At the young age of 22, he started his own film production company and before long he was working around the world for TV networks and Fortune 500 clients, making the kind of films and TV shows that inspired him and his audience. Rob was living his passion and purpose and getting well paid to go sailing in Tahiti, film colorful religious festivals in Thailand or go helicopter skiing with camera in hand. It was a dream career come true. Then there was a turning point in Rob's life, and this shifted the landscape of his world.  Rob and his wife Dee were lost in a winter blizzard for 5 days and given up for dead.   After this near-death survival experience that was national news and resulted in a call from the President of the United States, they started asking questions about what really their purpose in life was ~ like what many people are asking now in the pandemic. As a result of overcoming this adversity – Rob began his search for the source of human happiness. They decided to sell their home and buy a sailboat, which morphed into the adventure of spending the next 17 years sailing around the world studying human happiness. Rob has shared his life with both billionaires and barefoot villagers in 100 countries. David used to give out rubber bracelets, one of which I still wear, that say “Happiness Warrior.”  This episode's guest, Rob Dubin, should probably also be called a happiness warrior. Rob had already chosen a career that made him happy making outdoors-themed films, getting to kayak, heli-ski, and climb mountains for work. Long before he started a business teaching people how to be happy, Rob, his wife, and a party of skiers became lost in the Colorado backcountry during one of the worst blizzards in the state's history. That led to a massive search that made international headlines and a pronouncement from the local sheriff that they had only a 10% chance for survival. To Rob and his wife, they had a 90% chance, and that sense of optimism was instrumental in their return to civilization, where they were greeted by a phone call from President Bill Clinton. It also re-framed their outlook on life, which then included spending 17 years sailing around the world learning about other cultures and studying human happiness and fulfillment while visiting 100 countries. Following retirement and seeing the effects of the pandemic, Rob decided to start his company to train others to achieve the kind of happiness he and his wife have experienced. He works with many companies that are battling employee retention in this post-pandemic world in which workers are seeking more fulfillment in their jobs and thinking less about longevity. During a conversation he had many years ago with motivational superstar Tony Robbins, Robbins expressed to Rob that we can all be the stone that hits the water and creates outward ripples that influence others, a concept that resonates strongly to me. That sparked Rob to now do public speaking and he recently completed a TED talk. Rob shares on this episode a lot of terrific actionable advice to help you be happier, be present, and live with gratitude. He also shares with WASP listeners his first lesson that you can receive by simply texting “Happier” to 33777 on your phone. He sailed the world for 17 years studying happiness. Before that, though, he had to deal with a prognosis for his wife that said she'd lose both feet to frostbite. And before that, he and his wife were lost for days in a Colorado blizzard that had rescuers giving them up for dead. Rob Dubin learned a lot from all of that, and talks  about what it takes to achieve happiness. Rob Dubin, on Keep it Juicy!

I interviewed Rob Dubin. Rob is a keynote speaker, and trainer on employee happiness, employee wellness, engagement, and fulfillment of strategies to combat the Great Resignation. He and his wife spent 17 years living on a sailboat and sailing around the world. Along the way, they shared their lives with and learned from people of diverse cultures in over 100 countries. He's lived an extraordinary life and the insights on human fulfillment he gained along the way provide both inspiration and a map for his audience to navigate transformation in their own lives. Rob's entire life has been about following his passions. At age 22 he started his own film production company. Before long he was working all over the world for TV networks and Fortune 500 clients making the kinds of films and TV shows that inspired him and his audience. Rob was living his passion and purpose and getting well paid to go sailing in Tahiti, film colorful religious festivals in Thailand, or go helicopter skiing with a camera in hand. It was a dream career come true, yet after a near-death experience that would have sidelined most people, Rob sailed away seeking even greater fulfillment. At age 42 he and his wife sold their home bought a sailboat and spent the next 17 years exploring the world. Rob is an entrepreneur with his last company reaching a million dollars in sales 5 months after startup. His own businesses and film work with Fortune 500 clients across dozens of industries complement his life lessons learned from sharing meals with both billionaires and barefoot villagers on 6 continents. He has been married to Dee, his film producer, and life partner for 39 years. Rob Dubin has studied and mastered the art of human happiness. I encourage every listener to follow him, gain insights from his teachings, and grow. Everyone has a story, and this is his story. Pre-pandemic in the US there was a notion that if you did all the right things, happiness would just happen to you. That's not actually the way happiness works. In the pandemic there was a paradigm shift where millions of people started asking themselves were they happy in their life or was their life ending up how they imagined it. Lots of people said no its not and resigned in mass numbers. A second paradigm shift happened when people asked themselves questions about their dissatisfaction at work. The HR department had always known the answer was more money and better benefits but now that people were asking if they were happy in life, the HR departments were at a loss. In the old world we knew that more money would make us happy. In the new world no one knows the answer because few people know how to make themselves happy.

The Great Resignation is challenging HR departments and affecting bottom lines. Yet even the most forward-thinking companies cannot solve the problem of employee happiness on their own. The real solution is teaching employees the actual recipe for happiness - yes there is a recipe for happiness and when your staff learns it they will be far more engaged at work and more fulfilled at home....and they will stay on the job. https://selfdiscoverymedia.com/?p=100087
