Glossy reporters Lexy Lebsack, Sara Spruch-Feiner and Emma Sandler welcomed dozens of guests onto the Glossy Beauty Podcast in 2024. This included top executives at L'Oréal Group and Kendo Brands; longtime industry leaders from Retrouvé and Versed; and breakout indie brand founders from Flamingo Estate and Fazit. But it was the six interviews highlighted below that best capture the ways in which the beauty industry changed in 2024. In today's special end-of-year podcast episode, Lebsack and Spruch-Feiner walk through six can't-miss clips. In the clips ahead, Estée Lauder VP Chloe Green-Vamos discusses how the conglomerate is utilizing AI to better the business while longtime beauty exec Sarah Creal muses about reaching women over 40 with her new namesake line — two massive trends that swept the industry this year. This special 2024 episode also highlights an important change in retail's role in business, as heard in a clip from Black Girl Sunscreen founder Shontay Lundy's September episode. Speaking of sunscreen, Beauty of Joseon founder Sumin Lee joined the pod this month to discuss entering the U.S. market with the TikTok-famous brand. In another clip, Beachwaver's Sarah Potempa shares the secret behind her knockdown success live-selling business on TikTok. And finally, in Glossy's Tweens Talk Beauty episode, three Gen Alpha tween shoppers discuss the role beauty plays in their lives. The Glossy Beauty Podcast will be back next week with another special episode looking ahead at 2025 and will return on January 9 with our regular episodes.

Shontay Lundy is on a mission to disrupt the sun-care space.  She is the founder of Black Girl Sunscreen, a sunscreen brand she launched in 2016 as an alternative to the many sunscreen formulas that leave a white cast on skin, a problem that's particularly noticeable on medium and dark complexions. The line was an instant hit and she quickly gained wide distribution at Target, CVS, Ulta Beauty, Walgreens, and Walmart, among other retailers. The brand also sells direct-to-consumer and on Amazon. In 2019, Lundy launched a children's line called BGS Kids, which features its own branding and social marketing channels, and just this month, a men's line called BGS Mens. The latter also has its own branding, to match the matte finish and more masculine scent.  All of the brands' products range in price from $10-$23 and are formulated to melt seamlessly into all complexions, whether the formula uses a chemical, mineral or hybrid UV filter. They also feature hydrating ingredients like jojoba oil and shea butter, which deliver a dewy, hydrated finish in some formulas.  But beyond products, Lundy is on a mission to educate Black consumers about the value of sunscreen, in hopes of debunking the myth that people with dark complexions don't need sunscreen. As we know, the deadliest form of skin cancer, called melanoma, impacts people of all skin tones and ethnic backgrounds.  Lundy spoke about managing the line's omnichannel distribution on the Glossy Beauty Podcast. She shares that being in the biggest retailers in the country comes with its own unique set of difficulties. What's more, Black Girl Sunscreen's success means that resources must be allocated for battling counterfeiters on marketplace sites. She also discusses the brand's robust out-of-home marketing strategy, which includes billboards celebrating its many campaigns.

7 Best Sunscreens for Dark Skin

Welcome to Bri Books! Today I'm sharing the 7 best sunscreens for dark skin. It's the dog days of summer: when temperatures start to soar around sunrise. I'm somewhat on the sunscreen beat, you could say, thanks to my writing about SPFs at Glamour.com. My stories include a review of Black Girl Sunscreen and ‘11 Women of Color on the Best Sunscreens for Dark Skin.'   1:30: The fact is, anyone, no matter skin tone, can get sunburned. Repeated unprotected sun exposure can cause skin damage, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer. It's no secret that historically the beauty industry hasn't made slathering up with SPF an enjoyable experience--far too many formulations aren't made to blend in on dark skin. I'm sharing with you my holy grail picks that don't leave a greasy residue or ashy tone behind. 2:55: #1: Black Girl Sunscreen's founder, Shontay Lundy, was having a beach day in Miami and had a hard time finding a sunscreen that didn't leave residue on her skin. At that moment, BGSS was born as a solution for Black women looking to protect their skin. Since they've, they've expanded nationally to Target stores and secured a $1M investment recently. One of my favorite things about BGSS is that it absorbs quickly and is a great base for makeup. I can't tell you what a relief it is to be able to sweat without worrying if sunscreen is leaving streaks down my face. BGSS is available at Target for $15.99.  4:20 #2: La Roche Posay SPF 100 Anthelios Face and Body sunscreen: This is a sunscreen I reach for whenever I'm on a beach or outdoors all day. At SPF 100, it's great for children and adults with sun-sensitive skin. It melts right into the skin and is great if you need to be confident in your SPF protection if you're hiking, walking, or at the beach. I recommend it for part of your year-round SPF collection. La Roche Posay SPF 100 is available online for $25.00.  5:36: #3: Peter Thomas Roth Max Matte SPF 45: This mattifying shine control sunscreen feels so luxurious. I love the weightless, sheer finish it gives. The texture feels like any other moisturizer, but with the protection of sunscreen. Pro tip: Use this SPF to create your dream tinted moisturizer: I recommend applying a few drops of liquid foundation into the SPF. Also, this sunscreen is phenomenal for the decolletage, and for building the habit of applying sunscreen to the neck, collar, top of the chest, and other areas that are prone to burning. Peter Thomas Roth Max Matte SPF 45 is available for $34 at Sephora. 7:25 #4: La Roche Posay AOX SPF Serum: This has become my favorite SPF serum because it reminds me of the importance of wearing sunscreen year-round. During winter, when we don't have to worry about sweat, we have to stay vigilant about wearing sunscreen. It's lightweight enough to be worn alone, with a moisturizer, or under makeup.  La Roche Posay AOX SPF Serum is available for $42.50. 8:20: #5: Bask Suncare SPF 30: This sunscreen feels good and does good at the same time. Bask Suncare partners with the Sun Protection Foundation to increase access to sunscreen. This reef-safe SPF is free of oxybenzone, parabens, sulfates, and irritants, and I feel the light vanilla and coconut scent gives a childhood memory of days and nights spent outside. Bask Suncare SPF 30 is available for $28 at Basksuncare.com 9:40 #6: Sol de Janerio Bum Bum Sol Oil SPF30: This super luxe feeling and smelling oil formula combines reef-safe SPF30 and skin smoothers like capucha butter and acai oil. It's infused with Sol de Janeiro's iconic fragrance, and it's one of the sunscreens I reach for if I'm having a long day in the sand or a sweaty day in NYC. After showering, I'll throw this oil on my body and go about my day. The scent has peachy-tropical notes with hints of coconut vanilla. It truly smells like summer. Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Sol Oil SPF30 is available for $38. 11:20 #7: Farmacy Green Defense Mineral Sunscreen: This zinc oxide mineral sunscreen sits on the skin surface to reflect damaging UVA and UVB rays. This is a great SPF pick if you want to dip your toe into the world of mineral sunscreens. I put it on the areas that are underlooked and prone to burning, like the back of my legs, the inside of my arms, etc. It's definitely the SPF I'll be using this fall and winter to remind me that if the sun's up, the sunscreen's gotta go on. Farmacy Green Defense Mineral Sunscreen is available at Sephora for $36.    ARTICLES MENTIONED 11 Best Sunscreens for Dark Skin Black Girl Sunscreen Review SPF GRAPHICS/ INSTAGRAM POSTS 6 Best Sunscreens for Dark Skin IG Reels  3 Beach-Perfect Sunscreens for Your Next Beach Day

Today, I'm excited to be chatting with Shontay Lundy, founder of Black Girl Sunscreen. During our conversation, Shontay discusses what it's been like building a better sunscreen for Black people. She talks about how she started by doing some very simple Google searches like “sunscreen for brown skin” and “sunscreen for black skin.” The results she saw offered nothing that spoke to her. So, from there, she hit the ground running to develop what we know today as Black Girl Sunscreen. The brand's products offer sun protection sans the sticky, white residue many SPF products leave on melanin-rich skin. Tune in to hear all of the personal and professional insights Shontay shares! As a woman of the sun coming from Miami, she was inspired to create Black Girl Sunscreen. Black Girl Sunscreen was designed to start the conversation around sun safety and education. It is great for everyday use and is filled with natural ingredients. We discuss why people of color should wear sunscreen. People of all colors can still get skin cancer even if they don't burn at times. Wearing sunscreen is a preventative measure. People of color are still susceptible to sun damage like hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and cancer. Shontay talks about the reasons why people of color don't wear sunscreen and the myth around wearing SPF. We learn about her entrepreneurial tips on how to start a business with little to no capital. The number one secret is one's work ethic and she also shares the exciting plans coming her way. FOLLOW BLACK GIRL SUNSCREENBlack Girl Sunscreen's WebsiteBlack Girl Sunscreen's Instagram Black Girl Sunscreen's FacebookBlack Girl Sunscreen's TwitterFOLLOW HELLO BEAUTYHello Beauty's InstagramHello Beauty's FacebookHello Beauty's YouTubeFOLLOW JOYCE PLATONJoyce Platon's Instagram

Do Black people need sunscreen? YES, we do. Shontay Lundy, Creator & Founder of Black Girl Sunscreen and Host Carmen Veal goes behind the scenes of melanated skin and protection for it. Shontay named her product BlackGirlSunscreen because there are a lot of people who still think having dark skin means that you have full sun protection. While we do have more natural protection than people with lighter skin tones, we’re still at risk for burns, cosmetic sun damage and—most importantly—skin cancer,” At BlackGirlSunscreen, their mission is to educate customers on safe skin practices and sun protection. Today, we’re talking to Shontay Lundy, founder of Black Girl Sunscreen. She was inspired to create Black Girl Sunscreen by her love of the outdoors, and dissatisfaction with sun protection products available on the market.  She often hikes practices yoga and walks her bulldog on the beach. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find a sunscreen that would protect her from the sun without cramping her style. Like many women with dark skin tones, applying sunscreen meant dealing with the white residue left behind by traditional products—and it wasn’t a good look. Armed with an MBA and a personal vendetta against this unappealing residue, the New York-‐raised businesswoman started looking for a solution. She discovered that there were natural ingredients that could boost melanin production, offer proper UV protection and be fully absorbed by the skin. So, she worked with skin care experts to create Black Girl Sunscreen. In this episode, we talk about… Making skincare a pillar in your wellness routine. Why it is important for people of color to protect their skin from the sun (because Black can crack). Ingredients to look for vs. Ingredients to avoid when choosing skincare products.
