In this episode of Angling Wisdom, Patrick Edwards invites expert angler and guide Brian "Bro" Brosdahl from "The Bro Roadshow” to explore the fascinating world of yellow perch fishing. Although Patrick admits he isn't an expert on perch, he has had plenty of unintentional catches while targeting other species like walleyes. Brian, a passionate and seasoned angler, shares valuable insights on yellow perch behavior, fishing techniques, and the importance of conservation.Tune in as Patrick and Bro discuss:Yellow Perch Overview- Native to North America, yellow perch are prolific breeders but can be overharvested. Larger “jumbos” are prized, but most perch are 6-10 inches long.- They are opportunistic feeders, eating minnows, crayfish, and snails, and are great for beginners due to their eagerness to bite.Fishing Techniques- Perch are found at varying depths depending on food availability. Target big perch with patience, especially in heavily pressured areas.- During the spawning season, fish for males near spawning areas using small jigs and waxworms. In summer, use underspins with minnows and nightcrawlers (Learn how to catch your own nightcrawlers here: Angling Wisdom: Episode 4).Year-Round Perch Fishing Strategy- Winter: Early ice fishing targets areas near green weeds, while mid-winter fishing focuses on deep basins with heavy lures.- Summer & Fall: Perch feed on crayfish and bug hatches, with aggressive jigging techniques working best in cooler water.Conservation and Ethical Fishing- Selectively harvest and release large females during spawning to ensure future populations. - - Use durable gear like tungsten spoons and specialized hooks to minimize harm during release.- Overharvesting is a concern, and anglers should limit their catch to preserve perch populations.Fishing Gear and Techniques- Brian shares tips on ice fishing equipment, including forward-facing sonar and 24-inch track snowmobiles for mobility. GPS tracking is essential for navigating unpredictable ice conditions.Fishing is about more than just catching fish—it's about understanding fish behavior, using the right gear, and maintaining an ethical approach to conservation. Whether you're a novice or an experienced angler, these insights will help you enjoy the sport and preserve it for future generations. Thanks for tuning in! In Episode 11 of Angling Wisdom, Patrick dives into the topic of fishing knots. A good knot can be the difference between landing a big catch or losing it, along with an expensive lure. Patrick covers his top three fishing knots, explaining their strengths, uses, and the scenarios where each one excels. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned angler, this episode is packed with practical advice to improve your knot-tying skills. In This Episode You'll Learn About: The Palomar Knot: Known for its incredible strength and simplicity, the Palomar Knot is a must-know for any angler. It's ideal for big game fishing but requires a bit more line and can be tricky to tie in low-light conditions. The Improved Clinch Knot: A versatile and reliable knot, the Improved Clinch Knot works well with various line types and is Patrick's go-to knot for most fishing situations. It's easy to tie, quick to learn, and suitable for a wide range of lures. The Snell Knot: Particularly useful for bait fishing, the Snell Knot ensures that your bait stays aligned with your hook. It's also a crucial knot for anglers who make their own crawler harnesses. Check out the videos included in the youtube version of this episode for visual demonstrations of each knot. Choosing the right knot depends on your fishing situation, the type of line you're using, and the bait or lure you're working with. Master these three knots, and you'll be well-prepared for most fishing scenarios. Be sure to do your research and practice knot-tying to avoid the dreaded experience of losing a catch or lure due to a poorly tied knot. On this episode of Wild & Uncut, we sit down with the President & Founder of National Rifle League Hunter Series, Travis Ishida. Being a first generation hunter, it is easy to hear the passion he has for the sport. Being a proficient marksman and understanding what it takes to be successful in his pursuit to provide meat for his family, Travis started NRL Hunter in hopes of other hunters/shooters wanting to take their skills to the next level. Whether you're a first time competitor or it's your hundredth match, the NRL Hunter uses the excitement and stress of competition to create realistic shooting scenarios that will test the marksman and their knowledge of their equipment. The goal of "education through competition" is to help make you the most effective version of yourself; the NRL will surely do just that! NRL's mission statement: Hunting isn't merely a hobby or pastime, it is our way of life. For us, it is about community, education, and a strong foundation of ethical harvesting. It is the desire to be the most proficient hunter possible, it is this passion that has driven us to develop the NRL HUNTER series of matches. Travis is a great person and always a joy to talk with...we even took a little time to talk about the most delicious part of the hunt...the wonderful meat we harvest and bring home to enjoy all year long. Lots of great discussion, you'll enjoy it! ********************************************************************* PRESENTED BY: Ruger: http://ruger.com/ Nightforce Optics: http://nightforceoptics.com/ Dead Down Wind, Trophy Taker Rests, Ramcat Broadheads, Rack One & Tink's: https://www.arcushunting.com/ Safari Club International: https://safariclub.org/ Bear Archery: https://beararchery.com/ Trophy Ridge: https://trophyridge.com/category/sights onX maps: https://www.onxmaps.com/ Kifaru International: http://kifaru.net/ Kryptek: https://kryptek.com/ Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls: https://buglingbull.com/ Tetra Hearing: https://tetrahearing.com/ Wilderness Athlete: https://wildernessathlete.com/ CONTACT KRISTY Website: http://www.pursuethewild.com Pursue The Wild Store: https://pursue-the-wild.myshopify.com/ Social Media Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KristyTitus/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kristytitus/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/KristyTitus Subscribe to Pursue The Wild with Kristy Titus https://www.youtube.com/user/PursuetheWild

Wolf Management in Colorado with Aron Snyder Show Notes:   In about a year, Howl for Wildlife grew to over 20,000 members and we're helping hunters have a voice. Almost every action we've been involved in has either progressed forward or was a win for hunting. It's a powerful tool to connect hunters with decision-makers and it's really had a positive impact. Aron Snyder is the president of Kifaru International, a company that makes some of the best hiking and hunting gear available. Here, we talk about something that's near and dear to Aron's heart: the wolf issue in Colorado.    Back in 2020, proposition 114 was on the ballot for Colorado to reintroduce wolves. 50.9% of the votes were in favor of the decision, meaning we lost by just a little. Hunters don't often want to get involved in things that don't directly impact them, but if everyone took a stand, we'd get a lot more done in our favor. There are over 16 million hunters in the US and in the age of social media and the internet, we're more in the know than ever. Colorado alone has over a million hunters and if they all stood up against the proposition, we'd likely be in a much different situation than we are today.   Proposition 114 states that 250 wolves will be transplanted by the end of 2023. The Colorado parks and wildlife commission has to create and carry out plans to reintroduce and manage the wolves. We need the commission to know which parts of the plan we support and get it in place before they potentially get non-hunters on the board. Aron and I talk about the details of the plan and how hunters can get involved. The easiest thing to do is head to the Howl for Wildlife website. Click on the Action Center and enter your name and email in the wolf management plan action and hit send. We also talk about other hot topics in the hunting world, which you can also check out on HowlforWildlife.org. What's Inside: Issues with wolf management in Colorado Why it's important for hunters to get involved Hot hunting topics to review and take action on What hunters can do to help   Mentioned in this episode Phoenix Shooting Bags save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ GoHunt: https://www.gohunt.com/   Short Description: Aron Snyder is the president at Kifaru International and we're discussing the wolf management issue in Colorado. Over the Counter Elk Hunting Stories with Mike Herne   Show Notes: Mike Herne is here for a little campfire hunting story session. Mike's an avid hunter and bow hunting is his passion, although he recently picked up a rifle and enjoyed it. The army is Mike's day job where he works in a professional development academy. In his spare time, he writes hunting and outdoor-related content for Black Rifle Coffee through their publication, Free Range American. Mike shares some of his favorite hunts and elk is hands down his favorite animal to chase with a bow. He grew up on the east coast sitting in tree stands looking for deer and the first time he heard an elk bugle and saw an elk, he was hooked.   Most of Mike's elk hunting experience has been in Colorado. He went on a cool trip last year with Aron Snyder and South Cox from Kifaru International where he called elk for Aron on a pretty awesome tag. Mike loves elk hunting because of the instant gratification you can get with bugling versus sitting and waiting for deer to show up. His first over-the-counter-archery elk hunt was when he was stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado. After a deployment, Mike took a couple weeks off to hunt. It was a tough hunt, and he shares some lessons he had to learn the hard way.   The following season, Mike went back out and saw some quick success. The learning curve he experienced during his first hunt helped give him a leg up. He learned a ton about bugling, including when and when not to do it. Mike shares stories about a filmed trip he took with Free Range American that showed the reality of the over-the-counter hunting experience. We also talked about the similarities between calling elk and turkeys, hunting white tail deer, and lessons learned about creating illusions with noise and calls. Mike's a great example of someone who takes what he learned from previous hunts and elevates his game the next season. What's Inside: Mike's first elk hunt and the lessons he learned. How Mike used his experience to find success in hunting. Elk calling and bugling tips.   Mentioned in this episode Phoenix Shooting Bags save 20% with code johnstallone Howl for Wildlife: https://www.howlforwildlife.org/ GoHunt: https://www.gohunt.com/   Short Description: Mike Herne is an avid bow hunter with some great stories, including a great one from his first time in Colorado. Aron Snyder is the President of Kifaru International, a household name and brand in the world of backcountry hunting. When I first heard of Aron, I was commuting to and from work an hour each way and spent a lot of that time learning as much as I could from his experiences via podcasting because at the time, I was beginning to get nice and cozy with the idea of backpack hunting. I needed as much information as possible and that's what I got along with a lot of entertainment.Aron has spent a lot of time in the field learning things that you can only learn IN THE FIELD. He's succeeded, failed, and succeeded again and, as you'll hear in this episode, it's the getting the reps in that count. Nothing is a substitute for miles and time in the backcountry because that's what ACTUALLY teaches you what you need to learn. Once that experience is gained, you'll look back and see that those spreadsheets you made detailing every single nut and bolt you carried with you are actually not so useful after all. You'll no longer care about how much an item weighs because you'll already know that information and you'll know HOW that item fits into your kit and WHY it's there in the first place.Backpacking will become second nature at some point and that's when the doors begin to open for you. This episode with Aron Snyder is littered with incredible insight from a guy who designs packs for a living, runs a backcountry hunting company, and has put a countless amount of hours in the field doing the hard work. When he speaks, listen closely and take he says and apply it to your own backcountry efforts. From getting to know where Aron came from and how he came to work for Kifaru to what ACTUALLY matters out there, it's all in this episode and you'll no doubt come away with some great nuggets of wisdom.By Land,Emory R. On Episode 4 of the Her Inspired Journey Podcast I sit down and chat with Dayna Monroe about just that - finding her way, becoming a hunter, and learning to love herself through it all.   "One of the most important things I've learned as a woman is to embrace what you are, and love who you are. The world will tell you that you need to change something to be loved or accepted, but that's not the case. Women are phenomenal, strong human beings that can conquer anything! Don't apologize for what you enjoy in life either. We are all queens and we need to lift each other up instead of tearing down one another. Love!"   Dayna grew up in a family that hunted but outside of her love for being outside she never really got the "hunting bug", until much later in life.   As young men and women growing up we all have the opportunity to be exposed to different aspects of life - some of those things we learn to love, and others, well, just fall off the radar.   Years later, after watching her family and friends hunt and not sharing the same passion for it Dayna has circled back around and now lives and breathes for archery hunting.   On this episode we share success and failures along the way, and get to hear more of her journey for providing organic wild game to live a healthier and happier life.   Having recently made the biggest move of her life, from her home town of Monroe, Utah to Colorado she is beginning a new journey and finding her way.   Dayna works at KIFARU International as an intricate part of the team, and is always doing her best to help men and women prepare for their next adventure.   You can also find Dayna in the heat of competition enjoying Alpha Bowhunting competitions, or pushing herself up "fire road" for a good sweat before she begins her day.   I loved Daynas response when I asked her, "what do you wish you could go back and tell your younger self?" She said, "If I could give my younger self some advice it would be to do more hard things. I loved challenging myself physically, but I always struggled with getting out of my shell. I was so shy! Looking back it really limited me on the experiences I could have had."   No matter what part of the journey you are on right now it is time to take your next challenge head on and fall in love with your life.   You can find Dayna on Instagram: @dayna_monroe or @kifar_intl   & Facebook: Dayna Monroe   you can see more of KIFARU International here.   Time to let those "big ideas" come to life! This week on Gritty Bowmen we meet again with Aron Snyder of Kifaru International to talk about why your pack is so freakin’ heavy.  At the end of this podcast you will know what Aron does to lighten his backpack.  As Aron explains in this podcast, most guys pack for Siberia but go to Africa.  Aron will also teach you how to modify your gear to make it lighter without sacrificing function. But you’ve got to be carful doing this. As Aron said, “Brian, “When you start hacking parts off your pack and you think you ‘might’ be wrong--you’re probably wrong. One of my army instructors told me that. But if that thing has been in your pack or part of your pack for 3 years and you’ve never used it... hack that thing off like Hannibal Lecter!” This podcast is chalk full of what I call Aron Snyderisms.  Like, “ounces make pounds and pounds make pain.” And “usually it’s the bad-ass person who goes too ultralight and turns out to be the dumb-ass person.” The podcast has some glitchy spots but it’s not too bad and the content is well-worth the time. In the last 30 minutes of theis podcast Aron and I go off on a tangent and talk about sponsorships in the hunting and outdoor industry--we talk about what we don’t like about sponsorships and why.  And Aron tells me what his favorite clothing choices are right now, right down to the brand name.  Which, will probably  make some people in the hunting industry mad at him.  Sorry Aron. Featured in this Podcast:How to shed useless, dead weight-- pack lighter without sacrificing your comfort.5 WAYS TO LIGHTEN YOUR PACK:Assess the situation. Don’t pack for Siberia when you’re going to Africa.Cutting and modifying your gear--shed useless weight.Splitting gear with your hunting buddies.Buy the lightest weight gear that you can afford that fits your style of hunting.Lose the weight off your ass. When you’re pushing the envelope to save weight you can’t have our cake and eat it too. “My wife wants a gun that shoots down trees, doesn’t make noise and doesn’t kick -- and they just don’t have that...” “It’s kind of like building a building... you can have quality, quantity, and cost-efficiency and you can have any two of those you want but you can’t have all 3.  It’s the same with paying the piper for lightweight.” “First Lite makes a jacket we call the “unpronounceable”... the oounncompadre.” Question: “What is a woobie and when do you use it?”Answer: “Oh I know. And what’s horrible is Kifaru also makes a Doobie, which is probably because Patrick was a hippie.”

Hello, and welcome to the Gritty Bowmen podcast. I’m Brian Call. This is episode 1 of the Gritty Bowmen Podcast. This is our first podcast—so go easy on us. Aron is the R&D (research and development) guy at Kifaru International and a well-known backcountry hunting enthusiast. On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, Aron Snyder decides to do a Kifaru backpack giveaway to Gritty Bowmen podcast listeners. I’m not so big into advertising or offering promotional stuff or into sales. But I’ve been receiving emails and PMs daily from people who cannot find our podcast on iTunes under the hunting or outdoors category searches. Our listeners have found us by word of mouth or on Youtube, FB or Instagram. In fact, when you go to iTunes and do a category search for outdoor podcasts, the Gritty Bowmen podcast does not show up in the search. Apparently, only featured podcasts by Apple are shown. According to apple, they couldn’t show all the outdoor podcasts or there would be thousands. So the chances of someone finding the Gritty Bowmen podcast by browsing in iTunes for a hunting podcast is very slim until Apple recognizes our podcast and features our content. And apparently, our Gritty Bowmen cover art in iTunes is too gory for apple so we’re thinking about changing that.  I want the Gritty Bowmen brand to grow organically, to be made up of genuine fans with an interest in what we’re doing. I want every review on iTunes to be obtained because someone is genuinely into the show—and NOT because we’re giving away a pack or doing some other promotional offer. So until now, we have avoided promotional offers. But then I got to thinking, do I leave reviews for the podcasts I listen to, and really like? The truth is, before I started my own podcast I rarely left reviews for the podcasts I listened to and thoroughly enjoyed. So I realized, a little motivation can go a long way. I’m sure you folks are just like me—you’re busy, you have jobs, family and life tugging at you. And I remember the first time I tried to leave a review on iTunes—after 30 minutes of effort and still no review I gave up. It wasn’t until I was sufficiently motivated to leave a review that I stuck with it until I figured out how to do it. So… hence the backpack giveaway. What kind of hunter wouldn’t want a chance at a free backpack anyway! I hope the possibility of winning a free backpack can justify the time it will take for you to leave us review.  In this podcast you will learn why Aron Snyder is NOT in charge of this  backpack giveaway. His bleeding heart is just not as unbiased as mine. A-Aron just needs to leave this give away to the professionals at the Gritty Bowmen. Aron just needs to donate the pack—we’ll take it from here.  Aron seems to think that our listeners in Djibouti should be left out of the giveaway. But we, at the Gritty Bowmen will not discriminate. Which brings up another point, the giveaway is not restricted to Apple users. You android and apple-haters can participate in the giveaway by leaving us a review on Stitcher. And while you’re leaving us a review on Stitcher or iTunes—be sure to subscribe to the podcast if you haven’t already. This way, you can have all of the episodes automatically download to your mobile device so you can enjoy them anytime, anywhere. And for people like Tom Ryle or my college roommate Chad Nelson, who are struggling with leaving us a review on iTunes or Stitcher, Mark Brownlee and I will be creating a little “Gritty Tip instructional video on “how to leave a review and how to subscribe to a podcast.” So look for that Gritty Tip in the next week or so. The deadline to participate in the giveaway is September 10th so don’t worry, you have some time to wait for our little instructional video to do your review.  Lastly, the giveaway extends to everyone who has EVER left us a review.  And without further ado, here is today’s podcast.  Alright folks,  As you can see, Aron is not qualified to manage this backpack giveaway. Although he is very qualified to donate the pack to the give away. in all seriousness, I want thank Kifaru International for supporting our show and what we’re doing. And I want to personally thank Aron Snyder for being a regular on the show and graciously sharing his expertise. And I want to thank all of you out there listening and supporting the show—your feedback is awesome. Stay tuned for our instructional video on how to leave a review and how to subscribe to a podcast. I wish you all great success in your lives and in your hunts this year. Stay Gritty! A-A-Ron Substitute Teacher Video
