In this episode, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest dive headfirst into the labyrinthine world of medical mysteries, sharing stories of patients that leave them scratching their heads in amazement. The Docs sink their teeth into a case of porphyria, a rare genetic disorder that can make you feel like you're auditioning for a vampire movie. They recount the tale of a man who, under the light of the full moon, would experience excruciating abdominal pain and a skin sensitivity that made him hiss at the mere thought of sunlight. The Docs emphasise the importance of recognising such rare conditions, lest you mistake your patient for a creature of the night. Why do some patients think they can outsmart their doctors? The conversation takes a hilarious turn when they discuss a patient who attempted to score drugs by pretending to have every ailment in the medical textbook. Doctor Guest recounts the saga of a man who complained of back pain, headaches, and a vague condition that magically responded only to the strongest painkillers. Coincidence?  The doctors laugh about how the patient's Oscar-worthy performance fell apart when he couldn't remember which leg he was supposed to be limping on. They highlight the importance of a thorough medical history and a keen eye for inconsistencies, proving that sometimes, being a doctor is a bit like being Sherlock Holmes. What's the wildest psychiatric case you've ever encountered? Doctor Guest then regales listeners with some of his most memorable psychiatric cases. He talks about a patient with myxoedema madness, a condition that was successfully diagnosed thanks to Guest's watching history. But the pièce de résistance was the woman who was convinced she was a poached egg. Doctor Guest describes how she wouldn't sit on a chair unless it was a piece of toast on it! The doctors discuss the complexities of such diagnoses and the importance of empathy and creativity in treatment. Why is treating chronic conditions like schizophrenia so challenging? The episode takes a more serious tone as The Docs delve into the challenges of treating chronic conditions like schizophrenia. They discuss the case of a man who ended up believing that ‘Prince Philip was in a helicopter wielding a mind-extracting ray gun' - just a royal misunderstanding. The doctors explain how such conditions require a comprehensive approach, combining medication, therapy, and sometimes a bit of humour to build trust with patients. This episode is a rollercoaster of emotions, blending humour with the sobering realities of medical practice. It underscores the need for a holistic approach, continuous education, and a dash of creativity in the ever-evolving field of medicine. Let's all do our part to break the stigma and help 'prescribe' a better future!—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Drizzle the remaining oil around the edge of the rosti and allow it to flow down to the bottom. Place the pan into the oven. and bake for 30 minutes.  After this time, remove the pan and flip the rosti out onto a board to segment into wedges to serve, Serve with poached eggs, black pudding and creamed spinach.   For the creamed spinach:  Heat the oil in a sauce pan, add the chopped onion and sauté for 1 minute. Add the white wine and reduce slightly. Pour in the cream, return to the boil, then reduce the heat. Simmer for 10 minutes. Drop the spinach in, bring it back to the boil, then remove from the heat. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the vinegar and create a gentle vortex in the water by swirling it in a circle with a spoon. Reduce the heat to low and carefully crack the eggs into the water one at a time. Continue gently stirring in a circular motion to keep the egg whites from getting too wispy. Cook for 3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the eggs to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.Schmear the bottom of two bowls with the lemony yogurt (about a couple tablespoons each), then top with 2 poached eggs. Drizzle with the harissa (I like using the oil that settles on top—use more than you think you need). Mound the tabbouleh next to the eggs, sprinkle everything with Aleppo and sea salt, and serveFreekeh-Celery TabboulehIn a large bowl, mix together the freekeh, parsley, dill, and celery. Add the olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, and salt and mix once more to combine. Is there a recipe you'd like to hear us make? This Negi Confit with Whole Grain Mustard Vinaigrette and a Poached Egg is an updated twist on the French classic poached leeks with sauce gribiche. In place of traditional leeks, Chef Toni Sakaguchi from The Culinary Institute of America uses its Japanese cousin-- a succulent and fragrant negi, which has a garlic-like aroma and sweet earthy flavor. She places the poached negi on top of arugula, drizzled with vinaigrette, and tops it with a poached egg. Get the recipe for Negi Confit and see a video with closed captions here! Designed by Phil Walker-Harding and a 2016 Spiel Des Jahres Nominee is a game about placing rocks, sailing boats, and getting in each other's way all the while. There isn't much more to it than that in this incredibly simple poached egg. I mean game. Will Jake and Brendan find this poached egg of a game to be bland, or will a perfectly runny yolk, fluffy texture, and pinch of salt prove that a poached egg alone can be more than you ever expected and all you'll ever need. I'm losing faith in this metaphor as I go. Anyways, dig in into this week's episode. Music Credits Thank you to Hembree for our intro and outro music from their song Reach Out. Go ahead and grab the ingredients below (Eden starts listing them at 4:25) before starting the episode.Poached Eggs with Freekeh Tabouleh, Harissa & YogurtServes 2Poached Eggs with Freekeh Tabbouleh1 teaspoon kosher salt2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar4 large eggs1/4 cup plain yogurt with a large pinch of salt2 tablespoons harissa, store-bought or homemade, plus more as neededFreekeh-Celery Tabbouleh (below)Aleppo pepper or red chile flakesFlaky sea saltFreekeh-Celery Tabbouleh2 cups cooked cracked freekeh2 cups chopped fresh parsley2 cups chopped fresh dill2 celery stalks, finely diced1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oilGrated zest and juice of 1 lemon1 teaspoon kosher saltPoached Eggs with Freekeh TabboulehFill a medium pot with about 5 inches of water and add the kosher salt. Over easy :sunny side up的升级版。 Over medium:over easy的升级版。 Over well: over medium的升级版。 Over hard:over well的升级版。
