Rob Eschmann and DC Benney discuss how Rob's new book, "When The Hoods Come Off" , chaotic giveaway in Union Square, DC Benny's new comedy hour on YouTube, and how the use of social media challenges racism and racist narratives with host Marina Franklin. Rob Eschmann Dr. Eschmann is a writer, educator, filmmaker, and scholar from Chicago. He is a proud product of the Chicago Public Schools and received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2017. He writes on educational inequality, community violence, racism, social media, and youth wellbeing. His research seeks to uncover individual, group, and intuitional-level barriers to racial and economic equity, and he pays special attention to the heroic efforts everyday people make to combat those barriers. For Dr. Eschmann, this work is a part of the freedom struggle. The function of racism is to reproduce racial inequality, but in the 21st Century the devices of racism are often hidden behind color-neutral laws or friendly interactions. Highlighting the mechanisms of racism, therefore, can demonstrate the continuing significance of race, raise consciousness, and promote and strengthen resistance efforts. Dr. Eschmann is an avid reader and re-reader of fantasy fiction who uses his children as a justification for his continued interest in young-adult fiction and regular trips to the comic book store. In terms of creative endeavors, Dr. Eschmann has co-written and directed several short films for the 48 Hour Film Project Film Festival, and has written and workshopped fiction since his days as a graduate student. He is currently in the midst of his first novel project. *Dr. Eschmann's first book, When the Hood Comes Off: Racism and Resistance in the Digital Age, is an engaging and comprehensive exploration of the ways technology and online communication are changing how we experience, understand, and respond to racism, both online and in-person. You can buy it now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or wherever books are sold. D.C. Benny's story-telling style of comedy has delighted audiences over his thirty-five years as a New York-based performer. His third appearance on NBC's “Showtime At The Apollo” has over eighteen million Youtube views, he has 4 stand up specials including Comedy Central Presents, Dry Bar, was a season finalist on both seasons 2 and 8 of NBC's Last Comic Standing. He's been featured in John Singleton's “Illegal Tender”, "Freedomland" with Samuel Jackson and Julianne Moore, "Love Walked In" with Terrance Stamp, "Where God Left His Shoes" with John Leguizamo, recurred on the soap opera “As The World Turns” and appeared in many national commercials such as the Budweiser "How You Doin'?” campaign. He co-hosted the story-telling podcast, "Tall But True", with Cash Cab's Ben Bailey, was a cast member on ABC"s Supermarket Sweep with Leslie Jones and currently plays "Bart" on Amy Schumer's series Life and Beth on Hulu. His writing has been published in New York Magazine, Mystery Tribune, Heeb Magazine, Narratively, and The New York Observer. He currently lives in Long Island's North Fork, where he teaches comedic storytelling and runs a beach rental business with his wife at www.bungalowouteast.com. Always hosted by Marina Franklin - One Hour Comedy Special: Single Black Female ( Amazon Prime, CW Network), TBS's The Last O.G, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Hysterical on FX, The Movie Trainwreck, Louie Season V, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, HBO's Crashing, and The Breaks with Michelle Wolf.
Mike CotayoTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know New York based stand up comedian Mike Cotayo. In this episode we chat about the drunk driving accident that Mike was in when he was just 18 months old, and the disabilities he was left with as a result of that traumatic brain injury. We also talk extensively about his varied and heavy drug use; including which is his favorite drug and why. We chat a little about what made Mike become a social worker (MSW) with a masters degree from NYU. Then we get into why he thinks comedy is important, how it may have saved his life, and why making people laugh is so important to him. He shares some stories about being an extra on Saturday Night Live, winning Showtime At The Apollo, and what bombing as a comic means to him. Mike is putting together a stand up comedy festival as part of a 501c3, and what he hopes to accomplish with it. It's called "Stand Up If You Can", and I think it has a great purpose. Triggerrun – Artist Bio Triggerrun Production (TRP), one of the greatest hidden treasures of the underground music scene has returned! The legacy began in 1989, when three (3) young men from Monroe High (Albany, GA), would recruit three (3) young men from a rival high school, Westover, to form a dance group to compete in local talent shows just for fun. Their first performance would be epic and awe-inspiring as TRP would spark the initial flame to secure their legacy into the underground world of hip hop to begin their dominance! To quench their new found thirst for fame, Triggerun would set its sight on their next big venture and enter into the city's most popular cash prize event of them all, Albany's "Night At The Apollo" event sponsored and promoted by Gilbert Udoto as spin-off of the World Famous "cultural phenomena, “It's Showtime At The Apollo”. The goal was simple, to win the local cash prize of five hundred dollars ($500) to pay for studio time at Katz & Jammer, in order to record and shop their demo to the industry major record labels in hopes of their big break! Hungry for stardom, in 1992, Triggerrun would split into two groups to double their earnings in the "Dance" category. And as a result, Triggerrun would win both 1st and 2nd place in the dance category. Their feat was so impressive, TRP would begin to create a cult following throughout the city. Over the next four years, they would reign atop of the dance category, winning 1st Place for three (3) out of the four (4) years before officially retiring from the amateur circuit during the 5th year. As an encore, in the summer of ‘93, Triggerrun began expanding its territory crossing Florida lines. Next stop, Tallahassee Florida. Home of the Florida A & M University (FAMU) Rattlers, The Tallahassee Urban League and 100 Black Men of America would sponsor the talent show extravaganza at one of the coolest nightclubs in the city, the Moon. Triggerrun's 1st Place finish at the Moon would help the group finally reach their pinnacle. For the next stop would be a one way ticket to perform center stage in front of a national television audience at the World Famous "Apollo Theatre" in Harlem, New York hosted by the one and only Steve Harvey! However, their much celebrated victory would soon spark another competitive stand-off with the FAMU Marching 100's beloved Strikers dance group. After securing their victory, Triggerrun would frequent another well known Tallahassee night spot of its day known as “The Barn''. The night would be EPIC! And would go down in history as the first ever, “You Got Served “dance off! The Trigger versus the Strikers!! The dance battle would go back and forward as expected. However, Triggerrun would prevail with their eclectic style of dance to claim the unofficial victory. Their victory at the Moon would also capture the eyes and ears of Miami-bass music artist, Beat Master Clay D. The “Give Me A Bottle” emcee would invite Triggerrun to perform as opening act for a three day tour headlined by Uncle Luke [Skywalker]. The invitation would be their first professional tour. Triggerrun would use this opportunity to promote their first indie single release, “Pump Ya Fist.” Triggerrun finally began to experience success, and stardom away from home, as they would be scheduled to interview with the campus television show “Snake Eyes”, (created by Kelsey L. Scott). This interview would spawn an additional opportunity as opening act for II D Extreme and Heavy D, a FAMU sponsored student concert event. However, it was TRP's amateur night television debut that would forever change the world of Hip Hop as they would perform an eclectic, aerobatic dance ensemble that would catapult them into the underground mythical urban legends and pioneers for the next generation of Hip Hop dancers. An entertainment spectacle never before seen, Triggerrun would become a precursor to spark an evolutionary dance culture and trend across the nation. H3TheArtist(Herbert Bowens, Jr.) described the performance as "a surreal and humbling experience". Fast forward to 1998, “Knegil”(Anthony K. Washington) would head north to Atlanta to finish school and raise a family. Still trying to hold the group together, TRP worked to drop their second indie release, the single, “Toss It Up” recorded at the infamous Patchwerk studios home of none other than the legends Outkast. TRP began to set focus on the new music scene growing in Atlanta and would perform at one of the local area club hot spot known as the “Aquarium”. Shortly after, Triggerrun would grow apart as “Knegil” would come to a spiritual crossroads. The choice, either to continue to chase the dream of music or raising a family. The latter proved victorious, ultimately sealing the group's fate. In the meantime, H3TheArtist (Herbert Bowens,Jr.) would continue his love of dance at Florida A & M University. He marched with the world- renown Marching 100,(Snare Drum..Z Phi 28) where he became widely known on campus as the dancing machine. His dynamic dance style, inspired by the Trigger, was further polished in the program Orchesis Contemporary Dance Theatre where he studied modern ballet, African, and tap dance. H3 was evolving as an artist and overall performer. He also pursued his passion in acting while playing the Lead Male Actor in “On Toby Time”, an off-Broadway musical about a man chasing his dreams in NewYork during the Chitlin Circuit and The Scarecrow in FAMU'S rendition of the Wiz. In each musical production, Herb used his acting, singing, and dancing super powers earning him the name…H3 (a triple threat). After graduating from FAMU with a degree in elementary education, H3 moved to Atlanta to continue pursuing his dreams in the arts. In Atlanta, he landed his first role in the blockbuster movie Drumline(2002) directed by Charles Stone/Twentieth Century Fox and Stomp the Yard (2007) directed by Sylvain White/Rainforest Production. Herbert was amongst a very select group of dancers cast as a Theta Nu Theta (Fictitious Fraternity) which represented a band of elite dancers/steppers. A musician since elementary school, H3 began quest as a solo artist, writing and composing music which he released through the independent distributor DistroKid . Herb's “Steppin Out” album demonstrates his lyrical range, vocal style, and diverse content which captures the playful, romantic, and theatrical side of love. In addition, H3 crafted a master musical ensemble titled,”The Carousel-A Poetry Based Musical”, a play about never giving up on your dreams. An inspirational play turned true through his own perseverance and journey that has brought him back full circle to the brotherhood, Triggerrun! Acting as the glue to hold the group together, Syncere(Nathaniel Whitfield) kept the members in touch, never letting the dream fade. In 2021, things clicked, and major events pulled Triggerrun back together again. They have refined their direction, focusing on what they truly want. Hard at work on new music, they are building an extensive catalog of work and launching a successful clothing line. The time is right, giving Triggerrun their chance to finally share their voice and leave their musical footprint. Using music as a therapy to express pain and process heartache, this opportunity has proven to be a miracle in each of their lives. Their passion has been rekindled, and Triggerrun is remembering a true love that will never fail them: Music. Triggerrun's underground music revolution created an undeniable cosmic shift that is still resonating within the industry at large. What began as a music and dance troupe is now a lifelong brotherhood. Triggerrun maintains a delicate balance of curating, critiquing, and refining their work together. Their sound is derived from a collection of hip-hop roots, blended with an R&B flair. Re-emerging from the underground with its eclectic New York City meets ATL bass thumping, Dirty South infusion debut single, Turn Up!

When the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem paused live performances last March, there were questions about what would happen next. Like many venues, the theater made the transition to virtual performances, drawing audiences from all over the world, but it also considered ways to serve its local community including microgrants for nearby businesses and displaying messages of hope on its marquee. Fatima Jones, the senior director of marketing and communications, talks with Dr. Josh Sharfstein about how the health of the community and the theater are intertwined, and how the pandemic may have a lasting impact on how The Apollo thinks about its programming. You can check out the Apollo Theater at www.apollotheaters.org.

You won't find the name Houston Curtis on any poker leaderboards, but for a brief period of time during the height of the boom, he was among the biggest winners in the game. Curtis made his way to Los Angeles by way of Illinois, hoping to make it in the music business. He transitioned to TV production after doing audience warm up for Showtime At The Apollo, later working on shows such as Jerry Springer and The Dating Game, and as an executive at MTV. His Best Of Backyard Wrestling videos in the early 2000s made him a millionaire, and he went on to produce poker strategy videos for Phil Hellmuth, and the Ultimate Blackjack Tour. By chance, Curtis was seated next to SpiderMan star Tobey Maguire one night while playing poker at the Commerce Casino. The two hit it off and became friends, moving their action from the casino to private high-stakes games filled with the Hollywood elite. The games were chronicled in the movie Molly's Game, as well as the book it was based on written by Molly Bloom. But according to Curtis and his book, Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist, it was actually he and Maguire, not Bloom, who ran the game while it was in L.A., taking upwards of $1 million per month from players such as Nelly, David Schwimmer, director Todd Phillips, Don Cheadle, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Pete Sampras, Jon Landau, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Leonardo DiCaprio, before it all came crashing down.Highlights from this interview include shooting music videos in the desert, being "related" to Minnesota Fats, Fortress: Stronghold Of Rock to Mind Over Matter, warming up crowds at Showtime At The Apollo, Jerry Springer and Backyard Wrestling, hiding his sleight-of-hand skills, car washing with Steve Perry, the ultra-competitive and eccentric Tobey Maguire, separating fact from fiction in Molly's Game, The Viper Room, Todd Phillips and Old Spice, $800,000 bluffs at $200-$400, integrity and honesty from Rick Salomon, telling Layne Flack and his bag of cash to go home, Leonardo DiCaprio and his Armani furniture, the disappointing poker skills of Matt Damon, why David Schwimmer is such as Ross, Don Cheadle at the Playboy Mansion, losing seven figures in one night, playing on the set of SpiderMan 3 and in a sex dungeon, a nightmare with Cheech and Chong, hustling a weight loss prop bet, and the sounds of Norm Macdonald.

Desmond feels that a strong anti-Obama sentiment turned out numbers in 2016, and that he’s worried that frustrated voters will simply choose to not vote at all. He’s looking for a candidate that is “not afraid to take the gloves off” and “go toe-to-toe with Trump.” Links: Desmond Jones on Showtime at the Apollo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvXO7YFNNdQ Storm E Weather (Poems) on CD Baby https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/desmond Desmond Jones on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/3LZMP2LwC4VOgTnpCLsvfK Eye of Storm Productions on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrStormE?fbclid=IwAR1r7H0d2Ejlokomkyx2slzpOzSoJ-B57VbpvHEi2f6r8ae-xuOCytq-l3o Apply for the show! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeBgu5VjxuTLVDDxATLHvAOLK8zuU8dgbYtXaxLqEp4XS7AQ/viewform?usp=sflink Email mailto:pete.brown@thisisohio2020.com Social Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thisisohio2020 Twitter https://www.twitter.com/thisisohio2020 YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9TypVQoxGomhCFx0jGqMxQ?view_as=public Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thisisohio2020/?hl=en Connect with Pete Twitter https://www.twitter.com/petebrownsays Facebook https://www.facebook.com/petebrownsays LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/peterwardbrown/ Pete Brown Says podcast wherever you get your podcasts & at https://www.petebrownsays.com Portfolio https://wwww.petebrown.me Blue Monkey Films https://vimeo.com/bluemonkeyfilm Music Funkorama Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Being talented/gifted is one thing, but actually showcasing it to the world is another. In the season 2 finale, Izzy and his co-host/manager (Nick Diddy) discuss the importance of taking that leap of faith, or jumping off the porch. Both Izzy and Nick Diddy give books suggestions for the audience to help them to stay on track also. The episode explains that your gifts aren't even for you and if a person doesn't show their talents they will go to waste!
In the first part of a two part series, Izzy and his co-host (713-E) discuss the ins and outs of living in your passion. From the struggles of working a 9-5, even the battling with the struggling of people believing in your dreams. Perspectives are tested, and even broadened for both parties.

My guest today is the diversely talented Jenni Pulos. Like a lot of us she has a maxed out to-do list. She is best known as Executive Assistant to Jeff Lewis on Bravo’s Emmy nominated hit show Flipping Out and it's spinoff show Interior Therapy. Flipping Out is currently filming it's eighth season with Jenni adding Co-Executive Producer to her very long to-do list which includes working as an actress, comedian, writer and rapper. Yes! She in fact won Showtime At The Apollo and was inspired to produce a rap album that just came out called Old School Kids Beats. She’s also the author of the book Grin and Bear It: How to be Happy No Matter What Reality Throws Your Way. I respect and love Jenni. A lot. Watching her on TV I feel as though we’d connect and you can probably tell that I had a huge giant smile on my face during this interview. She’s extremely down to earth, funny and real. She’s a business woman, wife, mom and all around cool chick. And for all those reason and more, I’m super excited to have her on the podcast. Several takeaways from our interview: -- Jenni’s biggest financial mistake right out of college… involving passing up an offer for a downpayment on a house! -- What it takes to succeed in the entertainment industry. -- How to spend and invest without fear… emotions she had to overcome.

President Obama's third year in office elicited some of the most polarized job approval ratings ever, as the differences between Republican and Democratic views of the president stood at near-record highs, a new survey shows. In 2011, 80 percent of Democrats approved of Obama's job performance, compared to only 12 percent of Republicans, according to Gallup. The gap of 68 percent is the fourth-highest on record, going all the way back to the Eisenhower administration, the pollster said. Only President George W. Bush's fourth, fifth and sixth years in office showed higher degrees of polarization. It appears that the last decade has seen some of the most polarized views on the presidency ever. Put together, the Bush and Obama administrations account for the 7 most polarized years on record, and 8 of the top 10. Despite all this, the polarization looks to get even worse in 2012. “Americans likely view a president seeking re-election in more sharply partisan terms as they decide whether he is deserving of a second term in office. Thus, it would be expected that Obama's already highly polarized ratings may become more so over the next 12 months,” according to Gallup.

“I, I'm so in love with you,” Barack Obama crooned to a thrilled crowd at a fund-raiser at the Apollo in Harlem on Thursday night, doing a seductive imitation as Al Green himself looked on. The song would make a good campaign anthem: “Let's stay together, lovin' you whether, whether times are good or bad, happy or sad.” Don't break up, turn around and make up. Times have been bad and sad, and The One did not turn out to be a messiah, just a mortal politician who ruefully jokes that his talent is hitting the “sweet spot” where he makes no one happy, neither allies nor opponents. The man who became famous with a speech declaring that we were one America, not opposing teams of red and blue states, presides over an America more riven by blue and red than ever. The man who came to Washington on a wave of euphoria has had a presidency with all the joy of a root canal, dragged down by W.'s recklessness and his own inability to read America's panic and its thirst for a strong leader. In an interview with Fareed Zakaria for this week's Time cover story, the president is maddeningly naïve.

A Comprehensive List Of Obama's Failures It's hard to think of a president that has been more of an Epic Failure than President Obama. Even Carter is glad this guy came along, so at least he knows he is no longer the worst president ever. Here is just a short list of Obama's Failures:

They say a leopard can't change its spots, but there is one comedienne doing the equivalent on the stage today. Honesty makes for the best laughter and policy. You'll definitely get this from another one of St. Louis' hottest, dazzling comedienne, B - Phlat. B Phlat has been a Host and Headliner for the RJE Urban Comedy Cabaret Tour, which is the largest, highest grossing, and longest running comedy tour catering to colleges/ universities in the nation. Don't forget the QOD, are you tired of the "Bin Laden coverage" and Cathleen's JOKE OF THE DAY. It is Who's Who Wednesday on the big the show!!!
