Hello and welcome back to the Constant Reader Podcast, with me Richard Sheppard. Thanks for your kind words about my last interview with James Michels, author of the Melody of Shattered Gold, which is now available on amazon. It's well worth picking up, the ending is a real gut punch, and the journey is a wild ride. Speaking of wild rides, today we are going to be looking at the third volume in King's Dark Tower Series, the Wastelands. If i complained last time that the Drawing of the Three didn't really have Roland and ka-tet travelling very far, this volume more than makes up for it. It begins with Roland and Jake chambers fixing the psychic rupture caused by Roland abandoning Jake in the Gunslinger, and then going back to fix it by killing Jake's assassins Jack Mort. It then moves on to the journey to the City of Lud, caught in a Civil War. This is resolved in apocalyptic fashion and the group barely manage to escape the cataclysm on a sentient, suicidal monorail. Heady stuff, and I am honored and privileged as always to have the first lady of Stephen King podcasters, Kim C herself, with me on the quest for the Dark Tower. Kim is a university lecturer in creative writing, who has been educating and entertaining the Stephen King fanbase for a while now with her podcast, The Year of Underrated Stephen King and it's patreon, the Danse Macabre

Albert Einstein, one of the 20th century's most transformative figures, found refuge in the secluded expanse of North Norfolk's coast during a critical juncture in his life. His odyssey to Roughton Heath was fraught with danger, yet it proved to be a defining moment in his evolution as both a scientist and a public intellectual, whose revolutionary ideas had the potential to reshape our understanding of the world. If you're captivated by such narratives, please consider leaving a review, subscribing, and recommending our podcast to others who share your passion for history, folklore, and the macabre in East Anglia. We return from a short break with more tales of the strange and extraordinary from England's East Coast. In this episode, we explore a recent excavation along the River Nene near Peterborough. A farm has been discovered, offering a unique glimpse into the lives, labor, and constructions of Bronze Age inhabitants. We delve into how a fire immortalized Must Farm and discuss the ways in which these ancient people, though from a distant past, share many similarities with us. So many podcasts!I thought I could make one podcast episode where I talked to some folks who podcast about horror, and it would be a one-stop-shop for folks looking for a new favorite commute time killer (hmm. commute-time killer? commute time-killer?)Well, as is often the case, it wasn't until I was in the middle of it that I realized two things:* There are so many podcasts talking about horror books.* Podcasters love to talk - so my 15-20 minute target often ended up going way longer than that.* (I know I said two, but heck this deserves a bullet) There's a ton of podcasts where the only topic is Stephen King and his books.Episode OneClick above to check out the first episode, if you haven't already. We are reaching the end of our strand of the Winter Tales here at Hallowed Histories, but we couldn't resist a couple more stories best enjoyed after dark. For the penultimale episode we are drawing again from the anthology Slow Burn Horror. We supported this project from it's Kickstarter inception all the way through to the beautiful book we now have on the shelf. We kicked off the season with One Candle by Kathryn Leigh, and now we revisit this treasure trove again with Within Walls by Georgina Pearsall. It's a remarkable story, full of squirming eeriness and atmosphere, plus it's set in Norwich. Reading it is the multitalented Emma Zadow. Emma is a playwright, actor, writer and all round artist. I met her at Adam Z Robinson's ghost story writing seminar at the National Centre for Writing. Nowhere on the Suffolk Coast holds as much allure for the lover of the strange than the ruins that were Old Dunwich. Once a thriving seaport, and vital to the nation's wellbeing, it tumbled into the sea through bad weather and bad planning. Rumours sprang up that Dunwich did not lie easily though, and some said the bells of the churches under the water still pealed out. It was until recently that science showed the extent of what remained, and came to a shocking conclusion. Norwich Anglican Cathedral is a fine place to spend some time. It was used as a location in the BBC's adaptation of MR James's The Stalls at Barchester, and boasts one of the largest cloisters in Europe. The Cathedral close is picturesque as one could wish for. However, in a dark corner of the Cathedral is a truly frightening image, with a truly bizarre story that we cover in this episode. Together Julia and I battled technical difficulties (after my interview with Stewart O Nan I think I might be jinxed, or at least have gremlins in the recoding equipment) and we eventually got around to talking about King's cult novella of death, sex and sports, The Long Walk. Julia explained how a book written in the 1960s still reads fresh, and we both marvel at how just darn good that King fellow could write, even as a teenager. Stewart O'Nan's new book, Ocean State, has recently been released in the United States to wide acclaim. However, today we are going to look at one of his earlier books - 2001's The Speed Queen. In a change from our usual format, this isn't a book or an adaptation of a Stephen King text, but instead a novel that uses Stephen King as a character. King is the (unnamed but highly guessable) recipient of the last testament of Marjorie Standiford, mother, daughter, drug addict, sex addict, speed freak and apparent killer. On death row, who else but Stephen King would listen to her side of the love triangle that put her on a collision course with capital punishment? Hi, welcome back to the Constant Reader Podcast, with me your host, Richard Sheppard. Last month's guest, the mighty Paul Tremblay has recently re-released two of his earlier novels, The Little Sleep and No Sleep Til Wonderland through Titan publishing. They're wonderful stuff, very offbeat, and will that great Titan design that I love. The Firestarter film will officially commencing filming in Ontario next month, with Zac Efron in the lead. Stephen King has sent them a message of love, so we'll see how it turns out. There is certainly a great film somewhere in the novel. Other than that, not much news. Later has come out from Hard Case Crime, and we're looking forward to discussing that on the show soon. Lisey's Story is still coming out at the beginning of June on apple TV, and I'm definitely going to be talking about that adaptation of one of my least favourite king novels over the Summer. As you can probably tell from the running time, Andy is passionate, verbose, funny and incisive, so I took the opportunity to speak to him a little longer than usual. This is a real deep dive, so take out hands as we explore the darker side of Derry Maine. A massive thank you to Stephen L Parkes, who was responsible for editing this behemoth. Today's guest, Helena Bacon, is an academic, a teacher and a writer. We discuss Stephen King's 2014 novel Revival, one of (in my opinion) King's most beautifully written stories, with one of the nastiest endings. How does it relate to Arthur Machen, HP Lovecraft and the Old Gods of weird fiction? Find out in this conversation..... Mike Muncer is a guest we have wanted to get on the podcast for a while. His podcast, the long-running The Evolution of Horror, was a major inspiration on The Constant Reader Podcast, and it remains a constant source of erudition and joy to a lot of horror fans. We chose to talk about David Cronenberg's 1983 adaptation of the Dead Zone, dovetailing in with The Evolition of Horror's recent season on Cronenberg's home turf - horrors of the mind and body. We discussed the film, Mike's podcast and plenty more digressions in our deep dive into this chilly masterpiece, and we look forward to welcoming Mike back in the future. Very excited to speak to Peter Laws this month, covering the 1983 novella Cycle of the Werewolf and the 1985 adaptation Silver Bullet. As a Baptist minister, part-time werewolf hunter and full-time horror genre fan, Peter is ideally placed to discuss this genuine oddity in the King canon. We cover Bernie Wrightson's beautiful illustrations, the difficulty of writing a novella in the form of an almanac and the unique interpretation of the werewolf legend by Stephen King. We then move on to Dan Attias's Silver Bullet, and Peter explains why this film holds such a dear place in his heart. Peter Laws is a writer, podcaster, minister, musician and columnist for the Fortean Times. He writes the Matt Hunter series of horror-thrillers and the very engaging non-fiction overview of the appeal of the horror genre, The Frighteners. Host Richard Sheppard and guest Dan Jones look under the hood of Stephen King's 1983 novel, Christine. On the surface a rip-roaring, high-octane story about a killer Plymouth Fury, yet underneath the flashy paint job is a meditation on first love, high school politics, busted family dynamics and friendship. Dan Jones is the author of Man o' War, published by Snowbooks which can be purchased from amazon, forbidden planet.......and he has his own website here.
