In this episode, Swamiji narrates the moving story of Annie Besant, the renowned social reformer and president of the Theosophical Society, to illustrate the timeless law of karma. Despite her public achievements, Annie endured deep personal suffering when her infant son was afflicted with violent convulsions. Unable to reconcile this pain with the idea of a compassionate God, she turned agnostic.  Her perspective transformed when she encountered the philosophy of karma and reincarnation. She realized that life is not confined to a single birth but is a chain of many lives, where present suffering may be the result of past deeds. Swamiji explains this through vivid analogies — like grain silos where old stored grain comes out first, even if fresh grain has been added later — showing how karmic reactions may manifest long after the actions that caused them.  Swamiji connects Annie Besant's awakening to Krishna's teachings in the Bhagavad Gita. Matt Marble is an artist, author, audio producer and director of the American Museum of Paramusicology. Both creatively and through historical research, his work explores the inspired intersections of art and metaphysics and the intuitive disciplines they mutually employ. Musicology being the study of music, paramusicology is the study of paranormal music experience. Though the term has struggled to find solid footing, the paranormal generally refers us to that which is "beyond" or “outside” the normal—to experiences or phenomena which cannot be explained by scientific reasoning, objective perception, or causal agency. This points our awareness to what may be called the numinous* in human experience. Due to its abstract nature, to even convey the numinous requires active imagination and symbolic communication. As a child, Jiddu Krishnamurti was named the vessel for the World Teacher by leading figures in the Theosophical Society, namely Charles Leadbetter and Annie Besant. He came to regard Besant as a second mother but his relationship with Leadbetter was more complicated. Leadbetter wrote a serialized account of Krishnamurti's previous lives, calling him Alcyone, and helped Krishnamurti make contact with the ascended masters of theosophy. But Krishnamurti and his family were conflicted by the way he had been set up to become the religious leader of thousands and thousands of people worldwide.

Born in 1831, Helena "Madame" Blavatsky pioneered the New Age grift. The Russian aristocrat plagiarized her books while claiming to be channeling the “Masters of Ancient Wisdom” to tell a dodgy heroic back-story. Today on Sense of Soul podcast we have, William Wilson Quinn earned the M.A. from the University of Chicago Divinity School and thereafter the Ph.D. from that University in the philosophia perennis. He later earned a J.D. degree. In the 1970s, he was employed by the Theosophical Society, which he joined in 1969, where he was Editor of Quest magazine and Associate Editor of the Theosophical Publishing House. Since 1971 he has published scores of articles and four books, including The Only
Tradition and The Chela's Handbook. He is joining us to tell us about his recent book, The Higher Spiritual Path. This book is predicated on the immemorial core or "first" principles of the universal perennial philosophy, which finds expression from Lao Tzu to Ramana Maharshi in the East and from Pythagoras to René Guénon and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy in the West, The Higher Spiritual Path details how those on the higher spiritual path must address and master its requirements. This book is as practical as it is philosophical -- or theosophical -- since it is based on the specifics of “sacred science,” or spiritual science, an inextricable component of the perennial philosophy. Many of the requirements of the higher spiritual path are based on the truths of this ancient spiritual science, formulated over millennia by jivanmukti, or liberated beings, who serve as the teachers of those currently engaged in treading this hieratic path. The goals of ascending this path are the loftiest; the hierarchical order of its spiritual teachers is the holiest; and the totality of its evolutionary and compassionate purpose is the most sacred.
