Betsy Brantner Smith retired in 2009 as a 29-year veteran of a large metropolitan police department in the Chicago suburbs. Beginning her career as a police dispatcher at age 17, Betsy became an officer four years later and has held positions in patrol, investigations, narcotics, juvenile, hostage negotiation, crime prevention and field training.  She received her four year degree from Western Illinois University in 1991, and was a class officer and graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety's School of Staff and Command in May of 2001. As a sergeant, she supervised her department's K-9 Unit, served as a field training sergeant, recruitment team sergeant, bike patrol coordinator, Crowd Control Bike Team leader, and supervisor of the Community Education/Crime Prevention Unit.  Betsy served on the Elderly Services Team, the Crisis Intervention Team, and was a proud founding supervisory member of NPD's Honor Guard Unit.  Betsy received numerous awards and commendations from her police department as well as many local and national awards for her performance as a police officer and supervisor. Being a first responder implies a certain level of risk. In fact, this has been the main reason why our guest for today left his job as a police officer due to the dangers he faces almost every day. A day comes when he realizes he has to change gears for his family.  This show reminds everyone that you need alternative means of income to cover your retirement and that includes both your own and your family's. And; Know how to locate and manage seller financing deals. “The freedom that's involved I love that already. You know, just from having my needs met, I'd like to get my wife there too. It's it's ginormous. It really is.”  - Thomas O'Brien Topic Covered:  1:32 - “I clocked in about a little over 15 years with Philly PD. The last I'd say seven as a sergeant. And I got swapped around a few different districts. And long story short, a couple of years back, I guess is probably going on about three years ago, now. We had the riots in Philly, and I got bottles of pistols on me. And I came home and I told my wife, I was like, there's gotta be, there's gotta be a better way to live than this. So that's kind of why I started looking into real estate.” What made Tom leave the police force and how he became a real estate investor  14:32 -  “I would suggest that people are doing virtually. there are things that you can do to somewhat protect yourself, right? Go to the state Contractor's License Board. See if there are any types of complaints against them. Use Yelp to see if they're bonded. Ask for a current project they're on a walk, ask if you can go talk to the current homeowner there's a bunch of stuff you can do.”  Here are some techniques Tyler shares on how to deal with contractors who don't work out. 16:01 - “Depending on the terms that you get from the seller, it could be attractive to turn around and sell the property on a wrap. Means that you're wrapping there, the existing terms that you're getting at a higher interest rate for a greater purchase price.” Here is an explanation of what a wraparound mortgage is, how it works, and what benefits it could offer.   31:57 - “If you commit to it for like three months and see how it goes. So I started with one VA, and then I was doing the lead management. And then after about two months, it already got overwhelming because I had like, X amount of leads in here. And I'd be on the phone all day either trying to get a hold of people or whatever, trying to find that needle in the haystack. And it got built out to the point where I had a business partner and we had two lead managers who were awesome. And two VAs and they were all cold calling and then we hit some bumps in the road where like, you know, I guess with anything else, like the cold calling, like, a lot of the numbers started getting blocked very quickly. And so we had a ton of leads coming in.” What inspired Tom to start cold calling? Although it was hard at first, he explained that dedication and persistence could increase your leads. 43:17  - “It's hands down the most complicated transaction he's ever done. There are two people in the title so they're not related. The gentleman Clyde, so he, his brother who passed away was married to the other person on the title” Tom explains how he dealt with a wraparound mortgage in one of his complicated deals. 50:44  “It's not hard, but it's not easy either. Like I think a lot of people whenever they don't taste success within the first 60 days, all of a sudden, the honeymoon effect is worn off. And they don't want to go through all the basically work. Because you'll go months and months without ever collecting anything. But like once you get over that hump. Next thing you know, you got this deal going and this deal goes on. Mike explained that real estate is not an easy game, it can be tough at the beginning, but once you understand how it works, money will flow. Don't stop once you've reached your stride.  55:49 - “I know that that feeling of going to work and being like, dude, like, Are my something bad's gonna happen and my family is gonna get a knock on the door or something like that there was a temple officer that got assassinated the other day. And he was new. I think he had like a year on or something like that. They're posting pictures all over social media of him and his kids and family. It's, it's heartbreaking. That is the worst example of anything that could happen, but it's possible. So now I don't have to do that. I don't have to worry about that anymore. Like I could get struck by lightning more. Who knows. But at least I can wake up and be happy about what I do and know that you know, I don't have to worry about my kids gonna knock. I'm cool with that.” Investing has given Tom the financial freedom that he wanted, enabling him to spend more time with his wife and children. Furthermore, he is no longer at risk because of his work, which is priceless. It now gives him the freedom to take care of his family without having to worry about his safety.  58:08 - “You need to set your expectations accordingly. I mean, if you're looking to leave the job, just know that you're taking on another one initially, just the amount of time and effort you're gonna have to put into learning. I mean, you have everything from marketing to sales to deal structuring, and then transaction coordination, everything that they're all individual jobs in and of itself. So it's a lot to learn. But the big thing for me is I Always do skip tracing.  The time it's for my contractors or my subs, it's like, where do they live? Are they bonded? Are they licensed? Do they have any complaints? Idaho's actually pretty good about listing all that. So I always go and look and if I don't find them, I call the contractor and say, Hey, I don't I don't see your license on the state board, and sometimes a senator or a different trade or whatever it is, but at least it lets them know, Hey, I'm looking you up before I spend my money with you.”.  - Tyler Thrush ‘You just have to be willing to get punched in the face and it's going to continue to happen. For example. My lead sources have been almost 100% via PPC or SEO for the last year and a half But in the last six months, my lead costs have exponentially increased. And there's still that gap where a lot of people are looking online or for whatever reason, still thinking we're back in 2020, or 2021. So I'm spending a ton of money without really realizing, any deals at this point. And so for me, it's like, okay, well, how do I adapt? A lot of these wholesale numbers don't work. I can do one of two things I can quit, which I know I'm not going to ever do. Or I can figure out how do I turn these leads into deals that do work, and as you said, for that wrap, I think a lot of these deals would work on a wrap because you're gonna be able to play that middle game, and even if it's a smaller number, interest rates right now are so high, if I can secure low-interest debt, even though there's not a lot of equity, I may be able to make a play on some of these properties, whereas I didn't before. And that's why I even told you like three to six months of any type of marketing you have to commit because one month or two weeks is way too small of a sample size to understand if something works 3,6,9,12 months, you can understand, Okay, how much am I spending? How much am I receiving is this worthwhile? And is there anything else that generates a larger return? Are you still just doing the cold calling?” - Tyler Thrush   “If you're just only going to walk into the super easy deals, where there are just no problems with the house or the contract or the liens. There's not a lot of value. So like, you usually get rewarded directly proportional to the problem you solved.” - Mike Webb   “It's not hard, but it's not easy either. So they got mass on certain days of the week, I can go with them during the day and they get excited to see me, whatever my daughter's got a dance coming up next month or my son just anything that's involved with family now I can do it. Like, I don't have to answer it and that alone is just priceless. MOVE was a quasi-political organization that began in the 1970s.  Ex-members say it is a cult, current members say it is a peaceful back-to-nature movement meant to reunited mankind with the natural world.  In 1978 the City of Philadelphia said it was a terrorist organization that needed to be dealt with, and the city did just that with 400 cops, tanks, bulldozers, hand grenades, and guns.  An officer died and nine members were sent to jail based on the forensic work of the police.  In 1985 Philly came back to settle the score with MOVE, this time with bombs.  An entire city block was lost to fire, which was allowed to rage uncontrolled for hours.  11 MOVE members died in the bombing, 6 adults and 5 children.  61 homes were destroyed by the fire. Did MOVE have a reason to distrust the police?  What started it all and how did a group of peaceful back-to-the-earth naturalists find themselves at odds with the Philly PD?

A police officer celebrating his 25th year in the force was surprised by his friend with a beautiful cake.  The cake was meant to celebrate the officer's long career in a pretty tough, sometimes thankless job.  Instead the cake insulted the entire Philly police department.  The cake was decorated with a Philly PD badge, but the PPD slogan “Honor, Integrity, Service” had been replaced with the words “Coffee, Donuts, Corruption.”  The customer (whose name ironically is not Karen) who ordered the cake called the bakery and spoke to the manager to complain and then called a local news station because she felt the bakery was lying.  The local news station took Not-Karen's complaint very seriously and aired a news story about the cake with the bad-badge.  There was no other news to report that week so the news station was probably very grateful to the customer for calling them and reporting the incident. The bakery claimed it was an honest mistake.  They had simply grabbed an image off the internet and printed it out without really looking at the fine print on the image.  They are bakers and don't know that the internet sometimes lies.   Plus, that bad-badge image is one of the first images that pop up when you google “Philly PD badge” so what's a bakery to do except issue a sweet apology and hope everyone understands that workplace accidents happen when people are overworked because companies are understaffed because of COVID.

Philly PD does not mess around. It's been a long standing unofficial policy to throw trauma victims in the back of their cruisers and speed to the hospital. Philly refers to this as the scoop and go. Donald Rooum, pt1 This week, we invite you to listen in on the first part of a conversation we had with 90 year old anarchist, cartoonist and author, Donald Rooum. Donald was born 1928 in Bradford, UK. Donald is most known for his longtime illustration of the wiley, bomb-throwing, firebrand anarchist cartoon character, Wildcat. In this episode, Donald talks about his early political trajectory and development from childhood involvement during World War II in a Communist Party front group into anarchism via the speakers corner in Hyde Park. Donald talks about the Malatesta Anarchist Club, his artistic development and love of cartooning and engagement with activism to stop corporal punishment in schools in the U.K. and ideas about social change and anarchist intervention. Mumia Abu-Jamal On August 30th in Philadelphia, PA at 13th and Filbert there will be a rally during the hearing of imprisoned journalist, intellectual and former Black Panther, Mumia Abu-Jamal. From 8am til 11am people are asked to show up in support of this man who has spent nearly 40 years in prison, 30 of it in solitary on death row, for a political show trial for the killing of a cop many believe he didn't commit. Whether he did or didn't, Mumia was obviously railroaded for his political beliefs and his reporting critical of the Philly PD & the administration of Frank Rizzo. More on the event, including the nature of the current legal motion, can be found on fedbook. #August21 Repression Starts People are pushing back. For starters: Imam Siddique Abdullah Hasan There is a phone zap in support of Lucasville Uprising prisoner and death row inmate, Siddique Abdullah Hasan, a voice you've heard on this show before. Hasan, a member of the Free Ohio Movement and outspoken activist behind bars for peoples dignity, is believed to be suffering similar repression as he did in the run up to the 2016 National Prison Strike. He has been transfered into the hole, likely as a way to shut him up. There is a phone zap called by the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee on Monday, July 30th between 9am and 5pm central time. Details forthcoming on the fedbook event. Kevin “Rashid” Johnson Kevin “Rashid” Johnson, a leader of the New Afrikan Black Panther Party (NABPP) and member of the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee (IWOC), whose organizing was discussed in DHS/FBI fusion center “terrorism threat assessment” publications as far back as 2009 (page 50) is being kept in solitary confinement after being given an “inciting a riot” charge for writing an article about the Operation PUSH strikes in Florida, and has faced punitive transfer after transfer.; Keith “Comrade Malik” Washington Keith “Malik” Washington, a Texas inmate who is also involved with the NABPP and IWOC, has spent the past two years in ad-seg (solitary confinement) on a bogus riot charge connected to his involvement in the 2016 prison strike. He was due to be released from ad-seg, but then had his clearance abruptly revoked and was sent back to solitary on the grounds that the classifications committee had “received additional information” from the Fusion Center in Texas. He has also had issues with medical information about his health issues mysteriously disappearing, leading to the administration putting him in dangerous situations, and is currently being held in an extremely hot and humid punishment cell that he describes as being like “a living hell” and causing headaches, nosebleeds and dizziness.; Jason Renard Walker Meanwhile, Jason Renard Walker, another Texas inmate involved with the NABPP and the 2016 strikes, and a contributor to the Fire Inside zine, has managed to get released from solitary, but faces constant threats and harassment from staff, including threats to send him back to solitary on bogus charges for things as simple as asking for water and medical attention, and trying to get back into his own cell so he can use a fan to cool down. Both Malik and Jason have reported having their mail tampered with, and the explicitly political nature of this censorship was made clear in a conversation with a prison official who told Jason that any writing containing the words “black panther” would be treated as gang material. Supporting the prison strike means monitoring and opposing the repressive methods that the prison system uses to try and break it, and paying attention to the treatment of 2016 strike organizers like Rashid, Malik, Jason and others can indicate the tactics that are likely to be used more widely in the weeks to come. Numbers and scripts to call in with for Malik's situation: Malik has specifically requested a call-in campaign urging Texas legislators to investigate the conditions at the McConnell Unit. This week on The Final Straw, we'll be airing two interviews. Shane Burley on Fascism Today In the first, Bursts spoke with author and activist Shane Burley about the state of street level fascism and anti-fascism in the U.S. Shane is the author of numerous articles on the subject as well as a the 2017 book from AK Press, "Fascism Today: What It Is And How To End It." The conversation ranges from talking about specific groups like Atomwaffen, The Proud Boys, Patriot Prayer and the Traditionalist Workers Party (TWP), to the Unite The Right 2 (UTR2) having been announced by Jason Kessler for either D.C. or Charlottesville, VA. Shane also talks about essentialism in fascism and the creeping relationship between "identitarian" patriarchs and the trans-misogyny of TERFs (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists) in Deep Green Resistance, such as Lierre Kieth and Derrick Jensen. This episode contains three segments: Move 9 Parole "Stare Into The Lights My Pretties" Anarcho-Syndicalist Organizing in Kosovo MOVE9 Parole First, there's the interview that Bursts held with Michael Davis Africa Jr., a member of the MOVE organization.  MOVE is a Philadelphia-based black liberation group founded by John Africa in 1972. The group lives communally. During the conversation, Michael Jr. talks about the case of the MOVE9, who were 9 members of that group who were arrested and accused of the killing of a police officer in 1978 in Philadelphia, a charge they each deny.  Officer James Ramp was killed following a year of the Philly PD blockading the house for a year under an eviction order and the police besieged the house on August 8th, 1978.  The MOVE 9 have been incarcerated for almost 40 years now, with Merle & Phil dying behind bars.  Police and white supremacist affiliated groups have successfully gotten parole denied for Eddie, Michael and Delbert Africa over the last 9 months as they do for many Political Prisoners from the 1960's through 80's in the U.S.  There are upcoming are parole hearings for Janet, Janine and Debbie Africa and more info on who to petition for their release can be found at http://onamove.com/move-9/. The name of the D.A. who prosecuted the MOVE9 in 1978 and who is still on the paperwork and has a say on the parole of the MOVE9 40 years later is named John Straub. Coming up this Saturday, February 24th starting at 4pm there'll be an event called "Framed In America: The Making of Political Prisoners".  This will take place at The National Black Theater, 2031 5th Ave in Harlem, New York and will include presentations by Ramona Africa, Fred Hampton Jr, Pam Africa, Roger Wareham, Betty Davis, Ralph Poynter and Johanna Fernandez.  More info can be found on the Justice for the Move 9 fedbook group. Anarcho-Syndicalist Organizing in Kosovo Finally, we'll be airing an interview conducted by our friends at Crna Luknja on Radio Student in Lubjlana, Slovenia, that they conducted with members of an anarcho-syndicalist collective from Pristina, the capital of Kosovo.  This segment was released as a part of the February 2018 edition of B(A)DNews: Angry Voices From Around The World, from the A-Radio Network of which The Final Straw, Črna Luknja and Dissident Island are members. Keep PUSHing: Building on the #OperationPUSH demands Mere days before FDC's repression effort began scattering active prisoners into new facilities, and into solitary confinement for the weeks surrounding January 15, an Operation PUSH prisoner's anonymous voice reached the world and called on outside supporters to "shine a light from the outside in on the system." In essence, this prisoner saw what was coming and passed the torch to us on the outside. With three clear demands and a simple strategy, this invisible group of prisoners gave a glimpse of what could be, if the networks of outside solidarity and inside communication could coalesce. While we have heard from many prisoners since January 15, we know that the vast majority of FL prisoners still do not know how much support they garnered on the outside. And many who made plans to struggle together have not seen or heard from each other in weeks. In many ways, the next steps towards victory for them are in our hands. It is with this understanding that a group of us on the outside are developing an additional list of demands, based primarily on communication from prisoners we've gotten in recent weeks, that aims to honor the countless who have suffered major sacrifices to develop or report on Operation PUSH as well as those who had no idea what it was, but were punished preemptively simply because they were viewed as potential organizers or participants. We will do all we can to bring these demands to FDC, the Governor and State Legislature, in an effort to carry the prisoners' vision for Operation PUSH forward. In addition to the Operation PUSH demands of payment, parole and pricing, we, supporters of all Florida prisoners struggling for dignity, demand: An end to censorship of publications that give voice to prisoners and/or critique prisons; An end to repression of prisoners for communication with outside advocates; An end to the use of Security Threat Group status as a means for political repression; An end to strip cells and extreme temperatures to torture prisoners; An explanation of the cause for a major spike in 2017 prisoner deaths; Protection of prisoners health from nearby industrial activity, including phosphate mining and landfills; An end to black mold-infested facilities, spoiled food and dilapidated buildings; Removal of all KKK members, and other recognized racist hate groups, from FDC staff; An end to the medical co-pay that results in financial debt and untreated illness; An immediate reduction in prison population using existing guidelines for clemency; and A face-to-face meeting with FDC officials to further discuss these matters.
