If you've crossed the Colorado Street Bridge lately, you may have seen three tall, oddly shaped vertical barriers between the 10-foot high fencing. One of these installations may be the new sight for the bridge in years to come, as the city is considering a proposal to build permanent vertical barriers to prevent people from using the bridge to take their own lives. The bridge has been the backdrop in various films, most notably in Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid" and more recently in 2016 film La La Land. In June 2017, the city of Pasadena erected the temporary fencing along the bridge to prevent people from jumping. Now, the city is looking for a more permanent barrier solution for the bridge to deter suicide attempts. The Department of Public Works contracted Donald MacDonald Architects for the project. The firm also designed the netting for the Golden Gate Bridge. The mock ups are available online for public review until May 31.  Today on AirTalk, we learn the latest developments on the suicide prevention barriers erected along the Colorado Street Bridge. Have any questions? Call us at (626) 893-5722. If you or a loved one are struggling with suicidal thoughts, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255. Kathleen Vallee Stein worked as an advocate for Medicare beneficiaries for many years. She became familiar with the Medicare Hospice benefit and the reluctance on the part of families to consider it. When her father was terminally ill, she experienced first-hand the difficulties families face when confronted with end-of-life issues. The dreaded decision to stop curative care and begin comfort care was monumentally difficult but resulted in a transformative experience for Ms. Stein and her family. She was moved to write a book about it, from a family member’s point of view. Ms. Stein’s opinion pieces have appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Daily News, Pasadena Star-News, Orange County Register, and the Jewish Journal for more than twenty years. She writes about a variety of life experiences, such as caring for aging parents, raising children, and reflections on work, friendship, and nature. Loving Choices, Peaceful Passing: Why My Family Chose Hospice is her first book. Ms. Stein was Manager of the Los Angeles County Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) for the California Department of Aging. She trained volunteer peer counselors in Medicare and related health insurance, provided community education, and advocated for changes in Medicare law to benefit seniors. She was Director of Volunteers at the Aviva Center, a residential treatment facility for abused and neglected adolescent girls. As Director of Volunteer Development for Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, she trained Girl Scout leaders in outdoor skills and troop management. As Park Ranger at Monrovia Canyon Park, she trained and directed a corps of Volunteer Rangers and led local schoolchildren on educational hikes through the canyon. Sohus, a twenty-something resident of San Marino, California, was allegedly murdered in 1985 by con man Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, who has become infamous under his most-known alias, Clark Rockefeller. Rockefeller, the prime suspect in Sohus murder, may have been the last person to see him alive. Nine years after his death, Sohus bones were dug up in the backyard of the home he once shared with his wife Linda, whose whereabouts remain unknown. Rockefeller s 2008 arrest for abducting his daughter put him squarely in the cross-hairs of the decades-old Sohus homicide case. Upon Rockefeller s arrest, Girardot began piecing together the convoluted tale in a series of articles for the Pasadena Star-News. His research resulted in Name Dropper, which reveals inside information about the case Girardot says is the most fantastic he s seen in his 25 years as an investigative reporter. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

Last month, shared-use mobility company Gotcha announced a partnership with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments to bring a regional, 1,000-bike, bike share system to a dozen cities. The bikes will be rolled out this summer. This week, Damien talks to Sean Flood, the CEO of Gotcha. The discussion covers how this contract came to be, a timetable for the rollout and how users will access the system through smart phone apps and a card system similar to TAP. Recently, Flood completed a trip on Gotcha's new electronic tricycles from the home office in Charleston, S.C. to Austin, Texas for South by Southwest as part of their rollout for the new product. You can watch a short video on the trip, by clicking here.  But first, Damien and Kris discuss an article that appeared in the Pasadena-Star News earlier this week that both Pasadena and Alhambra are working to acquire the unconnected "710 stubs" of freeway that are inside their city borders. Currently, the stubs are still owned by Caltrans, but if the cities get control they could implement more creative and beneficial use for the land than underutilized asphalt. During our conversation, we reference a story Kris wrote for Streetsblog in 2013 about a block party that doubled as a rally for freeway expansion. If you're interested in reading this classic-Streetsblog piece, you can find it here. #SGV Connect is supported by Foothill Transit, offering car-free travel throughout the San Gabriel Valley with connections to the new Gold Line Stations across the Foothills and Commuter Express lines traveling into the heart of downtown L.A.
