We return to the pinnacle of production values this Soul A:M Sunday as the main ingredients that have created dance music continues to define the gold standard into 1985.   Record stores became the  institutions for musical knowledge, Whilst bragging rights would sadly creep in certain individual DJs ego's would not only vie for priority status! But act like they somehow owned the sole rights to play a record ? I never understood this as it was supposed to be about the music! Always.   The disc jockeys term faded into 80s Jocks morphed into DJs around 81/83 whilst also started to transition away from mailing lists being supplied directly from the record labels, over to experiencing the unboxing ceremonies in store witnessing the couriers delivered the imports right to the countertop fond memories indeed.   Popularity around Soul music would once again influence every institution reminiscent of the decade before. Like Disco from what we wore! Very light, Very bright garments representing good times, popular music term pop! Would incorporate the sounds of Soul. Top of the pops TOTPs Top Pop in Europe would update their productions to represent the Soul scene to reflect the Clubs and then something wonderful happened, Friday 6pm is Soul Train which would later rebrand into Solid Soul a channel 4 production that became the launchpad to so many UK artists..   This depiction of 1985 is but a personal depiction of my transformation into the vastly rewarding musical timeline, But thankfully for many of you! You drive. Maybe slowly, maybe quickly. Did you jump a red light back then? You did your best but it wasn't down to you. The door slam, lights out and no sign of her watching you leave. She told you that there's no going back but you Keep Forgetting you're not in love anymore.I Keep Forgettin' is one of my favourite songs. The combination of the moody, relentless, deep funk bass line with McDonald's smooth tone made jagged with pain has always suggested something with darker possibilities. Louis Johnson from The Brothers Johnson was the bass player on this track. He may well be the most influential bassist you've never heard of. He also played on Michael Jackson's albums Off The Wall (check out the opening to Don't Stop ‘Til You Get Enough), and Thriller - Billie Jean anyone? A poet might refer to the song's repeated phrase “I keep forgetting” as anaphoric, and its duality is what gives it power; the narrator literally keeps forgetting that this relationship is done but also he is bitter about its ending. In this version I wanted to maintain my favourite parts, the vocal and the bass line, and enhance them with strings and the descending grand piano line that reflects the loss of energy the narrator feels. The later female vocal line can be understood as either the other partner feeling the same or maybe even mocking the narrator. I couldn't decide and I wonder what you, the listener, thinks.I used simple tools to create this: Virtual DJ to isolate the lines I wanted and Garage Band to reconstruct it. Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are speaking to childhood friend from youth baseball, JD Lobue Jr. as our guest today. Back in the 1970s, host Josh Mills and JD played on the Little League Dodgers team at Studio City National Little League and became fast friends in elementary school. And while he'd known about his father, JD Lobue Sn., was a television director, it really wasn't something they talked about on the baseball diamond. Cut to, oh several years later, while reading issue #59 of the ultimate rock 'n roll magazine, Ugly Things, which bills itself as Wild Sounds from Past Dimensions, that an in-depth article on the 60s Mississippi garage band The Gordian Knot caught his eye. Turns out, JD Lobue Sr. was a band member of saif Knot and after making their way west to Hollywood in the last 1960s, the band got their big break. Signing to Verve Records and recording their only album, the band befriended Nancy Sinatra, Aside from their lone LP, The Gordian Knot also became THE band to have play your swanky Hollywood party. Or in some cases, join Nancy on USO tours in Asia during the Vietnam War. All of this later lead to stints for Lobue Sr., in television after the band broke up. Starting with black dance party juggernaut, Soul Train with host and creator Don Cornelius, JD became an in demand television director. We get into all of this as well as beloved television shows like Soap, Newhart, It's A Living, Dharma & Greg and Two and a Half Men with Jr. which were just a few of his credits. We discuss life growing up in Hollywood with JD as well as a rather unique love of a sport that flew under the radar – not pun intended - in ultimate frisbee which the younger JD excelled at. The Afro is one of the most iconic hairstyles of the last century. And one of its main ingredients was a hair product – Afro Sheen. But Afro Sheen did so much more than make Black afros shine. It was the money behind the television show Soul Train, it helped fuel the civil rights movement – all because of an entrepreneur named George Johnson. For decades, Joan and George Johnson owned and ran Johnson Products Company, a Black hair care company out of Chicago. Their intimate understanding of what Black people wanted and needed – for their hair and for their lives –  helped grow the Black middle class and became an engine for Black culture and power. They helped turn the Black haircare industry into what is now a multi-billion-dollar industry. But although they helped create this industry, they no longer have a part in it. Today on the show – the story of the rise and fall of Johnson Products.
