It's an election year, so the politicians are treating Detroit like a game show set. The Secret Service has lockdowned Michigan Avenue for a week. 3 days of Kamala, then maybe Joe, then comes the Donald, and then Kamala returns. Small businesses suffer, but they don't care- they're small. In parachutes the media. “How are the auto workers going to vote?” they ask me without asking the auto workers. “How is Dearborn going to vote?” they ask me without asking the little people of Dearborn. “How would I know?” I tell them. I didn't ask them how they would vote. I asked them instead, how they're going to feed their children now that they got laid off. Geraldo said Black men don't want hard jobs. How would he know? He never asked them. Watch our joint report with NewsNation. Plus an update on the latest Trump hoax. And fact checking the most recent Samantha Woll murder report. Co-hosts Adolph Mongo, Vanessa Moss, Allan Lengel and Jim Nardone talk with Brian Brown, the defense attorney for Michael Jackson-Bolanos, who was charged in the murder last year of downtown Detroit synagogue President Samantha Woll.He talks about the trial, the judge, the sentence, the confession by the ex-boyfriend and what he saw as the shortcomings of the police investigation. He also talks about the impact the case has had on his practice. Jackson-Bolanos, 29, was acquitted by the Wayne County Circuit Court jury on charges of first-degree premeditated murder or second-degree murder. The jury deadlocked on the charges of felony murder and first-degree home invasion, and the judge subsequently dropped those charges, saying the factual allegations were similar to the counts Jackson-Balanos was acquitted of. Jackson-Bolanos was convicted of lying to investigators and was sentenced to 18 months to 15 years. He was given credit for 243 days served and is likely to be released by early next year.

Paris Olympics are done, Denard Robinson's cop cam, Justin Bieber heckled, Eli Zaret stops in, Corey Feldman visits a medium, Drew Crime, bands with no original members, and Frankie Valli is morphing into an animatronic puppet. Paris 2024: Breakdancing captivated the Olympics for its pure stupidity. The butts were on full display in the Artistic Swimming event. Olympics are done… back to twerking on OnlyFans. Johnny Weir looked perfectly ridiculous. Tom Cruise made the closing ceremonies all about him. The USA dominates Basketball. Eli Zaret drops by to praise LeBron James, name-drop Mike Tirico, the NBA's massive new sports streaming deal, comment on Donald Trump's crowd obsession, cover the latest Jim Harbaugh nonsense, Michigan's middle finger back to the NCAA, the Wolverines low standing in the first AP college football rankings, MSU's rough schedule, boring Detroit Lions preseason games, quarterback contracts to come, the terrible Detroit Tigers and more. We watch the cop cam footage of former University of Michigan QB Denard Robinson's OWI. Jake Paul looks like he's on steroids. A new movie about Saturday Night Live is on the way and will be released October 11th. Nelly is 50 years old and still taking ecstasy. We only know this because he hit a slot machine jackpot. Frankie Valli is 90 and still singing… depending on how you define singing. There are many bands performing today with no original members. Molly Hatchet sucks live. Iron Butterfly is not much better. Kevin Bacon really wants you to look at his hair. Is Kevin Bacon hot? He certainly thinks he's a smoke show. Corey Feldman saw medium Tyler Henry and his mind was blown. Fred Durst confirmed the Corey solos are legit, but they are still atrocious. Amanda Bynes looks terrible these days. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are making a movie about Hulk Hogan suing Gawker. Murderer Gypsy Rose Blanchard is going to have a baby and it's a girl! Justin Bieber is an old man being heckled by kids now. Britney Spears played with 1/3 of Paul Soliz's children. She's currently beefing with Blake Lively. Elijah Wood was in town and probably thinks he's hot too. Drew Crime: The crimes of Linda Cooney. The Samantha Woll alleged murderer will not be tried again. Murder charges were finally filed against a man that had a relationship with a Detroit neurosurgeon that was found dead in his house rolled up in a carpet. David Copperfield sued for trashing penthouse. There a few things funnier that a leaky pool in a city high-rise. Politics: Kamala Harris is on the rise! Joe Biden did an interview and nobody noticed. First up, Dov Waxman, director of UCLA's Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies and the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation Chair in Israel Studies, joins the show to discuss the American Jewish community's response to 9/11, defining antisemitism (and why he argues that anti-Zionism is not antisemitism; Waxman was part of the Nexus Task Force that sought to combat antisemitism while arguably having a less broad and potentially politicized definition of antisemitism than the IHRA), his book Trouble in the Tribe: The American Jewish Conflict Over Israel, the idea of exiling anti-Zionist Jewish groups like Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow and why disagrees with it, the debate over the value of the settler-colonial discourse, the different types of Zionism, his feelings on Palestinian anti-Zionist attitudes, and much, much more! In the second segment of the show Ron Kampeas, longtime reporter of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, discuss a number of the topics discussed with Prof. Waxman, but also the March for Israel rally, right-wing antisemitism and criticism of John Hagee's participation in the rally, the involvement of a "peace bloc" at the rally, the Jonathan Pollard spy case, Ron's reporting on the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting, remaining objective in reporting on news that oftn hits close to home emotionally, Rashida Tlaib's use of the pro-Palestinian "from the rive to the sea", the murder of Chicago-based Jewish-American community leader Samantha Woll and the rush to assume it was a hate crime (since ruled out by police), differences between Jewish media outlets in both America and Israel, sentiments against Benjamin Netanyahu in the U.S. and Israel, and much, much, more!

Hello! This week, New York Times Magazine contributing writer and repeat guest Rozina Ali talks with us about media coverage of the war in Israel and Gaza as well as the challenges faced by journalists, more than twenty of whom have been killed in the region over the past two weeks. We also discuss whether there has been a chilling of speech in the West, the history of suppressed expression when it comes to Israel and Palestine, and how all this may shake out in politics and public sentiment. In this episode, we ask: How accurate are the comparisons of this moment to 9/11, in terms of media suppression, Islamophobia, and our ability to parse complicated political issues? Does social media incentivize checking certain boxes around Israel-Palestine over moving dialogue forward? Why are U.S. elected officials so out of touch with public opinion? For more, see: * Retaliation within Israel (Crackdown on Freedom of Speech of Palestinian Citizens of Israel), on U.S. college campuses (A “McCarthyite Backlash” Against Pro-Palestine Speech), at the 92Y (92NY Pulls Event With Viet Thanh Nguyen Over Criticism of Israel), and more (A Surge in Suppression)* A growing list of journalist casualties since October 7, from the Committee to Protect Journalists * Mona Chalabi's visualization of deaths in the war versus New York Times coverage of those deaths* Articles on the killings of synagogue president Samantha Woll in Detroit and of Muslim six-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume in Chicago * Egyptian comedian Bassem Youssef, interviewed by Piers Morgan* Rozi's Times Magazine profile of Rashida Tlaib, from March 2022 * Our first episode with Rozina, from March 2021: Kimchi nationalism, Biden on immigration and foreign policy, and Desi identities * Plus, our episode with Viet Thanh Nguyen, from August 2020: Ethnic Studies, Revolutionary Politics, and the Third World Liberation Front* A recent U.S. opinion poll on the war, from CBS News/YouGov (compared with lackluster support for a ceasefire in Congress)* Last week's episode with Amjad Iraqi, a policy analyst and Palestinian citizen of Israel: The siege in Gaza and Israel's end gameIf you're a writer, journalist, or media worker who has faced retaliation for expressing your views on the war in Gaza, you can reach out to the National Writers Union for support by filling out this survey. Subscribe on Patreon or Substack to keep us going and join our Discord community. Today, we are discussing the current situation in Gaza and related topics. Script: Hello everyone, I'm Claire Mattes, and you're listening to Seeking Refuge News, a podcast sharing stories of refugees and the world events that affect them. Today, we are going to give an update on the situation between Gaza and Israel. According to the Gaza Health Ministry - since the attack on Israel by Hamas, an Islamic Jihad group originating out of Palestine, on October 7th - 5,791 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed. Gaza is an area where almost half of the population are children. Thus, as a result of the deadly airstrikes, the Israeli government has murdered 2,360 children so far. As reported by Reuters, in one day, on October 23rd, Israel launched over 400 airstrikes, killing more than 700 Palestinians, the highest death toll in a day so far. Israel says that this airstrike killed Hamas commanders, hitting militants as they were preparing to launch rockets toward Israel and striking command centers and a Hamas tunnel shaft. Ammar al-Butta, a survivor of an airstrike, says that there were about 100 people in his area, including many who had come from Gaza City, which Israel has ordered civilians to evacuate. Ammar further notes, “They were sheltering at our home because we thought that our area would be safe. But apparently, there is no safe place in Gaza.” 13 people from his family have died due to the aforementioned airstrike. On October 18th, there was a deadly airstrike on the al-Ahli hospital that killed nearly 500 people, as noted by Aljazeera. The Health Ministry in Gaza says it was Israel, and Israel says it was by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad who misfired a rocket. There have been multiple conflicting reports on who is to blame. The United Nations is now urging Israel to allow more aid to reach Gaza. Currently, the Israel blockade of food, travel route, supplies, etc. is worsening the already critical condition of the area. Dr. Rick Brennan, WHO Regional Emergencies Director, stated, “We are on our knees asking for that sustained, scaled up, protected humanitarian operation.” A Gaza Health Ministry spokesperson has said that all hospitals in Gaza are now running out of fuel to power their electricity generators, leaving them unable to treat severely injured patients. More than 40 medical centers in the area have ceased operations. Without an end to the deadly blockade, thousands more Gaza residents will die as a result of the continued airstrikes. On October 23rd, two Israelis kidnapped by Hamas were freed. According to AP News, one of the captives noted that on the way to her prison, she was beaten with sticks, bruising her ribs and making it difficult for her to breathe. In the prison, she notes that her treatment and conditions were clean and she had access to medical care and food. Currently, the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK support Israel and its right to defend itself. During the Cairo Peace Summit, many Arab countries expressed anger toward Israel, including countries who were once close allies to Israel such as Egypt. Many Arab countries demonstrate hesitancy to accept Palestinian refugees. They fear that if Palestinians leave, they will never be allowed to return - an event that occurred in the 1948 war when Palestinians fled as Israel colonized the area. Protests have erupted in all corners of the world in support of Palestine alongside protests in support of the Israeli state. Such protests have resulted in violence across oceans. On October 16th, 2023, PBS reports on the story of a six-year-old boy, Wadea Al-Fayoume, a Palestinian American 6-year-old boy in Illinois, was stabbed 26 times by his family's landlord in a hate crime relating to the current Israel-Palestine development. Samantha Woll, a Jewish leader dedicated to building ties between young Muslims and Jews, was murdered outside of her home in Detroit on October 21st, according to NDTV. A suspect has not been named yet. Liked this episode? Let us know! Subscribe and leave us a review below! Live from STUDIO G- in the heart of America- I'm STEVE GRUBER- saying the things you wish you could in polite company- fighting for you from the Foxhole of Freedom and defending this great nation every single day-- this is THE STEVE GRUBER SHOW!   Here are 3 big things you need to know right now—   Number One— Lawmakers in Washington are being warned to not travel alone—with crime skyrocketing and violent car jackings going through the roof—nobody is safe apparently—   Number Two— Joe Biden says he has never known about or been involved with the business dealings of his son or his brother—well if that's true—he has some explaining to do about a newly revealed $200,000 directly deposited to his account—   Number Three— What a mess—an absolute mess that is becoming more dangerous by the minute—and I mean dangerous to all of us—   The question you're asking however is which one Steve?   And I completely understand how its not clear anymore—it seems to me that every since the pandemic and the fear mongering was foisted upon us by governments all over the world—and amplified by the compliant media worldwide—it has become a life of one crisis after another—and I'm not even talking about the ones they make up along the way like global warming and man made climate change—   I am only talking about the ones they created either intentionally or by way of near total incompetence—but it doesn't really matter how we got here—we are here and it is an absolute mess—   So, let's go down the list that affects you and me the most—the economy is a mess, with interest rates killing peoples dreams of buying a home, a used car or even go on a quick, vacation—those things are simply out of reach for millions of us—and it wasn't that way before Joe Biden came into the White House— I mean the price of everything is going through the roof—and this is why a little bit of math matters—according to NBC News—the buying power of your dollars—the ones you are saving for a rainy day—well that buying power has been cut in half since the end of 2020—that's right the printing of billions of dollars by an out of control administration has stripped people of the ability to afford a whole host of things—so as prices soar right along side interest rates—it is leaving millions on the sidelines—   Next on the list is the wide-open southern border—I mean the feckless weasels in Washington keep telling us its secure—BUT of course its not—in fact Joe Biden is asking for $14 Billion dollars to disperse millions of illegal aliens all over the country—yep, he wants to send you the bill to destroy the meaning of American citizenship—how glorious is that? I don't remember learning about that in Government class do you?   We also have the ongoing paralyzed mess that is the Republican Party—after a few rebels joined with 210 Democrats to toss out Kevin McCarthy as Speaker—then it was on to Jim Jordan and that failed—and today there are 9 new candidates—Yep, it's a mess!   Then of course, there is the huge mess in Ukraine—that we are funding to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars—BUT the biggest mess of all is the ongoing war now in the Middle East—and the mess that has settled into Western nations—where tens of thousands of people are turning out in support of the butchers of Hamas—and its not just happening in other countries its happening right here too—   Over the weekend the leader of the Jewish community in Detroit a 40 year old, well connected Democrat was stabbed to death in front of her home—Samantha Woll was praised by her close friends like Michigan AG Dana Nessel—and even though its an ongoing investigation and no suspects have been identified yet—I know whas I thought when I first heard the news—and you probably thought the same thing—that it was some kind of revenge killing—   Now I will wait for the facts to come out before I make any final determinations—BUT that is where my mind went first—   And what about those ripping America for supporting Israel's right to defend itself? But Israel bombing Gaza relentlessly could be just an early part of what could become a global war—that's right, we are staring at the distinct possibility of a much larger war—   Iran could be the pin in the grenade—Iran has been threatening Israel that if they go into Gaza with ground troops it will open the gates of Hell—and Israel says if Hezbollah or any other Iranian linked military attack comes its way—that Tehran and the mullahs will get the same treatment Gaza has already received—that of course could bring retaliation from several Arab countries that would not be able to sit on the sidelines—even though most despise Iran and Hamas and Hezbollah—   Yeah, what a mess—   So, you have to wonder, do we actually have a gameplan when it comes to the war in the Middle East?   Right now I am not seeing anything that gives me confidence that this administration can handle any of these problems right now—   And I am not enamored with the Republicans in large part either—I mean all the usual war mongers are out in force—and they seem quite comfortable sending the American military back onto the battlefield—   Which brings me to the question of why Democrats and Republicans want to tie three of these big problems together and stick you and me with yet another massive bill—   It makes zero sense to tie Ukraine, Israel and the border all together in one spending bill—BUT that is what both sides are pushing right now—   Yeah, and this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg—because the messes we are faced with are monumental—and maybe that is all part of the master plan—keep us all off balance—so when they come down with some ridiculous demands—like hide in your house and don't come out until we tell you its safe—that people will comply like they did beginning in March of 2020—   I think we are at a different point in history right now—and I don't think the world seems very compliant—and sadly I think we will soon find out—and this whole mess—is going to get a whole hell of a lot bigger!

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 24 at 7 a.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz, one of two Israelis freed by Hamas on Monday, spoke of her captivity. Appearing weak in a wheelchair and speaking softly, Lifshitz told reporters Tuesday that the militants beat her with sticks, bruising her ribs and making it hard to breathe as they kidnapped her. Lifshitz, whose husband remains a hostage, said conditions were kept clean and she received medical care, including medication. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An off-duty pilot riding in the cockpit of a Horizon Air passenger jet tried to shut down the engines in midflight. It happened Sunday on a flight from Everett, Washington, to San Francisco. The plane diverted to Portland, Oregon, where it was met by law enforcement officers. Alaska Airlines, which owns Horizon, said Monday that the crew reported “a credible security threat related to an authorized occupant in the flight deck jump seat" — one of its pilots, who was off duty. Authorities in Oregon identified the man as Joseph David Emerson. The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says he is being held on 83 counts each of attempted murder and reckless endangerment and one count of endangering an aircraft. BERLIN (AP) — German authorities say two cargo ships have collided in the North Sea off the German coast and one vessel apparently sank. One sailor died and four are missing. Germany's Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said the ships, Polesie and Verity, collided early on Tuesday morning about 22 kilometers, about 14 miles, southwest of the island of Helgoland. One of the ships, the British-flagged Verity, is believed to have sunk. Two sailors were rescued. Vessels supporting the rescue effort included a cruise ship that has doctors on board and could treat people if needed. DENVER (AP) — A former National Security Agency employee from Colorado has pleaded guilty to trying to sell classified information to Russia. Under a plea agreement approved by a federal judge on Monday, prosecutors agreed to not ask for more than about 22 years in prison for 31-year-old Jareh Sebastian Dalke if he follows the terms of the deal. He will be sentenced in April, but the judge will ultimately decide the sentence. The Army veteran faces up to a possible life sentence for allegedly giving the information to an undercover FBI agent who prosecutors say Dalke believed was a Russian agent. The Rangers are going to the World Series, the Diamondbacks and Phillies are going to a game 7 in the NLCS, Kirk Cousins leads the Vikings to a win, and Giannis Antetokounmpo agrees to an extension with the Bucks. Correspondent Chuck Freimund reports. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. CT: RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The International Committee of the Red Cross says Hamas militants have released two hostages it had been holding captive in the Gaza Strip. It was the second time the group has freed hostages seized in its bloody Oct. 7 cross-border incursion into Israel. The hostages were identified by Israeli media as Yocheved Lifshitz and Nurit Cooper of the Israeli kibbutz of Nir Oz. A U.S. official said Monday that Washington has advised Israel to delay a possible ground invasion to allow more time to try and secure the release of more hostages. Palestinian officials and witnesses say heavy airstrikes across Gaza demolished buildings, killing hundreds of people. DETROIT (AP) — Investigators say they have identified several people of interest in the fatal stabbing of a Detroit synagogue president. Authorities found 40-year-old Samantha Woll's body outside her home early Saturday. Detroit Police Chief James E. White said during a news conference Monday that Woll attended a wedding Friday night and left the celebration around 12:30 a.m. He says there was no sign that anyone forced their way into her home. He says investigators have identified a number of people of interest, but that they believe a suspect acted alone. Woll led the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue. Police have repeatedly said they found no evidence that her killing was motivated by antisemitism. WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says the dozens of U.S. technology hubs President Joe Biden is announcing will help communities across the country become centers of innovation critical to its competitiveness. Biden is designating 31 technology hubs that reach 32 states and Puerto Rico. The tech hubs are designed to help spur innovation in industries concentrated in these areas and to create jobs. The Democratic president announced the tech hubs Monday. The tech hubs are the result of a process the Commerce Department launched in May for cities to share $500 million in grants. The hubs tie into Biden's economic message that people should able to find good jobs wherever they live. CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A man who was living in a tent in the woods has been convicted of murder in the fatal shooting of a retired New Hampshire couple who were out for a walk. After deliberating for a day and a half, the jury on Monday found 27-year-old Logan Clegg guilty of second-degree murder in the April 2022 killings of Stephen and Djeswende Reid. They were killed while walking on a trail near their apartment in Concord. Clegg lived near the trail. He was arrested in Vermont in October 2022. His lawyers said he left the state because he was hiding from police due to a probation violation, not because of the Reids' deaths. Clegg faces up to life in prison. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey has returned to a New York City federal court and entered a not guilty plea to a charge alleging he conspired to act as an agent of the Egyptian government. The Democratic former chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee entered the plea on Monday. Menendez stepped down from his powerful post on the Senate committee after he was criminally charged last month with other conspiracy counts. Those charges allege Menendez and his wife accepted bribes from three New Jersey businessmen in exchange for his assistance. Menendez has vowed to prove his innocence. MILLEN, Ga. (AP) — A body found wrapped in plastic inside a Georgia dumpster 35 years ago has been identified as that of a South Korean woman. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Monday that they used DNA analysis to determine that 26-year-old Chong Un Kim was the person whose body was discovered in rural Millen in February 1988. Kim died from asphyxiation, but it's unclear whether someone killed her or who dumped her body. Investigators say Kim lived for several years in Hinesville, 70 miles south of Millen. Her body was found wrapped with plastic inside a suitcase. Investigators say Kim had been dead four to seven days when her body was found. KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A decade after swimming nonstop for more than two straight days from Cuba to Florida, Diana Nyad has returned to the Key West beach where she completed her epic journey. Nyad and her former support team helped mark the swim's 10th anniversary Sunday by helping return a rehabilitated sea turtle to the Atlantic. Nearly 2,000 people had lined the beach on Labor Day 2013 to welcome Nyad as she came ashore after swimming for 52 hours and 54 minutes across the Florida Straits from Havana — a distance of 111 miles. She succeeded on her fifth attempt at the age of 64. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Federal authorities have unsealed charges against four men in the theft earlier this year of more than 2 million dimes from a tractor-trailer that had picked up the coins from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Authorities have said the driver was bound for Miami on April 13 when he pulled into a parking lot to sleep. They say thieves raided the truck overnight, stealing a portion of the $750,000 in dimes — a shipment weighing six tons. The heist left thousands of coins scattered over the lot. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports four defendants face conspiracy, robbery, theft of government money and other charges that were unsealed Monday. The United Auto Workers union has once again escalated its strikes against Detroit Three automakers, this time adding a factory that makes Ram pickup trucks for Stellantis. The union says in a statement that 6,800 members walked out Monday morning at the Sterling Heights, Michigan, Assembly Plant, a huge profit center for the company. The move came just three days after union President Shawn Fain reported progress in talks with General Motors and Stellantis but said the companies will have to make better offers. No progress was reported with Ford. The union went on strike Sept. 15 at one assembly plant from each company. About 40,800 workers are now on strike against all three automakers. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The United States has renewed a warning that it would defend the Philippines in case of an armed attack after Chinese ships blocked and collided with two Filipino vessels in the South China Sea. Philippine diplomats summoned a Chinese Embassy official in Manila on Monday for a strongly worded protest following Sunday's collisions off Second Thomas Shoal, which is also claimed by China. No injuries were reported but the Philippine ships reported damage. China has blamed the Philippines for the collisions saying the vessels were carrying construction materials to strengthen the Philippine outpost at the shoal. The Philippines and other neighbors of China have resisted Beijing's sweeping territorial claims over virtually the entire South China Sea. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Anti-abortion groups seeking to build opposition to a reproductive rights measure in Ohio are messaging heavily around a term for an abortion procedure that hasn't been legal in the U.S. for over 15 years. The opposition campaign and top Republicans increasingly reference partial-birth abortions in ads, debates and public statements. The abortion opponents say partial-birth abortions are an imminent threat if voters approve the constitutional amendment Nov. 7. Partial-birth abortion is a non-medical term for a federally prohibited procedure known as dilation and extraction. Abortion rights group Pro-Choice Ohio says talk of partial-birth abortions is a scare tactic. Constitutional scholars say the amendment would not override the existing federal ban if Ohio voters approve it.
