5 Financial Resources for Teens - Money Tip Tuesday

Building sound money habits at a young age can set you up for financial success through the rest of your life. Fortunately, there are many resources available to help young people learn and build financial skills that are also fun and rewarding.  Links:  Explore Visa's Practical Money Skills website Financial guide book: How to Money: Your Ultimate Guide to the Basics of Finance Learn about investing with The Stock Market Game Explore financial resources for every age at MyMoney.gov Learn more about Triangle's Teen Club account with debit card! Check out TCU University for more financial education tips and resources!  Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!  Learn more about Triangle Credit Union  Transcript:  Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast.   Financial literacy is important for people of any age. Without a fundamental understanding of money, it's difficult to build effective habits that will last throughout the many different stages of life.  The earlier in life people learn about and practice important money skills, the better.   Teens are right at the point where money habits start to become relevant and important. They're likely to get their first job, buy their first car and enjoy their growing independence. Their access to money provides them with the ability to spend more on what they want and need in life. But even though they may have money coming in, they may not know where to look for help when managing their finances.   According to a 2021 Greenlight survey, 74% of teens surveyed said they didn't feel confident in their personal financial knowledge and 73% wanted more financial education.   The challenge for most people at any age is to find the right resources that provide effective education and training.   If you're a teen or maybe a parent of a teen looking for some ways to encourage and build financial skills, here are 5 resources that can help your teen learn about money.  The first one is the website called Practical Money Skills hosted by VISA. It's designed to teach people of all ages about financial education and covers topics such as credit, banking, debt, identity theft, budgeting and more. It also offers a collection of activities, tools and videos for teens to explore as well as a variety of money games designed for different age ranges.   The second is to use a financial guide. If your teen enjoys reading, you can check out the book How to Money: Your Ultimate Guide to the Basics of Finance. This book was listed on Investopedia as the best overall money book for teens. It's a useful beginner's guide to most money topics that teens can start to explore like starting your first budget, navigating student loans and scoring your first job. It's also available as an audiobook, so if your teen isn't much of a physical reader, they can still explore the material from their phone or computer.   For investment education, the third resource is to try The Stock Market Game. If your teen is interested in the stock market, or you want them to learn more about the stock market, to gain experience or understand it a bit more, there's a fun tool to explore the ins and outs of the market without using real money.  This is an online trading simulator, set up as a game, that builds familiarity with how the stock market works to help you build confidence in investing. It's designed to be fun and once you set up an account, it provides fake money that you'll use to try your trading strategies.  If your teen likes practical, hands-on tools like checklists, calculators and other resources, then check out this fourth resource, MyMoney.gov. It's managed by the Financial Literacy and Education Commission and provides an abundance of Youth Resources specifically designed for young people ranging from young children to highschoolers. If your child or teen likes to explore games, there a many on this site to explore. It also links to the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) website for access to even more resources for children and parents targeted by different age ranges. The fifth resource for teens is to use a teen checking account and debit card. What good is all the money management knowledge and financial literacy tools if there's no way to put it all into practice? If your teen is starting to make some money, it's time to get them experienced with a debit card and checking account. This simple tool opens the door to all kinds of financial possibilities so they can practice all the lessons they've been learning like depositing money, tracking spending, making payments, and managing a budget. Teens also gain access to mobile banking apps and other online banking tools that they can use to set goals, budget and track spending. Check out Triangle's Teen club account to learn more about the helpful financial benefits teens get with membership, including their own debit card.   If there are any other tips or topics you'd like us to cover, let us know at tcupodcast@trianglecu.org, and don't forget to like and follow our Making Money Personal FB page and look for our sponsor, Triangle Credit Union, on Instagram and LinkedIn to share your thoughts.    Thanks for listening to today's Money Tip Tuesday. Today, we’re going to talk about how to buy and sell stocks, but never lose a dime of your own money! That’s right. One of my former teachers is going to tell us how. That and more coming up. The Cash Kid Podcast is underway! (music) Intro tease: So you’ve got some cash. Maybe from an allowance, or that money your grandma gave you for your 7th birthday (Here you go sweetie.) Thanks grandma. Whatever it is, what are you going to do with it? Spend it, hide it away… or maybe invest it? Let’s start learning how to make that money grow. Time to learn how to be a cash kid. (cash register) Kids today love to play online games. (Mario music sound effect). But in this episode, we’re going to talk about how you can use $100,000 to buy and trade stocks with no regrets. That’s right! It’s known as the stock market game. It’s how I first learned about my love of the stock market… and I never lost a penny of my own money. So let me introduce our guest and my former teacher Mrs. Amy Abbott to the show, to explain how it works. Mrs. Abbott was one of my teachers and during the school year we did something called The Stock Market Game. We’ll provide links to the game and more on our website at cashkidpodcast.com. I’m excited to have her join us for this episode to talk about the stock market game. And, I guess you have her to thank for what led to this podcast. Cash Kid - Mrs. Abbott, thank you for joining us today. First off, tell us a little bit about yourself. Mrs. Abbott - Hey Cash Kid, thank you so much for having me on today. Like you said, I am a teacher. I teach 4th and 5th grade gifted students here in Birmingham, AL. I’m a wife and a mom. I have two girls who are ten and five. Cash Kid - When did you learn about the stock market game and why did you feel it would be a good idea for students? Mrs. Abbott - So, I actually learned about the stock market game when I was in fifth grade because I played the stock market game as a student. But back then it was not digital like it is today. So, I had to bring in my dad's Wall Street Journals , the actual physical newspaper, and I'd bring a big stack of them in for the week and we would spread them out around our classroom. And then we had to look through all of those ticker symbols. We couldn't just search for the one we wanted. We had to search through and find our company and see how it had done for the week. So we kind of just check that once a week. It wasn't like a daily thing and I loved it. I still remember that as an adult, and I thought it would be a great fit for my students because it's such a real world simulation. It teaches real life problem solving skills and just so many valuable life lessons for the future. Cash Kid - That's great. So how long have you been presenting this as an option for students? Mrs Abbott - So I think that I first started presenting this as an option probably the first year that I started teaching Gifted, which was in 2006. That was about 17 years ago. It's been around for a long time. Cash Kid - How does the stock market game work? Mrs. Abbott - Okay, so the stock market game is a ten week online trading experience. Students begin with a fictitious hundred thousand dollars that they can use to purchase stock bonds and mutual funds. They can make any number of trades with their funds. And then at the end of the ten weeks, the program sees whose portfolio is the most valuable and the most valuable portfolio at the end of ten weeks wins for their division. It's open for grades four through 12. Cash Kid - What do you feel your students learn from participating in the stock market? Mrs. Abbott - All right Cash Kid I could go on for a long time about this because I think the students learn so much. You know, they're learning a lot of economic and financial principles. They're learning to work with real world variables. So like actual changing prices, they're working with a changing market. They're learning how current events can impact the economy. They're also learning about how companies get started and how a company can go public and grow. They are learning, you know, teamwork, computer skills, critical thinking, problem solving. And another thing that I think is great is they're learning some valuable lessons about how to handle adversity and how to adjust and adapt when things do not go as planned. Because Cash Kid did your stocks always do as well as you had hoped? Cash Kid - Uhhh, No. Mrs. Abbott - What did you learn from playing the stock market game? Cash Kid - Well, I learned that the stock market like you doesn't have a 100% chance you’ll gain money every single day. It's up and down. There's always risk. And like it's a great way to actually tune your financial skills. Sure it helps you learn how to budget and stuff like that, but it's a great experience to learn how to invest and know what companies wouldn't be as risky and other stuff like that. Mrs. Abbott - Yeah, I forgot to mention we're talking about how the game works, that even though the money is obviously not real, we are using real time pricing. So you're looking at the actual prices of companies making trades based on real time pricing. So that's an important thing. I forgot to mention. Cash Kid - Do you know how schools get access to use it or how individuals can play the stock market game? Mrs. Abbott - Yes. Okay. So all you have to do is go to stock market game.org. That's all one word stock market game.org. And then find your state. So, for example, we play the Alabama stock market game, but it's all run through the same website. It is open to anyone in grades four through 12. It is $15 per team and I think you can have anywhere from 1 to 5 people on your team. They also offer scholarships. So if you can't pay the $15, they're very willing to help you with that. And schools get a discount. So the more teams you have, the cheaper it is. And you can play as an individual as you want to. I actually tested that out last night. I tried to sign up my daughter and it looks like anybody can sign up. You just need an adult to help you register. And it looks like now they're offering three sessions. So there's actually a summer session from July to August, and then they'll take a break and then do a ten week session, usually kind of like around mid-September through December, and then again kind of in the spring, maybe February to April or May, somewhere in there. Cash Kid - Yes. Okay. So what have you learned from watching your students play this game? Mrs. Abbott - So I love watching my students learn new things. I love seeing them find their passions like the Cash Kid. And I have also learned that kids make great investors. Cash Kid - Do you feel more financial advice would be beneficial to students? Mrs. Abbott - I do. What do you think of Cash Kid? Cash Kid - I think it would be amazing. I recently saw this Instagram post my mom showed me and it was 35 years ago if you invested $100,000 in the S&P, it will now be worth $1,000,000. But if you waited just ten years, it would only be $300,000. And so in just ten years, you can make a $700,000 difference. Mrs. Abbott - Yeah. Cash Kid - Yeah, It's really important to start as kids. Mrs. Abbott - I agree. And I think that kids just need to be learning personal finance skills in general. You know, when you grow up and graduate and go away to college, you might have a lot of booksmarts, but you might not know anything about how to manage your money or invest or grow your money. So I definitely think it's something that we should be teaching kids. Cash Kid - Yes. And what advice can you give other educators about the stock market game? Mrs. Abbott - My biggest advice to other educators is just give it a try. Don't be intimidated if you don't personally know how the stock market works and how to do all of that. Just get in there and try it. Set yourself an account. You can play the game alongside your students and learn with them. And I think that doing that is the best way to learn. So just get in there and try it. It's not real money. So if you lose all your money, it's okay. It's a good learning experience. Cash Kid don't you think that you learned the most just by getting in there and playing the game? Cash Kid - Definitely. I was able to see how real trading actually worked and how news affects the stock market. It was self-explanatory once you got on there and you could learn a lot from it. Mrs. Abbott - Yeah, I agree. So I do a little prep work because my students are so young. The older kids might already know some of the stuff we do, but we talk about how companies get started, how they go public. But the most learning really happens once the game gets started and they just get in there and do it. Cash Kid - Are there any other things you would like to share? Mrs. Abbott - I mean, I really just am a big fan of the stock market game. I think it's a great program. They have so many tools for educators, so when I log in as a teacher, they have a wealth of resources for me. So they've got lesson plans, they've got articles, they have tips. So there's all kinds of things for adults as well as just how to guide your students into playing the game. And I just think they can learn so much. Look at the Cash Kid. I mean, we can thank the stock market game for this awesome podcast. I'm so proud of you. Cash Kid - Thank you. I would say if you're thinking about it, do it. Just don't think like, o h, no, but what if it doesn't go so well? Well, it doesn't matter if it doesn't go so well. The money's fake and it's a great learning experience, So I would do it. No matter what. Mrs. Abbott - What about teachers that are thinking about trying it, but maybe they think it's too hard. Cash Kid - Oh, no. Just do it like I. I would love for other teachers to be able to learn because it would be very beneficial for other kids. Mrs. Abbott - Now, Cash Kid. I have a question for you. Cash Kid - Yes. Mrs. Abbott - Are you still investing with fictitious money or have you moved on to the real thing? Cash Kid - I've moved on to the real thing. Mrs. Abbott - That's what I thought. That's what I thought. Yeah. Well, thanks for having me on today. Cash Kid - Oh, thank-you Mrs. Abbott. ( a little pause a music starts up) Teachers. We truly have them to thank for so much. What would you do if you were given $100,000? Would you spend it all at once? Would you think about putting some of it in the bank? We'd like to teach you how to invest it, so you might grow it. Through The Stock Market Game, you will gain a fundamental understanding of investing and how you might get your money to work for you.On today's episode, we welcome St. Rose's Finance and Business Teacher, Mr. Anthony Attardo, and a few of his students involved in the Stock Market Game. Value traps, P/E ratios and growth potential are often challenging concepts to learn on your own.For students at St. Rose High School, they have the benefit of having a teacher with 30-plus years of experience on Wall Street to help them navigate the market and teach them the basics of what it means to be an investor. Those lessons are put into practice throughout the year, as students in Anthony Attardo's classes are pitting against other students throughout New Jersey in the Stock Market Game [SMG], a weekly student exercise created by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association to teach students the fundamentals of the market.Students in Mr. Attardo's accounting, economics and personal finance classes are broken into groups and assigned to manage a portfolio worth $100,000 as part of the game. One group of students, called Lululemon after the company of the same name, earned enough with their hypothetical investments, more than $110,000, to finish the week ending April 16 in sixth place among 750 such groups in the state, and fourth in the region.“From the SMG game, I learned about the importance of stocks and how important it is to have a diverse portfolio that provides well-rounded returns,” Tom Lafferty, a student in the group, said. “What's cool about it is that it provides you the money and you have to be the voice of reason and create an effective portfolio.”The group, made up of Tom Lafferty, Max MacEachern, Victoria Wilson, Chris Huisman and Michael Fluhr, used its hypothetical $100,000 to buy into bluechip companies like Disney, Exxon Mobil, General Motors and Microsoft.“There are a lot of factors that went into choosing stocks,” Michael said. “Our group researched the products, future plans, growth potential and P/E [price/earnings] ratios of many companies. It was important for us to evaluate how a specific company will continue to make money in the future. Another factor in our decision process was diversity. We wanted to make sure we chose successful companies from different sectors like entertainment, technology, and automotive.”When looking at which companies to invest in, the students would have to make the case to their teacher before finalizing the transaction.“When our team was picking and deciding which stock to include in our portfolio, we referred to our own practical anticipations of whether or not said companies stock would be profitable due to the company increasing in size, gaining popularity, and even if that company is recovering and making a comeback from the pandemic,” Chris said. The group also took a chance by putting money into Roku, a video media streaming service that went public in 2017.“When we added Roku to our portfolio we noticed that Roku TVs are very present in our lives,” Michael added. “This led us to research the high growth potential of Roku since they are such a relevant company during this pandemic.”To their teacher, Mr. Attardo, the game works into the overall message of the class and the main lesson he wants students to take away at the end of the year.“It's extremely important, not just for students to know to invest money, but what I try to teach the students here is how to manage their money,” Mr. Attardo said, adding that the Stock Market Game precedes his own time as a teacher at the school. “What I hope the students take from our curriculum is to have adequate...

The organization known as SIFMA goes back to 1912. It is a trade group which was first known as the Investment Bankers Association of America, then for many years, the Securities Industry Association, and now, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). SIFMA may be best known for a game played by middle school and high school students that represents the only economic education that some of them ever get before going out into the working world — The SIFMA Stock Market Game™. SIFMA’s CEO is Ken Bentsen. He’s a former member of Congress, who, in a relatively short eight years in the House, compiled a rather lengthy resume of bipartisan financial solutions. Meet Ken Bentsen.   Key Takeaways: [:19] Ray Hoffman describes the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) and gives background on its CEO, Ken Bentsen. [1:09] Ray introduces Ken Bentsen. [1:11] Ken comments on SIFMA’s mission statement, “SIFMA exists to advocate that America’s capital markets operate effectively and efficiently to the benefit of all market participants.” Ken describes the maturity of the U.S. capital market system and its correlation with the U.S. economy. [1:51] Ken notes that the capital market system is one of the most highly-regulated industries in the United States. While regulations ensure a level playing field, it is also important that markets are able to operate efficiently and effectively. If not, credit will not be allocated to the best ideas — the great innovations that create jobs. [2:33] The U.S. capital market has created an upward sloping chart in terms of the growth of the U.S. economy, going back 200 years. Even coming out of the 2008-2009 Great Recession, the U.S. came back more quickly than other jurisdictions around the world. Ken credits the resiliency of the U.S. capital market system. [3:34] Ken’s covers his career path, from his Master’s degree in public administration to working as a Congressional staffer, to following Congressional finance committees, to working in public finance in New York, to the House of Representatives working on financial services legislation, to consulting, to running a trade association, to SIFMA. [6:06] Ken served for four terms in Congress from Houston. He lists the committees on which he served, all tied to finance and budget. [6:18] Ken discusses the public’s general understanding of finance today vs. 20 years ago when he was in Congress. People feel pressure from the financial issues that impact them personally, whether that’s housing, cost of living, healthcare, or the effect of trade on jobs. People can get more for their dollar today, including new technologies. [8:01] It is most important to grow the economy as much as we can, to be able to solve fiscal issues. [8:33] Capital markets definitely play a role in growing the economy. Ken says, “We’re not the end — we’re the means to the end.” [8:42] The Stock Market Game™ is run by the SIFMA Foundation, which has been in place for 40 years. The Stock Market Game™ is the premier program that they do in thousands of schools across the U.S., touching hundreds of thousands of students every year. [9:27] The SIFMA Foundation built on the game over 40 years with programs like InvestWrite®, and Invest It Forward™. The results are amazing to see. They impact middle school and high school students, their teachers, and parents. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students in the programs do research reports. [10:05] This is important not only from the standpoint of financial literacy, but it also goes toward understanding the structure of the American economy, built in part on our financial system, which makes our economy stronger in contrast to other economies. [10:26] 12,000 schools in all 50 states participate in the programs every year, involving 600,000 students and 15,000 teachers. In 40 years, 18 million students have gone through the program. The SIFMA Foundation is working harder every year to increase participation. [10:47] SIFMA works with The SIFMA Foundation every year to do a competition to bring the top 10 schools to Washington D.C. to meet with their Representatives and Senators. This underscores to the students coming from all over how big and diverse this country is. [11:18] Students from all walks of life come in and talk about portfolios they’ve put together, the things that worked, and mistakes they made. They talk about looking at price reports every day, and research reports. It’s just amazing. [11:34] The top 10 winners of The Stock Market Game™ 2018 Capitol Hill Challenge came almost equally from areas represented by Democrats and areas represented by Republicans. Ken says it is really refreshing to see what The Stock Market Game™ does with these kids from all walks of life. [12:11] “To the benefit of all market participants” - Ray quotes the SIFMA mission statement. In the truest sense of the U.S. economy, we are all market participants. This is capitalism.   Mentioned in This Episode: SIFMA The Stock Market Game™ Ken Bentsen Drexel Burnham The SIFMA Foundation InvestWrite® Invest It Forward™ Capitol Hill Challenge Stephens.com This Is Capitalism

Ray Hoffman introduces Kathleen Lawson and Marsha Masters. It’s amazing how little most of us really know about the economic miracle that supports and nourishes the USA. After all, only 22 states require high school students to take even a single course in Economics. Only 17 states mandate a high school level course in Personal Finance. Bessie Moore of Mountain View Arkansas, whose life spanned the years from 1902 to 1995, would not have been pleased to know that that’s the state of the American economic education in the 21st Century. She believed the system built around free markets, allowing for free choice, free expression, underpinned by the rule of law, needs to be nurtured from generation to generation and thanks, in large part, to her efforts, Arkansas has K-12 Personal Finance and Economics education. Her legacy is well-guarded by an organization known as Economics Arkansas. Kathleen Lawson is Executive Director. Marsha Masters is Associate Director. Let’s meet them!   Key Takeaways: [1:38] Kathleen Lawson has calculated the number of children served by Economics Arkansas over the years as 4.5 million. [2:00] Since 1962, Economics Arkansas has worked with over 100,000 teachers. [2:20] Marsha Masters was a “third stringer” when it came to teaching economics, until she attended a 10-day workshop. [3:53] The Arkansas Council on Economic Education, which became Economics Arkansas, began in 1962 when Commissioner of Education, Dr. Arch Ford, felt students should understand the basic concepts of the free enterprise, market economy to better understand the dangers of other economic systems. Bessie Moore was the first leader. [4::23] Bessie Moore provided a great foundation for Economics Arkansas. [4:55] Bessie started teaching as a teenager. She had a love for economic education and literacy, in general. She made an impact, and her footprint is all over Arkansas. [6:16] Bessie saw the opportunity to create the multiplier effect by working with university centers of economic education and reaching out to media and clergy. She wanted everyone to have the opportunity of having an economics education. She produced lectures on the public television network that teachers could watch. [6:58] Arkansas has standards for teaching Economics in K-12. Economics Arkansas has the goal of teachers not seeing Economics as an additional course they need to teach. Economic education is a part of everything we teach. Marsha gives examples. To graduate high school, a student must take one semester of Economics. [8:33] Economics Arkansas has the hope that Economics is going to help students be successful. [9:11] Even a kindergartner can learn of scarcity, decision-making, and opportunity costs. [10:25] There are great opportunities for teacher training. Sometimes, adding an incentive is useful. The participation level of teachers has been encouraging. [11:45] Many teachers have no formal background in finance or the study of free enterprise. These training opportunities can help. [11:50] The teachers have been having their own ‘Aha!’ moments along with the students. There is a competition each year for teachers to submit their economic projects to be judged by economic education experts. Marsha discusses case studies. [13:18] A fourth-grade class “created” an amusement park, wrote a business plan, interviewed each other for jobs and even went to a bank to negotiate a $100 loan. [13:50] Economics Arkansas offers an investing simulation called the Stock Market Game. This inspires students to research publicly-traded companies. 13,000 students have played the Stock Market Game. Some have become financial advisors when they were of age; some learned to invest for themselves. They know how to manage a 401K. [15:20] Itty Bitty Economics is a program for kindergartners. There are songs, play, art, and children’s books that give young children an idea about economics and finance. [16:10] The Lemonade War book has been great for family discussions. There is also a Shark Tank program for students to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges in cities across Arkansas. A third book opportunity is coming into the program. [17:59] Marsha explains how Economics Arkansas addresses the extreme needs that exist around the state, and especially around the Delta region. 15 educational Co-ops exist around the state to reach teachers. [18:55] Kathleen brings up the 65 000 students that participate in a structured after-school program. Those settings can be an additional place to teach students. The Stock Market Game is one example. [19:40] Kathleen offers a vision of the next five years of Economics Arkansas, especially around their partnership with Stephens. [20:33] Bessie Moore would be pleased. But I don’t think she’d be satisfied. Not yet. This is Capitalism.   Mentioned in This Episode: Bessie B.
