LA Phil Principal Pianist/Keyboardist talks about her unique experience of recording the piano solos for Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, including the original score by John Williams Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto John Williams has written solo parts spotlighting specific instrumentalists both in his film scores and works for the concert hall. While it's not rare to see such superstar musicians as Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma or Anne-Sophie Mutter as the featured soloist and the dedicatee of a piece, Williams has often used the talents of some of the best musicians of the Los Angeles area, including distinguished members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It's the case of Joanne Pearce Martin, the Principal Keyboardist and Pianist of the LA Phil, who recently had the honour to be the featured piano soloist on the soundtrack for Steven Spielberg's acclaimed The Fabelmans, performing both the piano solos from the classical repertoire as heard in the film and John Williams' Academy Award-nominated original score. In this conversation, Joanne talks about her experience of playing for John Williams and Steven Spielberg on The Fabelmans, sharing stories and insights about her unique collaboration with both the director and the composer during the creation of the film's soundtrack. She also talks about her experience playing under John Williams at the Hollywood Bowl and at the Disney Hall with the LA Phil many times over the years and also as rehearsal pianist, giving her own perspective on the Maestro's musicianship as a composer and conductor. Currently out on Blu-ray is not one, but two different movies that hit theaters last year and deal with, in no small part, movies. Yes, now available are Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans" and Sam Mendes' "Empire of Light." While both movies are beautiful to look at, only one touches the soul. Which goes right and which goes wrong? Let's discuss.
Film critics Rahul Desai and Uday Bhatia discuss Steven Spielberg's THE FABELMANS, and Raj & DK's new series, FARZI.
EW sr. writers Joey Nolfi and Maureen Lee Lenker join Awardist host Gerrad Hall to discuss Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans and his chances of winning the Best Director Oscar, who they think should've been in the category but was shut out, and nominated actors Michelle Williams and Judd Hirsch, who both speak with The Awardist about their memorable performances. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast features more Oscar nominees than... well, not the Oscars themselves, that would be ridiculous. But certainly more Oscan nominees than you could shake a golden stick at. First, Chris Hewitt has a chat with Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, directors of Best Animated Feature frontrunner, Pinocchio (not that one). Then, Alex Godfrey gets deep with Best Actress nominee, Michelle Williams, as she tells him about how she played Steven Spielberg's mum for Steven Spielberg in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans. And then Dan Jolin Zooms in for a chat with The Whale director Darren Aronofsky, and his star, possible Best Actor favourite Brendan Fraser. Plus! Either side of those chats, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to discuss Paul Mescal's chances of being the new Bond (and Chris comes up with a plan that should see everyone happy), have a crack at chatting about the week's movie news (including a deep dive into the Oscar nominations), and review The Fabelmans, Plane, Shotgun Wedding, and Unwelcome. Enjoy.

OK spoiler alert! Today I'm telling the whole story of how I came to work with a Hollywood Costumer named Danielle to help outfit the actors in Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans. I took my family to see the movie on Thanksgiving Day. I had really been hesitant to do a video about my involvement until I saw the final cut. You never know how things are going to turn out and I wasn't sure if they would have made changes since my involvement was more than a year ago. But the uniforms were awesome, the portrayal of Sammy Fabelman's time in Scouts was awesome (can you tell I am a child of the 80s?) and I loved the movie. The overall arc of the story line is heavily focused on the family dynamics. But the the parts in the beginning of the movie with his patrol and troop were just plain fun to watch. Of course in this episode I'll have a giveaway and an unboxing! Oh and if you've read this far down I have an Easter Egg surprise for you. Something that I just found this morning when I was doing my homework for this episode. I was so shocked when I found this that I immediately called my wife and had one of those moments on the phone where she first asked "is everything ok?". Watch to find out!

Ramses was tapped just weeks after Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy stepped down as festival president, after a four-year tenure in which he helped to revamp the long-running event. Hefzy was particularly instrumental in expanding the fest's international reach, bolstering ties with counterparts overseas, and launching an industry component that has quickly established itself as one of the leading platforms for filmmakers from the region. The festival's 44th edition, which runs until Nov. 22, unspools amid a crowded fall calendar of Arab fests, running parallel to Marrakech (Nov. 11 – 19) and on the eve of Saudi Arabia's splashy Red Sea Film Festival, which hosts its second edition in Jeddah from Dec. 1 – 10. Meanwhile, Egypt's El Gouna Film Festival, which for five years had occupied a late-October slot and brought a touch of star power to the Red Sea resort town, was put on pause this year. Its future is uncertain. Speaking to Variety on the eve of opening night, Ramses — who was the artistic director in El Gouna from 2017-2021 — described a spirit of healthy competition among the region's festivals, who he sees less as rivals than collaborators working toward a common goal of bolstering Arab cinema. “We're talking on a weekly basis about where we are, how we can support each other,” he said. “It's not about taking the lead. You can't build the region on one strong festival. We complement each other.” In his first year in Cairo, Ramses has nevertheless been keen to secure the kind of lineup that helped land El Gouna on the map. Along with the regional premiere of “The Fabelmans,” he's helped attract a strong slate of titles already making waves on the international festival circuit. Among the films celebrating regional premieres in Cairo are Carla Simón's Berlin Golden Bear Winner “Alcarràs”; Alice Diop's Venice Grand Jury Prize and Lion of the Future award winner “Saint Omer”; Alejandro Loayza Grisi's Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner “Utama”; Sally El Hosaini's Toronto opening film “The Swimmers”; and a host of award winners from this year's Cannes Film Festival, including Lukas Dhont's Grand Prix winner “Close,” Jerzy Skolimowski's Jury Prize-winning “EO” and Riley Keough and Gina Gammell Camera d'Or winner “War Pony.” At the same time, the longest continually running showcase of Arab cinema will look to shine a spotlight on the region's emerging and established talents. In the international competition, Egyptian director Ahmad Abdalla's “19B,” which celebrates its world premiere, will screen among 14 titles vying for the festival's Golden Pyramid, including Lebanese director Ali Cherri's Cannes Directors' Fortnight player “The Dam.” Ahmad Abdalla's “19B” has its world premiere in the festival's international competition.
