On this Episode of Gritty Bowmen we hang out with my uncle Kevin Call--joint owner of High Point Outfitters in Arizona. Kevin runs highpoint with his son Blake and their longtime friend John Adams. Kevin knows Arizona--he’s been hunting Arizona since the 70’s.  I grew up watching my uncle Kevin hunt all over the West killing monster mule deer, elk, antelope and more. I grew up seeing photos of his hunts and his hunting stories in magazines and hearing hunting stories at family reunions. I can still remember the first time I walked into his giant garage--there were deer and elk antlers from floor to ceiling of all the animals he’s taken. To me, those antlers represent a mountain of time spent in the outdoors and a vast amount of collected experiences. In this podcast Uncle Kevin shares his thoughts on hunting AZ. My Dad and Kevin share some special memories of hunting Arizona in areas like the Kaibab and the Arizona Strip when they were younger. We talk about guiding and being an outfitter and why he does it.  And we learn about Kevin’s favorite game camera--after all, High Point Outfitters runs about 200 game cameras all year. Coincidentally, I bought a couple of the cameras recommended after recording this podcast and I’m quite pleased with their performance. If you’re listening to this podcast you might want to take a moment to watch the beginning to see some pictures of some amazing Arizona elk, deer and antelope. SHOW NOTES:  Friends, I highly recommend that you watch this podcast, if you can, as I have video and photo images from the hunt overlaying much of the conversation. As for this hunt, as Aron Snyder says, I’m not gonna church it up. We made some dumb mistakes on this hunt. And I guess that’s part of why I love hunting. There are no guarantees--just like in life. We all work hard to perfect our skills--our shooting, our calling, our fieldcraft, our fitness... but at the end of the day things can and do go wrong during a hunt as they do in life and you’ve got to improvise. Sometimes it’s not skill that you need, it’s grit. It’s determination. And Anthony Spencer has that. He’s as gritty as they come.  I wish I could say that Anthony’s bull felt no pain and went down easy. But it didn’t work out that way. Taking the life of another sentient being is not something we take lightly. Yet, it’s an everyday part of the natural world we live in. Animals hunt to eat and eat to live--including humans. And this endeavour results in pain and death to animals everyday. An ethical and compassionate hunter will always do his best to make the death as swift and painless as possible. But sometimes, despite our best efforts we fail in this. There are no guarantees--no gimmees in hunting--nor in life. Things will and do go wrong if you hunt long enough. I’m okay with that. Because that’s how life is. I didn’t want my wife to have cancer, but it happened. Sometimes, we don’t get to choose how it goes. The Hunting TV industry likes to pretend that mistakes don’t happen and animals don’t suffer. But that’s not reality. The Gritty Bowmen isn’t on a TV network, we don’t have anybody telling us what we can and cannot show. So what you get is the gritty truth. And I’m sorry to those who imagine that bliss is normal. Because as Jenkin Lloyd Jones said, “you’re going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that you’ve been robbed. The fact is that most putts don’t drop. most beef is tough, most children grow up to just be people… most jobs are more dull than otherwise. Life is like an old time rail journey… delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.”    In this episode you'll find out what makes the Gritty Bowmen so gritty. The mental toughness and determination and sacrifice it takes to get the job done. "Those things are good for ya. It's always good to challenge yourself a little bit and not quit." - Anthony Spencer  "I know you could never tell by looking at me... but I'm not an endurance athlete. So it's not that I was in such phenomenal  endurance condition that I could chase him down. What it took was a mind set. Ya know, I am stubborn. That was the other thing I learned this week. I'm really not that great of an elk hunter. I can screw up a lot of things really quickly.  But I am stubborn and I am persistent and I had made up my mind I wasn't going to quit running that bull. If I had given up on him that wouldn't have happened." - Anthony Spencer

These two guys are the engine that run the Full Draw Film Tour. Now... some of you may be asking, “what is the Full Draw Film Tour?” To quote the Gritty Scotsman, “If you donn’a know what the tour is, you need to climb out from under the rock you been livin’ under and listen to this podcast.”    In this podcast you’ll learn all about the Full Draw Film Tour. You’ll learn about Jon and Kody’s vision behind it. As Kody said: “Our goal with the FDFT is to capture them, move them, and change them.” You’ll hear Kody and Jon’s opinion on the 3 ingredients that make a good film based on their combined years of experience running the tour and literally observing nearly 100 different audiences--learning what they like, what captures them, what moves them and what changes them.   I first met Kody at the FDF School. Where I met South Cox, Kristy Titus, Born and Raised Outdoors, Joe Sanchez, Grady Rawls, Walt Ramage and more. We were put into teams of 3 and I was grouped with Kristy Titus and Josh Keller who were a TON of fun. And these people inspired me. And for this reason and many more, I have a special affection for this tour and these guys. It’s undeniable that the Full Draw Film Tour has had a huge impact on my life. So it was pleasure to sit and talk to Jon and Kody about the tour. To hear about the money they’ve raised for charities like hunt of a lifetime and Wishes for Warriors. He has more than 50 podcast episodes with tremendous guests on a broad range of topics all related to western big game hunting and fishing.    Jay lives in Scottsdale, Arizona with his wife Jeanne. Jay has been a professional hunting and fishing guide in the state of Arizona for 16 years. He spends more than 120 days in the field guiding and hunting across the United States. And Jay is currently a Field Editor for Western Hunter Magazine and hunting editor for Elk Hunter Magazine. As well as being a hunter, Jay’s other passion is fly fishing.    In today’s podcast you’ll hear us discuss the stigma that much of the DIY hunting community harbors toward hunting guides and the use of hunting guide services. Jay and I discuss the use of sponsorships--or, the paid promotion of products--We talk about their value and their sometimes negative impact on the hunting industry. And although we both promote health and fitness, Jay brings up a valid concern which I agree with--that some hunters place so much emphasis on fitness that they fail to learn fieldcraft, how to sit still for hours, how to read sign and track game, and other basic and not-so-basic hunting and fishing skills.   It was a pleasure meeting Jay Scott. I applaud his podcast and I look forward to hearing more great content from Jay and his stellar guests. I am Brian Call and I am your host. And without further ado, here is today’s podcast.

This week on Gritty Bowmen we travel to Tamarack Idaho for the annual NW Mountain Challenge Archery Shoot and we talk to Corey Jacobsen, 7-time world champion elk caller, elk killing machine, and Owner of Extreme Elk Magazine, and most importantly, Husband and father to 3 awesome kids, Isaac, Jessi, and Samuel. Young Isaac is quite the elk caller—here he is giving my hunting partners, Ben and Anthony a lesson on how to bugle with attitude.  The NW Mt. Challenge was a total blast. After Corey graciously spent the late-afternoon shooting this podcast with us, we had the pleasure of spending the evening shooting our bows on the night course with he and his family. We met is lovely wife Jennifer, who is super cool for many reasons, not least of which because she’s an archer and shoots a cool bow. The night shoot at Tamarack was super cool and was fun for the whole family. Donnie Drake, Corey’s longtime friend and hunting partner shot the night course with us and we were able to get a glimpse of the brotherhood these men share.  In today’s podcast you’ll hear about what makes a good hunting partner. Corey will tell you how long he’s hunted with his hunting partners and why. And you’ll learn about things such as Corey’s dream situation for killing big bulls.  If you missed the NW Mt. “You think 100 sit-ups is a bunch? Hike 4 miles with that gorilla hanging off you. Your abs are so burnt!”   This week on Gritty Bowmen, shockingly! Aron Snyder and I talk about backpacks. Aron gives his tips on how to properly wear and fit a backpack. Aron tells me that “the chest strap is not a come-along choker strap” and shares other such nuggets of information. And as usual, Aron does not keep his opinions to himself and neither do I. So, we tried not to offend anyone but we probably failed. As Aron said, “For the most part you’re going to lose something with heavy weight hauling with an ultra-light pack.”   The audio on my microphone was a bit off and there are a couple of glitchy spots but they don’t last too long—Aron’s audio comes across loud and clear.  Featured in this Podcast: https://youtu.be/3gomjnc26ig  - Duplex Frame Adjustment http://www.rokslide.com/forums/showthread.php?9413-Kifaru-pack-No-No-s-and-tips-on-fit Kifaru Pack No No’s and tips on fit. This week on Gritty Bowmen we meet again with Aron Snyder of Kifaru International to talk about why your pack is so freakin’ heavy.  At the end of this podcast you will know what Aron does to lighten his backpack.  As Aron explains in this podcast, most guys pack for Siberia but go to Africa.  Aron will also teach you how to modify your gear to make it lighter without sacrificing function. But you’ve got to be carful doing this. As Aron said, “Brian, “When you start hacking parts off your pack and you think you ‘might’ be wrong--you’re probably wrong. One of my army instructors told me that. But if that thing has been in your pack or part of your pack for 3 years and you’ve never used it... hack that thing off like Hannibal Lecter!”  This podcast is chalk full of what I call Aron Snyderisms.  Like, “ounces make pounds and pounds make pain.” And “usually it’s the bad-ass person who goes too ultralight and turns out to be the dumb-ass person.”  The podcast has some glitchy spots but it’s not too bad and the content is well-worth the time. In the last 30 minutes of theis podcast Aron and I go off on a tangent and talk about sponsorships in the hunting and outdoor industry--we talk about what we don’t like about sponsorships and why.  And Aron tells me what his favorite clothing choices are right now, right down to the brand name.  Which, will probably  make some people in the hunting industry mad at him.  Sorry Aron.  Featured in this Podcast: How to shed useless, dead weight-- pack lighter without sacrificing your comfort. 5 WAYS TO LIGHTEN YOUR PACK: Assess the situation. Don’t pack for Siberia when you’re going to Africa. Cutting and modifying your gear--shed useless weight. Splitting gear with your hunting buddies. Buy the lightest weight gear that you can afford that fits your style of hunting. Lose the weight off your ass.  When you’re pushing the envelope to save weight you can’t have our cake and eat it too. “My wife wants a gun that shoots down trees, doesn’t make noise and doesn’t kick -- and they just don’t have that...”  “It’s kind of like building a building... you can have quality, quantity, and cost-efficiency and you can have any two of those you want but you can’t have all 3.  It’s the same with paying the piper for lightweight.”  “First Lite makes a jacket we call the “unpronounceable”... the oounncompadre.”  Question: “What is a woobie and when do you use it?” Answer: “Oh I know. And what’s horrible is Kifaru also makes a Doobie, which is probably because Patrick was a hippie.”

That’s it for EPISODE 4 of the Gritty Bowmen podcast. Part 2 of Are you a Stalker? Stalking Monster Mule Deer w/South Cox & Stalker Stickbows.   I got a lot of information out of these two podcasts with South on how to kill a monster mule deer. In summary, South explained the need to have a positive attitude and Mental Toughness. Another key to his success is that South gets remote with a focus on wilderness areas.  And South looks for hunting grounds with what he calls “Micro Topography” . South likes to stalk from above. This helps him with wind. Because deer bedded on hillsides tend to face downhill and therefore don’t see you coming. South also finds it easier to sneak in on the animal from above when you need to stay low or crawl. Unlike some hunters, South likes to wait until the animal beds down before he stalks his deer. South recommends buying the best glass you can afford. South stressed the importance of mounting your binoculars to a tripod. And when glassing, don’t just glass from the main ridgeline. Walk out on the finger-ridges that branch off the main ridge line and glass to the end of the finger ridge. South likes lightweight boots that have soft soles—he finds them quieter and they help him when hopping through a boulder field. He mentioned Solomon boots, the Lowa Zephyr, Lowa Renegade, and one of his favorites, the Ahnu Elk Ridge Mid. At 70 to 100 yards from his quarry, South sheds his boots and dons a thick pair of socks to silently close the distance. But he recommends marking the location of your boots somehow so you don’t lose your boots. And South likes Smoke in a Bottle brand wind checker. South carries 3 things in his front right pocket. Chapstick, lens cloth, and  Smoke in a bottle.   www. stalkerstickbows.com http://www.ahnu.com http://moccasinjoedist.com/store/unscented-smoke/43-smoke-in-a-bottle.html http://www.lowaboots.com I hope you enjoyed this podcast as much as I did. Please take a moment to leave us a rating or a review on iTunes and or our Youtube channel.
