It's no secret The Thing (1982) is one of our favorite films to reference. It's a cinematic masterpiece in all phases, and stands as John Carpenter's finest work. Fans of The Thing have enjoyed numerous special edition versions, notably Arrow Films and Shout! Factory. The makers behind CreatorVC aim to best that. Today we are joined by Ian Nathan who directed the wildly entertaining Aliens Expanded. On this episode we dive deep into the classic Troma title SURF NAZIS MUST DIE. One of the most legendary exploitation films of all time we go left foot first (Because goofy footing cannot do!) into a movie often looked over because of its title, the company that released it, and that fact that it is PURE exploitation. This film is a gem and we hope you enjoy this UNCUT and UNCENSORED Summer School episode. The following episode is totally uncut and, oh I would say, 97% as close to as what it sounded like the moment we recorded. There's a little something for everyone this week on the Blu-ray scene. Especially if you like it weird. Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress again to talk about Criterion's release of one of the landmarks of international cinema. Barbara Hershey takes on apartheid and Rory Calhoun explores as Marco Polo. Peter chimes in on the Black Panther sequel while there are also new 4K releases of an Oscar-winning musical and a charming zombie romcom. Then it gets weirder with a campy sequel getting its own 4K release, Bill Paxton fighting the homeless and a bizarre internet thriller featuring Peter's favorite actress and one of Erik's favorite musicians. Last but certainly not least and weird in the best ways, another tribute to arguably the best performance of Bruce Campbell's career. Released in the summer of 1991, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves was a monster success that grossed over $165 million at the US box office and more than $390 million globally - a number which made it one of the biggest hits of the year. The success of the film, along with the massive Bryan Adams hit, (Everything I Do) I Do It for You means that it still resonates today.  The classic Kevin Reyndolds directed adventure gives Kevin Costner's Robin Hood plenty of swash and buckle alongside Morgan Freeman's Merry Man, while a villainous Alan Rickman chews the scenery as the Sheriff of Nottingham.    Hot on the heels of a fantastic new release by the aptly named Arrow Films, Pen Densham and John Watson, the writers of Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves join the Movies In Focus podcast to talk about how the film came to be, its enduring legacy  - and the sequel that never happened.

This week we're discussing a film that *should* be a fucking classic. There should be action figures. Midnight screenings. An Arrow Films box set. But this film barely exists anymore. It's not just "TAKEN with wolves." It's THE GREY. And it rules.Credits:Eye of the Duck is created, hosted, and produced, by Dom Nero and Adam Volerich. This episode was edited by AJ Filari. Our intro song for Winter Hell is a mish mosh of soundtracks and dialogue clips that are pulled from horror films that take place in the frozen cold. Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind's “Main Title” track for The Shining and Ennio Morricone's composition for The Thing are the central themes you hear. The outro music is the ominous end credits song from The Shining called “Midnight and the Stars are You” by Ray Noble and His Orchestra with vocals by Al Bowlly. This week, Sonny talks to James White, the Head of Restoration at Arrow Films. On this episode, we dive into the tricky nature of rescuing older films and getting them ready for appreciation on Blu-ray and UHD 4K. What is the actual mechanical process of restoring a film like? Beyond getting elements like the original negatives, how does James work with directors and cinematographers to make sure the color timing is right? What's the deal with film grain? All that and more on this week's episode! By happy coincidence, Arrow happens to be having a sale right now. (I didn't plan this, I swear!) But if you're an American and own an out-of-region player, make sure to check out Arrow's site for some great deals; Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, pictured above, is just £8, as is Time Bandits, about which James had a very funny story toward the end of this week's pod. (Eight pounds is roughly eleven dollars at the moment, so it's a good deal.) If you don't have an out-of-region player, check out Diabolik DVD which has a bunch of their U.S. releases on sale now. Diabolik's Jesse Nelson was a guest on this here podcast, and his store is really wonderful; if you pick anything up (like the Blu-ray of Why Don't You Just Die, best described as Tarantino by way of Russia), tell him I sent you.

Join George and the guys as we welcome a special guest, film historian Troy Howarth. Troy literally wrote the book on giallo (three of them, actually) (and another on Argento) (and another on Bava... and you get the picture) and provided the audio commentary for The Bird with the Crystal Plumage for Arrow Films recent Blu-Ray release. In short, George just promoted to next-level film nerdity.   We manage to not spoil the movie for most of the episode, and we clearly delineate when we hit spoiler territory, so never fear if you haven't seen Bird just yet. But hopefully we make the case to check it out!   What was planned as a standard episode with a guest turns into a "how to watch European cult cinema and live to tell the tale" (which, it turns out, was just the thing George and Travis were needing). After Troy departs we soldier on in our usual fashion, fighting all comers to get George to stop overthinking everything and just enjoy himself for a few hours...   Will George ever find a crystal-plumed bird that satisfies his remarkably stringent plumage standards? Can Travis successfully pinpoint his specific Meyers-Briggs "subtitles and dubs" personality type? Does Dan survive the guest portion without completely fan-boying out? Tune in to find out!   And after the episode, check out the Extra Credit Discussion group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/remedialfilmpod   Theme song recorded by The Hungry Sevens, featuring Shawnee Houlihan.

To coincide with the Blu Ray (Arrow Films) release of Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang's wonderful elegy to the cinema Goodbye Dragon Inn, we are reposting one of our earliest episodes. Associated with what has come to be known a slow cinema, Tsai's subtly observed visual storytelling utilising long shots, intricate framing and editing but with minimalist dialogue, demands an a deep level of  attention in the viewer. The empty, dilapidated movie palace at the centre of the story a metaphor for wider rejection of the auditorium experience. Recorded live at Falmouth University, the episode now feels like a bittersweet look back at a time when the status of cinema-going was undoubtedly a topic of lament, but not to the extent that it is now.  The episode also features an interview with academic Sarah Atkinson about her book, Beyond The Screen: Emerging Cinema and Engaging Audience - which presents an expanded conceptualization of cinema which encompasses the myriad ways film can be experienced in a digitally networked society where the auditorium is now just one location amongst many in which audiences can encounter and engage with films. Listening back to the audio was also a reminder to us as to how far the podcast has come in the 5 years since we started. There is definitely a rough and ready feel about the audio, but we hope you 'appreciate' that. Goodbye Dragon Inn is released on Blu Ray with Arrow Films on 23rd of November. IRL festivals might be off this summer, but there's still We Are One - a ten-day YouTube banquet of the best of the recent festival circuit. Before we get to that, Rob's got a review of After Midnight, a new streaming release from Arrow Films. We don't want to jinx this, but this might be the rare hotly-tipped new indie horror film that Rob likes! Our We Are One kicks off with Graham looking at some of the short films on offer, before taking on one of the breakouts of the festival: Prateek Vats's Indian satire Eeb Allay Ooo! In any other week, a comedy-drama about monkey-scaring might be the oddest film on offer. This week, however, we must reckon with Rob's attempt to review the unreviewable: Nabwana I.G.G.'s karaoke Ugandan family kung-fu opus Crazy World. It sure is. Heather Buckley is a grand maester of film and horror. The first feature she produced, Jenn Wexler’s The Ranger, for Glass Eye Pix and Hood River Entertainment, premiered at SXSW and played numerous festivals on an international run before it was released in NYC and LA. Heather’s work as a film analyst and journalist spans over a decade, with bylines in Vulture, Dread Central, and Fangoria. Her background in SFX work includes: Circus of the Dead, Dead Still, and We Are Still Here. She is currently a Blu-Ray special features producer, creating documentaries for Kino Lorber, Lionsgate/Vestron, Arrow Films and Shout Factory releases, including John Carpenter's The Thing, Barton Fink, The Long Riders, Saw 10th Anniversary Reissue, and Army of Darkness. The movie that Heather chose this week is a real doozy - Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Heather talks about how she believes it's one of the most important films ever made. She discusses how this film forces the audience to root for violence. She elaborates on the fact that this movie has no moral center, and how it's the audience's job to gauge morality. And she and April also discuss the controversy this film sparked upon release and why the movie was initially difficult to get a hold of. You can see Heather's work all over the place. Plus, you can watch The Ranger on Shudder. And if you haven't seen Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer yet, be careful. With April Wolfe and Heather Buckley. The episode is finished off with a round of Whole Hog featuring a Dracula, a sheriff and a guy who fights giant sharks for a living.   ***************************************************** “Party Crowd 2” by Kolezan is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Bong Hit” by OnionEye is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Breath in and out Cigarette” by OnionEye is licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0 “Metal Loop” by thunderstorm10 is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Scream 1” by TheSubber13 is licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0 ****************************************************** Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and like us on facebook, Instagram, and on Twitter. Episode 46 of One Week Only! We have some very weird films for you this week! Our key film is "We Are The Flesh," a deranged but strikingly beautiful horror film about two teenagers lost in ruined city, who come across a dangerous man who offers to help them survive. Directed by Emiliano Rocha Minter and starring Noé Hernández, this is a bold, perverse but visually arresting piece of horror filmmaking. It has already played in Los Angeles, but opens in New York this week, from Arrow Films. Another deeply strange film this week is the French comedy "Staying Vertical" by Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake) about a wandering filmmaker who accidentally becomes a father. We also review the twisty neo-noir thriller "Detour" by Christopher Smith, about two possible realities for a young man on a quest for revenge. We're attending the Sundance & Slamdance Film Festivals this weekend, so we'll have coverage of the films we see in our next Episode! Hosted by Carlos Aguilar & Conor Holt. Music by Kevin MacLeod at www.incompetech.com
