Week 8 has come and gone and college football is delivering in every imaginable and unimaginable way. 2024 has delivered epic wins, a new number one team in the land, wild finishes and sadly, now some coaching changes.Today's podcast highlights the Y-Option Go Go Go award winners from this past weekend, a deep dive into the Oregon Ducks, Utah Utes, Colorado Buffaloes and the USC Trojans. We also welcome into the Y-Option studio, thanks to our founding partner 76, Dan Rubenstein. He co-hosts one of college football's most popular podcasts – The Solid Verbal – and personally inspired me to start a podcast almost a decade ago. As an Oregon alum, Dan is dialed in on all things Ducks and we explore what he trusts the most about this year's squad after their dominant win at Purdue on a Friday night. We also talk about how we both view the USC Trojans, who have lost 4 games by a total of 14 points. Finally, we compare some of the West Coast's top teams to pizza, as Dan is a well-known connoisseur of pizza. You won't want to miss that!Jim Thornby and I also discuss what is happening at Utah, as Andy Ludwig abruptly resigned on Sunday and offensive analyst Mike Bajakian has taken over the play calling. We have a thoughtful and blunt conversation around the move in Salt Lake City, as well as Cam Rising's future.Personally, I'd like to say thank you to so many of you who sent in personal notes after reading our Sunday Newsletter as I reflected on my late Mom, who impacted me in so many powerful ways.Much love,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production.Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Instead of poo-poo'ing the slate of games this Saturday because there's not enough ranked games of consequence, maybe you should instead be paying attention to what's happening outside the Top-25; Backyard Brawl, Apple Cup, ECU/App State, A&M/Florida, Colorado/Colorado State. We're talking about all of it and then some with our loaded cast of characters, led by Michael Felder & Stephen Hartzell.Plus we got Dan Rubenstein from the Solid Verbal comes on to talk about what's going on with his Ducks. Rivalry game on deck this weekend, and Oregon still hasn't looked like the elite team we thought they'd be.The fellas make picks - led by the Doc of Locks (TM) who is a perfect 6-0 to start the season. College football has changed so much over the last few years that the sport, for some, feels almost unrecognizable. In this episode of The Solid Verbal, we have an honest discussion about the questions that friends, family, and fans ask us out in the wild about the state of CFB in 2024 and beyond. We dive into the growing perception that too many dramatic changes to the sport, including the transfer portal, an expanding College Football Playoff, and constant realignment, especially within the Big Ten and SEC, are quickly killing off the charm that made college football unique.Be it lost rivalries, regular season games taking on different meaning, or players ability to move more freely, we talk about the changes and what they may mean both in the short- and long-term. We evaluate how optimistic or pessimistic we feel about the health of the sport and its future.Join us for an in-depth conversation about the current state of college football, its potential trajectory, and what it means for fans old and new. What do you think? Are these changes a death knell or a new beginning for college football?Join other diehard listeners and college football fans at https://www.verballers.com.Like our college football podcast? Yes, it's Monday Night Therapy on a Thursday morning. It's like the Big Ten having 18 teams. It's a name. I'll be doing this going forward - live shows whenever the schedule permits. Dan Rubenstein of the Solid Verbal Podcast joined me to talk about the Oregon Ducks. We had a good conversation about the fact that Oregon is going to be competitive on a level with Ohio State immediately as they move into the conference. They have a NIL program that is well organized and well funded. They proved that this past year by picking up a gob of players from the portal to replace a gob of players that went to the NFL. They are probably one of the top teams to be considered making it to the next college football playoff. T hey have Nebraska on their schedule at the end of the year at the Big Ten Championship game and I pointed that out to Dan and I hope that he runs with it. We discussed Oregon sports beyond football and they will be bringing a host of competition to other sports across the board. We also talked about the future of college football with the house settlement and NIL and paying players and players as employees and Dan's thoughts on that and then we also discussed what is going to happen when EA's Sports College Football video game is released. Get A T-Shirt!!!! here.

Why is USC so frustrating and are we too nitpicky? USC is 5-0 with one of the great college football players of the past 20 years, but yet the Trojans have become one of the most frustrating teams in the country. Why? Dan Rubenstein from the Solid Verbal joins AP's Ralph Russo to talk about some of the Trojans troubles, which leads to a broader conversation: Are we too nitpicky when it comes to the top teams in college football? Most of the best teams have been rolling along other than losing to other top teams. Still, there is a lot focus on the flaws. Also, Rodger Sherman, formerly of The Ringer joins the show to talk about quitting is job to travel around the country to watch college football games this season. Rodger has already covered a lot of miles and a lot of games. We'll see how he's holding up.
