Birmingham, Alabama Mayor Randall Woodfin on How Being a Son of Birmingham Shaped Him as a Leader and as a Person

Birmingham, Alabama — also known as The Magic City — is a major part of my story. I lived there for nearly 11 years, from January 2013 until December 2023; my husband is from there and I met my husband there; and, living there from age 26 to 37, it was part of my formative years as an adult. During my time in Birmingham, I worked in communications at the economic development organization the Birmingham Business Alliance, where I had the opportunity to meet Birmingham's mayor, Randall Woodfin, on a number of occasions. Sometimes those in office are one way in front of the cameras and a completely different person when the cameras are off; Mayor Woodfin was always kind, gracious, generous, and a genuinely good person — the real deal — even if it was just the two of us in a room. Mayor Woodfin won election as mayor in 2017 in a bit of a David and Goliath type victory over longtime Birmingham political mainstay William Bell; he has been in office ever since. Now, on January 21, he is coming out with a memoir, aptly titled Son of Birmingham: A Memoir, about his life, leadership, and, fascinatingly, his love of Outkast. As I tell Mayor Woodfin in this episode, we all deserve someone that loves us as much as he loves Outkast. Mayor Woodfin truly is a son of Birmingham and, having been in office since 2017, has seen the city through some difficult times, not the least of which is COVID-19. In this episode he talks about the modern day Birmingham and what the public still gets wrong about it; about being the youngest mayor in Birmingham's modern history; what it was like to win the mayoral election over seven years ago; some of the toughest situations he's faced in office; about answering the call to serve; and about his life as a husband and father now. A native of Birmingham, Mayor Woodfin attended Morehouse College and then returned to Birmingham, working at City Hall in jobs for the mayor and the City Council and for the Jefferson County Committee on Economic Opportunity. He attended the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and, after obtaining his law degree, took on a job in the City of Birmingham Law Department. Outside of his work as an assistant city attorney, he was a political organizer, working on campaigns at the local, state, and federal level. After serving on the Birmingham Board of Education, he ran for mayor and is now in his second term in office, seeking a third in 2025. He was also a featured speaker at the 2020 Democratic National Convention. I will always, always have such an affinity for Birmingham, and for Mayor Woodfin, too. Mayor Randall L. Woodfin's philosophy of “putting people first” has guided his leadership. Revitalization of the city's 99 neighborhoods is his top priority. He is focused on enhancing education for young people, fostering a climate of economic opportunity for all residents and leveraging public-private partnerships to make the city the best version of Birmingham it can be. His vision to create new education and career opportunities for students led to the Birmingham Promise, a public-private partnership that provides apprenticeships and tuition assistance to cover college costs for Birmingham high school graduates. Mayor Woodfin led a regional effort to invest in the renovation and expansion of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex making the city an emerging destination for sports and entertainment. Through Pardons for Progress, he removed a barrier from employment opportunities and offered a second chance with the mayoral pardon of 15,000 misdemeanor marijuana possession charges dating back to 1990. He entered his second term as Birmingham's 30th mayor on November 23, 2021. A graduate of Morehouse College and Samford University's Cumberland School of Law, he previously served as president of the Birmingham Board of Education.

At a time when high school students need access to high-quality job training opportunities more than ever, and businesses are eagerly looking to hire qualified talent in a range of middle skill jobs that require more than a high school diploma, but less than a four-year college degree — Bloomberg Philanthropies has committed an additional $25 million to support career and technical education programs in nine U.S. cities and across two states. This commitment highlights our founder Mike Bloomberg's belief that it's critical for states, cities, local businesses, and schools to grow career programs and pathways for students not heading to four-year college in order to gain greater economic mobility. More than 15,000 high school students have benefited from Bloomberg Philanthropies' support of career and technical education programs since 2016. This new investment brings our support of these programs to $90 million. On this episode, Jenny Sharfstein Kane of our education team sits down with Julia Baez, CEO of Baltimore's Promise, a city-wide collaborative which supports the health and education of Baltimore City youth from cradle to career. “If there was ever a time to make changes in America, this is that moment.”— Mayor Randall Woodfin, Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama   When Mayor Randall Woodfin was elected to his hometown’s highest political office at just 36, his mission was to improve the lives of every citizen by investing in youth programs, revitalizing blighted neighborhoods, eliminating food deserts, reducing crime, creating more green spaces, and encouraging more civic participation—just to name a few.   But then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, closely followed by the death of George Floyd. With communities from all over the country and world faced with these challenges, Mayor Woodfin has shown remarkable calm and clarity. Though his primary goals never shifted, it was clear that new conversations and difficult decisions had to happen.   In this episode of Leading with Genuine Care, Mayor Woodfin and I talk about how these events have impacted himself as a leader as well as those in his own community. We also discuss how leaders can take action in the fight for equality, which factors guide his decision-making, and lessons learned from the late civil rights leader John Lewis. In this episode, you’ll also learn:   Mayor Woodfin’s strategy for strengthening Birmingham Why we need to talk less and listen more What it’s like to be a mayor during the COVID pandemic How growing up in a crowded, multi-generational home influenced Mayor Woodfin Why we need to participate in our communities on every level Mayor Woodfin’s vision for a better education system Why cities are “only as strong as its lowest quality-of-life neighborhood” How to make life better for those communities Why having core values are important to guide city employees Why Mayor Woodfin says Confederate monuments are un-American How these statues demonstrate our toxic revisionist history What impact John Lewis had on Mayor Woodfin Why Mayor Woodfin enacted a mask requirement despite pushback Which two lenses Mayor Woodfin makes all COVID-related decisions through How collectivism and unity can benefit the U.S. during the pandemic Why moving past conversations alone can help heal racial divides What those in power can do to move the needle against racism And so much more.   Enjoy my inspiring and empowering conversation with Mayor Randall Woodfin.   More about Mayor Randall Woodfin: In 2017, Randall Woodfin was sworn in as mayor of Birmingham, Alabama. He’s a Birmingham native, a graduate of Morehouse University and Cumberland School of Law, and the former president of the Birmingham Board of Education.    Mayor Woodfin is dedicated to “Putting People First”—a phrase that’s central to his administration. With a new vision and energy, Mayor Woodfin wants every citizen to have the opportunity to live and work in a safe, thriving city that they’re proud to call home.    Since entering office, he’s launched plans to fight crime, eliminate food deserts, revitalize blighted neighborhoods, boost morale, and create a community where purpose-driven leaders and entrepreneurs—especially women and minorities—can achieve success.   Connect with Mayor Randall Woodfin Website: www.randallwoodfin.com City of Birmingham’s Website: https://www.birminghamal.gov Facebook: www.facebook.com/MayorRandallWoodfin Twitter: twitter.com/randallwoodfin Instagram:www.instagram.com/woodfinforbham LinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/city-of-birmingham-mayor-s-office   Follow Rob Dube on Social Media  LinkedIn:  www.linkedin.com/in/robdube  Facebook:  www.facebook.com/rob.dube.1  Twitter:  twitter.com/robddube    Rob Dube’s Website www.donothingbook.com   Sign Up for My Weekly Mailing List  Never miss an inspiring conversation about compassionate, positive leadership on the Leading with Genuine Care podcast by signing up for my mailing list! Isabel Rubio, executive director of Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, which serves the Latino immigrant community, explains the push and pull between progressiveness and regressiveness in Birmingham. In 2011, the passage of HB 56, allowed law enforcement to detain and arrest people for "reasonable suspicion" of unlawful status, creating profound fear in the community. More recently, the Latino community was an essential part of electing Randall Woodfin, a former Board member as Mayor of Birmingham and Doug Wood as US Senator. Isabel underscores the importance of organizing, advocacy, capital and assets in building community, influence and power. And, as always, Isabel advocates for the building of capacity to make all of the above possible.
