There's much more to the fiercely intelligent, multitalented singer-songwriter-keyboardist Patrice Rushen than “Forget Me Nots,” though that song, with its get-up-and-dance groove and Rushen's sweet vocals, is undeniable. Not only was it a Grammy-nominated hit in 1982, but it served as the basis for Will Smith's “Men in Black” (amid a tense negotiation) and in 2021 became a viral TikTok dance sensation. Just what you'd expect from a formally trained jazz pianist who began studying music at age 3, was signed to the jazz label Prestige at age 17 and moved on to record funky, genre-defying music for Elektra. She also has scored films such as Hollywood Shuffle, served as music director for the Grammy and Emmy Awards, and chairs the University of Southern California's Popular Music Program. It's all of a piece, she explains, and straight from the heart.

Contents: 01:00 - As an engineer what's the most interesting problem you've ever worked on? 02:46 - What interested you about physics and engineering to begin with when you were young and what motivated you to then go and study it at Cambridge? 04:20 - What do you think the greatest thing you learned was whilst you were at Cambridge? 06:42 - So what was the transition like going from academic study and research into industry? What did you have to learn for that? 08:33 - Was it quite difficult to learn to explain some obviously quite high level concepts to people from a non-technical background? 10:21 - How do you go about solving problems in industry? Do you approach problems in a certain way? 14:50 - Could you explain what reinforcement learning is, how it works and how you applied it to this project (traffic flow)? 21:50 - Can you explain how these sorts of models work (model predictive control framework to guide policy decisions on social distancing) and how beneficial it would be to use systems like this to guide decision making? 26:20 - So what's been your favourite startup to work on and why? 29:12 - So if you could choose to work on anything else in the future what would it be? 32:05 - Which idea, in the history of science, do you believe, was the most revolutionary? 34:10 - Do you think that (quantum computing) could have a really significant impact on AI and machine learning? 36:40 - If you could give one piece of advice to someone around my age, 17, 18, looking to go into physics or engineering what would it be? Karl Rushen is an adventurer and endurance athlete, in 2011 his Brother was tragically killed in action as a Member of the SAS. Karl has created an amazing legacy for his brother and has not only challenged himself, but so many others to "Be a better Version of Themselves" Karl created The 100 Peaks Challenge, a tribute to his brother The team began the Challenge on 23rd May 2017 finishing on the summit of Pen Y Fan on the anniversary of his death. The 25 Day duration was the length of his brothers' last tour of duty. Karl say the thing he's most proud of as a Champion is the amount of people that decided to make a change in themselves as a result of what they were aiming to achieve with the Challenge. So many people began their own personal journeys, using The 100 Peaks as a catalyst, something he's keen to grow as a legacy of the Challenge Where you can find more info about Karl www.the100peaks.com www.beablacksheep.co.uk https://getoutside.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/filter/?ambassadors=karl-rushen · https://www.facebook.com/blacksheepmarathons/ · https://www.beablacksheep.co.uk/blacksheep-events · Instagram – mr100peaks/_100blacksheep/the100peaks · Twitter – Mr100Peaks · Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/100BlackSheep/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY7Z8CCFBvXEJPtAcGvZ1Vw/featured?view_as=subscriber

These records were dusty and hard to mix (pre-drum machine) so please forgive some of the transitions! Back to the old school and done the old school way (All vinyl, two turntables and a mixer). This mix showcases a different aspect of the sounds I like - soul and a bit of disco funk. It's more about the journey and selection here; not claiming to break the ultra rare and elusive, although you certainly won't find a couple of these easily and/or without paying good money for it. :) The mix is roughly the set I played for the Beat Swap Meet in Los Angeles on September 15, 2013; roughly because I recorded this after and not when I played and because I can't be certain that the tracks in this particular set are identical to the Beat Swap Meet set. The track listing is as follows: 1. Atmosfear "Xtra Special" (Dry mix) [Elite Records Ltd., 1982] 2. The Cool Notes "Spend the Night" [Abstract Records, 1985] 3. Patrice Rushen "Feels So Real (Won't Let Go)" [Elektra, 1984] 4. Gladys Knight & the Pips "Save the Overtime (For Me)" [Columbia, 1983] 5. Whodini "Five Minutes of Funk" [Jive, 1984] 6. I Level "Give Me" [Epic/Virgin, 1982] 7. Gwen Guthrie "Should've Been You" [Island Records, 1982] 8. Project Future "Ray-Gun-Omics" [Capitol Records, 1983] 9. Love Unlimited Orchestra (presents Charles Webster) "Welcome Aboard" [Unlimited Gold Records, 1981] 10. Charles Earland "Intergalactic Love Song" [Mercury, 1976] 11. Bloodfire VIII "Bloodfire vs. Creative Source" [Bloodfire, 2011] 12. GQ "Someday" [Arista, 1980] Enjoy!
Pianist, songwriter, musical director and vocalist Patrice Rushen sits down with Sodajerker to chat about the writing of songs like 'Hang it Up', 'Haven't You Heard', 'The Funk Won't Let You Down', 'This is All I Really Know', 'Remind Me' and her seminal dance floor hit 'Forget Me Nots'. Patrice talks about her early jazz-fusion work, the Elektra albums and her eclectic approach to sustaining a career in music.
