Obesity is one of the major risk factors for developing kidney disease, which is measured through the body mass index or BMI. This measurement factors into the process for both living donors and transplant recipients. On today's episode, you'll learn how to measure your BMI and hear from both kidney patients on how managing their weight affected their kidney health. In this episode we spoke with,  Carol Murray is a Quality Manager for Boston Scientific in Minnesota. On June 12, 2019, she donated a kidney to her husband who was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease in 2015. Introduced to the National Kidney Foundation too and through the transplant journey Carol became passionate about ways to draw attention to need for living donors as well as advocating for living donors. Working with the National Kidney Foundation on a local level she has participated in the Big Ask:Big Give, Kidney Walks, and Advocacy Day. With a strong desire to provide help and hope for others Carol has been involved in several roles with a few different non-profit organizations. Carol has a B.S degree in Quality Management from the University of Minnesota Crookston, and an A.A.S in Manufacturing Technology from Hennepin Technical College.  Golnaz Ghomeshi Friedman, RD, is a Senior Dietitian and Certified Clinical Transplant Dietitian for UC Davis Health Transplant Program and has been working in this role since 2014. Golnaz values the importance and impact of nutrition in the transplant population and has been involved in a variety of projects directly impacting patient care. She has developed and modified policies that have made a significant impact on the decision-making process for transplant patient selection. Golnaz has worked with the transplant team and served as co-investigator on various research projects including those centered around assessment of malnutrition, functional status and frailty in transplant candidates. Melanie Pina was diagnosed with lupus nephritis in 2018, and in 2021 she became a peritoneal dialysis patient. Melanie started sharing her journey online since April 2022 and recently had weight loss surgery to be on the transplant list. Ancient religions had requirements for admission into sacred spaces - usually sacrifices and purification rites. The requirements had nothing to do with true beliefs or moral behavior. This was true of pagan religions and of many in ancient Israel as well. There was, however, a philosophical school in ancient Israel that was particularly concerned about truth and morality. We consider an ancient Israelite poem that gives conditions for entering Yahweh's tent. What are the conditions? Not animal sacrifices or other typical ritual demands, but instead, the conditions are exclusively moral, and the description of the moral conditions makes it evident that the author was a proponent of truth-based morality. If the poem sounds familiar, you've probably read translations of it before. It's known as "Psalm 15" in the book of Psalms of the later Hebrew tradition and "Psalm 14" in the book of Psalms of the later Greek tradition. Originally, though, the poem was an independent composition. Since ancient naming traditions often named something according to the first line, this poem might have originally been called, "Yahweh, Who May Travel Into Your Tent?" Victor Houteff (founder of the Davidian movement) took a progressive stance on health reform. In other words, rather than looking for medical/health advice from Ellen White or the doctors of her day, he recognized that knowledge of health advances and we need to advance with it. He pointed out that Ellen White recommended reading the best authors on health. If God had revealed the specifics of healthy living, there would be no need to turn to these lesser authorities. So, the fact that Ellen White herself used and recommended these earthly authorities shows that she didn't receive her knowledge of food values and medicine from God. The best sources of medical/health information change over time as knowledge increases, so we ought to always seek the best sources of our own day. Houteff then stresses that the true health authorities are not those who label their products and professions "health," "nature," "drugless," and so on - and who try to prejudice people against approved professional places. He refers to those who run these alternative "so-called health shops" as quacks, and he warns against using their services. Houteff's teachings on this subject have clear implications for how Davidians should approach health today. Furthermore, what Houteff pointed out regarding Ellen White's recommendation to read the best authors on health is a lesson all SDAs can benefit from. Most Christians have a spiritualistic worldview - they believe in proposed "spiritual" (aka non-physical) realities. The distinctive doctrines of the Millerites moved them on a trajectory towards materialism (the belief that all that exists is made of matter). After the Great Disappointment, the Millerite movement fractured and different groups formed - heading either back toward spiritualism, maintaining the Millerite position, or moving toward full-fledged materialism. Those who formed the SDA church became full-fledged materialists. This episode explains how the Great Disappointment (and the SDA explanation of it) was instrumental in making that happen. The MongoDB Data API lets you read and modify data in MongoDB Atlas over HTTP. You don't need any additional MongoDB drivers, libraries, or connection strings; just a standard HTTP client and a valid API key. The Data API's endpoints expose actions that are similar to the standard query methods available in MongoDB drivers.
