Holiday dinners can be minefields. Your pretentious cousin won't stop talking about her year abroad, your mom keeps asking when you plan to have kids, and your drunk uncle just spilled red wine all over the green bean casserole. Sometimes the tricks don't end with Halloween and even the best sweet potato casserole can't make up for the stress of listening to your dad go on yet another political rant. But Constant Readers may rest assured that no matter what horrors may lie under your granny's covered casserole dish, they won't be as bad as the terrible families lurking in King's Dominion. From the Cunninghams to the Hartsfields, the master of horror seems to delight in showing us the dark secrets that lie within every hearth and home. This episode features a sour 16 of sinister clans each duking it out to be named the family you'd least like to visit for the holidays. It's stiff competition, but thankfully your hosts Jenn Adams, Dan Caffrey, Rachel Reeves, and Julia Marchese are on hand to wade through the overturned tables and broken dishes. With a March Madness-style bracket, they'll pit each family against each other till only one remains to claim the title of King's Worst Family. Jace is joined by filmmaker Julia Marchese to chat about her short-film, I Know What You Need. Made through Stephen King's “Dollar Baby” program, the film is styled as a 1970s after school special and uniquely, was actually shot at the University of Maine, in the exact locations mentioned in the story. The film has played in festivals worldwide, earning more than 15 awards to date. “Dollar Baby” was an arrangement in which iconic author Stephen King would grant permission to students and aspiring filmmakers theater producers to adapt one of his short stories for just $1.King retains the rights to his work, but as he began to experience commercial success, he decided to use his platform to help the next generation of creatives. When the program's overseer retired, the program came to an end, making Marchese one of the final recipients of this generosity. Synopsis: It's 1976, and popular college co-ed Elizabeth (Caroline Renee) meets an unusual boy, Edward (William Champion), who knows what she needs. But who is Edward really, and what secrets is he hiding? It's a love story, but a Stephen King love story, so things aren't always what they seem! Elizabeth doesn't know what she wants, but Edward knows what she needs. Check out the trailer HERE “I Know What You Need” will have its Comic-Con debut at their film festival section on Friday, July 26 at 1:45 PM in Grand Ballroom 6 at the San Diego Marriott Marquis. In addition, it will be added to ArrowPlayer, the streaming home to cult cinema, on Friday, July 12. Marchese is additionally the host on three popular podcasts, Horror Movie Survival Guide, JodoWOWsky and The Loser's Club. She also co-hosts Horror X, a video show collaboration between The George A. Romero Foundation and Horror Movie Survival Guide, celebrating women in horror.

Of all the advice Stephen King offers in his memoir On Writing, “write what you know” may be the best. It's certainly advice he follows as his vast catalog is nearly bursting with writer protagonists and the occasional villainous scribe. With King's last literary outing with his own protagonist, Richard Bachman, behind us, we're rounding up all of King's fictional writers to duke it out in a March Madness style tournament until only one remains. Join Jenn Adams as she cues up the arena rock and tips off a series of head-to-head battles in which an expert panel including Michael Roffman, Dan Caffrey, and Julia Marchese slowly narrow down the field to an epic final showdown. Nail-biters and buzzer-beaters abound in our quest to identify King's ultimate writer.Note: This was recorded last month and is being unlocked in lieu of scheduling issues. Much gratitude to Julia Marchese of the Horror Movie Survival Guide and the director and guiding light behind the forthcoming 'Dollar Baby' adaptation of Stephen King's shot story I Know What You Need. Together Julia and I battled technical difficulties (after my interview with Stewart O Nan I think I might be jinxed, or at least have gremlins in the recoding equipment) and we eventually got around to talking about King's cult novella of death, sex and sports, The Long Walk. Julia explained how a book written in the 1960s still reads fresh, and we both marvel at how just darn good that King fellow could write, even as a teenager. Find more about Julia here: - http://www.juliamarchese.com/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/horror-movie-survival-guide/id1260663982 https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/i-know-what-you-need-a-stephen-king-adaptation#/ And a huge thank you to The Long Walk obsessive Pat Coston for his tireless research into the novella, it was invaluable. This episode was hosted by Richard Sheppard, with research and support from Dr Linda Sheppard, and technical and sound production by "The Mad Professor" Stephen L. Parkes. CM and Josh are back with a bonus episode where we talked to actress, writer, filmmaker, and film programmer, Julia Marchese. Julia recently acquired the rights to her very own Dollar Baby, the short story "I Know What You Need", which can be found in Night Shift. Join us as we discuss Julia's unique plan for this film, her love of all things Stephen King, other horror favorites, and her Indiegogo campaign! Julia Marchese is a filmmaker, actor, podcaster, cinephile and film programmer living in Hollywood, California. Her first film was the award winning documentary Out of Print about the importance of revival cinema and 35mm exhibition to culture, and she is currently the co-host of the popular horror podcast Horror Movie Survival Guide. She is currently fundraising for her Dollar Baby short film "I Know What You Need", based on Stephen King's story of the same name from Night Shift. The campaign runs until October 24,2020. You can find her on twitter, facebook and instagram.
Welcome to the Stephen King Podcast - Constant and New Listeners! Join your host - longtime Constant Reader - writer/podcaster - Lou W. Sytsma. Welcome to Episode 110 of The Stephen King Podcast! Filmmaker Julia Marchese has just announced her new project and comes on the podcast to talk about it. Marchese will next be adapting Stephen King's short story I Know What You Need into a short film which she will also direct. The Indiegogo campaign to fund the film launches Monday, October 5th and runs until Saturday, October 24. Marchese's first film was the 2016 documentary Out of Print about the importance of revival cinema and 35mm film exhibition to culture & featured interviews with Rian Johnson, Edgar Wright, Kevin Smith, Joe Dante, Patton Oswalt, Seth Green and many more. The film played around the world, is now streaming online and the 35mm print of the film is now a part of The Academy Film Archive. Marchese acquired the film rights to the story as part of Stephen King's Dollar Baby Program, which allows the rights to certain short stories of his to be bought for one dollar (and you really do send Stephen King a dollar bill in the mail). The contract states that the rights are good for one year, and the resulting film must be 45 minutes or under, plus the film must be non-profit, non-broadcast. Another requirement of Dollar Baby contract is that all of the finished short films must be sent to him to view. That means you can be part of a project that Stephen King himself will watch. I Know What You Need is a short story that was first featured in the September 1976 issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine, and then compiled into the short story collection Night Shift in 1978. The story centers on Elizabeth, a popular college junior who is approached one night by Edward, an unkempt outcast whose first words to her are "I Know What You Need" - and she is shocked to discover that he does. The film will be set in the year the story was first published - 1976. The film will be shot on the gorgeous campus of the University of Maine, where Stephen King attended and where the story is set. That means this film will be shot in the exact same locations that Stephen King wrote about in the story. Marchese is an avid Stephen King fan and has been a loyal Constant Reader since she was a child. In addition to reading his works growing up, she has also spent the last two and a half years reading over 40 of Stephen King's books that are a part of his vast multiverse connected to The Dark Tower series. She is also a film programmer, actor and the co-host of the popular horror podcast Horror Movie Survival Guide. She is beyond thrilled at this opportunity to adapt her favorite short story by her favorite author for the screen. Her Indiegogo campaign runs from October 5 -24, and she appreciates shares just as much as donations! Julia Marchese in front of Stephen King's house in Bangor, Maine. Hope you enjoy this episode! Tyler and David are joined by Julia Marchese to discuss her film Out of Print and the importance of rep cinema and 35MM film.
On this episode we travel back in time slightly by catching up with a recent release that just hit DVD and Blu-Ray since the recording in PREDESTINATION, which inspires a look back at two older films about time travel with THE TERMINATOR vs. MINORITY REPORT. We also catch up with a former guest and director of OUT OF PRINT, Julia Marchese, and jump ahead in time to her future plans.
On this episode we predict The Future of Film. To do this, we look back at the 1982 film ROOM 666, and scoff at the failed predictions made by industry titans such as Steven Spielberg. Then we see if Keanu Reeves is the one, with his dangerous investigative journalism in 2012's SIDE BY SIDE where he attempts to find out... just how much of a pompous asshole is Christopher Nolan? But first, Julia Marchese joins us to talk about her new documentary OUT OF PRINT. GUEST: Julia Marchese also talks time travel with us, and allows the podcast version of that by correcting our pronunciation mistakes.
In our latest episode, we discuss Christopher Nolan's latest film INTERSTELLAR. We also talk about Julia Marchese's documentary OUT OF PRINT, TWIN PEAKS, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME, and not even Kim Kardashian can escape us this time.
This week, Julia Marchese joins Jen to discuss revival cinema, the type of movie theater that has classic and special programming rather than first run films. Working at and loving the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles, Julia is a veritable expert on revival cinema and has also been inspired to fight back against studios phasing out 35mm film prints by making her upcoming documentary, Out of Print. Julia shares thoughts on the importance of revival cinema to movies as a whole, what makes the New Beverly so special, plus cool tidbits about Out of Print. She also reveals what it's like to have Quentin Tarantino as your landlord. If you're enjoying PrePopCulture, please rate/review it on iTunes, and like it on Facebook!
