We need to keep in mind that the Bible in early Christian times was more often heard when read aloud to a group than read privately; very few early Christians owned copies of the Bible, and some did not known how to read. This is why preaching was so central to the early Christian worship. Teaching the Bible involved hearing more than reading. The early Christian preachers implemented what rhetoricians had learned and practiced. Consider these traits of of the Greco-Roman rhetoricians. They" 1. Authoritatively proclaimed the truth. 2. Spoke with urgency & without hesitation. 3. Invoked metaphors to sensorily involve hearers' imaginations and emotions. 4. Their statements were emphatic and all other ideas are outrageous. 5. Pronouncements have global and eternal ramifications. Rhetoric is the art and science of persuasion. Effective rhetoric involves: relevant content and engaging style leading to responsive persuasion. What preachers can learn from an understanding of the Ancient Greek principles of Rhetoric: (i) Preach with a sense of clarity about you are saying. (ii) Prepare your message around the rhetorical structure. (iii) Plan what you will stress and how you will do it (especially your conclusion and exhortation). (iv) Practice before you preach

Today, we delve into a political phenomenon that has captivated, confused, and sometimes enraged observers: 'Trump Confusion as Power.' This isn't about accidental missteps, but rather a deliberate, unconventional approach to leadership that leverages unpredictability as a strategic tool. For years, analysts have puzzled over Donald Trump's seemingly chaotic communication and governance. But what if this apparent disorder is actually a calculated strategy? The core idea behind 'Trump Confusion as Power' suggests that his unpredictable statements, inconsistent policy pronouncements, and abrupt shifts are intentional. By constantly generating confusion, he aims to keep opponents off balance, making it difficult for them to anticipate or counter his moves. This unpredictability also allows him to dominate public narratives, ensuring he remains the central figure in political and social conversations. It's a pragmatic, realist approach that often requires observers to focus on his decisions, rather than conventional policy documents, to truly understand his objectives.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/conspiracy-theories-exploring-the-unseen--5194379/support.

In recent years, organizations have started to experiment with skills-based hiring by dropping degree requirements and other credentials in job postings to unlock new talent populations. However, a fully-realized skills-based hiring approach demands deep change in talent processes and hiring manager practices. To this point, most organizations have been unable to weave this method into the fabric of their talent strategy. Joseph Fuller, professor at Harvard Business School, rejoins the Talent Angle to discuss his latest research: “Skills-Based Hiring: The Long Road from Pronouncements to Practice.” Joseph shares data to show the extent to which skills-based hiring commitments have translated to meaningful action, and offers practical guidance to help organizations broaden the aperture of their talent pools. Joseph Fuller is a professor of management practice in general management at Harvard Business School and co-leads the school's initiative, Managing the Future of Work. Ordained minister, Dr. Dennis Hall, addresses the difference between unbecoming political rhetoric and evil pronouncements and how it may have played a role in the assassination attempt. He points to the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 12 outlining the nine gifts of the spirit, including the spirit of discernment. Those with the gift of discernment should be providing insight into where evil pronouncements are leading our nation. Using Scripture, the responsibility of every Christian to be discerning is outlined. He points out that the gift of discernment is really the ability to think biblically. The gift of discernment can be destructive and dangerous even though it is desperately needed. We can detect what is right and wrong or true and false when we saturate our minds with the word of God. In 2016, before most people imagined that Donald Trump would become a serious contender for the Presidency, the New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik wrote about what he later called the “F-word”: fascism.  He saw Trump's authoritarian rhetoric not as a new force in America but as a throwback to a specific historical precedent in nineteen-thirties Europe.  In the years since, Trump has called for “terminating” articles of the Constitution, has celebrated the January 6th insurrectionists as political martyrs, and has called his enemies animals, vermin, and “not people,” and demonstrated countless other examples of authoritarian behavior.  In a new essay, Gopnik reviews a book by the historian Timothy W. Ryback, and considers Adolf Hitler's unlikely ascent in the early nineteen-thirties. He finds alarming analogies with this moment in the U.S.  In both Trump and Hitler, “The allegiance to the fascist leader is purely charismatic,” Gopnik says. In both men, he sees “someone whose power lies in his shamelessness,” and whose prime motivation is a sense of humiliation at the hands of those described as élites. “It wasn't that the great majority of  Germans were suddenly lit aflame by a nihilist appetite for apocalyptic transformation,” Gopnik notes. “They [were] voting to protect what they perceive as their interest from their enemies. Often those enemies are largely imaginary.”

The organisation gets religion about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).  The senior management team, led by the President, decide this is a key path for moving forward.  The upside in achieving greater innovation and creativity by embracing a more inclusive workplace is seen as the Holy Grail.  The Middle Managers are told to get behind the push on DEI.  Brilliant that getting change in Japan is so easy.  Japanese staff love change.  They want their boss to change, their subordinates to change, their colleagues to change, their clients to change, but they want to stay precisely the same.  DEI in Japan is mainly about gender issues, rather than race, religion or national identity. The male Middle Managers themselves are part of the cohort of not wanting to change, regardless of what senior management may be saying.  No one will openly oppose the pronouncements from the top, but that doesn't mean there is any real enthusiasm for change. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, a Swiss-American psychiatrist wrote a book called “On Death and Dying” which identified five stages of grief, which can be extrapolated to assist our understanding about how humans deal with DEI change.    1.     Shock The initial reaction to hearing that the organization is going to embrace change around DEI, can be very confronting for male Middle Managers and the males in their teams.  Usually, the communication in organisations around change is minimal.  Basically, senior management has made this decision, this is why and get on with it.  The lack of what is considered satisfactory explanation sets off rumours, mis-information and confusion in the ranks.  This is why companies must do a thorough job of selling DEI to the team, in depth and continuously. 2.     Denial After the initial shock of the announcement a sense of disbelief can spread and hopes that this will be a “light” intervention which won't really affect the status quo.  Japan defers to age and stage in companies and what will DEI mean for the current hierarchy?  Will there be a lessening of opportunities for males to advance, in order to meet some arbitrary ratio of female managers?  Why do we need to change at all, when this is how it has always been done?  Senior management needs to recognise these fears and directly address them.  Information vacuums will get filled with gossip, inuendo and false flags unless there is a big sales effort on the positives of change. 3.     Anger Isn't this a stupid idea from senior management? Won't this weaken the strength of the organisation, relative to our rivals and won't clients have trouble accepting the change and therefore we will lose business?  Pronouncements are clearly not going to be enough.  When DEI first popped up on the radar in Japan, companies would ask us to train the women.  I always questioned that assumption.  The kacho or section head is the key person who needs educating.  Usually a he, the kacho determines who gets coached, given delegated tasks for personal development and who gets promoted. Unless the kacho gets it, there will be an underlying resistance to DEI which will never be vocalized, but which will continue regardless.  4.     Bargaining “DEI is okay in theory, but our case is different.  We have special circumstances here and so some adjustments have to be made”.  This is typically how Middle Management whittles away at changes they don't like.  They are ninja at finding all the problems and can come up with tons of justifications to dilute the change effort, while all the while embracing the headline statements as gospel.  Naturally, there will be some flexibility needed to role out DEI programmes however senior management have to be very vigilant about how the processes are worked though. 5.     Dejection When male Middle Managers realise that this DEI change is here to stay, they can become demotivated.  They fear their years of loyal service has been devalued and their future promotion prospects have been impinged, all for a fad.  They need to be told they are valued, they have a role here and that the form needs their contribution to arm it with the creativity and innovation needed to best the competition. 6.     Letting Go People believe what they see.  When the benefits of greater inclusion become a reality, it is easier to get behind the idea, which is no longer seen as just some ivory tower theory.  Also, the consistent support for DEI from the senior leadership group underlines this isn't going away and is becoming a permanent fixture of how the organisation functions.  7.      Exploration Diversity of opinion and inclusion of different angles around decision-making is what makes the adoption of DEI an advantage inside the organisation.  If the decisions are better and if the outcomes are better, than what could have been achieved before, then this initiates a different set of responses and changes thinking about what is possible. 8.     Acceptance Gradually, it becomes clear that the worst fears were not realized. Even unexpected benefits appeared.  The doomsayers were proven wrong, the system settles down to a new reality and everyone moves forward.  Planning for these stages would be a clever move by senior management, in addition to their various pronouncements from on high.  The DEI process is a process and as such, it has to be supported all the way through these seven stages, if it is going to stick.  That requires consistent work over many years, until DEI becomes part of the culture of the organisation.  Best to plan for that from the beginning.

THE WHITE HORSE - THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE The opening chapters of Revelation Jesus Christ is presented as the LORD of the Churches. He appeals to the churches through letters sent to those seven churches of Asia. To those who merely profess faith but do not demonstrate that they are true overcomers, His message and challenge is to repent. To the true overcomers, He gives continual encouragement by His promises of eternal blessing and reward. In Revelation 5, the scroll with the seven seals in the hand of the One Who sits on the throne, the Heavenly Father, is given to the only One worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals - the Lion of Judah, the Root of David, the Lamb Who was slain, JESUS. All heaven breaks forth in praise, adoration and worship of Jesus because He is the Only Way, Truth, and Life that allows us to come to God in relationship. Pronouncements of Judgment The scene now shifts in Revelation 6 from the wonderful praise of heaven to the tragic judgments on earth. Many Bible teachers believe chapters 6-19 are describing the great tribulation to which Daniel the prophet and Jesus Christ referred. How should we understand these events? When will these events occur? How and why do the judgments happen as they do? What do the seven seals on the scroll represent? What do the seven trumpets represent? What do the seven bowls represent? In the coming weeks we will address the Four Horsemen which are the first four seals of the scroll. No matter what happens, the biggest question is, “Are You Ready?” Are you ready to make the decision to have a relationship with Jesus that will bring you to a life of strength and joy? The Cushites will be judged by the Lord and left for dead, but after this judgment they will bring tribute to the Lord of Armies at Mount Zion. Egypt will be judged by God through a civil war, and neither idols, nor spiritists, nor wise men will save them from the Lord's hand. One day in the future, however, some Egyptians would worship the God of Israel, a dramatic turn of events given that Egypt had always been superior in military might with deep cultural ties to it's own gods. Pronouncements on other cities and nations follow, including Babylon, Dumah, Arabia, Jerusalem (called the Valley of Vision, here) and Shebna.:::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

We begin with a pronouncement against Babylon, which contains assertions that they are God's chosen weapon of wrath against his disobedient people, AND that they will become desolate for their actions. Israel will return to the land and the king of Babylon will fall. Pronouncements against Philistia, Moab, and Damascus follow, and we'll conclude with a prophecy of judgment against Israel.:::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

Outlook 2022-07-18 - Take Pride In Yourself, It's Disability Pride Month

On Outlook this week, we're talking disability pride during July's Disability Pride Month. Whether it's us starting out the show talking about Brian's recent musical practice with an old friend and society's devaluing of music as an art and a skill, a skill many people with disabilities have. Or our recent guest, H May, whose short film Awaiting Tiresias highlights discussions of the continuum of both blindness and gender and the illustration of intersectionality with Hannah, a black and enslaved woman who had a disability in the 1800's. While we may not have a guest this week, it's a themed episode of our regular Mixed Bag Monday shows, with an explanation of how Disability Pride Month began. With that, we're sharing quotes from figures throughout history, organizations, acquaintances and friends, in the wide range of opinions on what it means to feel pride in living with disability or not. Kerry feels that the opposite of pride is often shame and that's something she sometimes struggles with. Brian wants us to become comfortable and confident in the use of the word “blind” to describe our disability, as the best way to arrive at feeling pride in who we are, instead of feeling shame for what we can't control. This is the difference in the medical vs the social models of disability. Pronouncements aside, disability Pride Month puts a focus on attempts to find pride in ourselves as people with disabilities (marked with a literal disability pride flag first created by Ann Magill in 2019), in how we can be proud of who we are, despite what we've been told and gone through. And in all we've contributed and continue to offer the world, that we're valued as human beings. Throughout this episode, we shared a wide array of viewpoints on whether to celebrate being disabled. If anyone has any feelings on how to better feel pride in being disabled (if you think Disability Pride Month should or should not be celebrated), or if you have any possible Outlook t-shirt design ideas, always feel free to email us: outlookonradiowestern@gmail.com Check out the article quoted in this episode from The New York Times by friend of the show M.
