People from all over the globe competing for the 125 PGA Tour cards Martin Kaymer lost his PGA Tour by not playing a required 15 events splitting time between the European Tour and PGA Tour. Jeff said that Kaymer is out of the playoffs this year but win a major championship Kaymer will be alright moving forward. Jeff mentions that Robert Streb got a huge jump on this season by playing the early events in the fall start of the 2014-2015 Tour start.  Already Rory McIlroy has committed to play in the early events of the upcoming 2015-2016 season. Holly asks Jeff his thoughts on the upcoming FedEx Cup playoffs are there true favorites or will someone come out of the pack like last year?   Holly says that someone with a hot short game might come out on top at Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey this week with the greens being the way they are set up for The Barclays. Jeff said that he likes the rotation for the playoffs among courses and Plainfield is such a great old course.  Matt Kuchar is Jeff's pick to win The Barclays this week.  Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in and starts things off talking about the U.S. Amateur Champion Bryson DeChambeaux who also won the NCAA individual men's title this year. Steve talks about Bryson's idiosyncrasies with his golf equipment.  Holly and Steve also cover the LPGA and Lydia Ko's win and Stacey Lewis' who Steve seems a little snake bitten lately not being able to close out the tournaments. Lewis is playing at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic where the field is a little thin. The 2015 Solheim Cup is in September and Paula Creamer and Brittany Lang were named as the captain's picks by Juli Inkster. He thinks Creamer was picked for experienced and thinks the Americans team looks really well statistically.  Last time the Europeans had the better numbers and ended up upsetting the USA on their home soil. Jeff Shain, Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette in Hilton Head, S.C., call in from beautiful South Carolina to talk about Davis Love III's win and the upcoming FedEx Cup playoffs. The third oldest, longest stretch of time between first and last wins.  His first win was in 1987.  Tiger turns 40 in December. He still moves the needle in the ratings and the Wyndham printed an extra 47,000 tickets after Tiger announced he was playing Wyndham. Tiger did a little analysis of Davis' putting during the week and Davis gave Tiger the feel of Sedgefield Country Club that seemed to help Tiger out this past weekend. Jeff wonders if Tiger had added one more start back in May might he have picked up enough points for him to make the playoffs? Holly mentions the putting hiccups Tiger has lately and the 11th hole when the wheels came off the cart for him with a triple bogey. Three of Dustin Johnson's three wins have been 54-hole wins and Jeff talks about DJ avoiding the clunker back 9 on the final rounds. Jeff mentions that four of the past five winners at the FedEx Cup have come off the pace and those who controlled their own destiny haven't been able to play well at East Lake to win it all. Jordan Spieth has the highest point total that there has ever been going into the FedEx Cup playoffs this year. Jeff Shain likes Spieth and DJ at the top of the leader board again, whereas Robert Streb might be a long shot as well as David Lingmerth. Mike Jamison, Examiner.com and ING, calls in to talk to Holly about the PGA Expo in Las Vegas, that just ended. Cobra has recently introduced their new King Cobra driver. There was a demo day but it's mainly an apparel and fashion show. Tour Edge came out with a new limited edition hybrid with a slip stream sole. Chase 54 introduced a new line of apparel. One cool training aids was the Golf Chute by Chute Trainer that helps with the hip turns and adds distance off the tee using wind resistance in training. Mike said that a unique aspect is that the USA company employs physically challenged in the factory.  Next week is the World Amateur Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The world Am is open to all golfers - 17 years old and above - with a certified USGA handicap or foreign equivalent. Features six competitive divisions.

Emily T Gail Talk Story

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 12, 2015 29:44

Jack Berry, renowned sports writer talks about fellow Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Glenn Johnson who passed away recently and was an important mentor and friend of Emily’s, as he was to many. Mahalo for listening to the talk story or reading the story and nice tribute to Glenn that Jack wrote and I have included below. GLENN By Jack Berry The PGA Tour had Doug Sanders. The European Tour has Ian Poulter. The LPGA has Paula Creamer. But for all out color and pizzazz, we had Glenn Johnson of Grosse Ile. Johnson arrived in Charlevoix for the Michigan Amateur in a Cadillac top down convertible packed with clothing changes for three double round days of match play. That was confidence and that was Glenn Johnson. “I had fun with the clothes. I hated to play (after a morning round) without cleaning up,” Johnson said. “One time a guy asked me why I was always changing colors, why I didn’t wear black or white. I went out that afternoon in red, white, blue, black, everything. He was 2 down after the first two holes. “I liked match play. I enjoyed the psychology, watching the opponent. I had more fun without saying anything,” Johnson said. “I’d look at their grip and they’d be thinking ‘Is something wrong with my grip?’” There was no one like him in Michigan golf and he passed away to the green course in the sky on Dec. 11 at the age of 92. The later years were difficult but there were so many good times, so many matches won and memories like the Michigan sectional qualifying held at Birmingham Country Club for the 1972 United States Open at Pebble Beach. Chuck Thorpe, the confident young brother of the PGA Tour’s Jim Thorpe, and Johnson were tied after regulation. Thorpe, a brash smasher, figured to win on the first hole. A par five. Thorpe didn’t use a tee. He’d stomp his heel into the ground and place the ball on top of the upturned turf. But he only made par and so did Johnson. The second hole was a short par four with the green short of the river, unlike today’s position. It was driveable but Thorpe didn’t drive it, made bogey and Johnson won with a par and was off to Pebble Beach. Johnson played the Monday and Tuesday practice rounds before “immense crowds.” He’d called Arnold Palmer and asked to play with him. Johnson knew Palmer since he played in the prestigious Grosse Ile Invitational in Arnie’s amateur days. After the two Palmer rounds Johnson hooked up with defending Open champion Lee Trevino on Wednesday, his third round with two of golf’s superstars on one of the most famous courses in the world. That was Glenn. Johnson didn’t play golf until after service in World War II as a pilot, teaching men how to fly the B-24 Liberator bomber, and then college at Michigan State. He won nine letters in sports at Grosse Ile High School, had three years in at Michigan State before the military service and returned to play quarterback his senior year. He played against Miami in the Orange Bowl stadium, played against Santa Clara on the West Coast and said that rules permitted only one substitute per quarter so “If you were first string, you played about 50 minutes every game.” Johnson’s father was a captain in Ford’s lake freighter fleet and the family settled on Grosse Ile in 1927. Glenn naturally took to the water and sailed the Port Huron to Mackinac race and was first mate on a winner. He was a lifelong fisherman with a boat docked by his house. He finally connected with golf “because the practice tee was 200 yards from my house” and said he worked hard at it. His short game was especially sharp. “I didn’t hit it that far but I knew where to hit it” and match play was his game. Johnson won five Michigan Amateur championships, second only to six by Chuck Kocsis. When the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame was established, Kocsis was in the first threesome with World Golf Hall of Famer Walter Hagen and Oakland Hills professional Al Watrous. Johnson was in the second threesome with two-time Masters champion Horton Smith and PGA champion Walter Burkemo. Four legendary professionals and two superb amateurs formed the first six members of the Hall of Fame. When Johnson came to golf, he came full force. He played in 43 Michigan Amateurs, at one point won 23 straight matches, qualified to play in 17 United States Golf Association championships, was low amateur in the 1981 Open at Oakland Hills, and won 15 Grosse Ile club championships. As a senior he helped form the Society of Seniors, an organization of the best senior amateurs in the country. He won the Eastern Seniors five times and a North and South Senior. He looked out for young players at Grosse Ile, and Emily Gail, a top junior, said “Glenn was a huge factor in my being encouraged to be a good female athlete. He was a great mentor and friend. I called him a couple weeks ago as I would do a couple times a year to tell him how much I appreciated his encouragement. He helped me learn how to love hitting balls and practice which I still do.” And because Johnson also was a skier, two of Michigan’s best holiday golf tournaments were established. “I skied at Boyne Mountain and became friends with (owner) Everett Kircher. He had a golf course and Labor Day weekend was deadsville. I told him he had all those empty beds and he should start a two man tournament.” Kircher took the advice, made Johnson co-chairman and the Kircher Cup is nearly four decades old with a full field every year. Then Johnson, assisted by the late Bucky Brower, real estate salesman and something of the unofficial mayor of Boyne Country, talked Kircher into starting a tournament in another “deadsville” period, Memorial Day weekend. Now it’s the Nike State Pro-Am. Besides his golf, skiing, boating, and interest in the Red Wings – he had seats right behind the goal in the Olympia Stadium days, Johnson was an accomplished artist. One of his favorite subjects was clowns and one of his paintings is in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame collections of members’ memorabilia. Grosse Ile members and friends of Johnson celebrated his 90th birthday at the club and unveiled an exhibition of his many trophies, medals and awards received over the years. There’s a full length painting of Johnson with trousers as colorful as a tropical garden. “I’ve had a fantastic run,” Johnson said when he was a guest of honor at the 100th Michigan Amateur in 2011 at the Heather course, his favorite, at Boyne Highlands. Fittingly, he was wearing a sweater of many colors.

Dr. Bob says you have to have this core belief ... "If it is to be it has to begin and end with me."   Dr Bob says as players we become obsessed with making a certain score. You have to stay in the moment and focus on the shot that is in front of you. Golfers can check out his Golf Profile, which is cutting-edge web-based technology. World renowned Golf Psychologist Dr. Robert Winters of the David Leadbetter Academy interprets your profile scores and goes one-on-one with you as your personal coach through customized video analysis explaining your scores and offering his personal tips to help you develop more confidence and reach your full potential. Jeff Shain, PGATour.com, calls in to talk to Holly and Rich B about the past weekend's PGA Tour as well as what's ahead. Bubba Watson grumbling with his caddie. Todd also talks about Sean Foley, Tiger's swing coach, and how well Tiger is doing now after all the criticism they both took after leaving Hank Haney. Tiger has 76 PGA Tour wins with four different swings.  Hunter Mahan and Justin Rose also work with Foley. Holly G and Rich B are in the studio talking all things golf. They kick off the show talking about the Tour Championship with Bob Harig, ESPN.com. A lot of different possibilities, except for the top 5 in the standings. If McIlroy, Tiger, Watney, Mickelson or Snedeker wins, then they would win the FedEx Cup. Holly G and Bob talk about how all of the members of the Ryder Cup team are at the Tour Championship.  Bob makes the point that players who are competing in the Ryder Cup tee off on Friday with the same pressure as you would have if you were in a final Sunday. If you are in a Sunday final, you played well enough on the first three days to get into the final. For the Ryder Cup, you start off with that pressure. The three talk about the Tiger vs. Rory rivalry and if Tiger feels any intimidation. Bob likes Phil to win the FedEx Cup. He feels that Phil is playing really well right now and has played well in Atlanta. Holly and Rich are joined by Marty Perlmutter, President of the Leaderboard of Miami, to talk about an upcoming charity golf tournament to benefit the Greater Orlando Children's Miracle Network. The 10th Annual McLane Foodservice Golf Tournament will be Sept 29 at Falcon's Fire. Register at www.mclanecharitygolftournament.net or show up at 7:30 a.m. for an 8:30 tee off. $150 per person. The golf tournament annually raises money for the Children's Miracle Network and the Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando. The scramble golf tournament will include a skills challenge for all players, a live auction, helicopter ball drop and a couple of unique on-course games. All-American at Clemson and on the Walker Cup team. Todd feels that this loss much like McIlroy's in the past will make him a stronger player eventually. Todd Lewis shares his thoughts about Tiger's performance and his attitude or control of his temper at the event. Tiger needs to work on his temper and controlled competitiveness.  The team also talks about Robert Rock's performance and his apparel. Rock doesn't wear a hat or visor but may be not wearing one because of his “great” hair. Might need to rethink his endorsement deal and wear a hat or visor for endorsement opportunity. Todd looks ahead for some of the interesting story lines in 2012.  Tiger, Phil and Jason Day will all unfold each week on The Golf Channel. Bob Harig, ESPN.com, just back from the Abu Dhabi. Even though the climate can be tough, there are lush green golf courses there in the United Arab Emirates.  Tiger received an appearance fee to be there as did several other players. Bob speculates as to whether we as golf fans should ever expect Tiger to get back to the Tiger he was several years ago, especially due to his age. Next up is the Waste Management Open on the PGA Tour and the Qatar Masters and then the Dubai tournament.  Bob Harig shares his thoughts on Phil's play coming into a tournament in his own “backyard.” Jeff Shain, Orlando Sentinel, calls in to wrap up the show.  Lexi Thompson makes her start on the LPGA Tour year.  She is playing at the Gold Coast Tournament upcoming and then the Women's Australian Open.  Jeff shares the composure of Lexi and the great support team, i.e. her parents.  Think that it also helps that her two brothers are competitive golfers. One on the Nationwide and the other brother in college. Jeff talks with Holly G and Rich about Meg Mallon being named the next Solheim Cup captain. Kent Brown is a golf professional whose career and interest in the game spans more than fifty years.  His first coach and teacher was his father, who cut down a wooden-shafted five iron, for Kent, when he was only six.  His love and passion for the game came almost immediately.  Today he is often kidded by his friends as being one-dimensional.  It is however, his total commitment to his sport, and his life-long desire to improve, and help others to improve, that has set him apart as one of the top teachers in the country.  Even though Kent spends most of his time at junior golf tournaments, and teaching juniors, and adults alike; he has never stopped being a student of the game himself.  Kent feels privileged to have had opportunities for personal interaction with many industry leaders, top instructors, and PGA Tour professionals—most notably, Ben Hogan.  He currently serves on the Southern California PGA Advisory Committee. Kent played on his high school golf team before playing on scholarship at Cal State Long Beach, where he was  team captain and number-one player in his junior and senior years. After instructing golf in the US Army, Kent turned professional, and joined the mini-tour ranks.  He played competitive tournament golf for almost three years before accepting a position with the Ben Hogan Company in Ft Worth, Texas. It was there at the Ben Hogan Company, Kent continued his learning from the master. During his fifteen years with the Hogan Company, Kent became acquainted with tour player, and prominent golf instructor, Mac Ogrady.  It was under Mac’s watchful eye that Kent developed as a professional’s professional.  It was two years later, when long time friend, Dr. Tim Somerville, and Kent founded the now, world famous, Professional Golfers Career College, with campuses in Temecula, California, Orlando, Florida, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.  He served as Executive Director of the college for fifteen years, where he also taught Psychology of Golf, gave his students individual golf lessons, and taught them how to teach the game to others. After selling his interest in PGCC in 2005, Kent accepted a position with the International Junior Golf Tour as the West Coast Director.  In this role, he continues to teach and motivate the next generation of young players.   IJGT Quick FactsMission Statement: The mission of the International Junior Golf Tour is to provide exceptional junior golfers with the opportunity to develop and showcase their competitive skills while setting high standards to preserve the traditions and integrity of the game.First National Tournament Conducted: 1995National Headquarters: The IJGT National Headquarters is located on Hilton Head Island, South CarolinaTour Success: A few of the touring professionals that have competed on the IJGT Tour include; ·         Hunter Mahan, ·         Paula Creamer, ·         Morgan Pressel, ·         Rickie FowlerAmateur Success: 2009 Walker Cup Team, Morgan Hoffmann and Rickie FowlerMailing List: 5,408 plus an additional 1,600 from the Mexican Junior Golf FederationRegistered College Coaches: 300Staff: 7 full-time, 6 internsDemographic: Junior golfers range in age from 10 to 19 years old•       44 states and 32 countriesJunior Membership: Approximately 2,000 members annually (89% male / 11% female)Average No. of events played per member: 4.5Season: September – May, International events in June and July•       Summer 2010: 10 events currently being planned in AsiaNumber of Tournaments: 62 open / 5 InvitationalAverage Field Size: 84 players2009/2010 Course Highlights: TPC Sawgrass, Harbour Town, Kiawah Island, Greenbrier ResortAvila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.

During Mike's Course - Mike and Billy discuss some very common phone calls that actually occur everyday at golf courses around the world.  1st-Interview Tiss Dahan,Senior Director of Global Appareladidas Golf PhilosophyGolfers are athletes.adidas Golf makes equipment that drives athletes to performa at the highest levelWe design our equipment to maximize the body’s golf potential. We engineer our equipment with the most innovative technology in the sport. We push our equipment in the very same way athletes push their bodies. We don’t make shoes, shirts or jackets you wear.WE MAKE EQUIPMENT for your bodyIt has been 60 years since Adolf Dassler first put three stripes on a pair of athletic shoes, creating one of the most recognizable athletic brands in the world. The German sportswear company he founded, adidas (an amalgam of his nickname, "Adi," and the first three letters of his last name), marked the 60th anniversary with a special collection of golf apparel, as worn by Sergio Garcia in the U.S. Open this past June 2009.adidas’s exuberant branding reflects the sea change in golf fashion, from classicism to athleticism. Until recent years, golf has shied away from graphic displays on clothing, rooted as the sport is in genteel, country club tradition.adidas has long been torn about using their well-known trademark in an overt way on golf clothing. For many years when the company did put the three-stripe logo on golf shirts, it was only in a tone-on-tone color scheme—blue embroidery on a blue shirt, for instance. It was there but not there.Currently, the company is expanding its branding of other apparel, emphasizing the guiding philosophy of its founder Dassler, who equipped Jesse Owens with his track spikes for the 1936 Olympics. The idea has always been the development of specific performance clothing for each sport —to help athletes do their best. "We believe golf is a sport," said Tiss Dahan, senior director of global apparel for Adidas Golf. "The products we build always respect golf."With adidas technology like ClimaCool, ClimaProof and ClimaLite, all designed to maximize comfort while highlighting your style, you can enjoy the feel of a great day at the course even when you're stuck having a casual day at the office. Men, women and juniors can enjoy Comfort, Style, Technology and Athleticism which are all now blended in the adidas brand and look.Currently featuring the adidas brand on Tour: Sergio Garcia, Kenny Perry, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day.  Mission StatementGolfer Girl Magazine will help to grow the community of female golfers by providing a magazine that is informative, educational, interesting, and wholesome. The content will be inspirational to help girls find inspiration from success of others and educational to learn about golf's history and famous women golfers. The Hooton sisters -Libby 17 years old -Courtney 15 years old and Chloe Belle 12 years, old began- playing golf in 1999 and have been avid players since they started. They love the game and all of its challenges.Every summer, they live and breathe golf and particularly enjoy the wonderful community of friends that they have developed. They love to read about the game, the players, and most of all, the fashions. Unfortunately, there are no known publications that are tailored to the junior audience.Twenty-five percent of all golfers are women. However, through 2003, only 13 percent to 16 percent of junior golfers were girls source: National Golf Foundation . This is an audience that had been underserved by the traditional golf marketers. Until now.Beginning in 2002, younger girl golfers began to have a big impact on the golfing market. Perhaps the biggest movement began when a young Hawaiian resident, Michelle Wie, began playing competitively in adult tournaments at the age of 12. Many have estimated that Wie will have the biggest influence on women s golf ever seen. However, there are also a number of other very young golfers making their mark on professional golf. In 2005, Paula Creamer was the second-highest ranked woman golfer by the time she was 18. Morgan Pressel just missed winning the 2005 women s U.S. Open while still a junior in high school. AJAM (The Adam Jon & Mitch Show)

Tonight on AJAM117: it was our annual Oscar special. Now the very first Oscar special that we had was the highest rated show that we have ever done. So it stands to reason that we at least attempt to have one of these every year. However, this time around we did not talk about the Oscars as much in the Oscar special so it is pretty much becoming like all the rest of our special shows. Anyway, tonight we did mention Paula Creamer winning the Fields open this past weekend. Her first win of the very young year. American Idol has reached the actual interesting part of the competition in my opinion. The part where we actually get to do the judging. We hit on this topic a little bit. As for the rest? I don't need to tell you about it. I was there. If you want to know about it be there. Or go listen to this podcast. That is about as close as you can get. For all you spammers out there our email is ajamshow@gmail.com. Good night folks. We gotta go.
