My guest today is my good friend Tad Hargrave.Tad is the founder of Marketing for Hippies with a mission to restore the beauty of the marketplace. He teaches folks who have a desire to do good, but hate marketing, how to articulate their work with elegance and effectiveness.Tad has spent years learning his ancestral language of Scottish Gaelic in Nova Scotia and on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. As well, for over a decade we have both attended the Orphan Wisdom School with Stephen Jenkinson in Ontario, where we have many fond memories in the teaching hall. In recent years, he's turned towards studying ancient history, comparative mythology and Indo-European folklore. In our conversation today, Tad has turned towards the fairy tale Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) and what it might have to stay about the indigenous memory of Europe. Chances are, you've seen the Disney version of the story, though I would highly recommend you pause this episode and read the original Grimm's tale before continuing.Read the Grimm's version hereTad and I focus in on a particular moment, when after a 100 years of enchanted sleep, the prince approaches the briar hedge that encircles the castle and the Beauty lying within. We explore themes of seduction versus courtship and degradation of trust between men and women. We speak about the historical role of the Court and the tragedy of extracting too much from Nature's innate abundance. And finally, we explore how folk tales can hold practical wisdom for modern masculinity and how to sustain the mutual life between humans and the holy. The Mythic Masculine is a reader-supported publication. “It is easy for me to imagine that the next great division of the world will be between people who wish to live as creatures and people who wish to live as machines.” - Wendell Berry Tad Hargrave, one of our guests in today's episode, likes to reference this quote. And seeing a need to call people back into their humanity, finding ways to help them go about their days with more goodness and beauty, is something at the heart of both of our work. We also both love stories and myths. In fact, we talked about those very things in episode 38. Recently, he's been teaming up with Kakisimow Iskwew (aka Natalie Pepin) - a Metis Cultural Educator who helps guide Indigenous people reclaiming their culture to connect with their living teachings around art, food, language and connection to spirit. And together, they're offering deep spirals into the story ‘Briar Rose' as a way of beginning to access indigenous cultural memory of Mother Europe. I jumped at the chance to have them both gather with me here to spiral around some of the big, important questions many of us who want to live as creatures and want to do something about the ugliness which seems to be everywhere in the world today seem to be grappling with and wondering about. Questions like: What is culture? And if we're ‘white' or of European descent (particularly if we live in so-called ‘North America'), do we have ‘culture'? How are we defining indigenous - as an identity or something else? What does it mean that stories hold memory? How do we navigate the hunger, the thirst, the grief and shame which seem to be in so many of us these days as we reach for something meaningful and nourishing? And if we find some deeper roots, and they feel like their ‘ours', how do we go about honoring them in a good way? Since we recorded the conversation, I attended a three-hour online version of their spiral into Briar Rose and the story is still resonating within me and moving me in ways that aren't ready to be articulated yet; but are inviting me into deeper relationship, into protocol, with the story itself and the living culture it's carrying. May this conversation be a way of growing more culture - may it offer you some soil, or perhaps the glimpse of some roots, an idea of where to dig to find something which invites you back into deeper humanity.  And if you're feeling the call, I highly recommend their work with Briar Rose. #170 Can't Get Enough Good Cheese - Sarah Marcus, Briar Rose Creamery

Meaningful Marketplace Podcast

It's the Sarah trifecta again on this episode. Sarah Marshall and Sarah Masoni interview Sarah Marcus, founder of Briar Rose Creamery, Dundee, Oregon. This is another check-in show, as Sarah was interviewed previously on episode #68, released in March, 2021. For background, Proprietor and Cheesemaker Sarah Marcus is a Bay Area native and started making cheese in her kitchen. In 2005 she took a chance and got a job as a cheesemonger at Cowgirl Creamery in San Francisco. It was there that she fell in love with the world of cheese and developed her palette. Her cheesemaking studies took her to England, Spain, North Carolina, and Vermont. In 2008 she and her husband moved to Dundee, Oregon with the intention to build Briar Rose Creamery. So what has changed with the business and the industry since we last talked? The Creamery did have sheep milk supplied to them for a short while and made a special cheese from it. However, the owners of the farm raising the sheep sold the farm and that product line ceased to exist. But the all-cows'-milk program is working great and the company is selling more cheese than ever before. The company sells whole wheels of cheese only and consolidates the wheels in a Portland, Oregon location where trucks are loaded along with other cheese makers' products and delivered to the customers. The company is a small business, however, and subject to the ups and downs of circumstances beyond their control. For example, the local area recently suffered unusually cold weather, icing up roads and making travel difficult. It stopped milk supplies and kept employees from getting into work, so now Sarah is trying to balance increasing shifts to make up for the lost days, lost production and ultimately, lost revenue, all at the mercy of the weather. All cheeses from Briar Rose are artisan. As much art as they are food, most of the cheeses are soft and luscious. They are a golden color and the crusts take on that golden glow as well. And as the cheeses age, they get a deeper and deeper golden hue. They also get richer tasting and softer as they age, taking on a buttery experience and complexities similar to complexities found in fine wines. The company and its cheeses also have been featured in Food and Wine magazine as one of the top 50 cheese makers in the US. Sarah still does not know how that happened, as they must have been visited at either their Farm Store in Dundee or at one of the Farmers Markets they attend. So there's a message here for all foodpreneurs: Treat everyone who shops your products as best you can, because you never know if they are customers or undercover reporters. In addition to the company's Farm store, you can buy Briar Rose cheeses at local Oregon Farmers Markets and special markets and grocery stores up and down the west coast, including Alaska. Look at the amazing offerings of cheese on the company website: http://www.briarrosecreamery.com/. Follow Sarah and company on FB, https://www.facebook.com/briarrosecreamery/. What wisdom do fairy tales hold about childrearing in our modern world?   Briar Rose is the foundation for the familiar fairytale Sleeping Beauty. It addresses the complicated consequences of unconscious parenting. While it is understandable we wish to protect our children from harsh realities, too much shielding can hobble them later in life. We may hide our shadow from ourselves and our children, but it will irrupt uninvited one day, casting the family into chaos. Instinctive reactions often hold us in suspended animation, but they may also offer a way toward healing.   Prepare to discover where fairytales intersect with modern parenting, what impact avoiding shadow has on the family, whether parental fears affect child development, why understanding psychological stagnation is essential, how symbolic stories help children face challenges, and so much more…    Find the Dream We Analyze Here: https://thisjungianlife.com/briar_rose/   Try new stuff: Learn to interpret dreams: https://thisjungianlife.com/join-dream-school/   Support us on Patreon (keep us free of corporate influence): https://www.patreon.com/ThisJungianLife  Share your dream with us: https://thisjungianlife.com/share-your-dream/  Suggest a podcast topic: https://thisjungianlife.com/podcast-form-topics/   Get some TJL merch: https://www.zazzle.com/store/thisjungianlife/products  Talk to Us: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q8IG87DsnQ  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisjungianlifepodcast  Twitter: https://twitter.com/ThisJungianLife  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThisJungianLife/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thisjungianlife/

Fairy tales fascinate us and give us a sense of warmth and home-coming that comes from the mythical realm of the imagination, a necessary complement to our everyday life. We are fundamentally story-telling creatures, and there is much we can learn by reflecting on the fairy tales heard in childhood. They seem almost magical because they connect us with emotions deeply buried within that cannot find expression in outer life, because as we grow up, the world of imagination is shunned by our peers, considered as unproductive and good for nothing. Fairy tales can provide us with a sense that we are not alone in our life struggles. Humans have faced these struggles in one form or another since the beginning of time, and fairy tales represent this fundamental concern of the human condition. Psychologically, fairy tales reflect our inner landscape, and the characters can represent aspects of our own personalities. Jungian analyst Marie-Louise von Franz writes: "Fairy tales are the purest and simplest expression of collective unconscious psychic processes. Therefore, their value for the scientific investigation of the unconscious exceeds that of all other material. They represent archetypes in their simplest, barest, and most concise form." ☕ Donate a coffee ⭐ Support on Patreon ━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⌛ Timestamps (0:00) Introduction (3:43) What are Fairy Tales? Despite popular opinion, Sleeping Beauty is NOT about a helpless female waiting for the strong man to rescue her. Rather, this classical tale reaches into the reality of the Fall and the subsequent redemption of Christ. Allow Sr Rosie Drum to baptise this tale into the heart of the Gospel! Excerpt from episode:  "... from that perspective, all of us are Snow White, or Briar Rose, or Sleeping Beauty. All of us are incapable of moving beyond sin and evil that has trapped us into a coma. And those of us that are awake to the human struggle ... we know how hard it is to shake off particular sinful habits we've gotten into, or what trauma has done to us. In all of this, we can experience a helplessness, or powerlessness to be able to save ourselves. Which is right at the very crux of what Christianity is about: humanity can't save ourselves, we cannot saves ourselves, we need a saviour, a human saviour... "

You probably already know the story of Snow White—as well as Little Red Riding Hood, Briar Rose, The Frog Prince, and so many others. These tales have a rich history of oral storytelling. They've travelled through culture, adapted and readapted in each retelling and reaching as far as the popular Disney movies that our kids watch over and over. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm saw the power of this folklore and made it their life's mission to compile and preserve it. But while we tend to think of Grimms' Fairy Tales as stories for children, the themes found in Jacob and Wilhelm's book can be pretty mature…and a little dark. Columbia professor Annie Pfeifer discusses how the Grimm brothers ended up creating a whole new literary genre and their stories have been shaped and molded throughout history. Annie Pfeifer is an Assistant Professor of Germanic Languages at Columbia University. Myth Matters
Briar Rose: Rethinking the hero and the 13th fairy

Myth Matters

The hero is a central figure in our myths and stories. The hero can often provide inspiration or comfort. These stories can help us find our courage or feel a bit more powerful. The image of the hero is also a burden. Hero narratives in the dominate culture have combined with modern myths of the individual and individualism to paint a picture of the solo actor, the person who battles against enemies or the odds alone. The hero we imagine today, feeds the terrible loneliness of our time. And yet there are alternatives, and these can even be found in stories that have been framed or reshaped as hero narratives. The fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty," also known as "Briar Rose," is one example.Lots of storytellers and crafters of story, psychologists, and cultural commentators are engaged with our notion of the hero today, but the role of the hero in our stories and in our lives is something that each of us needs to consider. How does the powerful influence of the hero image and heroic rhetoric affect you? How does it shape your expectations of yourself, of other people, and of life? Support the show

Conversation starts @ 4:31 We begin our conversation exploring José's background, and with the likes of Dr. Andew Samuels and Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés as mentors, his intellectual, professional, and spiritual orientation ranges from depth psychology and meditation to attachment and spiritually integrated psychotherapy. First up is one of José's papers on spirituality and psychotherapy wherein he takes a critical look at “Jungian” approaches and identifies some of the dangers of both ungrounded psychotherapy and spirituality. We discuss the nature of therapy, ways psychotherapy can support and transform suffering, the nature of the relationship in therapy, meditation, development of a private spiritual process, religion and defining related terms such as spirituality and mysticism, the taxonomy of healers and therapists, the shadow side of spiritual work and healing professions, shamanism, fairytales, the archetype defined, inflation in healing work, differences between mythology and fairytales, we analyze the fairytale “Sleeping Beauty,” or “Briar Rose,” and the importance of inviting the unexplored psychological aspects of self. Bio: José has an M.A in Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies from the University of Essex, where Andrew Samuels was his academic supervisor, and an MSc in Systemic Psychotherapy from the Milton Erikson Institute from Monterrey. This is a version of Sleeping Beauty, also known as "Briar Rose", as told by the Brothers Grimm. I was quite surprised to learn how much this story had changed over time and couldn't help but feel that the magic of Disney had removed some of the magic from the story. At the https://tutusandfairytales.com/ (TutusAndFairyTales website), we've shared https://tutusandfairytales.com/what-aurora-thought-about-the-hopeful-prince-part-3/ (the ballet version of this story), shared patterns for various characters that you can try yourself, https://tutusandfairytales.com/very-special-valentine-craft-aurora/ (including the beautiful Briar Rose herself)! We believe there is nothing more important than family, and we know that shared experiences are one of the best ways for families to connect.  So we invite you to make the characters from this story. Happy times will come in watching your children play, and your children will love watching you make something special just for them. If you'd like to help support us, we're working on ways to do that, but for now you can buy step-by-step crafting patterns to make some of the characters from this story and more at our https://www.etsy.com/shop/TutuAndFairyTales (Etsy )shop.

In this episode we are lost in the dark woods, the enchanted forests, and we come upon the sleeping beauty. How many times have we walked through a small grove or copse of trees and been startled from a rattle just off to our right? Was it a little bird, or maybe a squirrel? But when you looked, nothing else moved. Except the shadows; shadows don't make any noise. Do they? Angela Carter tells us how “The woods enclosed. Like a net, like a cage.” She says, “There is no way through the wood any more…Once you are inside it, you must stay there until it lets you out again…” And we see in our folktales that these woods hide secrets, we lose our sense of self, and our identities are hidden. There's a different kind of beating heart deep in the woods, with a blood stream literal streams pumping life to the dark center. The lungs are high overhead, rattling a leafy canopy, and we know all around, the woods are alive.Folktales, fairytales, myths, legends, medieval romances, plays, and even today in contemporary works of literature and movies, forests and woods and even just clumps of trees in the distance manifest as representations of…something…something big, something small, something dark, something needed. Episode NotesFor more information on all of the stories and authors and themesVARIATIONS of Sleeping Beauty tales of Aarne-Thompson-Uther type 410translated and/or edited by D.
