Welcome to the 20th episode of the Alts Pulse, a collaboration between iCapital x Alt Goes Mainstream. In the latest episode of the Alts Pulse, we were live from iCapital Connect. iCapital Managing Director, Head of Private Asset Research & Model Portfolios, Kunal Shah, and I had a conversation about how to marry an institutional allocator's mindset with the nuances of serving wealth clients.Kunal brings an institutional allocator's mindset to the wealth channel. At iCapital, he's focused on the identification, selection, and due diligence of private equity funds offered on the Flagship Platform. Prior to iCapital, Kunal was a Principal in the private markets group at Meketa Investment Group, a leading global investment consultant serving pension funds, endowments and foundations, and family offices. In that role, Kunal was responsible for leading and managing private equity fund investments. He joined Meketa in 2006 and invested globally, covering buyouts, venture capital, private debt, natural resources, and infrastructure investments. He also developed and led Meketa's secondary funds purchase practice. Kunal has also served on various LP advisory boards. Prior to Meketa, Kunal was an analyst at The Vanguard Group. Kunal and I finally turned all those hallway conversations we had at iCapital's old office of 441 Lexington into a podcast! We had a fascinating discussion about how to evaluate alternative asset managers and what makes a great manager. We covered:How should wealth managers approach private markets? Why it's important to “always be committed” rather than try to time vintages. Are evergreen structures a “game changer” for the wealth channel and a foundational piece for model portfolios? What features does a GP need to run an evergreen fund structure? What does the centralization of the CIO function and OCIO consolidation in the wealth channel mean for GPs?Thanks, Kunal, for sharing your passion, wisdom, and expertise at the intersection of private markets and private wealth, and for a great conversation that tied together how private markets and private wealth are changing as new product structures and product innovation take shape.

In this episode of The Rainmaker Podcast, Gui Costin sits down with Michael Sidgmore, Partner and Co-Founder of Broadhaven Ventures and Founder of Alt Goes Mainstream, to unpack one of the most important structural shifts in asset management today: the convergence of private markets and private wealth.Michael begins by walking through his path from growing up outside Washington, D.C., to studying at the London School of Economics, where he first gained exposure to private markets by leading one of the world's largest student-run hedge fund and private equity conferences. That early immersion led to roles at Goldman Sachs' Principal Strategic Investments group, early-stage operating experience at Mosaic, and ultimately a formative stretch at iCapital, where he helped build distribution efforts pre-product, with a blank slate approach to the wealth channel. That experience shaped his long-term thesis: private markets are becoming mainstream, and the infrastructure supporting them must evolve accordingly. At Broadhaven Ventures, Michael invests across fintech, asset management, and market infrastructure businesses that sit between general partners (GPs) and limited partners (LPs). His focus centers on the “plumbing” of private markets, from pre-investment distribution to post-investment reporting and analytics, particularly as more capital flows in from the wealth channel. The conversation then turns to Alt Goes Mainstream (AGM), Michael's media platform designed to educate both private markets professionals and wealth managers about their growing intersection. His “north star” is clear: education drives allocation. As large asset managers increasingly prioritize private wealth distribution, they must rethink branding, marketing, and direct engagement. Meanwhile, wealth managers must better understand how private markets firms operate, structure products, and build long-term partnerships.Gui and Michael explore the evolving role of brand in asset management. Distribution, they note, is expensive and operationally complex, but firms that invest in both boots-on-the-ground sales and aerial marketing support can “own the narrative.” In an environment where attention is fragmented and algorithms are controlled by third parties, direct communication, whether through podcasts, newsletters, or owned media studios, has become a strategic advantage.Ultimately, the episode highlights a defining industry shift: distribution is no longer optional for firms seeking scale. As private markets expand into wealth, success will favor those who combine infrastructure, education, and authentic brand-building to meet in the middle.Tired of chasing outdated leads? In this episode of Retire with Style, Wade Pfau and Alex Murguia explore the world of alternative investments, with a focus on private equity and private credit. They discuss what it means to be an accredited investor, the different types of private equity investments, and the typical life cycle and structure of private equity funds—including the roles of general and limited partners. The conversation also covers key risks, such as liquidity constraints and valuation challenges, and explains how private investments can fit into a broader retirement income strategy. Wade and Alex highlight the growing accessibility of these investments for retail investors, the rise of private credit markets, and the relationship between volatility and expected returns—underscoring the importance of understanding risk when evaluating investment decisions. Listen now to learn more!   Takeaways:  Private Equity Private equity involves investing in private companies rather than publicly traded stocks. The main types of private equity are venture capital, growth equity, and buyouts. These funds typically follow a seven- to eight-year life cycle and are structured with general partners (who manage the fund) and limited partners (who provide capital). Carried interest is a key component of compensation for general partners. Liquidity is a major concern—investments are often locked up for long periods. Valuing private companies is often opaque and can mislead investors. In venture capital, most returns come from a small number of successful investments. Private equity can provide diversification benefits in a broader portfolio. Private Credit Private credit focuses on lending, often to individuals or private firms, and is distinct from private equity. These investments are gaining popularity, driven by institutional demand and the search for yield. Platforms like iCapital are increasing access for individual investors. Private credit can offer higher yields than traditional fixed income but also comes with unique risks. Investment Strategy and Risk Alternative investments are growing in popularity, especially among individual investors. Risk and return must be evaluated together—volatility alone does not guarantee higher returns. Effective portfolio construction requires understanding how different asset classes interact. Investors should avoid diversifying blindly and instead understand the specific risks of each investment.  Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Alternative Investments 04:25 Understanding Private Equity 10:27 Types of Private Equity Investments 18:52 The Private Equity Life Cycle 26:36 Structure and Function of Private Equity Funds 28:08 Risks and Considerations in Private Equity 29:15 The Illusion of Valuations 31:43 Democratization of Investment Access 32:12 Understanding Private Credit 35:33 The Growth of Private Credit Markets 41:03 Integrating Private Credit into Portfolios 45:17 Volatility and Expected Returns   Links Curious about alternative investments but not sure where to start?
