Judicial Activism and Nationwide Injunctions: An unprecedented number of nationwide injunctions issued against President Trump within the first two months of his administration, comparing it to the total number issued during the administrations of George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden. It discusses the implications of these injunctions, describing them as an abuse of power and a deliberate attempt to undermine Trump's agenda. We include statements from various officials, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, emphasizing the constitutional crisis posed by these injunctions. Legislative and Judicial Responses: Efforts to address the issue, including a bill co-sponsored by Chuck Grassley and the possibility of impeaching judges who are seen as defying their oath of office. It also discusses the role of the appellate process and the Supreme Court in addressing these nationwide injunctions. USA Fencing and Transathlete Policy: An investigation into USA Fencing's policy on transgender athletes, initiated by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. It details the case of Stephanie Turner, a female fencer who refused to compete against a transgender opponent and was subsequently disqualified from the tournament. The investigation aims to gather information on the policy, the number of transgender athletes competing, and any injuries resulting from these competitions. Mexico's Water Treaty Violation: Mexico's violation of the 1944 Water Treaty, which obligates Mexico to provide water to South Texas. It highlights the impact of this violation on Texas farmers, who are facing severe drought and economic hardship due to the lack of water. We mention efforts by Senator Ted Cruz and President Trump to address the issue and ensure Mexico complies with the treaty. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Deportation of Venezuelan Gang Members: The Supreme Court lifted a judge's order blocking the deportation of suspected Venezuelan gang members to a prison in El Salvador. The Trump administration used the Alien Enemies Act, an 18th-century law, to classify these gang members as part of a hostile government. The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that challenges to deportation must be filed as habeas corpus petitions in the location where the individuals are detained, not as class actions in D.C. Cancellation of Teacher Training Grants: The Supreme Court upheld the cancellation of $600 million in teacher training grants, with $65 million yet to be distributed. The court ruled 5-4 that claims against federal money should be brought in the Court of Federal Claims. This decision was seen as a technical but significant victory against district judges trying to block the Trump administration's agenda. Reinstatement of Federal Employees: The Supreme Court reversed a district judge's order to reinstate 16,000 federal employees fired by the Trump administration. The court ruled 7-2 that the administration had followed proper procedures for the dismissals. This decision was another victory against district judges attempting to halt the Trump administration's actions. Issuance of Social Security Numbers: Nearly 4 million non-citizens were issued Social Security numbers during Joe Biden's presidency. These numbers allowed illegal aliens to access government programs and aid, costing American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) reported that many illegal aliens received Medicaid, driver's licenses, and some even registered to vote. Transgender Athletes in Women's Sports: A female fencer was disqualified for refusing to compete against a transgender opponent. Senator Ted Cruz launched an investigation into USA Fencing's policies, aiming to protect women and girls in sports. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. We open with a little more from yesterday's discussion over Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and her partnering with Rep. Brittany Petterson (D-CO) for the purpose of trying to pass proxy voting for new mom's and dad's. I then spend a lot of time discussing tariffs and acknowledging the short-term pain in favor of the much larger long-term gain. We hear from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and from a self-described Leftist in Batya Ungar-Sargon. We then cut to a Democrat presser trying to throw the Education Secretary under the bus. However, Secretary McMahon comes outside to watch and is literally asked to steal the Democrats presser. The filthy piece of human debris asked a member of the USDA committee on nutrition guidelines if changing diet will lead to weight loss. Incredibly, the answer they give is genetics. This leads me down an interesting, albeit scary, rabbit hole. And, as we are on the topic of HHS agencies, it looks like James O'Keefe strikes again, catching a member of NIH discussing ways to hide from DOGE and how he wants to shoot them. Finally, we end with yet another female athlete who is forced to forfeit a match rather than compete against a male. This just happened in WOMEN'S Team USA Fencing. Dominic Carter discusses the significant political shake-up in the New York City mayoral race as incumbent Mayor Eric Adams announces his run as an independent, bypassing the Democratic primary. This move intensifies the competition, particularly with Andrew Cuomo, and potentially splits the Democratic vote. This new development unexpectedly boosts Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa's chances in the mayoral race. The segment also covers various national issues such as the stock market's reaction to President Trump's tariffs, and the controversy surrounding USA Fencing's disqualification of fencer Stephanie Turner for refusing to compete against a transgender opponent. Throughout, Dominic reiterates his commitment to truthful and unbiased reporting, despite personal relationships with political figures involved. Learn more about your ad choices. Today I have the distinct honor of speaking with one of fencing's most impactful figures and someone who's just been a really great person to get to know in my three years with USA Fencing. It's Don Anthony. Donald is not just a world-class fencer who competed for Team USA at two Senior World Championships; he's also a visionary sports executive, an entrepreneur, and a transformational leader. He's served as President and Chair of USA Fencing, a Vice President of the FIE, and now leads The Ohio State University's fencing program as Head Coach. From discovering fencing at age 7 in Cleveland, to studying engineering at Princeton, to earning his MBA from the Wharton School — all while building a career that spans IBM, entrepreneurial ventures, and influential roles in the fencing world — Don's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Today we have a three-part episode for you: we'll explore his fencing journey, how he balances coaching and leadership roles, and the legacy he's building for future generations of fencers at Ohio State. And as we've been doing here in season of our show, we'll end with five quick questions. --First to 15: The Official Podcast of USA FencingHost: Bryan WendellCover art: Manna CreationsTheme music: Brian Sanyshyn

I'm heading off to the Sports Business Journal's 25th annual celebration tonight (11/22), toasting "40 Under 40" in Sports Marketing, which includes the CEO of USA Fencing, Phil Andrews. So, in homage, and since his triumphant return from the Olympics and Paralympics which took place after this recording, I'm sharing a replay of our Insider Interviews episode, ICYMI! And, if you were living under a rock, know that history was made. I asked Phil for his recap and he said: "We made history at Paris 2024 on and off the piste, sharing the gold medal lead for the first time and an historic all-American final. Back home we had 35,000 people try Fencing over the Games, moved from 12th to 6th in our media share and have seen 12.7% growth in the business post-Games; while we've signed 4 new partners, including a record breaking deal with Italian brand Macron who are seeing the benefits from our expanded presence.” -- Phil Andrews Wow. So, to better understand how niche sports like fencing can not only stay relevant but grow their fanbase, here's Phil Andrews, who I called the British Ted Lasso for bringing a Midas touch to the world of parries and ripostes as CEO. I also encourage you to visit the team News site to really see why Phil is being honored: from promoting the sport to a diverse community to growing sponsorships to innovating ways to increase awareness through sweepstakes and experiential marketing. He is, himself, gold. In advance of the Paris Olympic Games, Phil and I explored how he's applying creative strategies to boost awareness, revenue, and membership in a sport that still takes some explaining. Which he does beautifully. For this audience, he also shares his data-driven approach to attracting sponsors, revealing, "We have to, to be candid, fight dirty a little bit. We don't have the brand of a New York Yankees or even a USA Gymnastics where you're buying brand and eyeballs. But we have data, we have people, and we have a direct road to them." This innovative thinking has led to partnerships with brands like Naked Wines, Avis, and Hilton. Phil even teases an upcoming sponsorship that's perfectly on-point: the "Official Fence of Fencers." Talk about targeted marketing! But it's not all about the money. Phil is passionate about making fencing accessible to all. He discusses USA Fencing's award-winning diversity and inclusion initiatives, including the "Fencing the Gap" program. "The idea of Fencing the Gap is very simple. It's grant funding that we can put towards fencers who otherwise can't afford to play the sport," Phil explains. Get ready for some Olympic-sized insights as Phil breaks down: - The complexities of Olympic sponsorships (it's not as simple as you might think!) vs sponsorships of the NGBs (National Governing Bodies). - How USA Fencing is bringing the Olympic experience to communities across America allowing locals to fence with some greats in 10 cities this summer. - The surprising connection between fencing and the NCAA (hint: it's not just about the sport) - Why listing women first in team announcements is a small but powerful change. Olympic-bound Team USA Fencing As a bonus, listeners get a glimpse into Phil's personal life, including his connection to me (spoiler: we met last year when I discovered we were related by marriage!). Phil even shares why he told Sports Business Journal in his interview as a "40 Under 40" that Insider Interviews is his go-to podcast!: "A lot of what I've done over my career is taking other people's ideas and applying them into Olympic and Paralympic sport. That's how we've done things differently. And so I find it a great way to listen to, as the title suggests, an insider and apply their ideas to what we do." Welcome to episode 158 of Sports Management Podcast. Phil Andrews is the CEO of USA Fencing. For those of you who followed this podcast since the beginning, you might remember Phil from episode 14, then acting as CEO of USA Weightlifting. It was great to have Phil back on the show and we disussed all the things that have happened since the last time. We spoke about: Why he became CEO of USA Fencing How Phil helped grow the overall business already in year one Why fencing is like combat chess The origins of fencing How he builds high performing teams And much more! Ever wonder how niche sports like fencing stay relevant and grow their fanbase? In Epi 23 of Insider Interviews, I chat with Phil Andrews, who I call the British Ted Lasso for bringing a Midas touch to the world of parries and ripostes as CEO of USA Fencing. Fresh from transforming USA Weightlifting, Phil is now wielding his marketing saber to make fencing a "thing" with record-setting results. In time to understand the sport in advance of the Paris Olympic Games, Phil and I explore how he's applying creative strategies to boost awareness, revenue, and membership in a sport that still takes some explaining. And so I find it a great way to listen to, as the title suggests, an insider and apply their ideas to what we do." This "40 under 40" picked Insider Interviews as #1! Whether you're a marketing pro looking for fresh ideas, a sports enthusiast curious about the business behind the games, or just someone who appreciates a good underdog story, this episode delivers gold medal-worthy insights. Phil Andrews is credited with making multiple changes for the better over a decade of service at USA Weightlifting, including the past six years as CEO, and overseeing an elite team that at the Tokyo Olympics took home its first Olympic silver in women's weightlifting. Among his challenges at the governing body was a deep debate internationally over the future of the sport, one that very well may see weightlifting removed from the Olympic program in future years over concerns about their approach, or lack thereof, to doping at the international level. Andrews was a fighter for the anti-doping cause, an effort that he pushed as he also fought to expand the sport of weightlifting to the widest audience possible in the United States. In July, he was named CEO of USA Fencing, an organization that has had its own challenges in recent years, especially in areas surrounding SafeSport. But it's an organization with an even larger membership than weightlifting — around 40,000 members compared to about 30,000 — and one that produces some sizable events, including its Summer Nationals, which were most recently held at the convention center in Minneapolis. Andrews will spend the next few months on a listening tour among his new constituents, but before he does, he sat down with SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz to discuss his own history in the sport, the future of the NGB's events, its desires to partner more with potential host cities and how in the world light sabers may fit into the equation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Liberal media using Donald Trump as the scapegoat for American racism is a distraction. Sure, his language may be deemed incendiary to some and insensitive to others. However, we have to be clear that he is not the author of bigotry or prejudicial behavior in this country. There is a four decades long track record of racism in the American fabric that existed well before Trump's business endeavors or presidency. We can easily become distracted when pundits, cable news anchors or commentators scream “Racism” each time Trump says or tweets something outrageous. Before major news outlets were following his tweets, we, Black people in America, faced racism in the housing markets, in education, in healthcare, in the criminal justice system, and so on. If our attention is diverted from breaking down inequities in these structures each time someone screams about Trump, what progress would we make? Here is an example… I read an article recently which recounted racist slurs and insults directed towards an American fencer and USA Fencing's sports performance manager, both of whom are black. The author writes that the athlete and her teammates were being honored via a Zoom conference for winning a title at the 2018 championships when a disruptor joined and typed the hateful language in the chat throughout the program. She wrote, “That anyone feels emboldened or entitled enough to utter those slurs is reprehensible though, sadly, unsurprising. Racism and discrimination are cornerstones of President Donald Trump's administration, and Trump never misses an opportunity to make people of color feel unwelcome in a country where we nearly everyone of us were an “other” at one point.” The writer includes Trump in the piece as if he is relevant to the incident. What does the President or his administration have to do with someone disturbing a celebratory event? He is not the author of racism. That is a distraction and we are too behind to lose focus. Instead allowing media to shift our attention to the antics of Trump- we must understand that the American institution is honeycombed with policies to deprive us of civil and human rights. We must remember that there are networks which sustain and benefit from them and that those networks include individuals from all sides of the ideological landscape. I encourage you to stay focused. Donald Trump is only a scapegoat commentators use to deflect from what has always been inherent in the foundation of this nation. But he is not the author of racism. No, he is only a symptom of it. A former elite fencer, Jeremy Summers went on to become a chiropractor who joined the USA Fencing staff as the director of sports medicine in 2015. Jeremy works with National Team members to provide health care services and consultations. He also coordinates the medical staff at all USA Fencing national events. We discuss his background as a fencer, including being an alternate to the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team and how an injury he suffered got him on the path to sports medicine. We discuss the acute and chronic injuries common in fencing along with tips for reducing the risk of suffering such injuries. The good news is that fencing is a relatively low injury sport. A key takeaway is to have a good strength and conditioning program and also to maintain mobility as we age. Jeremy also discusses finding a good sports medicine practitioner to treat your fencers (or yourself). Tip: look for a sports medicine specialization in a healthcare provider. Jeremy talks about the scope of practice of athletic trainers, chiropractors and medical doctors. We wrap up with some discussion on treating injuries like sprains and Jeremy gives several take home messages that you can start to use immediately.
