Minisode - The Fight For Production to #StayinLA

Life With C**a

It's no secret that, over the past decade, film and television production has been slowly leaving our hub of Los Angeles. From astronomical permit costs to uncompetitive tax incentives, studios have outsourced LA's most valuable export to places like Atlanta, Vancouver, Australia, and South Africa. The COVID pandemic exacerbated the production exodus. But for some, the final straw came with the devastation caused by the Palisades and Eaton fires.  Thousands of families lost their homes, and our local crew members were no exception. With the fires still burning, filmmakers began organizing amongst themselves to fight the good fight - to keep production in LA and, in the process, bring jobs back to the people who need them the most. That brings us to today's very important episode. I got to sit down with Sarah Adina Smith and Alexandra Pechman, the two filmmakers helming the #StayinLA movement. At the time of this recording, their petition to keep production in LA has garnered just over 20,000 signatures. We discuss the impact of the production exodus, the civic responsibility on the studios' shoulders to keep our LA neighbors working, and specific action items for anyone who wants to get involved, starting at the local level. Please consider adding your name to the petition and helping the cause by visiting stayinla.org.

Buster’s Mal Heart is a bold thriller peppered with dark humor and interlocking mystery, an eccentric mountain man is on the run from the authorities, surviving the winter by breaking into empty vacation homes in a remote community. Regularly calling into radio talk shows — where he has acquired the nickname "Buster" — to rant about the impending Inversion at the turn of the millennium, he is haunted by visions of being lost at sea, and memories of his former life as a family man. Buster (Rami Malek) was once Jonah, a hard-working husband and father whose job as the night-shift concierge at a hotel took its toll on his psyche and, consequently, his marriage to the sensitive Marty (Kate Lyn Sheil) — until a chance encounter with a conspiracy-obsessed drifter (DJ Qualls) changed the course of their lives forever. As the solitary present-day Buster drifts from house to house, eluding the local sheriff at every turn, we gradually piece together the events that fractured his life and left him alone on top of a snowy mountain, or perhaps in a small rowboat in the middle of a vast ocean — or both, in this visceral mind bender that will provoke discussion long after it turns your world upside-down. Director and writer Sarah Adina Smith joins us to talk about her wildly entertaining tale. For news and updates go to: bustersmalheart.com

Sarah Adina Smith's The Midnight Swim is not a film that can easily be summarized. At its core it is a family drama about the connection between three half-sisters and their mother who has mysteriously gone missing. However, it also features elements from the found footage genre, a wonderful musical number, a shawl that is downright creepy, and deep questions about the transcendent nature of death. Needless to say there is a lot to chew on in this episode. We also discuss our short films picks of the week: Donato Sansone's Journal Anime and Ben Brand's Life is Beautiful.

On this episode we are joined by Nick Antosca, writer on the critically acclaimed television series HANNIBAL, to talk about FRIDAY THE 13th, a film he knows a little something about as he is the writer behind the upcoming reboot of the series. The other movie we will be pairing up with that horror classic is another favorite of the genre in ON GOLDEN POND. Keep listening to the episode to see if Mr. Antosca will be taking over the reboot of that particular property. This odd double feature of Film Families on the Lake has been inspired by Sarah Adina Smith’s new film THE MIDNIGHT SWIM, who was nice enough to talk with us about the inspiration for the script and the filmmaking techniques she used to put audiences in a character's head.

Director Sarah Adina Smith (Legion, Room 104, The Midnight Swim) speaks with us very candidly about how she had to make her own opportunities to get her career off the ground. She breaks down exactly how she used an unorthodox approach in making her first Microbudget feature, then tells us how she pivoted into directing TV for Amazon Prime and HBO (no big deal!).    Be sure to look out for Sarah's name in the credits for the upcoming Amazon Prime series, Hanna.   UNPAID ENDORSEMENTS: Oren: Christopher Robert Gray & Jaye McAuliffe (our intrepid editors!)
