2009, a coalition of local organizations led by the New Mexico Forum for Youth in Community have come together to plan OYE. There were workshops and trainings all weekend surrounding issues of ethnic studies, police brutality, cultural appropriation, teen suicide, and standardized testing like the PARCC. Tune in to hear their ideas through speech, poem, and song!

We discuss PARCC testing in schools, and Jay dazzles you with a lengthy conversation about apartment furniture. :-)
The Gov. continues to make news out-of-state. During his latest visit to New Hampshire, Governor Christie started talking about his first 100 days in office - - in the White House. He then went on to unveil a presidential platform. Plus, after saying he had “grave concerns” about Common Core in Iowa, many in New Jersey were left puzzling over where the governor stands on the new PARCC test, which is set to be given to students in grades 3 through 11 in March. Tonite we are going to discuss what maybe the "freebies" given to to students in the public education system. Recently, students in the 9nth grade of the Parsippany District were given ipads. One of the reasons behind the iPad initiative is because New Jersey is rolling out the new “Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers,” or PARCC exam, in the fall of 2014. “For the PARCC exam, students will have to take it on a digital device,” said Haines. Because grades 10-12 will not be provided an iPad, those students will still “be taught skills that will help them with PARCC digital testing.” This has some of the parents in the district up in arms.
