Synopsis: The Usual Place host Natasha Ann Zachariah hunts for new perspectives on issues that matter to young people.Saudi Arabia, China’s Lijiang and Yunnan, and… Central Asia? Could these be the next big holiday destinations for 2025?This week on The Usual Place, Straits Times Life travel journalist Sarah Stanley and co-founder of The Travel Intern Hendric Tay share why they think these lesser-known spots might see more tourists this year.Drawing from industry conversations and their own observations, “new adventures in lesser-known spots” seem to be the 2025 motto of Singaporean travellers. Social media, Hendric explains, has nudged people to step out of their comfort zones. But, he cautions, “they also need to make the right preparations for it.”In this episode, the talk of travel dives into whether sustainable travel is just a gimmick for charging more and why solo travel continues to be a big draw for young adventurers. The discussion also goes into the complexities of group travel, whether with friends or colleagues. The trio share anecdotes and tips on how to manage different travel styles and priorities. For example, setting ground rules and finding compromises can help keep a trip drama-free. Sarah reflects on her experience travelling with colleagues as an air stewardess, noting how being accommodating of others has shaped her travel habits (It’s not always a bad thing, she explains.) Hendric recommends activity-based trips for first-time travel companions as a great way to understand each other’s preferences. With all the talk about exploring new places and making new memories, Natasha wanted to know which country these seasoned travellers would visit over and over again? Travel scams are on the rise. While not all travel scams end in violence, most leave unsuspecting tourists helpless and vulnerable. You may think you're smart enough to spot a scam, but you never know. A Straits Times' journalist thought so as well, but she fell prey. How did that happen? How can we be more aware? What are some things we need to note before travelling to protect ourselves from these kinds of scams? On What's Trending, Hongbin Jeong speaks to Clara Lock, Assistant Life Editor, and Sarah Stanley, Journalist, both from The Straits Times. For fun, I had a little chat with Aretha Franklin. There are endless ways this AI technology could preserve your life story while you can remember and tell it. But what if your memories, or a loved one's, are disappearing through dementia or Alzheimer's? Dan Thompson founded Sensay on the principles of memory preservation to aid dementia patients. Thinking about how you could develop these ideas could prove revolutionary for families and those who suffer from such illnesses. It would be interesting to see some actual cases of its use for this purpose. In later editions, I'll revisit the product with an update. Even perhaps patients who face Motor Neurone Disease taking their voice, now unable to speak the stories of their life anymore, could do through a replica forever?* What do you think about this idea? * Does the idea of preserving your wisdom and experiences in this way appeal to you? * How could this be used to store and access generations of life stories from your family? The recent release of the road map to digital immortality with true fully autonomous replicas by 2029, was complimented by the recent updated Replica studio. Now choose a Replica for work or a personal persona. Then evolve it over time by training your digital twin with text, pictures and videos. Hey you wild women! Today I am joined by Sarah Stanley. I connected with Sarah through her impressive marathon and ultra-running background. Sarah used the knowledge she learned from farming, as a sponsored ultra-endurance athlete and health, wellness, and nutrition expert. Sarah runs the bakery ‘Hannah Cakes', using her childhood growing up on an organic farm to make delicious treats that are healthy and nourishing too! The products she creates are top 9 allergen-free (no gluten, wheat, soy, dairy, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, corn, or shellfish). She has run countless marathons and is the author of Live Freely: Six Weeks to Detox Your Mind, Body, Spirit, Money, Home and Life. Not only does she participate in marathons and run her bakery, she also runs her life. Sarah has an almost 2-year-old boy at home, and she involves him in every part of her day. He helps her as she bakes while she teaches him valuable life skills to help him as he grows up. In This Episode, You Will Learn About: How Sarah turned the physicality she learned on the farm into a love of ultra-running Her learning curve when setting up her business Believing in doing what you can with what you have - not everyone has unlimited resources and you should turn what you do have into an advantage How not worrying about perfection and having a ‘just do it' attitude leads to creativity Her biggest mistake: Trying to turn a hobby into a job despite the lack of generated income The importance of having flexibility in your mindset Having the courage to admit what does and does not work Leveraging social media to create deeper client connections Avoiding the trappings of platforms like Instagram - success isn't always visual Learning the story behind the name ‘Hannah Cakes' and her thoughts on rebranding How the work ethic from her youth translates to her business What kind of substitutes does she use for ingredients? They knocked on doors, phoned voters, and tried to make sense of national stories on a local level while documenting their experience. These personal accounts provided fodder for the new Canadian play The Election, by Natasha Greenblatt and Yolanda Bonnell, in collaboration with the company. In 2019 The Election sparks urgent dialogue just as Canadians take another swing at the ballot box. Exploring the realities of Indigenous, Settler and Newcomer experience with the political process, this play asks: Do we have a voice and does that voice count?Following the wildly successful run of The Public Servant, Common Boots Theatre delivers a provocative and hilarious investigation of how Canadians engage in democracy. The team of six actors (Augusto Bitter, Rachel Cairns, Joelle Peters, Anand Rajaram, Rose Stella, and Courtenay Stevens) take on over 35 characters. October 6th, 2019 - Sarah Stanley • William Tyndale by All Souls Anglican Church
#190: More than 20 years ago, affluence researchers Dr. Thomas Stanley and Dr. William Danko surveyed a vast number of millionaire households in the United States. What they discovered was groundbreaking at the time. The average U.S. millionaire, they found, lives a frugal lifestyle. They are disproportionately clustered in modest, middle-class neighborhoods. They drive used cars. They don’t spend money on jewelry, watches, boats or other high-ticket items. They’re self-made, meaning they did not inherit their wealth; they’re first-generation millionaires. In 1996, the researchers published their findings in a book called The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy. The book became a mega-bestseller and, to this day, remains a top personal finance classic. Fast-forward to 2012. Dr. Thomas Stanley’s daughter, Sarah, followed in her father’s footsteps. She’s grown up to become a researcher, earning a Ph.D. in applied psychology and exploring the world of behavioral finance. She became the Director of Research for the Affluent Market Institute, the research company her father founded, and she launched her own research firm, DataPoints. In 2012, Dr. Sarah Stanley Fallaw and Dr. Thomas Stanley decided to update their research on millionaire households in anticipation of the 20th anniversary of the publication of The Millionaire Next Door. They wanted to see what attributes are different, 20 years later, and what qualities remain the same. They crafted another large-scale survey of millionaires. Yet before they could complete the project, tragedy intervened. In 2015, Dr. Thomas Stanley was killed in a car accident. He was hit by a drunk driver. His daughter resolved to finish the research that the two of them started together. She sent out the survey they created, gathered and analyzed the results, and published a sequel, The Next Millionaire Next Door, co-authored with her late father. The book is Dr. Thomas Stanley’s final, posthumously-published book. The book was released in October 2018, twenty-two years after the original. On today’s podcast episode, Dr. Sarah Stanley Fallaw joins us to describe what’s different about millionaires, more than two decades later … … and what’s remained the same. How will YOU become the next millionaire next door? Believe it or not, it's been 23 years since The Millionaire Next Door shook the foundation of what people thought about wealth. You mean LOTS of people built their wealth in other ways than inheriting a bunch of money or working in huge income jobs? ...and that just because you LOOK wealthy doesn't mean you ARE wealthy? Today we talk to Dr. Sarah Fallaw (researcher and also the daughter of Thomas Stanley, author of the Millionaire Next Door) about how YOU can set yourself up to join this elite group. We'll discuss your friends, where you live, financial advisors, and more. Plus in our headlines segment, the results of a new survey are out about investor expectations, and they aren't good. Many investors have...maybe unrealistic ideas about their investment strategies. We'll explain on the show. Plus, one company has created a new credit card that will help you save into your 401(k) plan every time you save. Too good to be true? We'll answer that question on the show. Then we'll throw out the Haven Life Line to Jon, who wants us to shed some light on the difference between a Roth 401k and an after tax basis employee savings and stock ownership plan. When youth workers ask me about the qualities they should seek to develop in their lives and ministries, there are three that I’m always sure to mention: humility, teachability, and cooperation. Pride kills ministry. Without a determination to learn we get horribly stale. And if we aren’t working with others we forfeit the great benefits of ministering together as part of the body of Christ. How can we intentionally position ourselves to serve Christ, kids, and families most effectively? What does it look like to be a part of a ministry team where all generations learn from each other? And what are the benefits of doing youth ministry in this way? We’ll talk to a multi-generational team of youth workers who are committed to carrying the youth ministry baton together, on this episode of youth culture matters.

Doctors have had great success using vaccines to boost the immune system to fight infectious diseases like smallpox and measles, but only recently have immune system boosters been tried against cancer. The growing success of such attempts – a booming field called immunotherapy that was pioneered at UC Berkeley – proves that studying the way the immune system deals with these two types of invaders, cancer cells and pathogens, could greatly improve therapies for both. In this video, Russell Vance and Sarah Stanley talk about the advantages of combining the study of cancer with the study of infectious disease in UC Berkeley's new Immunotherapeutics and Vaccine Research Initiative. About two years ago I came across Sarah Stanley online which led to a few email exchanges about running and health. And over the course of the last two years I have been both continually impressed and encouraged as I have watched her explore the outer limits of her abilities (physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually) through her ulta-running, all the while being fueled on a plant based diet. And her running resume is impressive: 26 marathons, Boston qualifying, 7 50 mile races, and 4 100 mile races...and on and on and on. The intersection of running and food has been resonating with me the last couple of years and is the reason why I wanted to sit down with Sarah and interview her on my podcast. As you will be able to tell from this interview, Sarah is full of life, and is passionate about so many things. I love that excitement and I love the message she brings at the intersection of our fitness, food and faith. In this podcast we will explore: being born and growing up on one of the first certified organic farms in the country her journey into running from her first 8k to qualifying for Boston to her first 50 and hundred mile races. the importance of not only food, but what kind of food we put into our bodies. the issues that she is passionate about such as food advocacy and justice issues. the intersection of food and our faith and how they can't be separated from one another. her passion to empower church leaders to lead the way in promoting a healthier message around food, fitness and social justice issues. her Live Freely curriculum
