Whether it was a Red-Letter Day or a Red Dawn or Red Cardinals Fly at Night, Stagg Bowl LI was another example of the ongoing red shift in Division III football, as North Central won its third title in its five consecutive trips to the Stagg Bowl and ensured that the Walnut and Bronze would have a red tint to it for the third year in a row.  Luke Lehnen reached the remaining records in the book. The offensive line kept his uniform clean, in this first Stagg Bowl on grass in more than 20 years. The defense eventually solved Tyler Echeverry, or at least slowed him down, even if it couldn't stop him. And for the people who want to view Sunday's game as more fodder for a head coaching change, why would you advocate for removing a coach who has won 93.3% of his games? Division III is getting harder and harder every year, and Mount Union is still there at the end more times than not.  Patrick and Greg and guest/former co-host Keith McMillan break down the game, the key decisions that were made on each side, the big plays and more, plus hand out game balls in this edition of the podcast. Over/under on how many game balls Keith hands out? 5.5. Plus, we named Lehnen, Spencer and Bethel safety Matt Jung our top award getters, and you can hear how Patrick and Greg and Keith McMillan got to those decisions in this podcast.

North Central and Mount Union are back, and we're ready to get you to kickoff of Stagg Bowl LI on Sunday night. How healthy are each of these teams? What new wrinkles might we see offensively? How many snaps will Noah Beaudrie get at quarterback for Mount Union? How many passes will Luke Lehnen end up throwing for North Central? We give you a taste of what we hear from players from both sides of the ball, whether it's Luke and the Linemen as a boy band for 2025, or Rossy Moore on his favorite way to add productive weight during the season. Plus hear from one player who says he's too old to deal with all the bumps and bruises, plus those who know their career is ending on Sunday, no matter what. Geoff Dartt and Brad Spencer each weigh in on key questions surrounding their team and Stagg Bowl LI, plus you'll hear way more on our pregame show for the game on Sunday night. Frank Rossi joins us and ... actually agrees with Logan Hansen on math? What? And it's Stagg Bowl time, so you know, there's a musical number involved, now that we're past the holiday season.

We're down to the best two teams in Division III football, both of whom are playing their best games at the right time. Mount Union is certainly firing on all cylinders now on offense after some struggles during the regular season, and you'd be hard-pressed to find more than one thing that went wrong for North Central as they absolutely demolished Susquehanna. How did they get here? What do we do with the two weeks off? Who benefits more from that extra nine days? Soccer stadium for the Stagg Bowl -- is that really OK? We talk about all the key moments of the semifinals, plus take your questions in this edition of the podcast. We talk about the depth of the North Central running backs. We discuss the two-quarterback system for Mount Union and how it worked in key spots. And more. Plus, we can't forget that Cortland coach Curt Fitzpatrick is leaving D-III, and we talk about that move plus another, possibly bigger move, with one of the top defensive players in Division III this season going into the portal and coming out as a scholarship player with the University of Wisconsin. You know, UW-Madison. The one in the Big 10. And what has been our favorite semifinal games to cover/attend/watch?

What's next? That's a great question this time of year, and we tackle that big question in a few ways in our January podcast, the first one of 2024. Cortland, now the reigning and defending national champs, says what's next is turning the page, but before they do, we sit down with Red Dragons head coach Curt Fitzpatrick to reflect on a great (the greatest?) Stagg Bowl, and the aftermath, while talking about recruiting and the transfer portal and what his program is looking for for next season. We ask what's next of Brad Spencer and North Central football. Spencer reflects on the play call that left his team out of the end zone on a two-point conversion with 80 seconds left in the game, then getting his players back in the meeting room on campus recently to talk about what happens between now and spring ball? Something else that's definitely "next" in Division III is new programs taking the field, and the Roanoke Maroons will do so in a limited way this fall, and a more formal way in 2025. Patrick and Greg sit down with new Roanoke head coach Bryan Stinespring and his defensive coordinator, Mike Giancola, as they start the daunting task of taking a football program from an idea on paper to a unit on the field, one which will play on the same field the Stagg Bowl was just played on. Plus, what's next in the Division III football playoffs? We talk about that drive for 40 teams. Patrick and Greg discuss that and more in this edition of the podcast. The D3football.com podcast is a weekly in-season podcast by Patrick Coleman and Greg Thomas, which was started in 2007. We wrap up another season, here on the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast. Perhaps not as well as the Cortland defense wrapped up Luke Lehnen on the two-point conversion attempt pictured here on the page, but we try. Was this the best Stagg Bowl ever? We've only seen about half of them in person, but our crew does its best to answer that question. Patrick Coleman and Greg Thomas are joined by Keith McMillan, Ryan Tipps, and Frank Rossi and James Baker of In the Huddle. Plus, Cortland sports information director Fran Elia, a podcast superfan, stops by to chat, and we talk with and congratulate Cortland football fans who were getting a bite to eat and a cold beverage at the famous Mac and Bob's in Salem, Virginia. Our crew hands out game balls, and talk about the unsung big plays of the game. Calling a time out? Sure. Fourth-down scramble? Definitely. Is this a changing of the guard? Great question. Will the Stagg Bowl return to Salem at some point after this? We discussed it before, but after the game, maybe things seem different.  Plus, Patrick has some news as to the order of quarterbacks the next time awards are handed out. It's No. 1 vs. No. 2, just as everyone expected, as North Central and Mount Union advance to play in Stagg Bowl XLIX in Annapolis. While this is a rematch of teams that played in the second round in 2019, then in the semifinals the next season (2021), this particular rematch turns the tables. 2022 Division III football playoff bracket It's unusual not just in that it's the first one being played outside of Alliance, Ohio. It's also now a flipping of the old paradigm. Suddenly it's North Central, playing in the Stagg Bowl for the third consecutive time, that is the program with all the Stagg Bowl experience, while Mount Union hasn't played in the game since 2018, and hasn't won it since 2017. This edition of the podcast is sponsored by the hosts of Stagg Bowl XLIX, and we look forward to seeing all of you in Annapolis, Maryland, for the Division III football championship game on Dec. 16. We sit down for a long postgame conversation with North Central's Brad Spencer after his team's win against Mary Hardin-Baylor. And we don't, or can't, with Mount Union's Geoff Dartt. We certainly try, and we try multiple times a year, and we'll talk more about that. Meanwhile, we'll hear from the Mount Union coach and players solely via the team's postgame news conference. Plus, we take reader questions, one from a reader who isn't satisfied merely to have his team win, but questions why people didn't pick North Central to win by more. (The answer is simple, and we'll give it to you on the podcast.) And another prompts a good discussion of which games on North Central's and Mount Union's schedule provide the best opportunity to gain insight on how this week's game will be played.  This is the first of three podcasts to come this week. The next will drop Friday morning and preview the Stagg Bowl, and the following one will drop on Saturday morning and give our breakdown of the game, plus our rationale as to why we chose whomever we end up choosing as our Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. The 2022 Division III playoff bracket is out, and we ask our usual questions: What did the committee get right here? What did they get wrong? Who got the toughest road to the Stagg Bowl? What are the best first round games, and what are the interesting things in this bracket that people might have missed?  But of course, we can't have any of that conversation before we talk about the drama of the closing seconds that somehow got Mount Union the OAC's automatic bid, the moment when the ball boinked off of a Baldwin Wallace defender's helmet before settling into the hands of Wayne Ruby, who ran it into the end zone for the unlikeliest of game winners. Stick around to the end of the podcast to find out what happened in the postgame dogpile, and then what was supposed to happen at the end of the game ... but did not. This edition of the podcast is sponsored by the hosts of Stagg Bowl XLIX, and we look forward to seeing all of you in Annapolis, Maryland, for the Division III football championship game on Dec. 16. Meanwhile, we hear from a team making it to the playoffs for the first time -- no, not the surprise team. Or at least, not that surprise team. Ithaca coach Michael Toerper joins us for a Fast 5 and we also hear from Cortland coach Curt Fitzpatrick about what his team can take away from this loss as they regroup for the playoffs. Plus, questions about King's and Plymouth State, and apparently the WIAC is somehow overrated? Who would fare better against Delaware Valley, assuming the Aggies make it to the second round? And still six regions of wrapup, from fun in the 1 to the rest of the regions. Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. Wittenberg played in the Stagg Bowl four times in the 1970s, winning two of them. One of those wins was against Ithaca, which played in four of the first eight Stagg Bowls and has played in seven overall, winning three of them. While this is not your father's Wittenberg or Ithaca, these programs haven't exactly gone away, either, and are still relevant. At least one is in the playoff hunt every year, it would seem. And each this year has a new head coach, which is why we tabbed Ithaca's Michael Toerper and Wittenberg's Jim Collins to join us on Podcast 305. This continues the series, now blatantly intentional, of offseason conversations with new coaches at Division III contenders, one started in Podcast 302 with North Central's Brad Spencer. We asked the listeners for suggestions as to which coach or coaches we should talk to next, and we also opened up the floor for listener questions. Pat and Greg tackle the following: What team is likely to be a surprise playoff team in 2022? How has the pandemic changed Division III football? What's more beneficial to a struggling program, playing a nine-game schedule or having a 10th against a juggernaut? Some heavy questions, plus Greg finds out what's on Pat's Division III football bucket list. Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. Oh, heck yeah -- we have one of those nice new Stagg Bowl venues with a nice new stadium smell. And no, we were never going to get 23,000 people to attend this game, but having it played in a big, professional stadium, next to the Pro Football Hall of Fame ... that's pretty special. The teams, North Central and Mary Hardin-Baylor, are veterans of the Stagg Bowl and are loose and ready to go. We'll hear a little of that from each coach. We'll also talk to Mary Hardin-Baylor quarterback Kyle King and linebackers Micah Hackett and Jacob Mueller, plus Andrew Kamienski and Jake Beesley from North Central. How do you prepare to defend Brandon Jordan? What do the UMHB players think of North Central running back Ethan Greenfield? How often does Kyle King audible out of a play in any given game? Plus, Greg Thomas puts Pat Coleman and guest host Frank Rossi on the spot with a few over-unders, such as, how many passes will Jordan catch? How many carries will Greenfield get? Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. We get a new, never-before-seen matchup in the Stagg Bowl, and that's something to be excited about. In the latest edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast, Pat and Greg break down each of the semifinals, and North Central coach Jeff Thorne and Mary Hardin-Baylor coach Pete Fredenburg join us to do the same.  For North Central, the key performances came all over the field: from an offensive line missing two starters, from a freshman kicker called on to do the unlikely on a rainy and windy day, and of course from the dare-we-say future All-American running back and his quarterback, and the entire defense. We'll talk about each of those performances. For Mary Hardin-Baylor, of course, the biggest performance on offense was from the biggest man on the offense, Brandon Jordan. Plus the defense did more than enough to keep Alex Peete in check, and there are very few questions for UMHB. But we ask those questions anyway!  Plus, we talk about who the elite teams are in Division III football right now, and where does Mount Union rank among them after we've had two consecutive Stagg Bowls without the Purple Raiders for the first time since the early 1990s. And what the heck was up with the replay official in Whitewater on Saturday? Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. In other Division III sports, we often get to see schools experience the national championship event for the first time, and often get to see them come away a winner. In football, however, we haven't had too much of that. Mount Union, UW-Whitewater and Mary Hardin-Baylor have combined to win the previous 14 Stagg Bowls.  But on Friday night in Shenandoah, Texas, we got something new, something decidedly less purple, as North Central brought a new program to the Stagg Bowl, with new back stories and histories. And the Cardinals came away emphatically as champions, defeating UW-Whitewater 41-14.  In this podcast, Pat, Keith, Frank Rossi and Greg Thomas wrap up the game and wrap up the season. You can hear the debate and how we arrived at giving our three year-end awards to members of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Plus, you'll hear the emotion in a proud dad's voice, a son who wanted to get his dad to hold the trophy, and a most outstanding player who tried to give his trophy away. Plus, who should be No. 2? UW-Whitewater? Mount Union? Wheaton? Pat and Keith and Frank and Greg discuss that and more in Podcast 270. It's the final podcast of 2019. Best of Redzone Philosophy, Strategy, and Tactics On today’s episode we hear philosophy strategy and tactics from some of the best at putting the ball in the end zone once they reach the 20 yard line. We focus on an area of the field where you have to come away with points. Steve Fairchild was a 5 year NFL Offensive Coordinator servicing the Buffalo Bills, St Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers. He spent 18 years in the collegiate game spending 4 years as a Head Coach at Colorado State. Steve Fairchild: Identifying and understanding the red zone. Thoughts on howto approach the high red zone to ensure points John Bond, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Northern Iowa. In 2017, the Panthers led the FCS in red zone offense. Coach Bond also wrote a book, “Developing a Championship Quarterback.” Over his 33 year career Bond made stops at SW Missouri, Utep, Delta State Illinois Stat Army, Norther Illinois, Georgia Tech, Georgia State UMass, and Tennessee Martin. @CoachJohnBond John Bond: 3 Keys to excelling in the Red zone: Running the ball, running nakeds and 3 step drops. How to breakup red zone practice time during the wee. Brad Spencer is the offensive coordinator at North Central College who plays for the Division 3 National Championship tonight in the Stagg Bowl. North Central Has become an offensive power house at the Division III level this. Spencer's offense was ranked No. 1 in third down and red zone efficiency, top three in completion percentage and top 10 in total offense and scoring. Brad Spencer: Figuring out where the defense changes as you approach the red zone and goal line. Finding the set of plays your players like to run and settling on plays you’re comfortable with. Additionally, how much of your offense stays the same from outside of the redzone. Joe Osovet joined the Tennessee coaching staff in 2018 following a successful tenure as one of the top head coaches in the junior college ranks. Osovet has coached 11 NFL players and developed 47 Division I players as a JUCO head coach. Joe Osovet: How coach finds success in the red zone by staying consistent but at the same time being variable. The importance of disguising plays by using different formations. Also, finding out how teams adjust to different formations within the red zone and attacking their weakness. Additionally, using different personnel to mess with opposing coordinators in the red zone. Fairchild: The importance of sticking to the run game in the red zone and how to handle the extra defender in the box. Fairchild: Specific route concepts that coach likes to use in the red zone. We were fortunate to run down former Minnesota Vikings and three time Rose Bowl champion Jim Hueber. Ask anyone who has played for, coached with or had to line up across from one of his offensive lines and you will hear a common theme…”toughness”. Yes coach Hueber has had the fortune to coach a lot of good football players over his forty some years but as you will hear in this podcast, the toughness aspect and the ability to go get that one yard in a goal line situation is something that is sold first and foremost by the offensive line coach. Jim Hueber: How to use toughness at the goaline and which plays coach typically uses down at the goal line. Also, how current spread teams can adjust to heavy situations where they have to run. Additionally, benefits of going under center as opposed to in the gun.

There were picks early in the game in Allentown, and late in the game in Whitewater, as North Central and UW-Whitewater booked their tickets to Shenandoah by winning their national semifinals and advancing to Stagg Bowl XLVII. We'll still have purple in the Stagg Bowl. And no, we won't get the shootout-style matchup of the two top quarterbacks in Division III, but we got to see Max Meylor have a breakout game on ESPN3 on Saturday afternoon. Was the running a surprise to him? Yes and no -- he'll tell you more in this podcast. How did UW-Whitewater get to St. John's quarterback Jackson Erdmann? The same way they do every time. Warhawks coach Kevin Bullis describes how the defensive philosophy of pressuring the quarterback has changed since he took over as head coach. (Hint: It hasn't.) And Wojciech Gasienica talks about his game-winning field goal, and we tell you how to pronounce his name. North Central was asked if they have ever come up against anyone that can match their team speed. (Yes -- there's a list.) How hard it is to defend that speed? Yeah ... it's hard. The season has started fast and for some teams they still haven't lost. Not unexpected for some, maybe completely unexpected for others. And there was a big battle between #1 and #2 in Division III men's basketball on tap! On Thursday's edition of Hoopsville, Dave was back in studio and talked to some of the teams who find themselves without a loss, but probably still with plenty of questions that remain unanswered. Many of the teams are nationally ranked, but one of the teams finds itself undefeated and receiving narry a point in any of the Division III polls. Also on Thursday's edition, Dave will talked LIVE with both Amherst and Babson head coaches after not only a rate No. 1 vs. No. 2 regular season battle, but another thrilling double-overtime game between the two. Both coaches took the time to chat after the game. Guests included (in order): - Bob Amsberry, No. 8 Wartburg women's coach - Amy Reed, Rochester Tech women's coach - Landry Kosmalski, No. 22 Swarthmore men's coach - Jon VanderWal, No. 3 Marietta men's coach - Dave Hixon, No. 1 Amherst - Stephen Brennan, No. 2 Babson men's coach This is most likley the last Thursday edition of Hoopsville before the holiday break (due to D3football.com coverage of Gagliardi Trophy and Stagg Bowl next week and proximity of Christmas the following week). The Thursday edition of the show will return January 5, 2017 - but stay tuned if we change our minds in two weeks.
