Ultra-processed foods now make up over half of what many of us eat - and the health consequences are only just coming into focus. In this episode, we reveal what's really happening inside your body when you eat these foods daily. Our guest is Dr. Andy Chan, a Harvard professor and leading expert on gut health and cancer prevention. He heads the Clinical and Translational Epidemiology Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and has published over 400 scientific papers. Dr. Chan breaks down the hidden links between UPFs, inflammation, and diseases like obesity, diabetes, and colorectal cancer. You'll hear why some foods that look healthy on the shelf may be doing long-term damage - and how the gut microbiome plays a crucial role in the process. This is the research big food companies don't want you to hear. If you care about what you and your family are eating, don't miss this conversation. Unwrap the truth about your food
Today, we're diving into an important and growing health concern: colon cancer. Recent studies show that cases of colon cancer are becoming increasingly common in younger adults. In fact, the rate has doubled among people under 50 since the 1990s, prompting doctors to lower the recommended age for screening. So what can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones? I'm joined by Harvard Medical School professor, Dr. Andy Chan, to talk about the importance of colon cancer screenings and how changes to our diet could help reduce the risk of this disease.
Rates of colorectal cancer have declined in people over 65 but doubled among people under 50 in the last few decades. By 2030 it's expected to be the leading cancer-related death in this age group. In today's episode, gastrointestinal cancer and prevention specialist, Dr. Andy Chan, explains how changes in the gut microbiome could be to blame. Dr. Chan discusses the critical role your diet plays in cancer risk, how your gut microbiome can influence the development of colon cancer and the steps you can take to lower your risk. Dr. Andy Chan is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Program Director for Gastroenterology training at Massachusetts General Hospital. Learn how your body responds to food

Eastern cultures were long known for living a cleaner, and healthier life. This was partially due to traditional diets and lifestyle that stayed away from many of the western diets and lifestyles. But because of globalization, this is no longer the case and there's a rapid decline in health in these areas as the western influence becomes more prevalent. This allows us to actually observe what we need to avoid and get back to balance. To share how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can do wonders for our health and our weight, we invited Andy Chan to the show. Andy is the author of Dynamic Balance, and joins the show to discuss how he was influenced by his 10-year stay in the United States and how it shaped his unique outlook on health and athletic performance.

Traditional Chinese Medicine originated about 3000 years. It sees the body as an integrated whole and focuses on helping people live in balance with themselves and with nature. On today's show we will get an overview of some of the TCM principles then we are going to get into the importance of our Fascia health.. and what the link is between diet, emotions, and our Fascia System through the TCM lens. My guest Andy (Tsz Chiu) Chan is a strength and conditioning coach with a master's degree in exercise science he's also an educator, . He currently teaches education courses for the National Academy of Sports Medicine, TRX, TriggerPoint Performance, and Power Plate. In his recently published book called “Dynamic Balance” that he wrote along with a TCM practitioner, he breaks down the ancient principles of TCM, explores the interconnectedness between diet, emotions, and training through the lens of TCM, and gives a really great guide to integrate and incorporate these principles into our own strength and conditioning training by showing how TCM can really serve as a great compliment to current exercise models. In the latest episode of the Simply Fit Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Andy Chan, Andy is a health and fitness coach and author with a master's degree in exercise science. Andy's journey began with him pursuing a career in football with the hopes of becoming a professional one day. He found that the work he was doing in the gym wasn't contributing towards his performance on the field and later in his career found that the traditional approach to exercise and nutrition wasn't leaving his clients with the best long term results either. He began searching for the answer and discovered that for himself and his clients, traditional Chinese medicine was the missing link. He's since been on a journey to open people's minds to something that seems quite spiritual and esoteric at first glance, but realistically can be integrated into the traditional western approach to create more balance within your body, mind and dare I say it, spirit. In this conversation you can expect to learn: What the term dynamic balance means along with some of the core principles of TCM. How our unregulated emotions may be impacting our weight loss or muscle building efforts. How Andy integrates dynamic balance into his own life and so much more. Many employers and critics of higher education think many colleges and universities focus too little on ensuring that their graduates thrive after they leave, and favor holding institutions accountable for how their students fare in the job market. That's unpalatable to a lot of academics, who view a college education as about more than how much you earn. The guests in this week's episode, Wake Forest University's Andy Chan and Christine Cruzvergara of Handshake, endorse the view that colleges and universities should be collecting and sharing data about how well they are preparing students for success in the workplace, given that that's the primary reason many students go to college. But the set of common metrics they propose colleges use to measure their own performance is broad, and it includes such data as how much institutions expose students to experiential learning in college to graduates' satisfaction with their jobs once they leave. Chan and Cruzvergara discuss the need for colleges to prioritize their students' career readiness, and to move beyond tired debates pitting learning against vocation. Hosted by Doug Lederman, co-editor of Inside Higher Ed This episode is sponsored by D2L.
In this episode, we talk with Andy Chan, Vice President for Innovation and Career Development at Wake Forest University. We ask Andy about the ways vocation and career overlap, as well as how we might help students rethink success. The provocative title of his TED talk, “Why Career Services Must Die,” is a rallying cry for how the academy can better integrate questions of career and purpose throughout all aspects of the college experience. For Andy, innovation is not just about novelty for its own sake, but about “creating value in new ways that meets the needs of those you serve, and also aligns with who you are and what you value.” Sharing some significant moments in his own vocational journey, Andy emphasizes the importance of “situational mentors” along the way. Andy helps us see that the categories of mission, core values, and our students' passions can help us reimagine more instrumentalist models of “career services” as forms of vocational exploration and discernment.

“My successes tend to come after moments that felt like my biggest failures.” - Shannon RowburyIt’s easy to view great athletes through just the lens of their training and results. But in this episode, you’ll be reminded there’s so much more to a balanced life.Shannon authentically shares her thoughts on dance, recovery, competing, advocating, and parenting. Her intentional approach to every life endeavor is refreshing and inspiring.Show Notes(3:10) Life now, growing up with Grandma and Irish dance…(8:15) How did the performance aspect of dance translate into successes in running?(11:10) “The more that you can be present, and react to what's coming around you and utilize those strengths and skills that you've sharpened through training, that's when you have the highest likelihood of success.”(14:22) The family bonding experience of dance and sports…(17:16) A transition to running and the impact of a coach…(20:25) “The role of a coach is to lay the fundamentals... if you want to be good, if you want to be great, it's not going to happen at the end of high school. And probably not even at the end of college, it's going to happen through year after year of hard work... And it's teaching those lessons of how to show up and be a good teammate and ultimately reach that mountaintop over years of consistent effort.”(23:22) An injury and a career turning point…(24:51) “After feeling my feelings, which I did for a little bit, I really focused on understanding the root of the problem and making a thoughtful and patient plan to be back to my best fitness in a year from where I was rather than, "I have to be ready by the fall," or, "I have to be ready by indoors…" Let's just go through this recovery process in the way that it needs to be done.”(29:04) Getting “permission” to be patient…(31:31) The secret to getting the best out of yourself when the stakes are the highest…(35:28) “I describe it like the pendulum. You can't swing this way if you don't swing that way. And, so really trying to find that balance in life so that you can be ready and willing and in the right space, mentally, physically, and heart, when it matters most.”(36:00) Imagining More…(40:25) On deciding to be a Mom… “I wanted to make sure she knew that she was my first priority, and I'm trying to make sure that she doesn't ever resent running because it took me away from her. I try to include her in what I'm doing as much as possible. And it brings me such joy that she gets to interact with world champions and Olympians and incredible, incredible people.”(44:15) “If you create a structure for success, our women will come back and do amazing things, but we really need to make it a more supportive, inclusive system.”(45:42) What does Go Be More mean? “I'm really proud to have been someone that didn't let the norms around me set my expectations for myself and that instead it was really, how can I go be more? How can I be the best version of myself? And as much as possible, trying to define what that is, rather than what has been. In this episode of Justice in Motion we discuss the stories behind told surrounding the recent shootings in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of its recent event celebrating Communities Against Hate, Social Justice Film Institute Executive Director Aurora Martin invited Advisory Council members Vivian Hua, Glenn Morey and Andy Chan to discuss their experiences as AAPI storytellers and their vision for how film – particularly who is in front of and behind the camera – can bear witness and elevate voices for equity and justice. Words matter. The stories and images that are projected into the public have real life consequences in who is seen, heard, and valued. We mourn the people murdered in the Georgia mass shooting. Most of those targeted were women of Asian descent. All were people with stories, dreams, lives, and family. They had so much more life to experience with their loved ones, beyond the headlines we are left with: Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michels, Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue. This tragic loss did not occur in isolation. It is the result of patterns of hate with an extensive history, which people within Asian American communities have been reporting for a long time. It will take every one of us to unravel these patterns. Please speak up. Don't be silent. And listen to people who are hurting right now, especially women of Asian descent. Thank you for listening. If that’s the case… fix yourself. If you HAVE already listened to it, this is one of a handful of episodes that i believe is worth a second or even third listening for everyone - whether you’re currently in uniform, hung it up a long time ago, or never wore a uniform. Andy brings over 20 years of experience helping more than 11k students at both Stanford University and Wake Forest figure out their next career move. Why Listen: In previous episodes, several of our guests have talked about Tuck’s Next Step program - which is an accelerated way for military Veterans (and elite athletes) to go deep on learning business skills without having to spend two years getting an MBA. While we do talk about the Next Step program in this interview, we spend the bulk of our time talking about takeaways relevant to any military Veteran, such as: why it’s just as valuable to DISPROVE an potential career path as it is to find the right career path. We talk about why Next Step pairs elite athletes with Veterans for their curriculum and how much these two groups have in common - I honestly had never put this together, and when Margaux explained it it made incredible sense. We talk about the skills that will make Veterans successful in the civilian workforce, we talk about patience and flexibility, and all sorts of other tips that you’ll be able to put to use right away. The world is watching HK's protests. Since June, people are accusing government of disbelieving its citizen. Protesters were asking 5 demands: one, the bill must be withdrawn; two, the chief executive must resign; three, the government must retract its characterisation of the violent clashes as “riots”; four, there must be a full independent inquiry into the actions of the police and; five, everyone arrested in respect of the clashes must be unconditionally freed. Chief executive Carrie Lam announced “The bill is dead” on July 9th after a month of protests. However the extradition law might be reopened unless it is withdrawn. In the future, anyone could be detained by police in HK if the extradition bill would exist. Last week, leaders of former democratic group Scholarism which lead Umbrellas movement, Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Andy Chan was arrested for unclear reason. Joshua had only been released from jail last June. The controversy extradition law enables Chinese authorities to send people to china from Hong Kong for hoax charges. First demand must be made. Carrie Lam confessed her secret plea of resignation. Today, an audio relate to Carrie Lam was leaked. It was obtained by Reuters. It is said she would quit if she had choice. She sounds full of emotion. But, very same day, she made a public comment of denial about resignation and showed a disappointment to the informer of this audio. This political strife will make another disbelief in Hong Kong's government. In my view, there is a huge structural problem. Lack of communication between protesters caused this huge political mess in Hong Kong. Last night's ABC TV program “four courners” was about Hong Kong's protests. Program interviewed one of the senators of Hong Kong government. He claimed protests have no leaders. But, the Interviewer returned “Because the police arrest them?” As I explained, Hong Kong's police catch protest's leaders for no reasons. Government and citizens are escalating tensions. It seems there are no representatives of these democratic actions. The last demands are not likely to be wished. Since June, more than 1,000 people were arrested for public disorder or whatever reasons. Hong Kong's police launched various weapons to hurt its citizens in spite of protester's peaceful demands. It is said, the police have tried not to drag on protests like 2014 umbrella movement. Police HQ claimed some of the protesters as riot at very first weekend to excuse themselves using weapons. Pro-democracy MP Fernando Cheung was trying to stop protesters breaking into the parliament on July 1st, 22th anniversary of the island handover. He said ”To much suppress the public supports were there even after they stormed into the Legislative Council building. This slogan of not being divisive and that we stay together whether we are the peaceful ones or the more radical ones, we stay together in the movement, seems to be working.” He said in the four courner's interview. Violence met a public understanding in this movement. You cannot be optimistic about Hong Kong. Recent HK's protests are showing firm ties between protesters and civilians. More and more civil workers showing supports to them. We are watching revolutionary movements in Hong Kong's protest. What would happen on October 1 when Chinese communist party will celebrate 70th anniversary of its founding of the People's Republic of China? We need to prepare for the worst scenario.

It's a well-established fact Starfleet's track record for promoting great officers is pretty darn unassailable, but can the same be said about its Academy's top cadet picks? This week brash, fresh-faced youngster hosts Cam Smith and Tyler Orton, along with hotshot guest Andy Chan, enlist in the organization's prestigious, yet often dubiously organized, training school in order to figure out why so many of its students go bizarrely astray. From the smarmy cover-up tactics of Nova Squadron leader Nicholas Locarno, to DS9's highly unorthodox elite Red Squad unit and Star Trek 2009's smug take on the Kobayashi Maru, no helpful reference material is left unanalyzed in this daunting research assignment. Lastly, to conclude their report, the trio debate whether the concept of Starfleet Academy could ever possibly sustain a future movie or series. Right-click to download.Read more »

Does the Cause and Effect/Groundhog Day formula yield another winner for the franchise, or does it go down in spectacular flames? In addition, the trio debate whether this new show is officially the hardest partying in the Trek-verse, as well as determine whether Harry Mudd's unexpectedly speedy return is welcome or not.
