Our latest Live Music & Me guest was the singer/songwriter Xan Tyler. We were pretty sure that Xan would have some pretty good stories to share, and she did. From a first gig at Knebworth, to travelling to NYC for a first gig date, to missing Patti Smith playing at the Doune The Rabbit Hole festival, there was plenty going on. Xan also got mentions for 2 gig venues we haven't had before ( the Panopticon Glasgow & the Byron Bay Blues Festival, Australia), and, more importantly, gave us the lowdown on how to get the best seats at Ronnie Scotts ( if you are female) Oh, and let's not forget the tribute band WhamDuran. No, really....We had great fun doing this one, hope you enjoy it too. Stay safe PS Her 'one live album to own' recommendation was so good, we purchased a copy.
Send us a textToday I'm talking with a great up and coming blues player from the U.K - Thomas Heppell From the vibrant South Coast of the UK to stages across the nation, join Thomas as he crafts the next chapter in UK blues. With a style encapsulating the heart of Blues, the energy of Rock & Roll, and the sophistication of Jazz (sometimes if you're lucky), Thomas can command a solo stage or drive the rhythm in his dynamic three-piece ensemble. His musical journey has seen him share the limelight with established acts such as Albert Lee, Dan Patlanksy, Chicken Shack, Catfish, Alice Armstrong, Connor Selby, Brave Rival and The Cinelli Brothers. In 2022, he graced stages alongside household names like Anton du Beke of Strictly Come Dancing fame. He's also left his mark at illustrious venues and events such as The 100 Club, Tuesday Night Club, Ronnie Scotts, Lincoln Jazz Cafe, Broadstairs Blues Bash, Swanage Blues Festival, and Weyfest. His EP, 'Be My Home', not only received airwaves love from Jazz FM and Blues Radio UK but also secured him nominations at the UK Blues Awards 2023. With nods for Best Young, Emerging, and Acoustic Blues Artist, it's evident Thomas is a force to be reckoned with in British Blues.Become a plus member now: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribe Download the Triad Method: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/the-triad-method/Support the showTo get your hands on THE TRIAD METHOD: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/product/the-triad-method/Become a Blues Guitar Show Member: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribeHead over to www.thebluesguitarshow.com to subscribe to the mailing list
This London born drummer started his music career in the mid 80s as drummer and co founder of cult space-rock band Ozric Tentacles. Juggling a busy gig and festival schedule along with art school commitments, he completed his degree at Middlesex Polytechnic in graphic design and then promptly returned to music. His influences range from John Bonham, Phil Colins, Sly Dunbar, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobbam, Bernard Purdie, Alphonse Mouson, Jeff Poccaro, Tony Williams and Lenny White. Joining Acid Jazz act The Sandals as lead guitarist in 1990 saw tours follow and soon after he was introduced to Acid Jazz' new signing Jamiroquai completing frontman JK's new live band line up as their drummer. The band was quickly signed to Sony and he went on to record on the classic chart topping debut Emergency on Planet Earth LP playing drums, some guitar and co-writing the song If I Like It I Do It. A hectic schedule of touring and worldwide promotion followed, including the release of singles Too Young To Die, Blow Your Mind and Emergency on Planet Earth. Leaving the band in 94 and together with musician mates, funky guitar maverick from The Brand New Heavies Simon Bartholomew and bass player Nick Seymour, they formed the supergroup Akimbo also signed to Acid Jazz label. The band headlined Londons' Soho Jazz festival two years running appearing at Ronnie Scotts and Madame JoJo's Deep funk sessions hosted by legendary rare funk Dj and collector Keb Darge. By 1999 Nick and Keb Darge started their own independent label Deep Funk Records. Other collaborations include soul jazz keyboardist Jessica Lauren, Nu soul prodigies Vannessa Simon and Omar, FBI, Raw Deal and The Superphonics. Countless gigs, sessions and jams continue to this day with many of Londons top funk and soul musicians.

Free tickets to see Judith at the Jazz Cafe London on Monday 24th of July. www.judithowen.nethttps://www.instagram.com/judithowenmusichttps://twitter.com/judithowenJudith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/ jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. The latest iteration of Owen began with the arrival of her 13th album, Come On & Get It. The project is rooted in her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers - Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee - whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (along with Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The album was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans - the city Owen now calls home - with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis, Evan Christopher, Ricardo Pascal and many more. The result is the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project. With the London Times calling it ‘one of the most joyous releases of the year', and having garnered support from flagship Jazz radio stations Jazz FM in the UK, TSF in France, and plays across NPR stations in the US, the album has already reached over a million streams on Spotify. Owen kicked off 2023 performing to thrilled audiences in Europe with sold out shows in both Paris and Milan. Accompanied by her All Star New Orleans band ‘the Gentlemen Callers', Owen's live shows are an ‘exercise in confidence' as she “lights up the room with her red hair and her charisma.” “In a snap of her fingers, she takes her .. audience with her, and dictates the tempo to her musicians with a naturalness that is almost divine.” [Toute la Culture] Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and a headline show promoted by Jazz FM at London's Jazz Cafe, before touring across the US in the fall. Judith Owen is co-creator and co-host of the annual “Christmas Without Tears” charity variety show, alongside husband Harry Shearer, that has featured guests including Steven Merchant, Tim Minchin, Catherine O'Hara, and many others. Last November I had the absolute pleasure and privilege to interview my dear friend and vocal powerhouse, Carol Grimes. In this interview we explore her decades spanning career paying particular attention to her broad range of singing styles and genres. The following, which I took from the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club website in London, gives you a bit more of an inkling of her stature as a singer and the deep respect she commands as a vocalist, especially in the UK music scene. Enjoy! Carol Grimes is one of the finest singers in British music. Her deeply personal project, 'The Singer's Tale', is an autobiographical show combining theatre, music and a grooving band! The show weaves its stories, sometimes shady, mad and bad, but with music and song at their heart. Street Busker to Ronnie Scotts, from Notting Hill to Nashville and Memphis to San Francisco from Hackney to Texas and Eastern Europe but always returning to London. This raw, in your face, sublime performer takes you with her on a musical journey through her extraordinary life. CAROL GRIMES A much-loved performer infusing folk, blues and jazz, came to the notice of the public when she joined the band Delivery in 1969 and recorded one album before departing for a solo career. Her debut solo album, Warm Blood (1974), was recorded with members of Area Code 615 and the Average White Band. She recorded her second album in Memphis, Tennessee, with the Brecker Brothers, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and The Memphis Horns. She founded the band Eyes Wide Open in 1984. Her career expanded into teaching and working in musical theatre. In the 1990s, she worked with the choir The Shout. As you can see below, in Carol's own words, she has been, and continues to be so much more: “My name is Carol Grimes. I have been singing for my supper since the late 1960s. I began as a young, nervous Busker and fell in love with singing. Over time I became a Singer-Songwriter, Performance Poet, Voice Movement Therapist and Musical Director, founding the Sing for Joy Choirs in London, for people with neurological and other conditions and directed them for many years. I have recorded in the UK, USA, Sweden, The Isle of Jura and Poland. I became angry, seeing injustice, poverty and cruelty all around me and became an activist. The first Musician to step up for Rock against Racism, Sexism, Reclaim the night, singing for the striking Miners, the fire service, the Brunswick Women and refugee centres. In my life, I performed both in the UK and Internationally with my own Music with wonderful musicians and for Contemporary composers such as Orlando Gough, who directed The Shout, a contemporary opera, theatre company touring internationally with them for 12 years. From Japan to South Africa Canada and the USA and beyond, including performing at the Albert Hall in the Proms as a soloist - Blimey! I had my first book ‘The Singers Tale,' published in 2018 and many songs and poems published, recorded and performed over the years. I love writing as much as I love music. Hailing from Chicago, Paulette became the lead singer with Ask Rufus and was solely responsible for introducing the group to her dearest friend, Chaka Khan. Paulette and Chaka shared the lead in Ask Rufus for some time before Paulette left the band. “I was so upset about leaving my daughter to tour with Rufus for long periods. I decided that the jingles were so lucrative that the best thing for me was to leave the group.”Moving from gig to gig, Paulette worked feverishly, and then, thanks to a recording produced by Donny Hathaway and Phil Upchurch, she was “introduced” to Quincy Jones. Upchurch, the world-famous jazz guitarist, sent a studio recording to Quincy. Shortly after that, Paulette became solo/lead singer with Quincy during his “Body Heat” tour, and he featured her on his Mellow Madness album – the title song co-written by Paulette. Next, they toured Japan, where one of Paulette's dreams came true: singing a duet live with the legendary Sarah Vaughan while Quincy conducted the orchestra. After moving to New York City, Paulette also toured and sang live with Luther Vandross and recorded with Luther on every album he recorded from Forever For Always For Love. Paulette and Luther met when she was a Harlette with Bette Midler and became fast friends because Luther loved Paulette's voice and said she and he had the most incredible blend. Paulette performed all of the Tammi Terrell duets with Marvin Gaye on his last tour, which was recorded live. “I felt like I was Marvin Gaye's kid sister. He always made me feel comfortable on stage singing with him." As one of the most in-demand background vocalists in the industry, Paulette worked with some of the best artists, performers, and producers, such as Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton, Diana Ross, Joan Osborne, Billy Idol, David Bowie, Keith Emerson, The Brecker Brothers, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Lauryn Hill, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez, Patty LaBelle, Deborah Cox, Michael Jackson, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Herbie Hancock, Anastacia, Teri Lynne Carrington. She also recorded duets with Johnny Mathis and sang a solo on Noel Pointer's last CD, arranged the background vocals, and sang on them for Noel Pointer. Paulette has performed at jazz festivals /clubs, including the International Jazz Festival in The Netherlands and Thailand, Japan, Monterey, Indonesia, China, Trinidad, Milan, Amsterdam, Moscow, and Bern, Switzerland, including Ronnie Scotts in London and the Blue Note in Milan and Tokyo. Recently at the Blue Note in Beijing, China asked back for the second time.It is also essential to note that Paulette has sung solo/ group on numerous TV commercials such as for Folgers Coffee, Kellogg, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Diet Pepsi (with Britney Spears), Cadillac, Cover Girl, American Express, Celebrex, MasterCard, United Airlines, Budweiser Beer, Coors, eBay, and Mercedes. “I sang so many national commercials that I can't even name them. I did 600, at least."Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. With profound sadness, I heard the news of Jeff Beck's passing 0n 10 January 2023. His technique was unique. His imagination was limitless and he was the ultimate guitar players' player – A towering giant in the guitar world and an inspiration to the heroes of the instrument Jeff Beck's willingness to showcase emerging musical talent paid dividends with the addition of 21-year-old virtuoso bassist Tai Wilkenfield to his live band in 2007, with the same lineup touring the world in 2009 with a memorable live performance filmed at Ronnie Scott's in London. I first saw Jeff beck when he was in the Yardbirds back in the middle/late 60's – and was just astounded then by his guitar playing and have done so ever since, to me his unique style of playing was something that no one could match – over the years I have been lucky enough to see Jeff Beck a few times and listened to hours of his music. This Mix is my nod of respect to the massive talent we have just lost – I think myself fortunate to have heard and appreciate his music both Live & Recorded. In this mix, are some of my personal favourites of Jeff's music and I have tried to include many live recordings – especially when he is in collaboration with other artists - for me, that is where Jeff blossomed, shined and belonged. Also, I've put up 4 videos on our website – I recommend you watch them in order Why Jeff Beck is uncopiableJeff Beck talks music on Sky Arts TV 2013Jeff Beck – live from Ronnie Scotts – full showJeff Beck live from the woodlands – full show Thank you Jeff for all the many years of making my head nod with my eyes closed and taking me to a nice place. West End musical theatre veteran and professional singer Tracy Kashi is a warm, friendly and versatile vocalist and musician, with an Iranian, Israeli background. Based in North London, she has worked as an actress and singer and appeared many times at the Royal Festival Hall. She made her West End debut in Rent at The Prince of Wales and has worked with stars such as Petula Clark, Idina Menzel, Bobby McFerrin. She can be found singing Jazz at Ronnie Scotts or Kurt Weil at The Royal Festival Hall, and is the featured voice in the musical score for ITV’s Maigret with Rowan Atkinson. Her new show My Cancer Gap Year is an uplifting musical about her very recent experience with breast cancer—from shock diagnosis to tentative recovery—and combines comedy song and candid advice. This is Your London Legacy. “What do we humans do when stuff is hard to talk about? Very often we turn to humor to diffuse and deflect and communicate.” [10:26] Tracy doesn’t identify as a “cancer survivor” or undertaking a “cancer journey”. She feels as though she has had an experience with a disease and is still here. Hence the name of her show—Cancer Gap Year—which succinctly sums up how she feels about her experience, without diminishing the struggles that have come with her diagnosis and treatment. The show ties together song and comedy to convey Tracy’s experience—a mashup that she openly admits was difficult deliver, as she had never done any sort of stand up comedy before. She didn’t want to offend anyone by making light of sensitive material, but in the end she feels she was able to be authentic about the ridiculous parts of her “gap year” while treating the disease others may have experienced with respect. Tracy admits there was a bit of imposter syndrome at play, something she has had to overcome over the course of her career as a performer. However, her 20 minute version of the show was a bit of a trial run, and one Tracy was quite happy with. “Perfect is the enemy of the good.” [32:58] During Tracy’s diagnosis and treatment she took notes on everything from first finding her lump after a grimy ride on the Northern Line, to talking about bureaucratic insensitivities and her response to treatment—Tracy and her husband latched onto the ridiculous and laughed about it. It was healing for them. The show is Tracy’s way of doing something useful with her experience; raising awareness, raising money, showing respect and gratitude for everyone that helped her, and helping others cope and heal with the power of laughter and performance. If you are interested in seeing Tracy perform My Cancer Gap Year you can sign up at TracyKashi.com (http://www.tracykashi.com/welcome-1) to get gig info, watch videos, and find out more about her work. Tracy can also be booked for coaching. She has two upcoming shows; one on July 25th and another (the big one) on October 31st on the main stage at JW3. Joanna Eden is a jazz singer and singer/songwriter based near Cambridge in the UK. She has shared stages with Jamie Cullum, the Buena Vista Social Club & The Blockheads. She mentored a young Sam Smith for nine years and released her 4th album 'Truth Tree' this October. Joanna's career is all about finding a balance between performing, creating and sharing skills and experience. In this varied and exploratory conversation we talked about music education, including some of Joanna’s problematic experiences in her own musical upbringing, what it’s like being a singer fronting a band, and her own song writing process. Jo was a judge on the TV talent show ‘All Together Now’, and she found this a tricky experience for various reasons, which we discuss. She recently took part in a community project for people with dementia, working with music therapists from Anglia Ruskin University, called ‘Together in Sound’. She describes her experience of this project, including how she related to the music therapists, and her perceptions of music therapy as a profession. Ola Kvernberg is a Norweigan violinist. If you like gypsy jazz, you may know him from the album 'Angelo is back in town' with Angelo Debarre. Even in those early recordings I feel it is clear he had a progressive voice, he does not stick to the usual 'violinistic' techniques and lines but has his own sound and approach to the changes... Ola writes alot of music nowadays, much of it is alot closer to EDM than swing or gypsy jazz. I caught up with Ola when he was performing in London at Ronnie Scotts with the Tronheim Orchestra. We really were rushed as our schedules only just matched up for an hour and we had difficulty finding anywhere quiet. We opted for the park down the way from Ronnies so the sound quality is not amazing and there is alot of background noise. Aside from these difficulties, Ola was great to chat to and is a lovely dude, I hope you enjoy listening.... The music at the beginning is 'Harlots House' from Ola Kvernbergs album 'The Mechanical Fair' The outro music is Benny Golsons 'Whisper Not' recorded by me and my band Latchepen
Coming from a broadcasting family with a mother who sang opera over breakfast, Kate has spent 20 years touring theatrical shows about other people’s voices and stories – hiding behind the smooth sophistication of Peggy Lee, the bold blues of Bessie Smith, the fragile tones of Dory Previn. But she always had another nagging voice in her head saying, “What’s my story and why aren’t I singing it?’ In this talk, she describes her path to finding her own voice by embracing vulnerability, singing with others - and realising that the place where everything goes wrong, is where the magic is. Kate has released five albums between 1999 and 2014, produced 6 international theatrical shows and appeared regularly on national radio. She’s toured the world with her one woman shows, selling out venues like the Festival Hall and Ronnie Scotts and working with some of the best jazz musicians in the country. Her latest album Songbirds features original songs recorded a capella, layering her voice instead of using instruments, with techniques inspired by learning from vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin in New York. Recorded at the 5x15 Bristol event in January 2017. 5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. There are only two rules - no scripts and only 15 minutes each. Today we talk to legendary jazz and fusion musician Nathan Haines. We discuss his open minded approach to music, the pointless concept of ‘genre’, playing at Ronnie Scotts, John Scofield, seeing Miles Davis live, writing and recording, balancing his career and family life and his background growing up in a very musical family and his natural progression in to music.
A live recording of a GBA recorded at #edfringe 2014 at the Royal Oak as part of the PBH Free Fringe. This recording is unedited and posted in a no frills way due to the intensive workload of the festival, and for that reason these shows will also not have shownotes attached to them. 18th August: Rosie Wilby: http://www.rosiewilby.com/ Rosie Wilby is a comedian, musician, writer and broadcaster based in London. As a comedian, she has performed at Sydney Mardi Gras, The Comedy Store, Latitude Festival and on Radio 4. As a musician she has performed at Glastonbury Festival, Ronnie Scotts and on Carlton TV.
Back to the 80's. One of the evenings where Thameside Radio 90.2 changed transmition sites throughout the show so reception quality varies. Still it kept the DTI away! Also some of the Bob Edwards show is missing from the recording. Sarah was at a halloween party till 6 am the previous night! When did she do her homework? She out a poem written by a listener called "It's a Typical Day". There is also a big plug for Rudi who have a single called "When I was Dead". Mark is in Ealing Broadway giving away tickets for Acellerator in concert at Ronnie Scotts. Bob is trying to give away a kitten! Everyone is looking forward to the Thameside Radio boat trip.A hung over Intrepid Birdman has some amazing new jingles and a funky new version of the Thameside Radio theme at the start of his show. (Do you know who recorded them - I never did find out. Please email or comment.) He also plays the Sir Henry & His Butlers - Rolo sensation which is weird. More new Thameside 90.2 listeners: Richard Baldwyn of Feltham, Stephen Garstang, Surbiton High School, Tiffin School, Jamming Fanzine (who are writing an article on Thameside), Tony Fletcher, Rough Trade Records, Dave Cutcliffe
Sue Lawley's guest this week is the jazz musician Stan Tracey. He's been at the heart of the British Jazz scene since the 1960s when he was resident pianist at Ronnie Scotts. It was at that time he wrote what has been called the greatest of all British jazz albums - his Under Milk Wood suite.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: Mood Indigo by Duke Ellington and His Orchestra Book: Crazy Like A Fox by S J Perelman Luxury: Film: Oh Mister Porter
