The film has received countless accolades and is nominated for 13 Oscars. We spoke to film thinkers in Mexico and the U.S. about what went wrong, what went right, and how critics and fans are responding. In 1960, Lady Bird Lake was built by the city of Austin. The river-like reservoir was created as a cooling pond for Austin's then-new city power plant. The 416-acre lake is now primarily used for recreation, but many in the area are now concerned is it the hunting ground for a killer. There have been  multiple deaths reported since 2022. Two more reported in past days.  Even though police have given no indication there are signs of foul play, social media has lit up with speculation. According to the San Antonio Current, rumors of a serial killer hunting young men and dumping their bodies in Lady Bird Lake ran rampant last April. That's when Police recovered the bodies of Jason John, Clifton Axtell, Jonathon Honey, and Christopher Hays-Clark — all between the ages of 20 and 40 and all recovered from Lady Bird Lake. Reegan Aparicio says she has no doubts that her longtime boyfriend Chris Hays-Clark was placed in Lady Bird Lake. The dental nurse says despite police assurances that there was no foul play in Hays-Clark's death, she believes he was already dead when he went into the water. Even though police have given no indication there are signs of foul play, social media has lit up with speculation. The dental nurse says despite police assurances that there was no foul play in Hays-Clark's death, she believes he was already dead when he went into the water. That sentiment, according to DailyMail, is shared by others who have lost loved ones to the lake. Jason John's parents also believe there is more to his disappearance and his former roommate believes he was drugged. Martin Gutierrez's brother says he believes Martin was murdered in 2018. Despite family concerns, Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon says, "Nothing has come to light that would indicate that there is a serial killer in Austin." Welcome back to the Texas News podcast where we dive into all things Texas politics and the future of Texas independence. On today's show, we discuss our ongoing legal battle with the RPT and how the TNM is working day and night to ensure that 139,000+ petition signers have their voices heard. We also tear apart a piece of propaganda from the San Antonio Current, talk about some very interesting developments in our litigation, and discuss the importance of electing Texas First candidates.  As you know, we have been in the throws of a battle with the Republican Party of Texas since early January. After rejecting 139,000+ petition signatures in support of putting the TEXIT referendum on the 2024 Primary ballot, it's safe to say the RPT is trying to circumvent the law and trying to deny the people's vote on TEXIT. So in this episode, we lay some of the groundwork and context about our litigation, and then we talk about what this could all look like moving forward. It's about time the political establishment stops treating the law like a cafeteria plan.

Bekah McNeel is our final guest of Season Three.  Bekah is a native of San Antonio, Texas, where she has been a reporter for nine years. Her work has appeared in print with Christianity Today, The San Antonio Current, and the Public Justice Review, as well as online with the Christian Science Monitor, Sojourners, the Texas Tribune, the Hechinger Report, The 74 Million, and numerous local outlets.Bekah calls herself a story-teller, but she is especially known for her ability to communicate the high stakes of education and immigration policy and bring clarity to complex systems. Bekah keeps the human beings most affected at the front of her coverage.Bekah is married to Lewis McNeel, an architect. They have two young children who, while they do not yet have careers, are very busy (winky face). On this episode, which was prompted by Bekah's recent book, Bringing Up Kids When Church Lets You Down, we chat through all the ups and downs of parenting while deconstructing. This is one of those conversations that will make you wanting more and yet feeling so full at the same time.Bekah is brilliant, a bit snarky in a wonderful way, highly self-aware of her strengths and struggles and gives us solid reasons why this whole parenting journey is not about our kids. It's mostly about us. How can we reparent ourselves in this new faith and freedom that we find ourselves in, while also trying to heal from the harm that's been done to us so that we do not pass it along to our children. You can find Bekah at the following:Instagram:  @wanderbekah Facebook:  Bekah McNeel Website:  bekahmcneel.com

Joseph Green discusses parapolitics, deep politics, and conspiracy theory. He correctly observes that “if you don't understand that the state killed JFK, and MLK, and RFK, and Malcolm X, and a whole lot of others besides, you're never really going to fundamentally understand how the world works.” He explains how to be a conspiracy theorist and how not to be a conspiracy theorist! Conspiracy theory is simply political analysis that the State doesn't like. If you're looking at things from the left-right paradigm, you're not going to get good analysis that way. It's more like we're dealing with competing mobsters. We wind up the week with The San Antonio Current announcing that Texas craft breweries can now sell beer to go! Last week’s #caskquiz asked “when was the last time you played a beer game and what was it?” This week in the spirit of Utopias we want to know “what’s the wildest/most extreme beer is that you have tried?” We so love hearing from you! Our discussion focused on the high level issues associated with climate change and why we are experience hurricane with ever increasing intensity like hurricanes Harvey and Irma. We also discussed ground level issues in the Houston community regarding toxic pollution from local chemical plants and oil refineries. Our guests were: Dr. Kerry Cook - Climate Scientists at the University of Texas Kerry Cook came to The University of Texas at Austin in August 2008. She began her career at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab at Princeton University, followed by 18 years as a professor at Cornell University. At UT, she teaches graduate courses in geophysical fluid dynamics, and a popular undergraduate course on Global Warming. Dr. Cook is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, and served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and an editor of the Journal of Climate. Dr. Cook's research centers on predicting and understanding climate change and climate variability around the world, including Africa, South America, the central U.S., and home in Austin, TX. She and her group use numerical models of the climate system, including atmosphere, ocean, and vegetation components, along with observational analysis to improve our understanding about how features and processes at the earth's surface interact with atmospheric circulation and precipitation fields. Kristal Ibarra-Rodríguez - Volunteer Coordinator with the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club After serving as a long-time volunteer with the Sierra Club at both local and national levels, Kristal now works with Lone Star Chapter volunteer leaders and staff to develop and implement outreach programs that support the work of existing volunteers and aim to recruit new ones. Prior to this role, she conducted outreach on waste management practices in California with successful efforts toward achieving the ambitious goal of 75% waste diversion from landfills by 2020. Kristal is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, her home island, where she studied General Science with particular focus on Environmental Education and Sociology. Luke Metzger - Executive Director of Environment Texas Luke Metzger is the State Director of Environment Texas, a statewide, citizen-funded advocate for clean air, clean water and open spaces. The San Antonio Current has called Mr. Metzger "long one of the most energetic and dedicated defenders of environmental issues in the state." He has played a key role in dozens of successful environmental campaigns, including winning permanent protection for the Christmas Mountains of Big Bend, getting Shell and Chevron Phillips to cut air pollution at two Texas refineries and chemical plants, and getting the Legislature to dramatically boost funding for water conservation and state parks. Ashely “Flashe’ Gordon, was on the phone with us as she was on the ground in Port Arthur in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey Ashely is an environmental and social activist. Taking care of the community has always been her priority. Both of her parents served in the community during Ashely’s childhood. That is when she learned that our community is our family and we have a responsibility to that family. She returned to Austin in 2013 after the death of my father in 2008 with a renewed passion to serve in Travis County. Ashely was a candidate for Travis County Commissioner in 2017. She now lives in Port Arthur Texas, which was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. For more info about the environmental impacts of Hurricane Harvey, the EcoNetwork wrote two blogs on the subject. http://austineconetwork.com/hurricane-harvey-how-it-happened-and-how-to-help/ http://austineconetwork.com/environmental-consequences-of-hurricane-harvey/

Episode 61: Bekah Kelso And The Fellas RADIO - No StrangerThanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast, I'm your host, Mario Zamarron. Before we dive into the reason you all tuned in, I wanted to talk about something that's going to have an effect on live music ever so slightly north from San Antonio in a city called Cibolo. Nick Marquez, an avid music lover and business owner, will be opening a bar and live music venue called Old Main Ice House. We caught up with Nick at the 2015 Cibolo Food Truck Round-Up, hosted by Michael LaMonica and the city of Cibolo. Nick was awesome enough to sponsor the music that night, which included the Jesse Stratton Band, Storm Calysta, and Broken Duckfeet. Huge shout out to Michael and Nick for allowing us to suggest Storm Calysta. Just like I knew would happen, they we're both very impressed, as was the crowd. A few different times, there were even a few people dancing! This event in Cibolo and the Old Main Ice House coming soon, in my opinion, will bridge a gap for local music in San Antonio to reach farther up North IH-35, towards Austin and vice versa. My hopes are that it will also open up the city of Cibolo to more local music appreciation. Here's a brief interview I did with Nick about Old Main Ice House. Now, for what you've all been waiting for… Out of all of the people I've gotten to meet during my time doing the podcast, one stuck out to me as one of the nicest. Not only did she help us out for our 210 Toys For Tots charity concert at the 502 Bar, she's also liked and shared our posts, and recently, listed us as someone to vote for in the San Antonio Current's Music Awards for this year. Aside from being awesome in general, she also just had a baby! I won't go into too much detail due to my belief in privacy, but Bekah, congrats on the birth of your beautiful baby, from your 210 Local Media family! Thanks for tuning in to 210 Local Media Podcast, I'm your host, Mario Zamarron. I know most people celebrate 50 episodes, but we were in the middle of Local Music Week, and I didn't want our milestone to overshadow the theme of the week. So, we're doing it now. We're celebrating 60 episodes. In less than 3 years, we've managed to develop a global audience, we've conducted 17 interviews, played over 30 episodes of almost pure music, played over 18 entire albums from beginning to end, we've done a benefit concert for Toys for Tots, we've attend the Alamo City ComicCon twice (soon to be thrice), we've been able to get media access to other events, and we've connected with so many musicians, artists, filmmakers, and entertainers. We're so happy at what we've accomplished within 60 episodes, but like any artist, we're hungry for more. Right now, we're trying to at least make the top three finalists in the San Antonio Current's Best of Music issue. We've conducted some more interviews and plan on even more moving into the next 60 episodes. We'll soon launch our Patreon crowd funding page to help with the rising costs of being a podcaster and give people the opportunity to gain access to Patreon only content.Recently on Facebook, I asked for audience and music community feedback on who we should play on this 60th episode. Without further ado, here are the musicians and bands that have been requested via Facebook and our 60th episode, Listeners Choice Supermix. Episode 33: San Antonio Women of Rock Volume 2For those who've been listening, thanks a ton and welcome back. For those who are joining us for the first time, welcome to the podcast where you can enjoy what San Antonio has to offer. We've largely been focused on music, but we also enjoy bringing you art, film, and various forms of entertainment in and around the greater San Antonio area. Take a listen to our back catalogue for tons of interviews and amazing indie music, as well as our San Antonio Women of Rock episode, #31. This is the second part or volume 2 of that episode, but the term ‘rock' is being used loosely since we've got some country, folk, and indie tunes. Let's dive right in!Bekah Kelso, ReverbNation's #7 on the Pop/Indie/Soul-Folk Bohemian chart and San Antonio Current's 2013 winner for Best Singer Songwriter and Best Song. She reminds me of the best of KT Tunstall, Poe, and Tracy Bonham. Bekah was amazing at our 210 Toys for Tots charity event and is someone I'm really hoping to work with again soon. Here's the lovely Bekah Kelso with Grey's Not Easy.Bonnie Lang is ranked #5 on ReverbNation's Americana/Blues/Classic Rock/Texas Music chart, and has really been our token country singer on the podcast. I know her personally and hope to have her on the show soon. She can always be heard at Stone Works, Bobby J's and several other San Antonio locales. Here's Bonnie Lang with Desperate. As far as the podcast, you might remember Erica Swan as being the founder of Love in Rome from episode #9, but like a rolling stone, she's gone on to start a new project, Ila Minori. Erica has music in her soul and exudes a soothing and intriguing shoe gaze sound, akin to Mazzy Star. Her ability to find musical inspiration everywhere, makes her one of the most prolific songstress' of our city. She also donated her time and performed for the 210 Toys for Tots charity show as well. Here's Ila Minor with Ivory Lounge.Another 210 Alum, Laura Marie, who also played the 210 Toys for Tots show, is someone you should definitely keep your eye on. She is ranked #1 on ReverbNation's Singer Songwriter/Folk/Pop charts and is always busy working on new music. Here's Laura Marie with Lunatic Moon.Even though the March Divide is usually vocal led by Jared Putnam, I wanted to showcase the work of fellow bandmate, Laura Wheeler. Although not a permanent member of The March Divide, who is really Jared, Mike Hernandez on drums, and Patrick Reetz on bass, I really enjoy the songs featuring Laura's voice. From Their Music for Film album, here's The March Divide with Pick Me Up.Finally, I'm proud to introduce Our Divine Romance. Ranked #10 on ReverbNation's Alternative/Singer Songwriter chart, Suzy Martinez heads ODR. Although Suzy is currently out of town attending school, she's released a couple of tracks from a future release, which have left me wanting to hear more. Here's Our Divine Romance with As Winter Stays.Track List:Bekah Kelso - Grey's Not EasyBonnie Lang - DesperateIla Minori - Ivory LoungeLaura Marie - Lunatic MoonMarch Divide - Pick Me UpOur Divine Romance - As Winter Stays Let us know what you thought of the episode or the individual bands on the episode by leaving us a voicemail at (210)802-1197, or find us on Twitter and Facebook at 210 Local Media. 3This episode is brought to you by Audible.com.
