If the title wasn't a giveaway, we have learned that Charles Martinet will not longer be the voice of Mario in future Mario games, tis a sad day in gaming. Yet at the same time Gamescom is currently going on in Germany, and we got a wealth of gaming news to talk about. Activision pulled the lid off of the Modern Warfare III, Atari is trying to make another comeback, and oh yeah, Microsoft is selling Activision streaming rights to Ubisoft. Meanwhile in Hollywoodland, the WGA continue their strike and call out the big three, Disney announces a slew of physical releases for digital only shows, and Ahsoka is the best live action Star Wars show, full stop. Plus I give my honest opinion about my top 10 favorite 80s movies.

This is Matt Reustle and today we are breaking down the mobile gaming industry. It was several months ago that I was reading an industry report for our Business Breakdown on Electronic Arts. I was shocked to see that mobile gaming was now 50% of the overall gaming market. What really stood out to me was just how different the business model is. You have smaller game developers operating with a completely different monetization model. It's the same industry but with drastically different strategies. To break down the industry, I'm joined by Eric Seufert. Eric spent his early career in the heart of mobile gaming, notably as a Vice President at Rovio, which developed Angry Birds. Today, Eric is the creator of Mobile Dev Memo, a publication focused on mobile monetization. For this conversation, Eric details the history and inflection points for mobile gaming, what the market structure looks like today, and how regulation and privacy have impacted the business model and strategies. Lots of Microsoft news and not much of it good. Those little flying crashing exploding birds get a new home and we may actually get to catch the snitch and whomp a bludger or two in an upcoming game. http://www.joystickandmouse.com http://shop.joystickandmouse.com/ Show Notes In a low key move on April 6th, Microsoft shut down emulation on the XBox consoles. This had the small but passionate emulator community up in arms. It brings up the question for us though ... This week, that became very evident with the departure of Frank O'Connors. Welcome to the Power Hour Podcast. In this episode Brian and Jim discuss the following. Unrecorded #rovio #squareenix
Sega has officially confirmed that it is planning to acquire Rovio Entertainment, a deal that will see the video game company pay $776 million for the Angry Birds developer. Sega says that acquiring Rovio will allow it to strengthen its own mobile game portfolio, and at the same time, it'll be able to use its video game console expertise to help Rovio expand beyond mobile devices. We discuss this new acquisition and try to decide whether this counts for Donnie's prediction that Sega "will be back in a big way."We'll also be talking about how the Nintendo hacker Gary Bowser has been released from prison but still owes millions, how Jack Black's "Peaches" from The Super Mario Bros Movie has hit the Billboard Hot 100, and ten rumored video games that could still release in the second half of 2023.Finally, Donnie takes us all the way back to April 1996 in Retro Rewind. We love our sponsors! Sega buying Rovio for $775mm is just the tip of the iceberg in a jam packed episode. Phil explains how CoD's latest kerfluffle breaks the social contract with its players. Kress pull out the classic "two drunks holding each other up" catchphrase to describe the Rovio acquisition. Ethan implores you to remember Phantasy Star Online 2, and declares that Monster Hunter Go will be a surefire hit for Niantic. Laura cracks the code on both Makeover Match and Monopoly Go. And special guest Jayne Peressini makes her TWiG debut to break down what record breaking CS:GO skin sales do and do not say about the viability of marketplace royalties for web3 gaming.
