pWotD Episode 2904: Grand Slam (golf) Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 319,048 views on Monday, 14 April 2025 our article of the day is Grand Slam (golf). In golf, winning all of golf's major championships in the same calendar year constitutes the Grand Slam. In the amateur era, this feat was achieved in 1930 when Bobby Jones won the four major tournaments of that era open to amateurs: the The Amateur Championship, the Open Championship, the United States Open, and the United States Amateur. Modern variations include a Career Grand Slam, which involves winning all of the major tournaments within a player's career. Six golfers have accomplished this: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Rory McIlroy. There is also the Tiger Slam, achieved by winning four consecutive major titles but not in the same calendar year; this variation is named after Woods, the only player to accomplish the feat. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:46 UTC on Tuesday, 15 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Grand Slam (golf) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Ivy.

It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Just going with the big news for October 31 as the National Wrestling Hall of Fame has, quite literally, the honors. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame recently announced its Class of 2024, and it's an illustrious group that has made significant contributions to the sport of wrestling. The class includes Distinguished Members Tadaaki Hatta, Toccara Montgomery, Coleman Scott, and Logan Stieber. These four individuals have had a profound impact on the sport. J.R. Johnson, Darryl Miller, Jonathan Koch and Colonel Steve Banach will also be honored by The Hall.-Tadaaki Hatta, originally from Tokyo, Japan, moved to the United States in 1961 and became an NCAA champion and two-time national champion for Oklahoma State University. Hatta has a storied career in coaching, having been part of the U.S. men's freestyle coaching staff for the Olympics in 1988, 1992, and 1996. He also coached the Japanese Olympic team in 1968 and 1984 and the Mexican Olympic team in 1972. Hatta has been an art teacher, wrestling coach, and trainer at high schools in Ohio for 40 years. His contributions to the sport are immense, and he has been a guiding force in the development of wrestling at both the national and international levels.-Toccara Montgomery is another name that stands out. She is considered one of the most dominant female wrestlers in United States history. Montgomery made history in 2004 as the first Black woman to wrestle for the U.S. in the Olympics. She was a four-time United States Open champion and the Pan Am champion in 2002 and 2003. Montgomery was a two-time national champion for the University of the Cumberlands and has been inducted into multiple halls of fame. She currently serves as an assistant principal and continues to contribute to the sport as a coach.-Coleman Scott won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and was a four-time All-American, finishing his college career as an NCAA champion for Oklahoma State. He was a member of the U.S. National Freestyle Team multiple times and has contributed as a coach at both Oklahoma State and the University of North Carolina. Scott's achievements on the mat are paralleled by his contributions as a coach, nurturing the next generation of wrestling talent.-Logan Stieber is another name that resonates in the wrestling community. He became the first Big Ten Conference wrestler and the fourth wrestler overall to be a four-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion. Stieber led Ohio State to its first wrestling national championship in 2015 and has a World Championship in men's freestyle to his name. He has been an assistant coach for Ohio State since 2021.J.R. Johnson, the Meritorious Official honoree, has officiated at every level in the United States and has been a mentor to younger officials. His dedication to the sport extends beyond the mat, as he also assists with weigh-ins, pairings, and scheduling at tournaments at every level. Johnson's extensive experience, with over 20 NCAA championships, and commitment, make him one of the most respected officials in the wrestling community. He's also a Virginia native, so 2 Up, 2 down. Darryl Miller, the Order of Merit recipient, has been a medical volunteer for USA Wrestling since 1993 and has served at multiple World Championships and Olympic Games. His expertise extends to educational presentations on emergency procedures, skin lesions, and CPR and First Aid for coaches at USA Wrestling clinics. Miller's contributions have been instrumental in ensuring the safety and well-being of athletes at both national and international events.Jonathan Koch, the Medal of Courage recipient, is a living testament to the resilience and fighting spirit that wrestling instills in its athletes. After surviving septic shock and losing parts of all four limbs, he underwent a revolutionary human hand transplant and defied all odds to not only survive but thrive. Koch's journey serves as an inspiring example of the indomitable human spirit, proving that with resilience and determination, one can overcome even the most daunting challenges.Retired United States Army Infantry Colonel Steve Banach, the Outstanding American honoree, served with distinction in the United States Army from 1983 to 2010. His leadership skills, honed on the wrestling mat, were evident in his military service, including deployments to six combat zones and a distinguished career in special operations. Banach's wrestling background has clearly influenced his leadership style, making him a standout figure in both the military and the wrestling communities.-The full rundown of the day's wrestling news can be delivered to your inbox daily, courtesy of Mat Talk Online's Daily Wrestling Newsletter, delivered by Resilite. Hi there! Let's get started!    Topic: Mom Sells Tomatoes as Her Son Seeks Tennis Titles It should have been one of the happiest times of Yu Te Tseng's life. But Tseng, the father of the world's best male junior tennis player, lowered his head and put his right hand to his eyes, trying to stem the flow of tears. He was sitting in a garden at the United States Open in September after his son, Chun Hsin, had won another big match. But while a friend patted him on the back, Tseng needed more than a minute to compose himself and explain his sadness. For years, Tseng has coached his son, 17, who plans to turn professional at a tournament in Hong Kong at the end of the month. For years, father and son have traveled the globe while Chun Hsin, also known as Jason, soared from a working class background in Taipei, Taiwan, to the top of the junior tennis rankings. He tore through the competition in 2018, reaching the final of the Australian Open junior singles tournament in January and winning the French Open junior title in June and Wimbledon's in July. He was also a semifinalist in the U.S. Open boys event, and finished the year as the No. 1 junior. But while he was achieving all that with his father by his side, Tseng's mother remained in Taipei, running the family's small food stand and looking after his 15-year-old brother, Yun Di Tseng. For his mother, Chung Han Tsai, the heavy workload has taken a toll. The family owns a stall at the Lehua night market in Taipei, where they sell tanghulu, a treat made of glazed fruit and tomatoes on a stick. They stay on their feet from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m., with hardly a moment to spare for a break. Tseng first played tennis at age 5 with his father, who likes to be called Ed. Within a few years, Jason had demonstrated unusual talent, and his father discovered that his night job was suddenly an advantage. It enabled him to train his son during the day. On a typical day, Ed Tseng would work at the night market and get to sleep around 2 a.m. He would wake up three and a half hours later for early-morning practices, after which he and his son would return home, shower and prepare for school. The father would then sleep a bit more before rejoining his son for afternoon practice. Then it was back to work with his wife. On some nights, Jason and his brother would make the five-minute walk from their home to join their parents at the market, doing their homework there or pitching in by peeling tomatoes. But Jason's focus and dreams were always on tennis.“In that moment, I don't have a lot of time to go out with friends and do relaxing things,” he said. “I was always working, working. That is how the professional player has to do it.” Jason Tseng said he does not really like the treats his parents sell. He prefers ice cream, although he eliminated it from his training diet. He indulged in his favorite treat twice recently, though: to celebrate winning the French Open and Wimbledon junior titles. Tsai could not make those trips. She remained in Taipei, selling tanghulu. But when Jason plays, Ed sends her updates. In a recent email, he said his wife told him that Jason's victories buoyed her spirit, making her stand stronger in the moment. But the arrangement is no longer tenable with her physical condition. Tsai needs rest to recover, and Ed said this week that in the spring, the family plans to shutter the business. Legally, it cannot be sold, just closed. But now that Jason will be earning some money on tour, the investment in his future may pay off and the financial burden eased. Source article: https://cn.nytimes.com/sports/20181227/chun-hsin-tseng-taiwan/zh-hant/dual/   Next   Topic: Gaming's New Lifestyle:Less Pizza, More Yoga The squats and leg lifts were harder than they looked, and after a few sets, Alfonso Aguirre Rodriguez placed his hands on his knees and attempted to compose himself. In November, Aguirre, a 24-year-old professional video game player from Spain, joined the five-man roster of Origen, a League of Legends team that competes in the game's top European league. The players — all signed in late fall — were told at the time that the team might be run a bit differently from what they were accustomed to. Now here they were, five young men who make their living sitting almost completely still in front of desktop computers, sweating through an hourlong workout in a cramped gym. “I think I'm going to puke my oatmeal,” said Aguirre, who is known in the gaming community as Mithy. “I'm dying.” Some years ago, traditional sports leagues were revolutionized by young analysts wielding computers. The way things had always been done, it turned out, was not always the best way to do things. Now echoes of that transformation have arrived in the growing world of professional e-sports, where gamers are being shepherded toward a new frontier, oddly, by the old, corporeal wisdom of traditional sports. The debate about whether competitive gamers can be considered athletes may never end. In the meantime, though, gamers are increasingly acting like them. Origen is one of two teams owned by Rfrsh Entertainment, an e-sports company based in Copenhagen. Two years ago, the organization hired Kasper Hvidt, a former captain of Denmark's national handball team, to be its sporting director. Hvidt, 43, had no previous exposure to gaming. But that was the point. E-sports in recent years have crept into the mainstream, attracting new fans, new sponsors and new investment. The top professionals now make six-figure salaries and earn even more with endorsements and prize money. And yet, Hvidt observed, their approach to performance remained amateurish. Eating right, sleeping right, exercising, cleaning up for sponsors — these ideas have undergirded traditional sports for generations. In e-sports, they are regarded as almost radical. “They don't look at themselves as physical human beings,” said Hvidt, who won the European handball championship with Denmark in 2008. “It's common sense, in a way. But with them, it was not.” Next   Topic: Why the Philippines Is a Hoops Haven Go to any street corner in the Philippines. Any village. Any beach. Even a church. You're likely to see a basketball jersey. “It's often described as a religion,” Carlo Roy Singson, managing director of NBA Philippines, said in an interview. Indeed, basketball is ingrained in Filipino culture and has been for more than a century. The sport's permeation of a country of about 105 million began in the late 1800s, when Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. A large facet of the introduction of the fledgling game was Christian missionaries, who were part of the YMCA, or Young Men's Christian Association. The game's inventor, Dr. James Naismith, conceived of the sport at what was then known as the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. To take a round object and throw it into a peach hoop, as Naismith pictured it, could be a character-building endeavor. Soon after he invented it, missionaries began spreading it around the world, particularly in the Far East and the Philippines, in U.S.-controlled areas — a kind of sports imperialism. The NBA and its players, recognizing the sport's popularity in the Philippines, have invested time there in recent years. In 2013, the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers played a preseason game there. According to a spokesman for the league, the NBA's Facebook page has 7.3 million followers from the Philippines, the largest of any country outside of the United States. This all began in the early 1900s, when basketball was introduced into schools in the Philippines. In 1913, the first Far Eastern Championship Games — an early version of what is now known as the Asian Games — took place in Manila, featuring several East Asian countries taking part in Olympics-style competitions, including basketball. It was the first of 10 biennial events, before disagreements between the countries disbanded the games. The Philippines won gold in nine of them. The country's population took to the sport en masse. In 1936, its national team made the Olympics and finished fifth. At the 1954 FIBA World Championship, the Philippines won a bronze medal, the best finish for an Asian country. Two decades later, in 1975, the Philippine Basketball Association, Asia's first basketball league, was created. These games kept the sport at the forefront of Filipino culture and helped grow interest throughout the 20th century. Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/341713/web/#2L-15029994L

Please listen in on this very informative INSIDER Podcast. Podcast Transcript: Welcome to the worldwide golf Shops Insider Podcast. Episode 327. Hello everyone Tom Brassell here thanks so much for joining us. Our special guest today joins us courtesy of our friends at Cobra Puma Golf. He is the 2020 United States Open champion, Mr Bryson DeChambeau. Bryson. Thanks so much for joining us. I don't know about you, but I like the way that sounds 2020 US Open champion.  It has a good ring to it. Thank you.  Appreciate  You have me on so with a lot of fun.  I want to talk about the incredible year last year, but question our listeners like to hear is we all fell in love with this game somehow, you know, take us back to you know what you did.  Normally childhood somebody influenced. You talk about that briefly.  Yeah, my dad was a Professional golfer for a little while until he had me and he turned back to being an amateur, but I got to the golf course with him all the time and grew up around the game. Played a bunch of other sports, but we're really drew me into the game was How individualized it was and how you know it was outdoors and then you know it was in nature and love looking at trees and seeing birds and wind and all that.  I just loved nature in general and once I got a little bit older. I started watching golf films and watching Ben Hogan and I washed out part how hard he worked and you know my parents always talked to me about hard work and dedication and whatnot, and I found a similarity there and once I saw his golf swing I just wanted to swing it as good as him and that kind of gave me the golf bug and from then on I've always been trying to pursue.  And you know, excellent as much as possible.  Well, you mentioned Mr Hogan.  Is that where the cap came from?  You got it. That is exactly where it came from.  So yeah, not too bad.  And then once I got to college too, you know at SMU Payne Stewart obviously went there and so it kind of worked out in that fashion too.  So it's a tribute to Hogan and paints it as well.  Let's go back to about.  This time last year, maybe a little past pricing 'cause you starting off a new season there. Everything is going well and then around the first round of The Players Championship our whole world comes unglued. I mean everything stops.  We don't know what safe is if it's safe to go outside if it's safe to hit balls.  Talk about what you did and what you were going through and those next few months, yeah?  It was an interesting time for sure.  I was very blessed to have a gym at home and I had a hitting simulator golf simulator in my house and I really thought, OK, how we're gonna be locked down for a substantial amount of time now.  How can I get some really good practice in.  And how can I do something with my body that will make a difference when I come back out and so from then on I started working out really hard every single day and getting a lot of strength and muscle size and mass.  And over the course of, you know, a few months I was able to change the transform my body, you know.  So once we got back out of quarantine and then Colonial started, it came back a different person with a whole new swing speed.  Yeah, it was kind of like Bryson 2.0 and we saw something totally different. You win at rocket mortgage. And. It was on display talk about that that was that was awesome.  Yeah, that was pretty cool moment for me.  It definitely showed that I could change and transform my body and still win.  Yeah, only only a few people in the course of this game of golf have done that and it was cool to see that and to be able to experience it.

Holly Sonders born on March 03, 1987, in Marysville, Ohio, in the United States of America. Her father, Dan, was an optometrist and her mother was a retired golf champion, no wonder Holly took a liking to the sport. Growing up, her interest in golf was apparent, and she was soon making a name for herself with her exemplary skills in golf. This performance, in turn, managed to earn her a high school scholarship at Marysville High School. For four years, she held the all-district honour and at the same time got the district MVP and the league honour. The young lady had sports blood in her veins, and also managed to shine in basketball and baseball. She attended Michigan State University for her higher education where she pursued a career in journalism and graduated in 2009. It is important to note that throughout her stay in the university, she was notably one of the grade A students. She earned herself numerous awards and honours both in her academics and in golf, where she played a total of 77 rounds. Unfortunately, Sanders was not able to go through with her golf career because of incurring an injury during one of the collegiate golf tournaments. You would think this would shatter her, but you are wrong. The rising golfer did not let the damage pull her back. She had a big dream to work as a journalist in the Golf Channel, but sadly did not manage to get the job immediately due to lack of experience. She, therefore, joined Little Rock as a broadcaster and finally landed a job at Golf Channel later on in 2011. Here, she shined brighter than before. The channel brought shows that further elevated her — The Morning Drive, School of Golf and Playing Lessons with The Pros. In 2013, she covered the online portal Golf Digest. Her great job did not go unnoticed, and she earned herself a spot on FOX TV to cover the United States Open in 2015. In 2016, she was the event's studio host. Sonders hot body might have helped her get placed as the world's most beautiful woman by golf.com in the years 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 consecutively. Emily T Gail Talk Story
Jack Berry remembers Glenn Johnson, fellow Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member

Emily T Gail Talk Story

Jack Berry, renowned sports writer talks about fellow Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Glenn Johnson who passed away recently and was an important mentor and friend of Emily’s, as he was to many. Mahalo for listening to the talk story or reading the story and nice tribute to Glenn that Jack wrote and I have included below. GLENN By Jack Berry The PGA Tour had Doug Sanders. The European Tour has Ian Poulter. The LPGA has Paula Creamer. But for all out color and pizzazz, we had Glenn Johnson of Grosse Ile. Johnson arrived in Charlevoix for the Michigan Amateur in a Cadillac top down convertible packed with clothing changes for three double round days of match play. That was confidence and that was Glenn Johnson. “I had fun with the clothes. I hated to play (after a morning round) without cleaning up,” Johnson said. “One time a guy asked me why I was always changing colors, why I didn’t wear black or white. I went out that afternoon in red, white, blue, black, everything. He was 2 down after the first two holes. “I liked match play. I enjoyed the psychology, watching the opponent. I had more fun without saying anything,” Johnson said. “I’d look at their grip and they’d be thinking ‘Is something wrong with my grip?’” There was no one like him in Michigan golf and he passed away to the green course in the sky on Dec. 11 at the age of 92. The later years were difficult but there were so many good times, so many matches won and memories like the Michigan sectional qualifying held at Birmingham Country Club for the 1972 United States Open at Pebble Beach. Chuck Thorpe, the confident young brother of the PGA Tour’s Jim Thorpe, and Johnson were tied after regulation. Thorpe, a brash smasher, figured to win on the first hole. A par five. Thorpe didn’t use a tee. He’d stomp his heel into the ground and place the ball on top of the upturned turf. But he only made par and so did Johnson. The second hole was a short par four with the green short of the river, unlike today’s position. It was driveable but Thorpe didn’t drive it, made bogey and Johnson won with a par and was off to Pebble Beach. Johnson played the Monday and Tuesday practice rounds before “immense crowds.” He’d called Arnold Palmer and asked to play with him. Johnson knew Palmer since he played in the prestigious Grosse Ile Invitational in Arnie’s amateur days. After the two Palmer rounds Johnson hooked up with defending Open champion Lee Trevino on Wednesday, his third round with two of golf’s superstars on one of the most famous courses in the world. That was Glenn. Johnson didn’t play golf until after service in World War II as a pilot, teaching men how to fly the B-24 Liberator bomber, and then college at Michigan State. He won nine letters in sports at Grosse Ile High School, had three years in at Michigan State before the military service and returned to play quarterback his senior year. He played against Miami in the Orange Bowl stadium, played against Santa Clara on the West Coast and said that rules permitted only one substitute per quarter so “If you were first string, you played about 50 minutes every game.” Johnson’s father was a captain in Ford’s lake freighter fleet and the family settled on Grosse Ile in 1927. Glenn naturally took to the water and sailed the Port Huron to Mackinac race and was first mate on a winner. He was a lifelong fisherman with a boat docked by his house. He finally connected with golf “because the practice tee was 200 yards from my house” and said he worked hard at it. His short game was especially sharp. “I didn’t hit it that far but I knew where to hit it” and match play was his game. Johnson won five Michigan Amateur championships, second only to six by Chuck Kocsis. When the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame was established, Kocsis was in the first threesome with World Golf Hall of Famer Walter Hagen and Oakland Hills professional Al Watrous. Johnson was in the second threesome with two-time Masters champion Horton Smith and PGA champion Walter Burkemo. Four legendary professionals and two superb amateurs formed the first six members of the Hall of Fame. When Johnson came to golf, he came full force. He played in 43 Michigan Amateurs, at one point won 23 straight matches, qualified to play in 17 United States Golf Association championships, was low amateur in the 1981 Open at Oakland Hills, and won 15 Grosse Ile club championships. As a senior he helped form the Society of Seniors, an organization of the best senior amateurs in the country. He won the Eastern Seniors five times and a North and South Senior. He looked out for young players at Grosse Ile, and Emily Gail, a top junior, said “Glenn was a huge factor in my being encouraged to be a good female athlete. He was a great mentor and friend. I called him a couple weeks ago as I would do a couple times a year to tell him how much I appreciated his encouragement. He helped me learn how to love hitting balls and practice which I still do.” And because Johnson also was a skier, two of Michigan’s best holiday golf tournaments were established. “I skied at Boyne Mountain and became friends with (owner) Everett Kircher. He had a golf course and Labor Day weekend was deadsville. I told him he had all those empty beds and he should start a two man tournament.” Kircher took the advice, made Johnson co-chairman and the Kircher Cup is nearly four decades old with a full field every year. Then Johnson, assisted by the late Bucky Brower, real estate salesman and something of the unofficial mayor of Boyne Country, talked Kircher into starting a tournament in another “deadsville” period, Memorial Day weekend. Now it’s the Nike State Pro-Am. Besides his golf, skiing, boating, and interest in the Red Wings – he had seats right behind the goal in the Olympia Stadium days, Johnson was an accomplished artist. One of his favorite subjects was clowns and one of his paintings is in the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame collections of members’ memorabilia. Grosse Ile members and friends of Johnson celebrated his 90th birthday at the club and unveiled an exhibition of his many trophies, medals and awards received over the years. There’s a full length painting of Johnson with trousers as colorful as a tropical garden. “I’ve had a fantastic run,” Johnson said when he was a guest of honor at the 100th Michigan Amateur in 2011 at the Heather course, his favorite, at Boyne Highlands. Fittingly, he was wearing a sweater of many colors.
