This is a re-release of a conversation I had with Stephanie Roberts back in 2023. Since that time, she's gained two more years of recovery and has been promoted to Program Manager of our Oklahoma City Street Outreach and Rapid Response team. Stephanie is a native Oklahoman who, in childhood, experienced a sexual trauma that went unaddressed, resulting in a crescendo-like progression of events that ultimately culminated in the loss of her children, her home, her dignity. Humanity stepped in, knowing that everyone has value and possibility, and took a chance on her. And now she is the one reminding others in the shoes she once wore, that they, too, have value and possibility. This was such a good conversation, worthy of a re-release in our 2025 Season 1 batch of MHAOK staff success stories. It's important to note that this conversation touches on sexual trauma and loss. While it's critical dialogue to have, we understand that it could be difficult for some listeners. Daniella Mestyanek Young is an American author and speaker born into the religious cult The Children of God. Daniella served as an Intelligence Officer in the US Army for over six years, making the rank of Captain, and became one of the first women in US Army history to conduct deliberate ground combat operations when she volunteered to serve on a Female Engagement Team. She is a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Medal. Daniella lives with her husband and daughter in Maryland and is a candidate for a Master's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Harvard Extension School. Daniella's first book, UNCULTURED: A Memoir of Cults, War, and Belonging, is being published by St. Martin's Press on September 20th, 2022. Daniella shares with Rachel some insights behind the stories in her book Uncultured, more than a memoir about an exceptional upbringing, but about a woman who, no matter the lack of tools given to her, is determined to overcome. Throughout her story, Daniella draws parallels between her life as a child in the Children of God commune and her time as an adult in the U.S. military. Pointing out the stunning similarities in rape culture in both organizations. She goes on to explain the dangerous deification of the U.S. Army, and the cult-like devotion and martyrdom expected of its soldiers Before you Go: Rachel reflects on her experiences with Children of God survivors over the years, explaining the difficulties of "learning life as a second language" for those who have left the high control groups they were born into. Watch our Youtube episode! Hiring a team can cause a lot of growing pains for small independent advisors. However, a capable team and work culture can give us more time to achieve balance in our lives. As the entrepreneurs, founders, and CEOs of our financial advising companies, letting go of controlling every aspect of our business can be difficult. But your time is valuable. You can hire someone to schedule your appointments and do admin work. By hiring you are giving yourself the time and opportunity to grow your business and find personal balance. To discuss the importance of the hiring process and why you should think about outsourcing the process we've invited Stephanie Roberts on the show. She is the founder of Humans Being Resources, a hiring firm dedicated to helping advisors find strong candidates for any position in their firm. Whether you are hiring your first or the fifteenth employee the hiring process can cost a lot of time, money, and stress. That is why Stephanie started this business with advisors in mind. Advisors should be able to focus on client relationships and services, not recruiting and hiring. Today we are going to be discussing the struggles she's seen many advisors go through. We highlight the importance of company culture and prioritizing work-life balance throughout your company. Once you have a team, you get back a lot of time for yourself. Humans Being Resources has a streamlined process that saves you money and stress. You can't achieve a balanced life by working in every position in your firm. When it comes to business, Shawna Smits and Stephanie Roberts believe, "no doesn’t mean no," and that’s what has made them successful entrepreneurs. On today’s episode, the business partners share the evolution of their achievement in hopes that it encourages other entrepreneurs to pave their own path. When would you want to know, there’s always a way to succeed? Tip #1: No Means There is Another Way: You can't be courageous unless you're fearful. You can have fear, but it's deciding to do it anyway that defines courage. Stephanie credits Shawna’s entrepreneurial spirit as the propellant of their success. “No to me means there's just another way. No does not mean no,” explained Shawna. Tip #2: Set Bold Intentions: When Stephanie and Shawna wanted to get a small business loan for their first graphic design company, they had to create a formal business plan, with profit and loss projections and a list of potential clients. “We had no idea how we were going to do it, we pulled them out of thin air but we picked the big, major companies that a bank could recognize. If we picked fifteen, we did business with fourteen of those companies.” Little did they realize, starting with bold intentions set a precedent from the very beginning. Tip #3: Dress for Success Shawna believes that 90% of landing new clients is showing up and looking good. “Shawna made me buy a suit,” Stephanie admitted, “We would deliver boxes of printed t-shirts and I remember we'd be in the elevator with our boxes in our suits; it was awesome.” Tip #4: Trust Your Instincts: Learning about what you're doing and being informed is great but Stephanie reminds aspiring entrepreneurs that sometimes you need to trust your instincts. “I think we didn't know what we were getting ourselves into [with Cosmopolitan Kids] which served us well because if we knew what it would take, we wouldn't have done it.” It’s important to be informed and make good decisions but also take chances, don’t overthink everything. Tip #5: Do Something You Love: At the root of their companies, both Stephanie and Shawna played where they worked. “I think you should also do something you love,” explained Shawna. One of their biggest strengths was the fact that they built their business from a parent standpoint. Thinking like a customer and loving their work helped them overcome all adversity.
