How might we relate to the standards that our culture hands us around parenting, partnering, working, and being a person? On the one hand, they can be of immense value. They can give us a way to orient to what might be important and worth paying attention to. But on the other hand they can be stultifying, the source of endless comparison and self-criticism, and an impossible goal of perfection. And they can leave us feeling very alone as we look around us and imagine that other people's lives are not as messy, confusing, and unpredictable as ours are.  So can we might find a more life-giving way to relate to the standards and ideals we choose to live by? What might happen if instead of turning to social media and our own fantasies about other people, we turned simultaneously towards our own way of knowing and to the wisdom of others around us as we each take our next steps in the roles in life we're pursuing? Hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's our source for this week, from a message between Molly, a mum, and her birth doula Natalie. Not Trying to Be Perfect Hello Natalie… I cannot tell you how much more content I am now that I have ditched social media and trying to be perfect. I have a wonderful set of mum friends and we can go to each others' houses even when it's so untidy it looks like we've been burgled, join in with whatever that night's plans for tea are and let our kids play or fall asleep on the sofa while we hang out. It's great. The Shirley Hughes book is so lovely. Nobody in her illustrations has an immaculate house or sensory play bins. Her children accompany mums and dads on errands and cooking and gardening and the school run. That's enough. I've gone back to a corporate job and really, in what industry would you ask one person to work day and night shifts as CEO, CFO, COO, CTO, personal assistant, drive, head of logistics, head of learning and development, washerwoman, cleaner and cook all in one. It's ridiculous. No wonder so many parents are miserable. They feel like a failure because we set impossible expections. Which leads me back to the only tick list one should have at the end of day… ‘all fed, none dead, mostly in bed'. My new standard is… everyone warm and dry, clean bum, have we been outside, full tummies, making sure we eat some vegetables, not too much telly, focusing on kindness to each other. I find it so much easier to REALLY feel my red lines/bondaries this way. It works for us. Lots of love Molly Photo by Luis Tosta on Unsplash

Everyone is going through a change right now. People are realizing what they want out of their careers, and companies need to respond by redefining their culture, values, and leadership. In this episode, Shirley Hughes discusses Rogers & Cowan PMK's struggles and solutions in adapting to the new normal. Listen as Shirley shares how they redefined their workplace and leadership to accommodate the needs, values, perspectives and diversity of their team. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Redefine work and leadership. Listen to your team and accommodate their needs. Pay attention to other people's mental health. Be open to different experiences and perspectives. Know what you want from your company and career. [10:38] Redefining Work Each organization and philosophy is different. It's important to do right by your team and rethink what's normal right now. Let people deal with whatever they need to deal with in their personal lives. Consider generational differences as well. Try to listen to your team and find out what they need. [15:19] Managing People Our mental health should be taken into consideration now more than ever. Everyone is struggling to adjust to the new norm. However, the hybrid work environment allows for collaboration and camaraderie among team members. [22:55] Different Experiences and Perspectives Certain things come with age, such as experience. Every experience brought to the table is important. They allow us to make decisions based on firsthand knowledge. If you want to work through the different dynamics in the workplace, listen to your team. Be transparent if you don't have answers and be open to different perspectives. [30:40] Balancing Work and Life Working at home has allowed people to integrate their lives into their work more and make time for themselves. Employees are becoming more clear on what they value and are more deeply considering the culture that companies stand for. Guest Bio: Shirley Hughes is the President of the Brand Marketing Division at Rogers & Cowan PMK. The special bond of the mother and daughter - and its complexities - are up for discussion this week. Radio 3's regular writing programme hears about the concept of being "parentified" from Warsan Shire in her new collection examining the experience of displacement endured by her family. And Ruth Padel joins us to talk about Daughters of the Labyrinth, a novel which sees central character Ri investigate a secret history. Ruth also takes us through the Cretan performance poem the Mantinades, and even gives us a rendition. Think beautiful, ancient Cretan rap battle... And Hollie McNish reads us her poem Sweet Separation about the pangs felt when a daughter begins the process of developing her independence. Hollie discusses the somehow inadequate terminology of motherhood and how we consider, or rather reject, the postpartum female body. And following the death of beloved children's author and illustrator Shirley Hughes, Lissa Evans describes an artist with a unique ability to capture the small details of children's lives and encompass them in kindness. She discusses how Shirley's work made a difference to her non-traditional family, and how adopting daughters led to an interest in the experience of wartime evacuees. Her latest book is V for Victory. Presented by Ian McMillan. Produced by Kevin Core.

Ed Vulliamy has worked all around the world as a journalist; he’s best-known for his prize-winning coverage of the war in Bosnia, on television and in The Guardian. The war crimes he reported on led to his becoming a witness in the trial of the Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, and he was the first journalist since the Nuremberg trials to testify at an international war crimes tribunal. He went on to cover the 9/11 attacks in New York, and more recently the drug wars on the US/Mexico border. Ed Vulliamy is also the son of the much-loved children’s author Shirley Hughes, something that often eclipses all his other achievements, and he was immortalised as a teenager in her books. Music has been crucial to him all through his career, and in conversation with Michael Berkeley he reveals that his very first job was as an extra in a production of Aida. He talks movingly about his experience in Bosnia, about the psychological after-effects of being so near the horror of war, and about why he wishes he’d been a cartoonist instead. Music choices include Verdi, Schubert, Shostakovich, Joan Baez, Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro”, and the Bosnian singer Amira Medunjanin. On her 90th birthday, Shirley Hughes, the creator of many of our best-loved and most enduring children's books, talks to Michael Berkeley about her musical passions. In a career spanning nearly seventy years Shirley has written as many books and has illustrated nearly two hundred. She was the first winner of the Book Trust Lifetime Achievement Award, has twice won the Kate Greenaway Medal, and was recently awarded a CBE for services to literature. Her picture books have an enduring appeal with their sympathetic but unsentimental depiction of the small dramas and joys of family life. One of her most loved, Dogger, the tale of a beloved toy dog lost and found, has its 40th anniversary this year. The winner of numerous awards, she recently received a CBE for services to literature.
